some taxi drivers in the city say they're scared for their safety after a series of crimes in the district. i'm jim vance. doreen is off tonight. there have been a dozen robberies and carjackings involving cab drivers this month alone. the police are warning the public and drivers to stay alert. shomari stone has more on this. >> reporter: tonight we talked to a lot of cab drivers an they didn't know about this. they have one of the most dangerous jobs in the nation. they take a risk every time someone gets in the cab. this man worries about his

safety in his cab. crooks have robbed 11 cab drivers over the past two months nine this month alone. >> i have a family and two kids. i'm very concerned about it. >> reporter: he keeps a photo of his six and two-year-old an added reminder to be safe on the streets. >> i try to be nice, talk to them, try to use my judgment. but to honest with you, taking a risk. they just taking a risk. anything could happen. >> reporter: police say some of the suspect are armed, hail cabs from metro stations and carjacked can cabbies in three cases. >> we have an obligation to get information out there since there is something going on with this number of robberies. >> reporter: if you see this call tax 911 light flashing on top of the cabs like this one, call 911 for help. >> i will be happy if they just reported to the police.

>> be aware as a driver and you have to make your own personal decisions on your safety. >> reporter: while police search for the robbers this driver will rely on faith to protect him. >> thank goode i have been in the business five years. nothing happen so far. >> reporter: investigators urge anyone with information to call the metropolitan police department. i'm shomari stone. back to you. a man was killed after a standoff with a prince george's county police today outside the suspect's home in the 21,000 block in maryland. the man called 911 and threat tonight kill himself. when the police arrived the man came outside with a gun and fired off a round went back in the house, grabbed two guns and started shooting again. the police shot the man. his name has not been released. three american students in

jail in cairo are on their way back home now. they were released 250d. derrick sweeney will arrive home in st. louis, missouri tomorrow night. he and two other students were arrested on sunday accused of throwing fire bombs at security forces. a judge said there was not enough evidence to bring charges. news of the release comes as 100,000 people packed tahir square again today. they are protesting the military's decision to appoint a new prime minister. that prime minister was an important player in the ousted regime of hosni mubarack. there is growing concern about whether the military will hand over power once the new leaders are elected. a significant development tonight in the case of robyn gardner. she's the woman from maryland who is presumed dead in aruba. the suspect may be getting out

of jail very soon. jackie bensen here with more on this. >> reporter: this morning's ruling took the prosecution by surprise. after more than 100 days in police custody 50-year-old gary giordano may be coming home from what began as a long weekend in aruba by two people who met on an adult dating website. >> there is no reason for him to be detained even in further investigation. the judge agreed with that and decided that she will not grant the prosecution another extension which means that mr. giordano will have to be released coming tuesday at 8:00 in the evening. >> are giordano has been jailed in aruba in connection with the disappearance and presumed death of robyn gardner. she lived in bethesda. giordano claimed she was swept away while they were snorkeling.

intense pressure is on prosecutors. but searches for her body turned up nothing. >> once released he can go wherever he wants just like any free person like you and i. >> the solicitor general tells news4 he will file an emergency appeal for a 30-day extension of his detention. reached by phone he sounded less than confident he will be able to charge giordano with murder before then. >> charging you can only do one time. if you take the case to court and the judge finds not enough material and acquit then it is curtains. you cannot go on any more. >> the question is what awaits giordano in the u.s. he is a suspect in gardner's disappearance and could be forced to return to the island if charges are filed. i spoke to a woman who is a

spokesperson for gardner's family. she described them as distraught by the news. back to you. >> thanks, jackie. eight students from the united arab emirates are voicing concerns after being taken off a flight bound for washington and questioned for hours last night. the u.s. airways flight was headed from charlotte to national airport. a concerned passenger told the pilot she thought the students were going to hijack the plane. the police detained the student and held them for questioning. the flight took off and the students got back on board. the plane landed five hours late. the students said they were concerned about america's perception of muslims. >> we are not blaming the police. they were good men. they were doing their jobs. but the people -- the way they think about when they see a middle even guy on an airplane.

breaking news tonight. a man was killed in a carjacking. it happened in the 9400 block of adelephi road. the victim was suffering a gunshot wound. three men stole the car and wrecked the vehicle and ran away. the pennsylvania governor and the penn state sex abuse scandal is under scrutiny tonight. he was the attorney general in the grand jury investigation against jerry sandusky three years ago. he was also on the penn state board of trustees. but board members say he never mentioned the case during the meetings. corbett maintains he was not supposed to talk about it. but the lawyers say he could have asked the university to look at sandusky based on what he knew. sandusky is accused of sexually

safety concerns tonight for general motors after some car batteries in the chevy volts caught fire. the federal officials have launched an investigation into the battery used in the electric car. the national highway traffic safety administration performed crash tests on three chevy volts last week. and two out of the three

batteries caught fire or started smoking after the test. gm says that federal officials incorrectly stored the batteries. there have been no reports of similar incidents from owners. amid all the frenzy on this black friday there were a few confrontations that went beyond the usual pushing and shoving. police had their hands full all over the country today. >> reporter: on youtube today pictures of the quest for door busters turning dangerous. in porter california a woman pepper sprayed fellow shoppers so she could get an xbox. >> the lady started spraying people. >> reporter: 20 people were injured and police spent the day looking for the suspect. in northern california one man is in critical condition after a shooting an apparent attempted robbery of his bargains. in south carolina one woman was

hospitalized after an attempted robbery and shooting. >> we heard gunshots. >> reporter: in new york who women were taken away by ambulance. >> they cut the thing and there is 200 people on top of my mom. >> reporter: wal-mart said overall it has been a safe event at the thousands of wal-mart stores. but added they are always looking at how to do things better. in cities across the u.s. retailers and police were found facing new security challenges. pepper spray was used in north carolina by store security trying to sub due frenzied shoppers. in florence, alabama a stun gun was used on a customer. in arizona questions about excessive force on an elderly man suspected of shoplifting. leaving many to wonder if the battle for bargains is worth the cost.

tomorrow but the sun will still be able to penetrate the clouds. starting off on a cool note but here comes the sun through the clouds. temperatures tomorrow similar to where they were today. and then we watch on sunday. sunday we have it dry right now. that's the good news. the weekend is dry. but watch this front. it will make its way to the area but stalls around washington. that will create a chance for shower activity to the south of the front. 30% chance on monday. we're going to wait for this storm. will the be a big storm and it will make its way to the east eventually. i think will the be tuesday for the best chance for rain. but look at the cold air behind it bringing snow back into arkansas and some of the snow could make it closer to the appalachians. no snow for washington but maybe for the ski resorts to west. high clouds. chilly in the suburbs tomorrow. a nice start, 31 to 43 degrees.
