indiana and pennsylvania. here's a live picture now from tahrir square. millions of people have been protesting since saturday demanding a swift end to military rule. richard engel has more on that. >> for the first time recognizing the seriousness of the situation, the egyptian military did today offer to make some concessions to the demonstrators. who took over from president mubarak after he was toppled gave a rare televised address. he has accepted the resignation of egypt's government and also said that presidential elections will be moved forward and take place in june 2012. the reaction was almost immediately from the crowds here in tahrir square and there are now hundreds of thousands of people in tahrir. they cried out almost in unison unjust, unjust. they want the military to step down immediately. they want a civilian government to take charge.

they don't trust the military. they don't trust field marshal to implement democracy as the government, as the military has promised to do. what we're seeing right now is something of a showdown. the protesters say they will stay here, but but in that speech he said that these protests are trying to upset egypt and destroy the country's economy. will the military now try to move in and break up these demonstrations, which is what mubarak did and which is what ultimately brought down his government. richard engel, nbc news in cairo. coming up tonight at 5:00, we talked to the mother of the georgetown student arrested in egypt. all right, if you're heading out of town tomorrow, folks, be aware of some rain that could put a big damper on your commute. >> veronica johnson is joining us now and, veronica, we've gotten a real drenching today. >> that's right, we have. we picked up between a third and

a half inch of rain. now, that's not a ton of rain, but the fact is, what we have gotten that persistent rain throughout the day really has affected traffic out there today from the morning rush to the afternoon rush going a little slow. you can see the headlights there. temperatures, though, not bad. they've been in the mid-50s with a calm wind today. a bit of a light wind out of the south throughout the day today. you can see on the radar, last couple of hours the emotion of that rain southwest to northeast moving through. the heaviest rain up to the north, northern maryland where you can see the shades there of dark green and yellow up around haguerstown, frederick and howard county and baltimore county and then another pocket right around prince george's county and montgomery county that is moving northeastward on through. for the most part, bulk of the area looking at relatively light rain showers coming through the area. i think it will be tomorrow morning when we get the next wave of moderate and heavy rains moving through our area. so, some wet weather, nothing

afford to feed your family and stuff. >> reporter: many have been hit hard by the sagging economy, pulling together a thanksgiving dinner can be difficult, if not impossible. but this morning thousands of ward 8 residents got a helping hand, free turkeys. >> i got a big family. i got grandkids. you know, i'm here for my grandkids. >> reporter: councilman marion barry began the turkey give away four years ago. a billing dispute caused some distribution problems last year, but this morning all went well. 2,000 turkeys are being given away, ensuring a very happy thanksgiving for many in ward 8. >> it means a great deal to me, i'm unemployed and this is fantastic, you know, for the community. and, you know, just thank god for a turkey this year. >> my niece's house and we're just going to have a wonderful, wonderful, just getting together for the occasion is going to be pretty much as good as the turkey. >> a lot of the people here

texas officials found a plane filled with pot, but no passengers, no pilot. officials say the twin engine plane skidded off the runway near houston last night. they have no idea how many people were aboard because by the time they responded to the scene everyone got away. there were several bundles of marijuana. officials say the plane was not scheduled to land at the airport and the pilot also never made contact with the control tower. oh, baby. justin bieber took a paternity test today to determine whether he's the father of a child as claimed by a fan. >> now, it's the baby's mother turn. the 17-year-old pop star insists he didn't have a relationship with maria yader back stage at

well, yeah, you saw it earlier on the camera. we have more fog that's developing across the area. 57 degrees now. couple minutes you're going to see what happeneds to that temperature, to the mercury overnight. 3 in d.c. and 2.5 in leesburg. again, still some fog around the area and patchy fog during the overnight and early part of the day tomorrow. in the area shaded in yellow right around northern prince george's county some moderate rain falling there making its way northeastward and on through the area, we'll have generally just rain showers and nothing too heavy for the overnight, but tomorrow morning, i think we're going to see heavier rain. 60 degrees by 9:00. 62 by 11:00 p.m. and then 64 by 5:00 and 7:00 a.m. we're going to see the mercury rise as this warm front makes its way northeastward through the area. then tomorrow, about 10:00, 11:00 a.m. or so the weather front will move through and our temperatures will start falling and we'll clear out, breezy,

