singer/songwriter carole king. this is just part of our holiday week of great music here on "today." we begin with the weather and its impact on the busy travel rush. >> good morning, ann and matt. you're looking at the power of water, this is arkansas, i-30 was closed for a good period of time yesterday, even the backup road flooded out as people tried to make their way to get started on that holiday weekend. this same area is going to be impacted again today and it stretches from texas all the way up into new england, over the next 24 to 48 hours. here's where we have the risk of severe storms, houston, new orleans, montgomery, nashville, as far north as sin senate e, possibility of tornadoes, damaging winds. radar shows what's going on, this activity pushing through, we're talking anywhere from two to four inches of rain in that affected area. what does that mean? as far as airports for today

into tonight, seattle, portland, heavy rain, chicago, big hub, cincinnati as well, st. louis for fog and rain, looking at thunderstorms in atlanta, new york city, rain and low visibilities. if you're going to be on the roads tonight on into tomorrow, here is your other big problems, we're looking at rain up and down the eastern seaboard. we have winter storm warnings up in new england, heavy thunderstorms down to orlando and back to the west again, major rain which will probably cause some more flooding and again into the southeast and into the mid mississippi and tennessee river valleys more heavy rain and the possibilities of flooding. matt? >> al, thanks very much we'll get the rest of your forecast in a couple of minutes. let's turn now to politics and the blame game tied to the failure of the congressional super committee to work out a deficit reduction deal. kelly o'donnell is nbc's capitol hill correspondent. kelly, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, matt. what an embarrassing stumble for congress. the super committee with lawmakers with expertise punted on one of the nation's most

series crises but their failure doesn't mean it's over. big cuts are coming anyway. >> -- meaning lless at this poi. >> reporter: a rough, very partisan end for the super committee. no compromise on taxes and spending cuts, no deal to reduce the deficit by $1.2 trillion over a decade. >> i'm sorry for our country, because this was a moment of important leadership. it was a real test. >> there were fundamentally different positions, people tried to find a way to bridge the differences and come up with common ground. we just weren't able to get there. >> reporter: this failure comes with a price, triggering sweeping spending cuts, both domestic programs and defense in 2013. president obama had taken heat for not being more publicly involved, but when the super committee folded, the president spoke out late monday. >> one way or another, we will be trimming the deficit by a

total of at least $2.2 trillion over the next ten years. that's going to happen, one way or another. >> reporter: one of those ways the trimming gets done hits the defense department hard, automatic cuts of close to $600 billion. defense secretary panetta says that would gut the military. republican candidates for 2012 blame the president. >> we're going to put the military on the cutting block. i can't imagine when that circumstance makes any sense at all and with that as a possible outcome, you have a president who didn't get involved in the process. >> reporter: republicans on the hill are already vowing to block those defense cuts, but the president had a warning. >> i will veto any effort to get rid of those automatic spending cuts, domestic and defense spending. there will be no easy off ramps on this one. >> reporter: and there is turmoil over what happens next. >> the real news here are the

economy, the uncertainty, the stock markets, anyone who is serious about deficits. >> reporter: and republicans here are taking that veto warning in stride, already preparing ways to try to undo those defense cuts, and now that the president has weighed in yet again he will inevitably be more involved. some democratic sources tell us they didn't want him to be too visible during the sumer committee time but now that ball is right back in his court because so much of this fight will play out on the campaign trail in 2012 >> kelly o'donnell on capitol hill this morning, thanks. even before the super committee admitted defeat stocks were sliding. the dow closed down 248 points. jim cramer, host of cnbc's "mad money." >> good morning. >> the news coming out of the super committee had been bad for days and weeks so is that really what caused stocks to slide? >> no, it's all europe, matt. i think the super committee is a whipping boy because it seems so

