springfield bank robbery? fairfax county police are looking into it. they say it was a petite blonde who robbed the bb& t on keen mill road tuesday afternoon. >> we saw the police cars there and when we saw the cars, you know, you get a little worried. >> reporter: travel agent ann thompson works next to the bank. she said no one heard a thing as the heist went down. police william county police have already identified 26-year-old stephanie lynn schwab as a suspect in a friday morning robbery of a virginia commerce bank. on saturday, fairfax county police believe it was schwab who was involved in a carjacking posing as a college student in tysons, too. police say she allegedly told the customer she had run out of gas and needed a lift. when the customer drove schwab to a gas station, schwab pulled out a knife and stole her 2003 acu acura. back at the scene of the latest incident, preferred travel

agents have mixed reactions to the idea that a woman, as young looking at schwab, could be linked to the bb&t robbery. >> you can't tell by the way somebody looks. >> she looks very young. way too young and very wholesome looking. she looks like a nice girl, to be honest. you wouldn't think. you would never suspect. >> well, police are looking for a 2003 silver acura with virginia tags xek8095. the website inside nova.com tonight is reporting that stephanie schwab was reportedly a former member of the ms 13 street gang. reporting live in springfield, i'm jane watrel, back to you, jim. >> all right, jane, thank you. traffic on the beltway is a mess in montgomery county. a tractor trailer jackknifed caught crashing into a jersey barrier around 2:00 this afternoon on the inner loop of 495. it is just passed the 270 split

in bethesda. hazmat crews called out to clean up diesel fuel. traffic has been backed up several miles into fairfax county. no injuries and no called on what made this truck jackknife. >> nasty. >> really nasty. boy, a nasty day for that to be happening. rainy, soggy, damp. we're not even close to being done with this wet weather yet. >> doug kammerer is in storm center 4. >> the main storm still well to the west of us and we'll have to go through this for another 12 to 18 hours before we're all said and done with the raintop temperature 55 degrees and winds out of the south at 3 miles per hour. still seeing light fog in some portions of the area and most of the rain. look at the rain, most of the rain moving to the north and east of the region. right now 55 in washington, but 46 up towards frederick and that's where the cooler air lies and frederickburg coming in with a temperature of 59 degrees. you can see where the rain is.

most of it to maryland and portions of fairfax county and most of it into maryland and most of northern virginia tartitart tart starting to see the end with light rain. we're looking at a much bigger scenario as far as the rain is concerned. take a look at what i'm talking about. look at all the rain to the south and west of us. even strong thunderstorm activity heading in towards parts of the southeast right now. i'll show you how that is going to affect us overnight tonight and through the day tomorrow and then how it affects your thanksgiving because it will have an impact. i'll show you how, coming up. >> thanks, doug. today egypt's military leader told the nation, elections will be held there in june. but it was not enough to calm growing anger among residents. tens of thousands of people gathered in cairo's tahrir square demanding a much quicker way to end. the protests began on saturday and some 29 people have been killing after clashing with the

military forces. today word three american college students have been arrested in cairo in connection with those protests. one of those students have connections to our area. >> those spirited protests that helped president mubarak from power as they call for the military leadership to replace him to step aside to replace that democracy. three american students charged with taking part in the violent protests and their fates have yet to be determined. one of them, as you said a student from georgetown university. three young americans, obvious expressions of fear on their faces. they've been detained in cairo for allegedly throwing molotov caulk tiles at police during uprising there. derek sweeney seen on the right in this video is among them. as students leave the georgetown campus today for thanksgiving break, for some thoughts of a classmate far from home. >> we're all really worried everyone we talked to and we hope he gets home safe and that

everything works out. >> reporter: sweeney is an economics major at georgetown. this past february, until may, he interned into the capitol hill office. a spokesperson for the lawmaker describes derek as outstanding and outgoing. the spokesperson also says that the congress has been monitoring the situation and wants to make sure all the students are treated fairly as american citizens. this video, purportedly shows one of the american students in the crowd. his face partially covered by a bandan bandanna. no confirmation of who that video shows. and this picture, what could be molotov cocktails in the trio of students. police in egypt say the students did not have their passports on them when they were arrested. another student we spoke to at georgetown said discussion of sweeney's predicament and she, too, plans to study abroad stoon. in argentina. while the situation there isn't as volatile, this, at the very least, is a solemn reminder of