georgetown university student from jefferson city, missouri. he's on the far right in this video. the students are accused of throwing molotov cocktails at security forces. we'll have more at 5:00. stocks ended down on a relatively flat note today on wall street. dow industrials fell 53 points. the nasdaq was off by a single point and the s&p 500 closed four points lower. well, in just two days many americans will, of course, be cooking a thanksgiving turkey and the holiday is responsible, you should know, for more cooking fires than any other day of the year. nbc's tom costello has an important warning tonight, especially if you plan to fry your turkey. >> reporter: it's happening more and more every year. as those deep turkey friers become more popular, they also mean more serious accidents. more than 1,000 house fires each year and serious injuries.

british tabloids are making headlines today. this all stems from the uk hacking scandal that brought down the news of the world tabloid earlier this year. today british actor hugh grant testified at the official inquiry into the scandal. stephanie gosk reports. >> reporter: in front of a british judge, hugh grant hurled a string of accusations at nearly all the british tabloids. lies, invasion of privacy and phone hacking. the paparazzi, grant says, has terrorized him and his girlfriends for years. including a woman grant admits he had a brief affair with and gave birth to his child this fall. >> they followed her around, she was a single, pregnant woman. she was being tailed by paparazzi. one in particular who frightened her a lot. >> reporter: grant says he tried to keep the birth a secret, but claims the "daily mail" illegally acquired leaked information from the hospital.

she's wintering here at the national aquarium in the ba basement of the commerce department. if you've never seen one, you need to come take a look. >> they're not that common. there's less than 100 known animals in the wild. they all come from one spot, one area in louisiana. this is the first time in the area we had one in the area. >> albino alligators are a genetic mistake. both parents harbor a recesssive gene that prevents them from creating pigment. it's a brown alligator without the brown and that pigment is critical to their survival. it hps them hide in the swamp from predators. a white alligator, hasn't got a chance. >> be a bright white beacon for somebody to find and eat. >> reporter: born on an alligator farm and immediately taken out for her protection. she'll spend the rest of her life in a sanctuary. while she's here in washington, her handler is trying to teach her to target feed by wiggling

dead mice in the water so she can learn to strike at them. that's how they feed. she's pretty striking herself. the white skin seems to glow. she's a strange beauty. but that white skin can also affect her health. alligators are gold blooded and they need to rest in the sun. it heats them up and energizes their metabolisms. albino's can't sun themselves, the skin, lacking that protective pigment, will burn and blister. so, she's lucky to be in captivity. oliander now is about 20 pounds and slightly more than four feet long, but she's going to become a big girl. >> she's going to get just as big as a normal female alligator, which can be eight to ten feet in length and over 300 pounds. >> she will everchally outgrow this exhibit. she'll only be here until february. don't miss this chance to see a rare white this winter. >> the national aquarium at the commerce department in the

have. these are pictures of a risky rescue of a 9-year-old girl in southern china. the girl managed to wedge herself in the gap between two houses. she was apparently tried to hide from her parents to avoid being punished. firefighters broke through the wall to reach the child. she could barely moved. after 40 minutes they pulled her free. remarkably, she escaped with minor injuries. prosecutors in washington state are contemplating a plea deal for the so-called barefoot bandit. colton harris moore is expected to plead guilty next month to nearly 30 burglary and other charges. the deal would give him about nine years in prison and victims would get more than a million dollars restitution from the proceeds of a book and movie deal chronicling the multi-state crime spree. authorities caught him last year in the bahamas after she pent two years on the run. still to come on news 4, an