obvious but we all expected nothing. europe, interest rates are going up, unemployment bad, the banks hurting, that's spilling over. >> i was listening to someone the other day asking the question, what is different about what's happening in europe right now as opposed to what happened in this country back in 2008. how would you answer that question? >> it's five times larger. they borrowed five times more money. the governments are very, very strapped for cash, no one wants to lend to them, the banks, no one wants to give them any money. our problems, as big as they were, were just fractional versus europe. >> our good friend tim russert used to have the chalkboard and write "florida, florida, florida." when it comes to europe and their crisis right now, is it germany, germany, germany? >> germany is in charge and don't want to rescue weak swimmers, afraid to be pulled down. greece,itily, spain could pull down germany. >> we know what happens in europe is going to closely impact what happens in this country. you've got people now saying

wait a second do i get out of the market, do i stand by and do nothing or jump into the market? >> do not jump in. you can stand by and do nothing. you have to expect this volatility to continue. we could be down 5%, 6%. people at home, i'm not telling you not to worry. i am telling you not to invest. >> although we somehow dismiss the super committee and what happened in terms of its effect on wall street, there is a psychological effect, though, isn't it? it's another example where investors look at washington and say why can't these people make decisions they have to make without partisan bickering to affect the country. >> it's political. in europe, it's the politicians, our country it's the politicians. things were getting better in our country, businesses were starting to spend. we get worried out of washington, not out of what the companies are doing. >> jim cramer, thanks very much. catch "mad money" weeknights on cnbc. now to the child abuse sex

scandal. a young man who was once very close to former coach jerry sandusky is speaking out. we'll hear from him in a moment. first nbc's peter alexander is on the penn state college campus with the latest in the developments in the case. good morning. >> reporter: there is another investigation under way in penn state university, this one specifically looking into how the university itself responded to the allegations of child sexual abuse by the football team's former defensive coordinator jerry sandusky. the allegations date back to the mid '90s, leading to the firing of the school's president and of course the head coach, joe pater paterno. at the helm of the investigation, a veteran lawman, louie freeh. the university is filled with serious new questions about its board of trustees. on monday the trustees tapped

freeh to head its investigation. the investigation will go back as far as 1975. >> if our investigation identifies any additional victims of sexual crimes against or exploitation of children, we will immediately report this to law enforcement authorities. >> reporter: board member kenneth frazier said freeh will be empowered to follow the investigation wherever it leads. >> no someone above scrutiny. >> reporter: nbc learned a second out of town charity sent kids to the second mile from 1988 to 20012001. the group, a better chance, places minority children in high performance school and sent around 30 kids to the second mile but none stayed at sandusky's home. as for louie freeh's investigation, his investigative team will include former

prosecutors, former u.s. attorneys and former investigators with experience covering cases that involve child sexual abuse and for this time, louie freeh made it clear there is no timetable for this investigation. >> peter alexander thank you for your reporting on this. now to our exclusive interview with the man who became very close with jerry sandusky as a child. he sat down with natalie morales. good morning to you. >> good morning to you, ann. for the first time we're hearing from a man actually mentored by the former penn state coach. frankie probst said he was not a victim of sexual abuse but decided to speak out to tell his side of the story including what did and did not happen as he spent much of his childhood in the company of sandusky. his name is frankie probst. he's now 24 years old, and a large part of his childhood was spent in the company of jerry sandusky. this scrapbook tells the story of the six years frankie probst was coached, mentored and befriended by a man 43 years his

senior. sandusky put the book together, documenting an intense relationship that appears to border on obsession. there are personal messages and inspirational passages, and scores of photographs. their unusual bond began around 1997 with sandusky's charity for at risk kids, second mile. did he zero in on you or equally paying attention to all of the boys at the time? >> i guess he took a liking to me and then the relationship kind of grew to like have a farely figure. >> reporter: over the next few years, that fatherly figure took frankie on one outing after another, from penn state athletic events to overnight out of town trips to see nfl games, and on many other weekends during the football season, frankie says he would stay at sandusky's home, almost as a member of the family. did you guys shower together?

