thanksgiving day is winding down, but the lines are getting longer outside stores all over the region. happy thanksgiving, everyone. i'm aaron gil crest. the count down is on and the frenzy is starting earlier than ever before. major retailers opening at midnight to get a jump start on the holiday shopping season. shomari, we hear the police had to step in to control some of those crowds. >> reporter: the police did have to step up security here. i'm inside the best buy before

it opens at midnight. the hot item, the 42 inch sharp television for $19 9.99. the police had to put squad cars who help show their presence to the crowd. you look over here, it's now orderly. it wasn't like that 30ments ago when we were the only station here. a lot of these folks did not line up in a single file line. police had to bring them right over here and start a new line. problem? a man earlier today started a list. that list had approximately 150 people on it, best buy, police could not verify the list so it's no longer valid. >> the gentleman who made a list today does not work for best buy. the list is not valid. whoever was here, first come first serve. the store will not open until there's a single-file line. >> montgomery county police

beefed up security to keep the crowds under control less than an hour before the big opening. what are you doing here is it. >> i need a tv for my bedroom. that's why i came here but look at the line. >> reporter: wrapped around the building more there and a thousand of people are wrapped in sweaters, coats and goffs. >> we're all dressed up for the cold. >> reporter: to get a hot deal. >> sales is too good to pass up. >> reporter: what's waiting in line without a little entertainment. best buy is showing behind-the-scenes video of the making of harry potter. you come in this car right here and it's like a drive-in movie theater. what are you doing? >> waiting for best buy to open. >> reporter: how do you like watching the movie in your car like this? you just decided to come in here as opposed to being outside in the cold. >> correct. it's warm and i have front row seats. >> reporter: what about sitting at home with your relatives on thanksgiving? >> can you have dinner with your family any other time.

you'll be able to take off as many layers as you want during the day tomorrow. almost as many layers as you want. >> thank you, doug. one man is dead, five others injured after a car plowed into a group of people in a home depot parking lot. that happened this afternoon on east west highway in hyattsville, maryland. police say the driver suffered some sort of medical emergency and lost control of his lincoln town car. witnesses say the victims were day laborers looking for work on the holiday. five men remain hospitalized. the driver is also being treated. >> parts of georgetown back open after a gas crews spent people scrambling today. investigators believe it started the gas like. metro busses had to be rerouted. one star owner planning to open at midnight for black friday hopes that leak doesn't chang

his plans. >> my store major. we do midnight sale on thanksgiving on black friday basically to give everybody a little bit of an edge, starting at 12:00 midnight so they don't have to be bothered with going to walmart or best buy. >> again, the gas has been shut off to the building affected and wisconsin avenue is back open at this hour. nobody was hurt in the collapse. police are still trying to figure out why it happened. >> shoppers in montgomery county on edge after a 75-year-old man was abducted from a parking lot. this happened outside the giant grocery store on university boulevard in wheaton yesterday. police say the man was leaving the store when the suspect walked up to him with a box cutter and forced him into his car. he drove to atms, forcing the man to withdraw crash. the victim talked to the suspect and got him to let him go unharmed. >> here at home and abroad it's

been a day of celebration and gratitude. president obama started the morning by calling troops overseas to thank them for their service and then sent a taped message to the nation saying the first family would spend the day eating great food, watching football and reflecting on how lucky they are. in iraq some 20,000 troops scattered across eight bases there, earlier this year president obama announced all must be out of iraq by the end of the year. troops in afghanistan have several more years before they may be able to say the same thing. >> and congresswoman gabrielle giffords did her part to thank the troops today. it was her first consistent event since being shot in the head back in january. troops called her an inspiration to the community, the base and the nation. >> and in the district, dozens gathered on mcpherson square. they spent the holiday serving turkey and standing in

solidarity against corporate greed. >> as the saying goes, there's no place like home for the holidays and they also say home is where the heart is. their hearts are into what they're doing so this thanksgiving home is a tent city here in mcpherson square. >> if you look around at anybody here, this is one family. >> reporter: those among the occupiers that walked to washington, he started in philly, following his heart. the scenes here may not be normal rockwell depictions of a family gathering but to these folks it's just as american. >> we come together we shall got a struggle we trying to go through and this is why you let the world know that if you unite together, non-violently and educationally, you can accomplish anything. >> reporter: there were those who took it upon themselves to see that there was warm food and well wishes, not only for those who are part of the occupation but for those who are homeless and now share the parks with the occupation. israel and members of her family are here to help. >> for goodness. it's thanksgiving. everybody's cooking for their

family, why not for those who doesn't have no family. >> reporter: meanwhile at freedom plaza busy kitchens and cooks made it feel a lot like a holiday. but here, too, while the convictions of the protesters temper the spirits of the observances, they spent the day with their extended family. >> we are trying to help everybody with thanksgiving day, everything for everybody, really, really good people. >> reporter: and they plan to observe black friday here, though certainly not in the traditional sense. and what would they be most thankful for? what would they like to found under their tree? >> we don't want our politicians beholding to anyone except the american people. >> next at 11:00, a pilot walks away from a crash with just a few bumps and bruises. what he credits with saving his life. >> the family of a georgetown university student in egypt has extra reason to be thankful this thanksgiving. and saved by strangers. hear from

