hunter's first game is tomorrow night under the st. louis blues. president obama hosted leaders from the european union today at the white house. he warned europe's debt crisis could cost american jobs. steve handelsman reports. >> reporter: concern that europe's debt crisis could drag down the american economy, president obama urged the president's of the european council and european commission to take bold action now. >> europe is having difficulties, then it's much more difficult for us to create good jobs here at home. we send so many products and services to europe. it's such an important trading partner for us. >> reporter: it's an economic cancer spreading from greece facing default to portugal, ireland and italy. france and germany sure to feel the effects said a report out today. >> it's rapidly deteriorating.

following the record-breaking shopping weekend. nasdaq up 85. s&p closing 33 points higher. >> congressman barney frank is retiring at the end of his term. he announced he doesn't plan to seek re-election. he was amajor architect of the sweeping banking reform passed last year. he remains the ranking congressman on that committee. he's 71 years old and was one of the first lawmakers to announce he's gay. the official holiday season hit capitol hill. the tree arrived in d.c. this morning from california national forest. it will be erected on the west lawn of the capital building with 10,000 l.e.d. lights and 2,000 handmade ornaments.

giant parking lot, the third at the target lot. tracee wilkins reports the last attack was particularly violent. >> reporter: yesterday's 77-year-old victim was leaving target and getting into his vehicle when he was approached by a suspect armed with a box cutter. he was forced into the passenger seat and drove him to atms. the victim was discovered cut and bruised in the passenger's seat of the vehicle in east west highway in hyattsville. the victim was treated for serious, but nonlife threatening injuries. this is video of the second victim dropped off a a bp in northwest on saturday. his was one of three armed abductions. they all involve elderly men. today, we talked with folks who live and work in the area and

what do you name a giant pacific octopus? anything he wants. that's what the folks over at the smithsonian national zoo are trying to figure out for this octopus they have. on november 4th, their beloved octopus died. now there's a new young creature there. the new one is a year and a half old. it's too early to determine the sex. they are teaming up with "the washington post" for the contest.

drop much after midnight, 58 to 59 degrees to start things out. rain and on the wet side tomorrow morning. light showers for tomorrow morning. mild conditions. it's during the afternoon we'll see the heavier rain. the entire area dry. rain around morganton and elkins, west virginia. then there's the big part of the system, right there. area of low pressure. lots of rain ahead of it with a cold front toward london, kentucky and snow around paducah, kentucky. western tennessee, east of memphis, big flakes of snow coming down. i have been reading the tweets coming from the area they are amazed at how fast it's coming down and how big the flakes are. there's the winter storm watch. they get one to two inches of snow throughout the area. areas of western tennessee, northern alabama. maybe northern georgia could get

welcome back at 4:30, i'm jim handly. >> i'm wendy rieger sitting in for pat lawson muse. the holiday shopping frenzy is in gear today. online retailers offering deep discounts for this one day. more people are using their smartphones and tablets to get in on the online shopping action. police are looking for the suspect behind three carjackings at the westfield wheaten shopping center. all the victims were older shoppers. the latest happened yesterday afternoon, broad daylight when a man with a box cutter forced a 77-year-old man into his car, told him to drive to an atm to

get cash. the caps made a big change at the top. coach boudreaux fired this morning. dale hunter will replace him. his first game will be tomorrow night. on wall street, stocks made a big gain today following the robust start to the holiday season. the dow picked up 291 points. nasdaq shot up 85 and s&p 500 ended 33 points higher. a child molestation case involving a former assistant coach for the syracuse university basketball team is growing. >> bernie fine was fired after a third person stepped forward to say he was sexually abused. county officials say the u.s. attorney's office and secret service are heading this investigation. jay gray has the latest. >> reporter: on sunday, long time assistant basketball coach bernie fine was fired after a

third victim came forward acc e accusing him of sexual abuse. he had already been placed on administrative leave following allegations from two stepbrothers. the head coach called the allegations disturbing and deeply troubling. the brothers claim they were sexually abused by fine more than 20 years ago. >> he started trying to touch me and things like that. you know, honestly i don't remember if i thought that was what was supposed to happen. i know i cringed up and didn't want it to happen. >> reporter: two days after the fbi searched fine's home they aired a 2002 phone call which fine's wife acknowledges the abuse. >> i know everything that went on with him. maybe he's not aware of it but

he has issues. >> davis claims he recorded the call for fear his allegations against fine would not be believed. now a third victim, a 23-year-old claims he was molested by him in pittsburgh in 2002. >> i have a feeling there could be many other victims in this case as well. if somebody didn't back up bobby davis and his story, it could continue. >> he faces sexual assault charges in maine involving a 13-year-old boy. he's pleaded not guilty to those charges. coach fine called all the allegations against him false. in a case strikingly similar to the scandal and cover up unfolding at penn state, there are questions here at syracuse about what university officials knew and when. >> it's a penn state world. there's an element to what happens in vegas stays in vegas.