study abroad. >> i know it's georgetown policy you're not supposed to protest when you're abroad. i guess the state department is getting involved now. >> now, the u.s. embassy in egypt, the department of state and other u.s. entities are also watching the situation and the department of state has issued a travel alert for americans living or traveling in egypt. alerts are issued when regime changes or demonstrations occur. events that could put americans at peril in any given country. sweeney's family in home state of missouri said his plan was to be home for christmas and the hope is this arrest won't delay that homecoming. now to the race for the white house tonight where the gop contenders are getting ready for tonight's big debate. they're meeting at constitution hall here. comes as new national polls include a new frontrunner for the republican pact. according to cnn and quinnipiac university surveys.

tonight's debate comes six weeks to the day from the first nominating contests in iowa. the "occupy wall street" protesters who left new york two weeks ago arrived in d.c. this afternoon. some two dozen protesters kicked off the 240-mile march and it grew to about 40 people. not all of the original marchers made it, but the march picked up new people and marchers endured blisters, bad weather, bad roads and bridges. one man even did it without his shoes. the group participated in an "occupy" rally in alexandria when they arrived around noon. they joined the encampment in mcpherson square. one protester said this march was for those inspired outside of encampment and rallies. >> i know that marching, for example, is something that in the past has inspired a lot of people. it's another form of nonviolent protests and action. and we thought that this would be, you know, a new way, a new medium for the occupation.

>> tomorrow the occupiers will hold a rally protesting what they call the failure by the supercommittee to reach a deal that would ease the tax burden on average americans. montgomery county tonight is dealing with another flash mob robbery and it was all caught on tape. 50 teenagers hit a 7-eleven in silver spring. police are searching for all the teens who were involved and now there's even talk about making the law tougher for teens who participate in these crimes. news 4 darcy spencer is live in rockville with new details for us. darcy? >> well, jim, you may remember there was a similar flash mob back in germantown in august. when it happened, again, saturday night the montgomery county councilman said he realized young people are not taking this crime serious enough. in fact, he says they think it's funny. well, he wants to get their attention by making this crime a felony. the crime caught on surveillance video. police say as many as 50 teens

swarmed into this 7-eleven store on tech road in silver spring around 11:30 saturday night. some stole candy bars, chips and sodas and walked out without paying. there was a very similar crime involving two dozen teens at a germantown 7-eleven in august. >> once we heard that it had happened again, it was clear to us that our worst fears were being realized and that is that kids took this not seriously and thought that this was something that was funny and didn't have any consequences associated with it. >> reporter: montgomery county councilman is working to strength on the law to make committing these types of crimes not just a misdemeanor shoplifting offense, but a felony. theft by mob. >> we want to make sure that folks understand right away our kids understand that this is a serious crime. this is, this is, you know, stealing. and it just won't be tolerated. >> reporter: police have identified at least half a dozen of the kids involved in saturday's theft. authorities say they may have been attending a birthday party

in the area. many we spoke to today support a tougher law that could send those involved in these crimes to jail. >> i think that's fair. >> to make it a felony? >> to make it a felony. you know, that's not just, that's vandalizing, theft and violence. >> reporter: the latest incident is, once again, stirring the debate over a teen curfew that's being considered in the county. while some argue it shows the need for such a law and kids under 18 councilman phil andrews disagrees. >> the idea of having a curfew that applies 365 days a year against anybody under 18 to possibly have an effect in a few events a year is not a reasonable tradeoff. >> just wrapped up an interview with the police chief and he told me they now realize that as many as 70 teens were in that store saturday night, but he says not everyone was stealing items. we're going to have a complete update on this investigation, including what the chief thinks about this proposed curfew law.

were you crying? yeah. there are reports tonight of two new allegations against former penn state football coach jerry san dusky. these new cases involve victims who are still under the age of 18. sandusky is already charged with sexually abusing eight boys during a 15-year period. today a judge pushed his initial court hearing back one week for logistical needs. on capitol hill today, the senate held its first congressional hearing to see if there should be changes in federal laws that protect children. well, it's the time of year when many of us are giving thanks for all that we have, but for one virginia woman and her family, this thanksgiving is going to be extra special.