christmas tree on the waterfront yesterday when the blades got caught in some kabuls. this is unbelievable stuff. the chopper plummeted instantly. you saw it. he said the whole thing felt like a dream. his seat belt saved his life. >> that's your belt which is attached to the flower of the aircraft, okay? and that there, i must have just slid around inside it, thrown me out, dragged me back in. you know, if i was wasn't wearing that, it would have been all over. >> he's been flying helicopters for 20 years and hopes to be back in the air soon. >> three american students will soon be released from custody in egypt. derek sweeney and two others are in a police holding cell. authorities believe it is the safest place for them to be right now. the students were arrested in cairo on monday for throwing a molotov cocktail during protest. a judge ordered their release because he said there wasn't enough evidence. sweeney's mother said she was

kress re rescuing her from a burning car. we have more on the reaction from one of those good samaritans. >> we could feel the heat coming from the car. >> reporter: there is no law that required andre to approach this burning car this morning. he and another passing motorist of lothian, maryland both witnessed the three-car crash and both noticed people getting out of only it would have the cars. they ran to the third. >> she said that her arm and her leg were broken. we were like, miss, we've got to get you out of this car because the car's on fire. >> reporter: what the two men did then cannot be legislated. it's called human decency. >> i don't have any training or anything but just, you know, if it was my family, i'd want someone to do the same thing with my family, especially on today, thanksgiving. >> reporter: after rescue crews

some snow up there towards maine. this was yesterday clanning up after the same storm that brought us all the rain, moved up the coast and brought parts of maine upwards of ten inches of snow. we're looking forward to a white christmas. up there they had a white thanksgiving. it not the first time either they get that fairly often up there in portions of maine. for our weather today we saw fantastic weather with the high temperature today into the 60s. we're at 61 degrees. om going to be right back by the way. that was the high temperature today with a low this morning that was in the upper 30s in most locations. it was fairly chilly early to start but once the sun came out, really helped to warm up very, very nicely. yes, it was just fantastic today and there is more of that fantastic weather to come. 47 degrees out there right now, wind out of the south at about 5 miles per hour. around the region, this is very interesting. right now manassas at 34, but fredericks and hagerstown are a

little bit warmer here. i think this has to do with an elevation thing because look at martinsburg, around 48 degrees and lower elevations into the valleys here were much colder, 47 degrees right now at the airport and in annapolis. clear skies will allow everyone to cool do you eventually. we do have a few high clouds streaming in. a cool start to tomorrow morning and here comes the warm air with plenty of sunshine. temperatures are going to skyrocket to about 10 degrees above average, puts us into the mid 60s. more of the same on saturday. we get a nice southwest early flow. a few more clouds out there but i city think sale is looking very, very good. here comes the problem. it's on sunday. look at sunday with this frontal boundary. this storm is going to do one of two things, a, stall out to the south of us and give us cooler temperatures but not too cold or, b, it's going to fly right

on by and open the air into arctic airne next week. clear skies, chilly in the suburbs. the temperatures will warm up rapidly. everybody will get into the low 60s under that sunshine, just beautiful tomorrow. winds shifting to the southwest at about 10 to 15 miles per hour. here's the next four days. as i monientioned, the first th, hey, i got that covered for you. and then it gets complicated. monday, tuesday, wednesday, thursday temperatures at least 50 or above. that's the current thinking. but i'm telling you what, tomorrow you want to tune in. i'm going to have a much better idea of what's going to happen coming up early next week. if you have plans on monday or tuesday, wait until tomorrow to see the forecast. >> but no snow? >> not in the immediate area. to the west could see some. >> coming up in sports, the

har-bowl took place where jim harbaugh and john harbaugh became the first brothers to ever face each other in the nfl as head coaches. we had a tie game in the fourth quarter. flacco with an 8-yard score. that puts the ravens up 13-6. they go on to win 16-6 and improve to 8-3. they unundefeated, 6-0, at m & t stadium. dallas cowboys kicker dan bailey has struck given. it was dez bryant pumped up before the game. tony and his dolphins getting ready to take on the cowboys. third quarter, that was brandon marshall catching a 35-yard touchdown catch. terence newman all over him. he manages to make the grab.

same score early in the fourth, third and three. tony romo hooks up with whitten. watch as he goes out of bounds, takes out a dallas cowboy cheerleader. she's a gamer. she gets back up, i'm okay, let's huddle, okay, girls back in formation. scrambles out of the pocket and finds robinson in the end zone, his second touchdown of the game and his seventh in the last five games. what a factor he has been for dallas. the cowboys up 17-16. but after a shane graham field goal puts dallas done by 2, the cowboys have one more chance. it's dan bailey with three seconds. he nails his 26th consecutive field goal. for the second week in a row bail live boots the game winner and the cowboys survive, winning 20-19. dallas has now won four straight. >> now to high school football.

dunbar and coolidge faced in the 42nd annual turkey bowl this afternoon. this year a much different look than when the game was first played back in 1969. natalie randolph has gained national attention as one of the few female coaches in the country. but what her colts have enough to walk away with the d.c. high school championship? coach randolph and coolidge would have their hands full against a tough dunbar team today. in the third quarter crimson tide up 21-13. lamel matthews finds his brother in the end zone for a 23-yard touchdown. dunbar up 14. how about a little lebron celebration. got to love that. later in the quarter, more dunbar. gets the handoff, cuts to the outside and takes it in from 12 yards out, over 100 yards on the ground today. and dunbar wins 33-21. crimson tide are your 2011 turkey bowl champs.

the top dog was crowned at the national dog show in philadelphia today. the winner, a choir fox terrier named ira. the judge said this year's field was extremely strong. the competition included a doug from frederick county, maryland, surfer, a skipper ki. he finished second but already has three best in show credits so share the wealth a little bit there. >> it really was a fantastic array today of dogs as i watched all of that. >> that's our broadcast tonight.
