georgetown. americans celebrating thanksgiving with family and friends while some of our service members got a surprise treat. some people are choosing not to be home with family tonight. >> reporter: some people are choosing to wait outside for black friday deals. news 4 at 6:00 starts right now. >> good evening. happy thanksgiving. jim and doreen are off for the holiday. we begin with a story out of maryland. one person is dead after several pedestrians were hit by a car in a home depot parking lot. derrick ward is live from the scene with the latest there. >> reporter: good evening. as you see behind me, the vehicle involved in the accident remains on scene. this happened shortly after 1:00. one person is dead. another person is hospitalized with life threatening injuries. police say it happened about

1:15 this afternoon. the scene was in the parking lot of this home depot in hidesville. the driver and a passenger came to the home depot and found it closed. as the car was leaving the parking lot. >> as they are leaving, the car accelerates. the driver passed out, had a medical condition and he ended up veering off to the left and struck six people sitting and standing by the curb. >> reporter: they were in a grassy rising. the passenger tried to get control of the car. it came to rest. >> a couple faces of the people, blood everywhere. >> reporter: this man came upon the scene shortly after the crash. at least one person told him he was able to get out of the way. just one. >> six people, maybe six people that the car pushed all the way over there. >> reporter: the men in their

20s or 30s were possibly day laborers out for the holiday. >> they are looking for work. >> reporter: families like this man trying to find out if his brother was among the victims. >> we still don't know what his condition was or what he suffered from. >> reporter: that is part of the investigation. police have not released the identification of anyone. the driver was also take ton the hospital. we don't know his condition. the men who died, police can only say he is 38 years old. we'll have more on the story as it becomes available. we have live. we are following a breaking story in the heart of georgetown. d.c. fire crews investigating a gas leak and partial building collapse in r on wisconsin avenue. jackie bensen is live there tonight. evacuations, road closures? >> reporter: we have both.

a very unexpected event on a kauai elt thanksgiving evening. the 1400 block of wisconsin avenue northwest is completely closed. it could be awhile before things get back to normal here. >> move off the street. >> reporter: firefighters and police officers quickly push pedestrians out of harm's way as the smell of gas filled the air. just before 4:00 p.m., burglar alarms started going off on wisconsin avenue northwest in georgetown. they had been set off bay collapse inside a 19th century store front under republican novation. >> my alarm company called and said there was a breach of one of the main door alarms. >> reporter: most of the stores were closed for the thanksgiving holiday. at least one was planning a midnight madness store for black friday. >> we do midnight sale on thanksgiving, on black friday,

prison. according to egyptian state television, they were allegedly accused of being involved in throwing hydrobombs against security forces. the judge said there's not enough evidence and have been released. this is on the backdrop of continued protest in cairo. the military council which rules egypt says elections will go ahead as planned on monday despite the protest calling on the military to hand over power as quickly as possible. human rights organizations say the death toll went up to 38 people killed in the clashes. for the time being, a truce remains to be in place between the security forces and the protesters. back to you. >> that georgetown student is from jefferson city, missouri. he told the georgetown voice that delays with the paperwork could keep them in egypt until

>> reporter: a lot of folks are already lined up. take a look down there. you can see they have gone all the way around the building. that line has grown over the last hour or so. if my photographer would come over here, all these people up front have been up here since late last night. their goal is to really get deals on electronics this black friday. most of these folks want to buy the sharp 42 inch plasma tv. the biggest deal is going to begin at midnight. some stores are opening up at 9:00. right now people wait in line, play cards, read magazines and take naps in tents. for some, it's not as exciting and fun as having thanksgiving dinner with family and friends. >> it's boring, but worth it. >> reporter: why? >> great deals. >> reporter: most people watching this at home are having turkey. you are here at best buy. how does it feel to be here and what do you plan to accomplish?

nobody seriously hurt. a sharp contrast to here. i had the hat, gloves and coat and left it all in the car. >> it was beautiful. 61 degrees with plenty of sunshine. we'll get warmer tomorrow. the temperatures tomorrow could be into the mid-60s. some areas into the upper 60s. once again, looking at plenty of sun. not bad at all for thanksgiving. like i said yesterday, today, probably one of the best thanksgivings we have seen in a number of years. for the record, we hit a high temperature of 61 degrees. the low this morning was 38. we started off on the cool side early this morning. we quickly warmed up. it was fantastic. yes, there is more of this great weather to come. right now, at the airport, 54 degrees. winds out of the southwest at 3 miles per hour. temperatures are falling quickly. 45 in frederick. 48 in leesburg. 46 in winchester. 43 in culpeper. it's the theme tonight. we are falling off quickly as we are seeing plenty of clear skies

outside. not a lot of wind. we call that a good radiational cooling night. any radiation we saw today from the sunshine moves back into the atmosphere and helps to cool us down. a cool start to your friday morning. once again, we'll warm up quickly. doppler radar, nothing as far as rain is concerned. around most of the country, if you are traveling during the day tomorrow to get back to where you are going, the east coast is gorgeous. there is one storm system, actually two of them coming on shore in parts of the northwest and northern portions of california. then into the four corners region. really, most of the country is going to be looking at great weather, once again during the day tomorrow. our weather, sunshine. it's what we saw out there today on our thanksgiving. nice and mild. temperatures above average. tomorrow, i think we're going to be nice and warm with temperatures ten degrees above average with plenty of sunshine.