>> hi, jim. cystic fibrosis is a genetic disease that causes problems with breathing and digestion. really affect the whole body and often it causes death at an early age. most doctors agree, it's nearly impossible for women with cf to have children. they just don't have the lung function to carry a baby to term. but one woman has beaten the odds proving that nearly impossible really means that there is still a chance. >> i was diagnosed when i was 6 months old, i really don't know anything different. >> reporter: mary lee phillips is hardly suffering from cystic fibrosis. instead, she's living with it. >> i have about an hour to three-hour treatment routine. i'm really lucky that i have the care that i have. >> reporter: her treatment includes using this vest, which vibrates, helping to break up the mucus in her lungs. it's all helped her to maintain a healthy lifestyle, which includes running marathons and

triathl triathlons, yet doctors always told her, she'd never be able to have a baby, because cystic fibrosis or cf not only makes it tough to breathe, it also causes nutritional deficiencies, diabetes and infertility. >> i always thought maybe in my 30s if i'm still healthy i'll think about adoption. i never thought that i would be able to carry my own kids. >> reporter: sure enough at the age of 28, phillips got pregnant. >> i was completely shocked. completely shocked. i did not believe it was possible and then we started seeing every doctor to see, what do we do? >> the biggest thing we were worried about is that the baby would not get enough nutritional support from the mother to be able to grow adequately. >> reporter: she has been specializing in high-risk pregnancies at georgetown university hospital for more than 20 years. but she'd never had a patient like phillips before. >> she was the first patient with cf that i had taken care

of. >> reporter: phillips started seeing a team of doctors including a cardiologist, a pulmonologist and a nutritionist. she had weekly sonograms to make sure that baby got enough nutrients to grow. there were times when things got rough. >> i remember just getting very, very sick and just coming into this room that we had already decorated and just rocking in this chair and thinking, this is all going to be worth it. >> reporter: but she says between her own good health, newer technology and the team she had helping her, she beat the odds. becoming one of the first cf patients to have a healthy baby at georgetown hospital. >> it was incredible. >> reporter: jack was born six months ago. he came about 3 1/2 weeks early, but he weighed a healthy five pounds. >> just shows you no matter how many patients you take care of and how many years you spend, you can always learn and you can always be amazed by just people,

good people. >> i couldn't be more thankful for anything in the world. >> right now there are only about 100 successful pregnancies in cystic fibrosis women each year, but doctors do expect that number will grow. jim, wendy? >> good for her. >> that is a cute baby. >> he is cute. looks a lot like her. good for them. that's wonderful. doug joins us now and we're talking nothing but rain, rain and more rain still. >> it is just dreary. >> when the rain ends tomorrow, the winds will kick in and te temperatures will go back down. temperatures believe it or not tonight, will go way up. >> get swampy. >> it will. you know, especially down where you live. i'm expecting some fog early tomorrow morning but temperatures could rise by about ten degrees by now and the time you wake up tomorrow morning. that is the warm air ahead of this storm system. first off, let's look outside and show you just how nice things are on this beautiful tuesday afternoon.

yeah. yeah. if you tell them that it's nice out there, maybe we'll start to think about it. we'll look at the clouds and fog outside and light rain, too. current temperatures 55 degrees and winds right now out of the south, southeast at five miles per hour. we are dealing with some fog. dulles coming in with half mile visibility and give yourself extra time out there on those roadways. they're wet, reduced visibility. once again, give yourself extra time. 46 right now in hagueertown. even further down to the south around richmond, low 60s and that's the kind of warmer air that will make its way our way over the next few hours. light to moderate rain in through howard county and prince george's county and the rest of the area just seeing some scattered shower activity, wouldn't be surprised to see a little bit of drizzle leftover here but that's really about if and we'll zoom on in. in the district, you can see really the potomac, almost the

dividing line between this area of rain. as we widen out, though, the main storm system, it's still way out to the west around cincinnati. you can see the spiral right there of that area of low pressure, but this is the rain that we have to get through. strong storms down through the atlanta area and birmingham and warmer air make its way up here, too. we'll experience the potential for some delays tomorrow. tomorrow, in new york city, you may not be flying to new york, but probably a good idea to see if your plane makes its way through new york city. tomorrow, rain, isolated thunder early but then lingering afternoon showers with a high around 47. some delays tomorrow in new york. also philadelphia, expect delays there. chicago looks good, temperatures around 48. obviously a big hub for your united flights. 65 in raleigh, usairways fly out of there and down in there orlando, if you're thinking get warm for the end of november, orlando looking good with a high temperature of 83 degrees tomorrow afternoon. some areas of rain heavy to the north and to the east.

