disappearance of a maryland woman could soon walk out of jail. liars for gary giordano said a judge in aruba has denied a request by prosecutors to keep him behind bars for another 30 days. he's been in jail since early august for the disappearance of a frederick native robyn gardner. he claims gardner was pulled out to sea while they were snorkel. police re-created giordano's story and claim it doesn't add up, however, they've yet to charge him with a crime. today's decision means giordano could walk free as early as tuesday, however, prosecutors are vowing to appeal that ruling and they've asked for an emergency hearing. ♪ ready, set, shop! black friday is officially here. this is the scene at macy's in tyson's corner at midnight. shoppers rushed through the store to snatch up the best deals and some in our area were shopping even earlier than that, hitting stores that opened at

10:00 p.m. last night. so, with stores opening earlier than ever before, what effect does that have on the shoppers? news4's megan mcgrath is live at the mall in leesburg, is it a madhouse? >> reporter: because of the change in hours for a lot of the retailers, it sort of changed the dynamic a little bit. we had a big rush at midnight when a lot of the stores opened up and things sort of leveled off. we're here at the premium outlets and look at the coach store, they've had a line out front pretty much all day long and very, very busy here, a lot of folks taking advantage of these sales. we're seeing sales signs all over the place. all kinds of different deals, each retailer offering a different special, but everybody we've seen, they're walking around with a lot of bags, so i think they're doing some serious shopping. black friday. and shoppers are out looking for deals. and in most cases, they're finding them. >> oh, i got some great stuff. i got $10 jeans at lacoste, that was my best buy.

i was pretty excited about that. >> we probably got $250 of stuff and it costs us, like, $109 dollars. >> reporter: how about half off all boots? this tight economy retaers are doing what they can to entice shoppers to spend. >> each store is doing things differently. a couple of the stores did have door buster deals. veer b vera bradley was giving away totes. >> reporter: the outlets in leesburg have opened at midnight for years, but for best buy the 12:00 a.m. open is new and it changed the shopping dynamic. 5:30 in the morning last year and this place was mobbed. this year, no line at the checkout. the customers weren't waiting. the clerks were. that's because by dawn, the big crowds had come and gone making for an unexpectedly laid-back shopping experience. >> like, we came during the week

los angeles after a case of shoppers rage. at least 20 people had to be treated by paramedics after a woman doused a crowd of shoppers with pepper spray inside a walmart. as they all rushed toward a video game display. the store was briefly evacuated. one shopper who was sprayed says that this is her first and last black friday. >> i won't be coming back. i don't want to do this anymore. it wasn't worth it. it's not worth the deals, like, i've been sitting behind walmart for an hour because i don't feel good. >> the woman who sprayed the crowd was able to get away in the chaos that followed. police hope to identify her using the security camera video. robberies are a problem this time of year, too, and that was highlighted during the black friday shopping frenzy. in two cases people were robbed at gunpoint in parking lots early this morning. in myrtle beach, the suspects in a walmart parking lot ran away when the victim produced a gun. in san leandro, california, a shopper was shot during another

parking lot robbery. but police say the victim's family was able to detain that suspect until police got there. and turning to the weather now, very sunny start to the day. tom, a great day to be outside, if you've got the day off, huh? >> a great way to exercise off some of the stuffing from thanksgiving and this morning we started off very cold. it was below freezing in most locations but now with that bright sun, we have warmed up. fredericksburg now up to 57. they may hit 70 there later today. charlottesville is up to 64. closer to washington, there's a cool breeze off the chilly waters of the potomac, so reagan national is at 52. but elsewhere, mid and upper 50s throughout most of the region, and it will continue to climb this afternoon under this sunny blue sky. we've got a clear sky from southern new england all the way down to florida. and from washington all the way into the midwest. no travel problems at all. i'll show you the rest of the look across the nation coming up in a few minutes. sunny and mild for us through the rest of the afternoon with a

mall, westville montgomery mall, off of democracy, not seeing any problems there as you make your way inside. shop, shop, shop, barbara, back to you. >> it looks like a good one to go to. the parking lots have spaces left. thank you. an suv crashed into a firehouse overnight, it happened around 4:00 this morning in the 1600 block of "u" street, engine company number nine, luckily no one was hurt and there was only minor structural damage to the building. the driver now faces dui charges. pla police in maryland are trying to figure out why a driver lost control causing a deadly pedestrian accident. one person was killed and five others hurt in the home depot in the parking lot there. police say the car was leaving the store yesterday afternoon when the driver apparently lost consciousness and swerved into a crowd of day laborers standing in a median. a 41-year-old died. at this time police do not know the driver's condition or the conditions of the other

pedestrians. d.c. police are investigating a stabbing in the 1700 block of columbia road in adams morgan. they say a man in his 20s was found stabbed in the lower back. he's in serious condition at a local hospital right now. and right now police don't have any further information on the suspect or motive in the attack. the time right now is 8 minutes after 11:00, and coming up, when the three american students being held in egypt will be released. plus, the special delivery being made to the white house at this hour. we'll show you. stay w

right now, the white house christmas tree is arriving. we're looking at a live picture of 1600 pennsylvania avenue right now. beau, there he is in the shot, the first lady and their two daughters. they're receiving a 19-foo 19-foot balsam fir. they are expected to reveal the theme at the white house next week. there it is, the white house christmas tree just arriving just moments ago. three american students arrested in egypt will soon be on their way back to the states. georgetown university student derrick sweeney on the right and two others were arrested earlier this week for allegedly throwing molotov cocktails during egypt's riots. a judge ordered their release because there wasn't enough evidence. sweeney's mother was ecstatic when she received the news that her son was coming home.