>> after workouts, yes, but i'm used to getting a shower after athletic events anyway or working out. i looked at it, i'm getting a shower. >> reporter: was there any time he ever tried to touch you in a way that was inappropriate, touch your genitals? >> uh-uh. >> reporter: nothing? >> not that i recall. >> reporter: over time frankie began to feel ill at ease around sandusky. >> he did put his hand on your leg when he drove, but -- >> reporter: where on your leg. >> right above the knee. >> reporter: when he was driving, you should have two hands on the steering wheel and he would put his hands on your leg. >> um-hum. >> reporter: did that make you feel -- >> yeah, it started making me feel uncomfortable as i started to get older. i was like kind of like pushed away or whatever, you know, kind of pulled away. >> reporter: as frankie grew older he began avoiding sandusky, yet he says sandusky seemed to pursue him, even asking teachers to pull frankie out of class. >> it was just we kind of grew apart, he was getting clingy and wanting me to come over and

stuff. >> reporter: you said "no, i can't see you, i want to hang out with my friends." what was his reaction? >> he would not get mad but upset and stuff. >> reporter: frankie says their relationship came to an end when he graduated from high school six years ago. frankie says he never told his parents or grandparents about his discomfort around sandusky. do you feel he was ever attracted to you? >> i don't think so. >> reporter: if he did these things to other young boys, is he a monster? >> i would say yes. >> reporter: you're not one of those boys? >> no. >> reporter: and probst stressed to me sandusky helped him through some tough times in his life but yobd that, he would not defend him in any way, even when sandusky kuld him to testify on his behalf two years ago, he did not want to talk. >> so difficult, so difficult. >> absolutely. >> natalie morales thank you so much. it is now 7:15. hugh grant took a starring

role in the courtroom monday, called to testify at public hearings about alleged hacking by the british tabloid press. nbc's stephanie gosk is in london, she's got details on that. stephanie, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, matt. british prime minister david cameron called for this inquiry to investigate the ethics and practices of the british press, which you'll hear in a moment is that hugh grant is calling on the government to regulate the media as a whole. >> the tabloid press has had to steal british citizens privacy for their own profit, very often vulnerable citizens as a scandal. >> reporter: grant hurled a string of accusations against the british tabloids, lies, invasions of privacy, phone hacking. the paparazzi, grant says, have terrorized him and his girlfriends for years, including

a woman grant admits he had a brief affair with and gave birth to his child this fall. >> they followed her around, a single pregnant woman, she was being tailed by paparazzi, with unin particular who frightened her a lot. >> reporter: grant says he tried to keep the birth a secret, but claims the "daily mail" illegally acquired leaked information from the hospital. >> "the daily mail" seemed to have all the information, the details of the hospital and the fake name, et cetera. >> reporter: in a statement the paper says it unequivocally denies it received information from a source at the hospital. grant also accused its sister tabloid "the mail" on sunday of phone hacking to get information on a story with his relationship with jemima kan in 2007. >> i cannot shi think of any conceivable source in "the mail" on sunday except the voice messages on my mobile and cell phone. >> reporter: in a statement "the

mail" on sunday calls the allegations mendacious spears. they also heard from the parents of millie dowler. >> it clicked through on to her voice mail so i heard her voice and i was, it was just like, she's picked up her voice mail, she's alive! >> reporter: sadly, she was not but her parents' suffering triggered the initial firestorm that forced the "news of the world" to go under but now the practices of the entire british press are under fire. the testimony is going to continue all week, including appearances from other celebrities, the author of the harry potter books, j.k.rowling and actress sienna miller. >> stephanie gosk, thank you, appreciate it. let's get a check of the rest of the top stories. natalie is at the news desk. >> we begin in egypt where

in just a couple of days most americans will be cooking their thanksgiving turkey. did you know more cooking fires occur on thanksgiving than any other day of the year, many involving turkey deep fryers. nbc's tom costello is at the montgomery county fire academy in rockville, maryland. it sounds like difficult news. >> reporter: matt, good morning to you. we'll show you a classic mistake people make this time of year, take a turkey, frozen turkey and dip it into a pot of overflowing boiling water and the concern is that very quickly that can create a fire, a flame over, pose a risk not only to your house but also to anybody who is nearby. it's happening more and more every year. as those deep turkey fryers become more popular, they also mean more serious accidents. more than 1,000 house fires etch year and serious injuries.