47 to 57 degrees. overnight tonight, this is where we'll start to see the temperatures actually rise between 56 and 64 degrees tomorrow morning. you're going to step outside and it will be nice and mild, but the winds will start to shift out of the west and then eventually out of the northwest and we'll see our temperatures fall tomorrow from around 64 early down to around 57 by 2:00 or 3:00 in the afternoon with a few showers left over tomorrow. it will be rather windy. 15 to 25-mile-per-hour winds and gusting higher than that. right now, thursday, friday and saturday look beautiful. thanksgiving really looks like a nice day with plenty of sunshine and high of around 57 degrees. good for all the traveling that is going on there and anything else that's happening. a lot of people on thanksgiving start putting up their holiday lights. if that's you, we want to see pictures of that house. send us those pictures at weather@nbcwashington.com. i'll do the weather live in numerous front yards around the area and we want to come to your house. >> that will be fun. all right. thank you, doug. still to come tonight on news 4 at 5:00, a possible break

the university of california davis officers seen pepper spraying students is dealing with an attack from computer hackers now. an internet hacking group called anonymous posted the video online that posts john pikes personal information. in the ten-minute video a computer altered voice says pike's home address, cell phone and e-mail address, the group also tells pike to "expect our wrath." and threatens, "we will make you squeal." hundreds of d.c. national guard families are getting help to make thanksgiving this year special. harris teeter paired up to host "operation home front" today at the d.c. armory. supplies 400 families with the turkey and the trimmings. many families receiving the supplies have loved ones that are deployed in afghanistan or service members that just recently returned to the u.s. and in ward 8, residents

hello, everybody. welcome back. i'm meteorologist doug kammerer in storm center. watching that rain out there right now. most of maryland seeing the rain and parts of virginia see things dry out a little bit. that's not going to last for long. we will still see wet roadways. say that three times fast. you'll also continue to see some mist and drizzle out there. look down to the south and west in towards tennessee and kentucky and a line of very heavy showers and thunderstorms. that is moving our way, too. it should move through overnight tonight and into early tomorrow morning, but then we're going to see some even bigger changes on the back side of that front. i'll break it down for you one more time coming up in a few

minutes. >> all right. the u.s. attorney released some new tapes today in the case of former prince george's county executive jack johnson. he's charged in a federal corruption probe that spans the county. he's accused of taking bribes from developers. news 4 aaron gillcrest joins us from outside the courthouse. aaron? >> the u.s. attorney released this video. he's using it as part of his memo on sentencing for jack johnson. essentially, he wants the judge, when it comes time to sentence jack johnson to throw the book at him. take a look at this video. you'll see jack johnson entering a conference in laurel. this video is taped by the fbi and part of a video jack sun johnson had with a dr. big who is a doctor and developer here in the county and the u.s. attorney says in this county you'll see jack johnson take some cash off the desk as part of this conversation.

a lot of small talk that was taped the same morning that jack johnson was arrested last november and later on in the conversation, you'll hear jack johnson talk about the value of dr. big knowing someone who knows the inner workings of the financial system and offer some assistance with working through development and building deals. take a listen to some of this audio. >> if you don't have any experience, i mean, so even the guys who have been working in building are having problems. new people on the block -- >> there's more than 15 minutes of video from that particular conversation. the u.s. attorney in his memo on sentencing says that there are several conversations jack johnson had with that person and other developers here in the county and, obviously, with his wife. we heard some of that audio last week. again, this is going to be used on december 6th when the judge is supposed to sentence jack johnson from his guilty plea this past june.

for now live outside the federal courthouse in greenbelt. back to you. >> thanks, aaron. they're off, the new intercounty connector is open. the road connects i-270 in gathersbering with i-95 in laurel. news 4 took a test drive during morning rush hour today. took us ten minutes to get from georgia avenue to i-95. and on the trip back, using roads other than the icc it took nearly twice as long. when tolls take effect that trip would cost $3.90, but until december 5th, the road is free. an unprecedented agreement has been made between walmart and washington. the retailer is making a number of commitments as it opens its first stores in the city. walmart is promising to run job fairs and recruitment centers to hire d.c. residents for the six new stores. to invest 7 $21 million over the next seven years and create