>> and he confirmed that the three boys were being released, that they were very, very fortunate, that we are this is something we should truly celebrate this thanksgiving and, believe me, we are. >> family members say they believe the students will head home on sunday. they were originally supposed to go home yesterday, but there were delays in filing the paperwork. an incident on board a plane from charlotte to washington delayed travelers for hours last night. a us airways plane was delayed after authorities detained foreign students on board the plane and questioned them for hours. the plane sat on the tarmac in charlotte for almost five hours during this questioning. eventually the students were allowed to continue with the rest of the passengers. we talked with one of them when they arrived at reagan. >> the police with the bomb squad rushed in and they told us that we were not arrested, or we didn't do anything, but they're going to call our names. they didn't call -- they didn't -- they called us -- they

the low to mid-50s, but the upper 50s to near 60s now on the eastern shore, all thanks to this bright sun and a blue sky, high pressure is in place from new england all of the way down to florida and from washington into the midwest, no travel problems for folks that are arriving from their thanksgiving travels or leaving. well, let's go forward throughout the rest of the day. we will have lots of sunshine, and then overnight tonight we'll continue to stay clear. it will get chilly tonight. then saturday during the day, we'll have lots of sun in the morning and perhaps just a few clouds drifting through during the afternoon hours. just a few high clouds coming over the region. otherwise quite a bit of sun. as we get into the evening hours, we'll be partly cloudy to mostly clear saturday night. and then on sunday a front approaching from the midwest is going to begin to bring some clouds in, but we ought to have some sun sunday morning, but right now it looks like any rain chance will be after sunset on sunday, sunday night and perhaps as we get back to work and school on monday. so, for the rest of this friday

right now thousands of people are taking care of their holiday shopping on this black friday as it's called. this was the scene at the macy's in tyson's corner where bargain hunters stormed the doors at the stroke of midnight. the crowds have died down a little bit now, but you can expect more mall mayhem throughout this day. montgomery mall is packed today. shoppers have been there since midnight. we've been there through much of the morning and joins us now with a look inside. >> reporter: the national retail federation predicts 152 million people will hit stores this weekend, that's 10% higher than last year. most of them will buy shoes and clothes. sorry, early birds, stores across the land are catering to the night owls this year. opening at 9:00 p.m., 10:00 p.m. or midnight. they've been stocking shelves for weeks, prepping for one very lucrative night and day. >> it's an exciting time for us and it's a kickoff for the holiday and that's what we're about right now.

a maryland family is safe this morning thanks to the quick work of firefighters. a fire broke out in the family's home around 4:00 this morning on the 14000 look of pleasant view drive. the father was able to escape but the mother and three young girls were trapped in the home. firefighters were able to get them all out, though, quickly. they were treated for smoke inhalation, but are expected to be okay. firefighters say the fire started on the first floor but they haven't determined the cause yet. an amazing rescue out in prince george's county. two men pulled a woman out of a burning car after an accident. it happened yesterday morning off of watkins park drive in upper marlborough, andre matlock and another man saw a three-car accident but noticed a woman was still inside one of the cars. the woman had suffered a broken arm and leg, so the men pulled her to safety and stayed with her until emergency crews arrived. matlock's family say he's a hero. >> what i told them what had

>> dish soap is interesting because we use this for poison ivy. if you have poison ivy, you can rub dish soap with water right on your hand, on whatever part of your body that has the poison ivy and it helps to alleviate the pain. there's a homeopathic remedy called rustox, but if you are at home and you have poison ivy, try dish soap on your hand with a little bit of water. >> if you think you have gotten into it, go for it early. >> if it's a severe case, you want to use that, that will help, but you want to try to do something else as well. >> let's move on to cherry juice. >> yeah. but it has to be tart cherry juice, because the sweetened cherry juice will not work as effectively. but it's great for gout, when you're having a gout attack, it's great to use tart cherry juice. it needs to be tart and not the sweetened kind, not the one from concentrate because it has too much sugar. >> baby shampoo, what do we use it for?