you can see how powerful they are. >> facing a fall out. scandals and the programs that built their prominence. >> we have a new development tonight regarding the tape recorded conversation. a nephew for bernie fine's wife says she'll make a statement tomorrow challenging the implications that she knew about the alleged sex abuse. the tape has been tampered with. a third grader in cleveland heights, ohio was taken away from his family, put in foster care because he's o piece. he's 8 years old and weighs more than 200 pounds. he's at risk for diabetes and hypertension. they did work with the mother for a year before asking the court to give them custody of the boy on the grounds of medical neglect. a lawyer for the mother says he's active, on the school's honor roll and his health is not a danger.

15% of americans now rely on food stamps. every month, in a lot of walmart stores, families are waiting until 12:01 to shop. it's changed the way walmart does business. kate snow has the story. >> reporter: becca is nearly out of food. >> there's no milk. >> reporter: and she's out of money to buy more. >> just water, bacon grease for the dog's food. a little bit of apple juice. two kinds of cheese and tortillas. there you go. >> reporter: her, her husband and 2-year-old son will have to hold on for six more days until the first of the month. it's when they get the cash to go food shopping. it's the same story for james and jessica. they live in the same idaho town. they are also out of food and waiting for the moment they learn there's money in their account to feed themselves and

the children in their blended family. >> we are calling the quest card line to see what our balance is. >> reporter: finally, they get word. >> your balance is $691.00. >> a great big haa. >> reporter: it's 12:01 a.m. now they can go shopping. the money they have been waiting for isn't from a paycheck. it's a month worth of government assistance from the food stamp program called snap. the number of people who rely on food stamps has gone up 37% to 46 million. so many people are shopping the instant they get their assistance. it's changed the way walmart does business. >> a few years back, we started seeing customers were literally, sometimes at midnight, were

toward st. louis and memphis, tennessee, cold air here. it's where the area of low pressure is. a lot of moisture coming up from the south. accumulating snowfall for the south. it's interesting to see. doug will have video coming up during the 11:00 p.m. newscast of some of the images down south where the snow is accumulating quickly. 66 here. oddly mild. temperatures tomorrow, again in the 60s. it will feel like it does now, balmy. the system is advancing. for the good night wake up forecast, we are dry during the overnight. 60 by 11:00 p.m. wet for tomorrow morning and for the afternoon rush tomorrow, too. 59 to 58 degrees. the high tomorrow is going to be reached early around noontime to 1:00. the heavier rain moves in and temperatures fall off. 6:30 in the morning, light showers around the area.

by the time we get to noon, mercury starts to drop. mid-60s tomorrow then falling off. wednesday, breezy. we'll get sunshine back for areas east. off to the west, accumulating snowfall for the mountains of western maryland and western virginia. one to two inches of snow. the temperatures tomorrow in the low 60s across the area. yes, you are going to need your umbrella and rain gear to stay prepared. then the 50s for wednesday, thursday and friday. sunshine comes back at the end of the week thursday and friday. if you are looking ahead to the weekend, saturday and sunday, 48 to 51 degrees. a little bit of spike in the temperatures early part of next week. it is looking wet on monday. not bad after tomorrow. >> all right. great. we can deal with it. >> thanks. well the irish sea is cold and unforgiving as a bunch of sailors discovered when their ship sank and prince william

came to their rescue. >> we have the story from michelle. >> reporter: everything about this mission was treacherous. middle of the night, pitch black, gale force winds, waves 20 feet high. above it the air force helicopter rescue co-piloted by prince william. below, two sailors clinging to a lifeboat. they lowered a rescuer to the violent surface and pulled both russian crewmen to safety. the huge british freighter was hit by an enormous wave, rolled, split in two and sank. one body was found, other's missing. this is prince william's day job. he talked about it just before his wedding. >> it was apparent how important the job is.

when you have 14 knot windses carried down and you are trying to get to someone who broke a leg, it gets interesting. >> reporter: in september when we saw them on a visit to a hospital, what we didn't see is he just work add 24 hour shift, up all night. he rescued a woman with a head injury, picked up a fellow serviceman on a ship who needed to get to a sick loved one, then tackled his royal duties. >> it definitely is advanced flying. it's rewarding. put it together and it's a fantastic job. >> is it too dangerous for a future king? >> he said he didn't want to be wrapped up in wool and made to do easy duties. he wanted to have a proper job. this is his duty. >> reporter: it's hard to describe the level of respect and admiration the people here have for his military service.