very italian and traditional. each has a little italian twist to it. garlic, thyme. >> carrots, onion and celery sauteing. >> the basics sauteing with butter, olive oil, parsley, rosemary, thyme and chestnuts. >> i'll stir that around. >> we've ground lemon and chitka. we add two eggs. >> can you do without the egg zpls. >> the eggs hold its shape so you've got to have the eggs. you can dump all of that in here. >> looks beautiful. >> it's great, and then, if it all fits, wite add chicken brot to keep it moist and toasted -- >> ciabata bread. >> great. matt wasn't sure how to say it. >> through the italian interpreter. >> it bakes at 400 degrees. the trick to making is cover with tin foil with butter, cook

for 25 minutes. >> i've gone over my at the loed time. >> can a vegetarian stuffing be as flairful as one with meat? >> it can be. >> how so? >> roasted vegetables with butter you saute. i add leeks, they have an oniony but mild flavor. you can add onions. you have to add a lot of spices. >> apples, interesting to give it sweetness. spice for warmth, lemon zest and thyme. >> lots of thyme. >> so lots of fresh ingredients. >> giada, really nice. >> over here, ann, we've soaked dried cranberries, sweet, in a little bit of vegetable broth. you let them sit for a bit so they plump up, three eggs to hold it together and you put all of that in here, with some toasted sourdough bread. you can do any bread you want, and you mix it all together and pop it in here. you bake this, again, cover it with a little bit of tin foil

for 25 minutes and take it off for another 15 and the last five minutes, i top with goat cheese. >> the pilgrims always work with goat cheese. i think that's really nice. >> adds an extra touch and beautiful color. all of these can be made the day of, today, actually, a couple of days before and bake them off before you eat. >> a lot of people going gluten free. >> i know it's not a sexy word to say gluten free but this is a gluten free stuffing. po portab portobello mushrooms, and onions, nice and chunky, gives it lots of flavor and then i cooked some wild and brown rice and you toss that in there and again you can find brown rice nowadays in a bag already cooked so you can cut all of these corners if you want to and a little bit of fresh thyme, fresh herbs are key and then a little bit of salt and pepper, saute this all together. this does not get baked. once you do it like this and flavor it all, you top it, i

like to top it with hazelnuts and brakon. you can leave those two out if you want to. at this point, saute it a couple of minutes and you're done. reheat it the day of. >> so i have rafi's turkey sausage. who is rafi? >> my big inspiration in cooking. >> this is your favorite? >> actually the one i made with matt is my favorite. >> oh! >> don't get me started. >> it's her favorite, ooh. >> this is my aunt's favorite and a lot of my family. it's a departicipate. she makes this one on thanksgiving and i make mine and we see whose goes first. it's a competition. >> a little family feud. >> it's a little healthier and turkey day so we figured we'd stick with it. red pepper, she likes kick, spicy. parmesan cheese. >> dump the whole thing? >> dump it all in here and chestnuts, because they're very italian, cornbread, because she likes the cornbread thing. >> i do, too.

