grandios sxechlt arrogant. republicans and democrats have been pointing the finger at each other for the super failure of the super committee. but a new poll shows americans aren't happy with either party. according to a new reuters/ipsis poll 19% blamed both sides for failing to cut more than $1 trillion from the nation's deficit. when it came to most responsible, republicans came in with most votes, 18%. 13% blame the president and just 7% blamed democrats. before all the thanksgiving trimmings can be prepared, millions of americans need to get to their holiday destination. for many it's not just the crowds they'll be battling. jay gray joins us from chicago's o'hare airport. it's quiet right now. that's going to change in a few hours. >> reporter: no waiting right

now at o'hare airport, but that will change in a couple hours. they expect to see more than 200,000 passengers come through this airport today alone. there was a lot of rain here last night in chicago, and that's already caused delays. that's a problem people across the east coast will see as they gear up and get ready to have a holiday long weekend. it's going to be 44 million or more on the roads, on the rails or in the air as we start today and go through the thanksgiving weekend. that's up 4% from last year and it's the first time this year holiday travel has been up. that's good news economically. it's bad news if you're going to be one of those on the road or in the airports here. what i can tell you is if you plan to travel by air, call first. we saw that all the time. make sure your flight's on time and make sure you get here on plenty of time so you can get through the crowds sure to be here. lynn, back to you. >> especially because there's going to be tricky weather in

some parts of the country. bill will have more on that. have a great thanksgiving. now, here's a look at other stories making news "early today" in america. a group of students escaped from a burning bus just before it exploded on new york city street. witnesses say smoke and flames erupted from the vehicle soon after it was empty. firefighters quickly arrived on the scene to douse the blaze. no injuries were reported. a texas man was nearly killed when his coworker accidentally shot him in the head with a staple gun. the staple struck both halves of shawn hunter's brain, narrowly missing major blood vessels. surgeons were able to remove the staple without causing any bleeding or damage to the brain. hunter says he's anxious to get back to work to show off his survival scars. and finally, los angeles culinary students battled for bragging rights at a stuffing cookoff. using an array of ingredients, participates put their own spin

on a traditional thanksgiving dish. facing tough competition, the chef with the stuffing cupcakes took home the top prize. now for a look at your national and regional weather, here's nbc meteorologist bill karins. we were talking with jay about how many trouble spots across the country. >> a lot of people are getting ready to gear up to test their patience. airports were a mess in a lot of the areas yesterday and that's going to continue this morning. good news is by noon the storm system in the east will be kicking out of most locations. only northern new england will have to deal with it as we go throughout the afternoon hours. anyone traveling through the west coast, any flights into seattle or portland, you'll are a pretty big storm there, too. possibly delays. everywhere in the middle of the country looks fine. trouble spot is i-95 this morning, going from the deep south in georgia up the coast. it's just this morning. if you can hold off or wait until this afternoon, it will be crowded but at least you won't

be driving in the pouring rain. white is the heavy snow, all the mountainous areas, new england, vermont, maine, locked in with snow right now. heavy rain through central new england. right down i-95 this is the one last little batch of heavy rain now moving through d.c., philly and approaching areas like new york city. again, it's the first half of today. this afternoon it's going to clear out with just showers. that snowfall forecast very heavy. we expect 6 to 12 inches in a swath from burlington to bar bangor through new hampshire. down to the south we continue with showers and storms. notice they're progressing. atlanta, they're done. macon to savannah to charleston, two, three hours that wet weather will be gone from your area. this is just this morning with the travel trouble and hopefully the airports can catch up and everyone can get to their destination. now here's a look at the weather outside your window. cleveland, ohio, that's just a