things get interesting over the next few days. a southwesterly wind. nice and warm saturday with more in the way of cloud cover. then here comes another storm. this storm is one of those storms that really means business for some. when i say means business, sunday for us, still nice and warm with a southwesterly wind. most of the day sunday is okay. this is through 1:00. the rain is to the west. the rain is going to move in late in the day sunday and sunday night. look at the backside. very cold air on the backside of the storm system. right now, the computer models having a very hard time telling exactly what is going to happen with this storm. it's going to be a very tough forecast. i have been talking about this storm for about a week now telling you how interesting this one is going to be for us. stay tuned. i'll have a better idea of what to expect during the day tomorrow as we make our way into sunday, monday and tuesday. clear skies this evening. a nice evening. a little on the cool side.

car slammed into a group of people standing in a home depot parking lot in maryland. it happened just after 1:00 this afternoon. the driver of the car suffered a medical emergency and stayed on the scene of the accident. there is relief and frustration for families of three american students detained in cairo since monday. the students were accused of throwing fire bombs at security forces. today, a judge ordered their release. the families say paperwork delays could keep them in egypt until sunday. this thanksgiving, president obama took time to thank men and women serving overseas. he called two service members from each branch of the military from the oval office today. gabrielle giffords served at an air force base base in tucson. one woman wasn't sure she'd be able to feed her family this

day. she's giving extra thanks for the meal on her table along with other families in need. we have the story. >> reporter: she served her country in the navy. now, she serves this family. neither of which are any small task. perhaps this is the more challenging of the two, raising four children alone. she didn't know how she would put a warm meal on the table this thanksgiving. >> probably have to share with family, friends, visit and try to get plates. >> reporter: that was until the redskins came to her rescue. >> she was very heroic at what she's doing, you know, for the country and at home, raising four kids by herself. it's awesome. it's amazing. i know she's strong. a lot of sacrifice. >> reporter: they were one of 3500 prince george's county needy families selected to receive a thanksgiving meal at

that's the current temperature. dew point only 36. no windchill to talk about. we are dealing with clear skies from philadelphia down to richmond. a few clouds through central portions of pennsylvania. they will pass us by to the north. under the clear skies, we are going cool off rapidly. the suburbs will be cooler than the city. inside the city, about 42. gaithersburg and montgomery county, 32 degrees. down around culpeper, 32 degrees. to the north and west, hagerstown and martinsburg with temperatures in the upper 20s. everybody is going to warm up nicely tomorrow into the mid-60s. tomorrow is going to be a spectacular afternoon. i think we have at least one more of those coming up during the day on saturday. high temperature saturday, about 64 degrees. high clouds saturday. that's it. sunday is the next best chance for rain. it will be late in the day.

you are happy to slouch on the couch watching football. the big story around the nfl today, will the green bay packers be thankful for remaining undefeated? putting perfection on the plan against their rivals and the detroit lions. after a scoreless first quarter, we pick it up in the second. greg jennings for the touchdown. his eighth of the year. green bay up 7-0. third quarter, things get ugly. packers in the red zone. banging the head of the packers smith into the ground. then he stomps on his arm. he was ejected from the game. this, from a guy who met with the commissioner earlier this month to talk about the flags and fines he'd been receiving. the coach having a word with him. not happy. trying to get the team on track,

but he's picked off. one of two interceptions on the day for stafford. the very next play, rogers, he finds james jones behind the defense. he's off to the races. a 65-yard touchdown. the packers go on to win, 27-15. they are 11-0 for the first time in franchise history. remaining perfect. the redskins get to enjoy their turkey at home. sunday, they travel to seattle to take on the sea hawks. century lake field is a loud place. one of the loudest in the nfl. redskining quarterback, rex grossman is going to have to deal with it. just deal with it and find a way to communicate with offense. last week, against dallas, rex's unit started to find their groove, got their groove back, i guess you could say. grossman and the gang stepped it up against the cowboys. the second quarter rushing

unveiled. the massive christmas tree is up. they extended their holiday hours as well. it will be open until 8:00 through january. as you head out to the mall to do your holiday shopping, consider this. the marketing firms could be tracking your every move by tapping into your cell phone. some are calling it an invasion of privacy. we are looking at how it works. >> reporter: holiday rush is underway. this year is different. all you have to do is look at the directories and you see signs warning shoppers they are being tracked through their cell phone. >> why would anybody care if i go to macy's then go to penny's. so, what cares? >> reporter: marketing managers are the one who is care. they want to know where shoppers like to go. this mall is one of two in the nation that are testing out this tracking system developed by a british company called path intelligence. in years past, we do a shopper intercept.

we have to ask you, would you mind answering a half hour worth of questions. >> reporter: questions like what are your favorite places to shop or eat. now, the movements of anyone carrying a cell phone can be recorded. this is how it works. when a shopper enters the parking lot, the transponders get a signal called a ping from the cell phone. they follow that ping all over the mall. some shoppers say it could be viewed as an invasion of privacy. >> i see that. it doesn't make me nervous. it's like you go with the movement of technology. you go with it. >> reporter: according to marketing they don't have that ability. >> not able to collect a demographic. i don't know if it's male or female. >> that was tony shin reporting. this is not in malls in our area. there's a way to avoid being tracked, turn off your cell phone while in the mall.