>> dump it all in -- >> i like ray's recipe better i might add. >> saute lightly with white wine. my aunt is really into the white wine. >> so are we. >> chicken broth. >> okay. >> and you toss it all together with the cornbread, and again you bake it in the oven, 400 degrees, covered with a little bit of tin foil with but thor to keep it moist and take it off. >> could you put this in the turkey? >> you could put any of these in the turkey. >> is there a way when you put this emin the could haven to keep them from drying out? you want to make sure they're moist. >> correct. if you make this today and leave it in the fridge, what you do the day of is add a little bit of chicken broth and in your instance you'd do vegetable broth, add chicken broth to keep it moist and throw it in the oven. >> delicious. >> in raffy's instance, pour more white wine over the top. >> you know my aunt rafy or what? >> giada thank you so much. happy thanksgiving.

candidates for the highest office in our land. >> i'm glad you're not managing anybody's campaign. i work with clinton in '92 and he started the ball rolling with the sax. >> he did it. richard nixon did "sock it to me, sock it to me." >> this is why we get to see them as people. if you think about the debates and the news, those are synthet synthetic, so this is where they talk, make fun of themselves. it can backfire, i think cain looked completely lost on letterman. its he a natural thing now to do it. >> does this overemphasize the fact that candidates are seeking out these venues as opposed to more serious ven views. >> it's not either/or. if you want to read -- young people don't watch news, that's the only way to get to them. >> during the time they're supposed to be serious they often look like buffoons. they look like larry, curly and moe. >> it's important to put the real person forward so we can

see them. they have to know when not to answer certain questions. when president clinton didn't know whether to say boxers versus briefs, it was a whoops. >> by the way, he's a human being. these are human beings. let's see them that way. >> you're going to see people's foibles, and that allows you to decide whether you like them or not. >> candidates think they'll get a free ride or easy interview. >> you better bring your "a" game. >> i don't want your foibles to be shown when i'm going to figure out how i'm going to feed my three children. >> i'd like to see your foibles before i elect you. interracial relationships census figures are on the rise, the percent erage was 14.6 in 2. >> i was living in san francisco before i moved here, for 17 years, and white people are not the majority in san francisco so you're accustomed to seeing the mixing of races. my daughter came home with a

very dark skinned filipino boy as a date, and i, after it was over, kate, sort of approaching the subject. she said, what are you talking about? and i thought oh my god, it's a new color blind. i loved it. >> it's true. i went to a restaurant all young people and it was -- usually restaurants are more white or more black, that's just the reality and this was a total, it was so -- when you and i started dating five years ago it was a little different. >> this is a little weird. >> so it's widely accepted and it's great, there's not the stigma there once was. >> we're the last generation. >> is that to say there are no racial relationships that present themselves? >> i think black/white is bigger than white/asian, perhaps latino. >> or black and latino. really what it comes down to is we're the last generation that brings in that heaviness, that weight of the past, and the next generation of young people, they're being raised to believe that they can be anything, they can go anywhere, they can date

anybody. so when they do, we have to pull back on our innate prejudice and let them. >> because we'll still look at a couple, that's interracial. we'll put a label on it. not that it's bad. >> they don't think about it in that way. i have friends, contemporaries told by their parents, don't bring home a white girl, absolutely. and interestingly enough, they have raised their children to go to schools in places where it's extremely mixed and they can't say that to their kids. that's something that we've learned. >> let's move on, speaking of learning, the next topic is fertility map. this is interesting, a survey demonstrated many, many women don't realize, don't know some basic facts about fertility, particularly when fertility drops off and the question is, we see so many celebrities out there having babies past the age of 40. do you think women are starting to get the wrong perception? >> i think we as women who work outside of the house have this biological clock always ticking.