i'm lynn berry and here are some of your top headlines this morning. despite assurances from egypt's military government that elections will be sped up, protesters continue to clash vie rently with police in tahrir square. the so-called second revolution has left nearly 30 people dead and more than 2,000 injured. meanwhile three american college students have been arrested for allegedly throwing fire bombs during the protests. back here in the u.s., an affluent new york suburb has been rocked by a cheating scandal that's left 20 current and former high school students under arrest. the students have been charged with hiring college kids to take the s.a.t. or a.c.t. on their behalf. a troubling new survey shows more than half of americans are struggle to make ends meet. according to analysis of government data, 45% live above poverty live but can't afford to cover basic needs. a nasa astronaut released

stunning new pictures from the international space station that show incredible scenes of nature at work. and look at this. one new zealand pilot is very lucky to be alive after his helicopter crashed while helping install a christmas tree. the chopper's blades apparently got caught up in scaffolding. amazingly, he escaped without any major injuries. unbelievable. well, now here's an early look at how wall street will kick off the day. the dow opens at 11,493 after dipping 53 points yesterday. the s&p lost 4 points. the nasdaq was down a point. taking a look at overseas trading this morning, in tokyo, the nikkei fell 33 points while in hong kong the hang seng dropped 387. in a relatively light day of preholiday trading, worries about global economic growth weighed on stocks tuesday. a scaled down estimate on third quarter economic growth here at home cast a cloud of gloom on

the street while spike in spanish debt prices feared that spain could be the next in line for a eurozone bailout. drop in chinese manufacturing levels. back on the street, netflix shares sank 5% after raising $400 million to help offset this year's massive customer exodus. campbell's soup fell 5% after reporting higher prices failed to offset dwindling sales. upside medtronic rose higher and merck pleaded guilty and agreed to pay nearly $1 billion in civil fraud charges in relation to vioxx. federal reserve announced another round of stress tests for 19 financial firms including six of america's biggest banks as the national retail federation said it was suing the fed accusing to buckle to those

brewers' ryan braun won the national league mvp, 20 first place votes. finished behind kemp in rbi. lightning looked like the best team in the league and the next night like this, gave up three goals in the first period. tyler had six. joe colburn with the first of his career. another lopsided affair in nashville like the leafs, oilers jumped over the predators in the first period with three goals. jordin eberle had two of them. oilers with a 6-2 win. enough of a blowouts, kings and blues played a close one in st. louis. a one-timer through the third, and kings responded two minutes later. mitchell got a goal, shot from the point tipped and found the back of the net. kings won it 3-2. football appears the broncos

welcome back to "early today" on this wednesday. if you're traveling, here's the breakdown. we're okay in the middle of the country, clearing it out nicely as the big storm exits through the east coast. on the eastern seaboard, first half of today is wet, stormy. if you're in northern new england, snowy. then that storm is gone by the time we go through this afternoon. by the time we get to thanksgiving day, that storm is long gone. much of the country looks rather

if you like rain, your prayers were answered overnight. >> welcome to "news 4" for wednesday, november 23rd. police say a drunk driver is responsible for injuring 20 people in a throw-vehicle crash involving a school bus in st. mary's county. a pickup truck and a car hit the bus around 9:30 last night at the intersection of buds creek road and mechanicsville road in chaptico, maryland. the bus was carrying the girls basketball team from great mills high school. it was on its way back from a game in colonial beach, virginia. 15 students, one adult and the bus driver were all taken to the hospital. two people inside the car were hospitalized. all the victims were treated and released. school officials say things could have been a lot worse. they say the bus driver's quick thinking helped keep the student safe. >> our bus driver was very heroic. he navigated the situation.

we were very thankful that the bus did not tip over and that once he -- the bus was settled, he responded to make certain every student was safe. >> police say the driver of the pickup truck, john kravats, was arrested and charged with dui. >> another developing story this morning, astronauts on poured the international space station may have to take shelter inside a soyuz space capsule because of a possible conclusion with space junk. a piece of debris is on track to pass a little too close for comfort. the object is only about four inches in diameter but because it's traveling at 17,000 miles an hour, it could cause major damage. >> today millions will be hitting the roads, the airports and train stations to head out of town for thanksgiving. more than 40 million people will be traveling according to triple a. th