>> dermatologists and open thatthologi ophthalmologists use it for red and irritated eyes and stinging and burning and put a little bit of baby shampoo with some water on a q-tip and rub it on the inside of your eyelid very lightly and it will help to alleviate the pain. >> i bet most people probably think it would sting because they make it so it wouldn't sting. >> ie, baby shampoo. >> will it get the red out? >> it will get the red out. >> what about menthol rub? mothers always had that. >> vicks vapor rub that they recommend, you can get thigh mo thymol from the drugstore or the vicks vapor rub for fungus and you put it on your toe. you don't want to use it longer than four months or six months because it's if not going away, you need to do something else

about it. but it's better than the heavy drugs that they use which you always have to get blood test results to make sure your liver is functioning correctly. go with something with thymol than the heavy drugs. and use it during the cold season. >> witch hazel. not many people know what that's for. >> it's great for hemorrhoids. if you put it on a cotton ball and put it on the hemorrhoid, i can relieve the pain. there's also a homeopathic ointment and suppository for hemorrhoids that has the active ingredient of witch hazel. it's been used for years for the purpose of hemorrhoids. >> lots of people have it around and it used to be in our medicine cabinet. how about ginger? >> of course, ginger is great for cooking but it's also great for nausea and vomiting, for gastric distress and i usually tell patients to put half a teaspoon of fresh grated ginger in a cup of hot water and sip on that several times a day, and it's really, really excellent

for nausea and for vomiting. >> what about plain tap water? you have a cup of water. >> plain tap water interestingly enough there was a study done in japan the people that gargled three or four times a day with plain tap water would, in fact, reduce the number of upper respiratory illnesses. >> just plain water? >> nothing in it, they think it's because of the chlorine or the other chemicals with which the water is treated that helps to reduce the virus load in the throat. >> is there a secret use for milk of magnesia? >> it's used for the little tiny canker sores that you get on your tongue that are just irritating you, because milk of magnesia, magnesia aspect of it works as an anti-histamine or to relieve the pain. another great herbal remedy is licorice root used for the same thing for cankers sores externally and internally. >> i'm sure there's lots of things you haven't told us about. we're running out of time. >> we'll have to come back and finish. >> i would love to come back. >> the magic ways to cure things

cleanup. council members feel that number could be drastically reduced by enacting the bag tax. the county requires the maryland general assembly's permission to implement such a tax. d.c. has had a five cent tax since 2010, you may remember, and montgomery county will begin charging five cents a bag on january the 1st. stocks are higher this morning after the holiday break, let's check in with cnbc's hampton pearson, he joins us live with more on that and the rest of the day's business headlines. hey, hampton. >> it's a short trading day, as a matter of fact, for u.s. markets, the closing bell will ring at 1:00 eastern time. the dow is up 38 points, the nasdaq down over a point. the s&p up five. more worries, again, about europe's debt crisis. a debt auction in italy today saw that country forced to pay 7.8% to borrow money for two years to finance a portion of its massive debt. italy is europe's third largest economy and the higher borrowing costs are the sign that

investors are more reluctant to invest in european debt. but the u.s. banks are leading the way in keeping the markets in positive territory, but for the week the dow is down 3.7%. if that holds, it would be the worst trading week since late september. one other item impacting markets, at&t is budgeting to pay $4 billion in break-up fees if its attempted $39 billion proposed takeover of t-mobile from deutsch telekom if that falls apart. prospects of winning approval from government regulators are getting more difficult. the national retail federation estimating 152 million people will go shopping over the weekend. a 10% increase over last year. hopefully it will boost the economy. and, barbara, i've been watching your coverage and i think about half of those folks are out at the leesburg outlet. >> it sounds like it. >> are you going to get out there this weekend? >> we'll do what we can. i like to avoid crowds, but we'll do what we can. >> have a great weekend.

>> likewise. in this week's "wednesday child" for 25 years the family division of the d.c. superior court has been holding a wonderful event that they call adoption day in court. i was honored, again, to be there to help out. >> welcome to the 25th annual adoption day in court. >> reporter: there was welcome from the judges of the family court, and others who deal in the district's adoptions. >> i'm honored to be here on behalf of the freddie mac foundation. ♪ >> reporter: and there was lots of family friendly entertainment, too. it's the kind of event the judge envisioned when he held the first adoption day in court 25 years ago. he had heard that california was doing it. and he called a judge out there to find out how it worked. >> she told me that it is a fun, happy, festive, wonderful day, they had balloons. indeed, they even had clowns and jugglers in the court.

comes from half a world away. 40 beagles rescued from a research lab in spain now safely in los angeles headed for a foster home and a new life. >> these dogs have sort of served people their whole lives, you know, they've been used and abused for animal testing. and, you know, now they get to be free. and we get to give them a life. >> reporter: volunteers say these beagles and the dogs rescued before them have never really had a chance to live. >> and we are headed somewhere where we can run free for a minute. >> reporter: the rescued beagles were more project than pet. the dogs spent their lives caged in a science lab. some have never seen the sun much less a park. >> opening the door for what's about to be their first steps ever on the grass or outside, outside a cage ever their entire lives. very exciting. can i start? >> let's do it. >> reporter: but that first fearful step is never an easy one. >> come on, big boy. yeah.