if you have a baby before 15, you're a high risk pregnancy. baby after 42, a high risk pregnancy and during the time when you really want to make your year, more fertile time and what do you do? i do think women know that their chance of having a baby drops off as they get older. >> i was going to say -- >> but it's not the same for men. >> i think we do know and that's the pressure. >> this survey suggests women of a certain age and i'm in the category are in some kind of denial. >> i am an older dad, i have a grown daughter who is 24 and i have an 4 and an 8 years old and i'm in my early 50s, kind of, and i'm a better dad now than i would have been. i'm a better executive than i was at 27. i think an older parent is great. you don't sweat the things, i love being a parent older. >> do you think that hollywood is selling it -- >> it's my regret right now and i didn't think it would be. >> it's not too late. >> i'll be 50 years old in

anthony was found not guilty of murdering her daughter, kay lee, a verdict that sent shock waves through much of the country. in his new book "inside the mind of casey anthony" forensic psychology dr. keith ablow draws interesting conclusions about the case. in writing and researching the book he did not speak to george or cindy anthony or casey. you don't have a connection to this case per se. what is your qualification to write a book like this? >> absolutely. listen when you create a psychological profile of somebody you have to get enough sources so her friends, boyfriends, relatives, enumerable sources, thousands of pages of documents to piece together who was this woman and why did this happened. we know what happened. >> so many people wonder about that. i know one thing we did was pour over some of the police interviews in this case. if the trial established one thing beyond a reasonable doubt she's an accomplished liar.

what do you see in that behavior? >> this is a woman with no internal self. she grew up with a psychological assassin for a mother. we're talking about somebody who didn't even know her own daughter was seven months pregnant. can you imagine? >> what does that term mean? >> she was intent on not recognizing casey anthony as a real person, and somebody worthy of responding to in a genuine fashion. why else would she permit her father, why would cindy anthony permit her husband to be at the foot of the bed when casey anthony delivered kay lcaylee? can you imagine the humiliation? she wasn't there. >> i know you draw a lot of conclusions in particular from the episode where george anthony is in the delivery room as his daughter gives birth. >> outrageous. >> playing devil's a advocate. >> i knew you'd do that. >> some would say who would support her? >> at the foot of the bed? if you didn't have the facts of

not knowing that her daughter was pregnant for seven months, of the fact when they find the car, the car has been missing for a month. they've been told listen, you no he what? we found it two weeks ago and george anthony says it smelled like death to me and i worried whether my granddaughter's corpse might have been in there. he goes to his ten buck an hour job as a security guard. this is who casey anthony grew up with. are we surprised? >> you say are we surprised? you think casey anthony killed her daughter? >> i present five theories. the theory that holds the most water psychologically, i'm not saying this happened but psychologically, if you lined up ducks in a row, you'd say the night when cindy anthony threatened to take caylee from casey was the end of the line. i'm not going to watch my daughter annihilated like i was. she got a tattoo saying "beautiful life" her daughter's untortured relatively compared to her own and released her to

a lot stronger, a lot braver. >> reporter: like her dad, ryan fights, too, her opponent? cancer. it's a very rare cancer. what was it that led to that moment when you realized your daughter was sick? >> she had a few headaches, i went to get her out of her room and she was unresponsive because she had a major seizure. >> she suffered major brain damage and after surgery to remove a tumor her parents received bad news. >> the doctor came and said this is cancer, and it might be too late already. >> because of how rare her cancer was, the christian family was referred to st. jude children's research hospital, a world leader in this kind of cancer. >> ryan has a cancer called aderoncourttal carcinoma. a cancer of the adrenal gland. >> the protocol originated at st. jude and they started an international registry to study the disease. after surgery and treatment, ryan was cancer free for eight months, but then a routine scan

would bring more devastating news. >> there were some nodules that showed up in her lungs, so they went in and did a biopsy of her lungs just to see if it was cancerous and it was. >> reporter: after surgery to remove those nodules, more were discovered. so today, her doctors are in a race against time to save her life. >> i'd love to get rid of them but if i can't get rid of them the next thing is to keep them there and under control. >> reporter: i spent some quality time with ryan on her first trip to new york city. so i hear that rock center, the ice rink has always been something that you wanted to do. is that true? >> yes. >> tell me about your dream about coming here. >> well, last year when i was in the hospital, i kept asking like when could i skate again. >> she had a special surprise from someone who also fought a personal battle with cancer and won. you know how you said you love this very handsome skater named scott hamilton?