committees between the stores and the communities they serve. and to recruit local businesses for some of the ancillary services, such as coffee shops and shoe repair shops that are inside the walmart stores. this agreement also calls for the retailer to spend $2 million to improve bus stops and bike stands. there were scores of people at fedex field this rainy afternoon in prince george's county, but they weren't there for the football game. the ninth annual harvest feast turkey give away for thousands of families. tom surewood joins us now from the news room on what has become a tradition for the skins. tom? >> one of the biggest thanksgiving giveaways in our region and people lined up in the rain to take part. in the early afternoon, hundreds of volunteers rushed to assemble thanksgiving feasts for families. and even bags of toys for the needy children. and then thousands of individuals and families, some who had waited hours in the cold

rain were led inside fedex field. how long did you wait in line? >> i've been here since 9:00. >> 9:00 this morning? >> yes. it wasn't a bad wait. >> reporter: do you know how to cook that turkey? >> my husband is going to cook it, but don't tell him. >> he's not going to put it in one of the fryers is he? >> no, north carolina style. >> what does that mean? >> bake it and put everything in it. >> do you have enough bags? >> me, my mother and grandmother, i think so. >> how are you going to carry the turkey? >> i'm a strong man. the nfl redskins, fedex and several other firms along with prince george's county officials took part in the feast. including military veterans like ray gordon. >> i really believe that it's been a hard battle. for the united states of america to support their veterans a lot

toxic and dangerous toys the focus of the report that targets some toys that are for sale on store shelves. >> liz crenshaw is here with what parents need to know just in time for holiday shopping. >> wendy and jim, toys have become safer thanks to recent federal laws. we are seeing fewer recalls, but there are still potentially dangerous toys out there because not every toy for sale is tested for safety. u.s. public interest research group tested toys and products from major retailers and dollar stores from its annual trouble in toyland report. at a press conference today,

they released their finding. they included noisy toys that could cause hearing loss. they also warned about choking hazards. found several toys included small parts that violated the standard for children younger than 3 years old. once again, high levels of lead and thalates and found tested in some toys. they attended today's news conference and echoed u.s. bpurs warnings. >> one interesting thing about lead and other chemicals we investigate, they do not show up injury reports. it's a chronic, cumulative hazard that may not evidence itself until children are involved in later development. >> the toy industry association says providing safe toys for children is the toy industry's highest priority but assuring that all play is safe is a

if early bird specials aren't enough to lure shoppers into stores black friday. some retail giants are sweetening the pot with some free stuff. old navy giving out a limited number of free digital cameras to people who spend at least 40 bucks. jcpenney handing out free disney snow globes on black friday and sears giving away ornaments and tool bags. best buy, some of them offering a free outdoor movie and refreshments for you folks waiting in line. the holiday travel season is here, but delays can be added baggage for air travelers. the news 4 iteam is crunching the numbers for us to show you the most reliable times to fly.

jetblue says its flights are concentrated in the northeast and disruptive weather affected on-time performance this year. in particular, we were impacted by thunderstorms in new york city and hurricane irene in august. carman gill travels a lot for work and she noticed she's always delayed at night. >> it is annoying when you get delayed and you miss the connector. >> reporter: getting up early may be the real secret to success. during the month of september, 100% of flights arrived on time at dulles airport between 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. but at night, the rate plummets to 68%. >> first flight of the day typically that is an aircraft that has arrived the night before. if there are any kinks in the system, that gives the airline a huge amount of opportunity to work that out and get that aircraft in. >> reporter: rob says all airports have rush hours. >> for the smoothest experience,

frederickburg with a temperature of 59 degrees. give yourself time on the roadways. most of the rain in towards maryland and starting to see the rain back towards portions of loudon county and back towards manassas. more light rain there and more of a drizzle and a mist that will continue throughout the evening. heavier rain towards annapolis and right along route 50 and then up towards columbia into howard county. we'll continue toee the rain around our region and then a little bit of the break from the heaviest rain and we'll see that drizzle continuing and then look to the south and west. that's where the heaviest rain is right now. the main storm system itself is still well back to the west around the cincinnati area. and we're going to continue to watch as that moves to the north and east. but it's this frontal boundary right in here that will make its way in here over the next couple hours and we'll see dramatic changes in our weather. tomorrow, mostly cloudy, a few showers possible. i think most of the day tomorrow should be on the dry side, but windy with falling temperatures.
