harassing women. new developments in the child molestation case involving a coach from syracuse university basketball team. the university fired bernie fine followed by allegations of a third person claiming abuse by fine. there are questions about the validity of a recording involving fine's wife and one of the accusers. a relative says the audio was tampered with. jay gray reports. >> reporter: on sunday, long time assistant basketball coach bernie fine was fired after a third victim came forward accusing him of sexual abuse. he'd been an assistant at syracuse 35 years was already on leave. the head coach called the new allegations disturbing and deeply troubling in contrast of previous statements supporting fine. the brothers said they were

abused by fine more than 20 years ago. >> he started to touch me. honestly, i don't remember if i thought that was what was supposed to happen. i know i cringed up and didn't want it to happen. >> reporter: also on sunday, two days after searching fine's home for more than six hours, espn aired a phone call recorded by a victim in which fine's wife acknowledges the abuse. >> i know everything that went on with them. maybe he's not aware of it but he is -- he trusted somebody he shouldn't have trusted. >> reporter: he recorded the call because he didn't think his allegations would be believed. >> this man claims he was molested by fine in 2002. >> there could be many other victims in this case as well. if somebody didn't back up bobby

davis and his story, then this could continue. >> reporter: he faces sexual assault charges in maine involving a 14-year-old boy. he's pleaded not guilty to those charges. coach fine called all the allegations against him patently falsz. in a case that's strikingly similar to the scandal and cover up unfolding at penn state, there are questions here at syracuse about what university officials knew and when. >> it's a penn state world. there's an element to the stories of what happens in vegas stays in vegas. you can see how powerful the institutions are. >> reporter: institutions facing the fall out. scandals in the programs that built their prominence. jay gray, nbc news, syracuse. >> scandals at syracuse and penn state are prompting states to consider making laws on reporting sex abuse. virginia lawmakers are considering a bill that would make it a requirement for

college coaches and coaches of private youth sports teams to report a possible crime. >> reporter: at most virginia campuses administrators will tell you university policy already requires faculty and coaches to report sex abuse whether it involves children visiting campus or students. there's no requirement under virginia law and the wake of the penn state scandal, that could soon change. these are two of the first bills filed for virginia's upcoming bill. house bills three and four and both deal with reporting child sex abuse. they are needed to make sure what happened at penn state doesn't happen on any virginia campuses. >> we need to tell the public in no uncertain terms, very clearly what's a moral obligation is a legal obligation replacing persons in positions on authority in terms of sports with kids.

>> reporter: right now, they are required to report child abuse or neglect. the proposed legislation adds coaches and athletic directors at colleges and universities and private schools. he wants coaches and directors of private sports teams to report it as well. >> if you are an athletic director or coach in an institution of higher learning or a private team or school, you are covered. >> reporter: they welcome any legislation that underscores their existing policy and strengthens reporting. orientation of new staff includes a discussion of the policy. >> we will incorporate what has been happening in the nation over the last month or so into the conversations to drive home the importance of this. >> reporter: they say discussions are under way about how to reemphasize it to

faculty, staff and coaches here. in virginia, failure to report child sexual abuse carried a $500 fine. no other criminal penalty. there's been a shake up. bruce boudreaux, fired. hakeem has more on this. >> the players were not responding to bruce boudreaux. it's what george mcfee said. they hired dale hunter. a 51-year-old who was a successful junior coach in canada. he'll try to do what boudreaux couldn't. take a team full of talent and turn them into stanley cup champs. he led the team to their only stanley cup finals in '98. hunter was one of the best junior coaches. as for bruce boudreaux, he won 200 games faster than any coach

in modern nhl history. he led the team to playoffs but never made it past the second round. after a 7-0 start, the caps struggled going 5-9-1. the former players emotional after hearing the news. >> when i first found out this morning, my first thought was i wish i could have done more. you know, it's the nature of the beast. it's a business. we understand it. i feel terrible for bruce because he's leaving his dream job. >> i'm a players coach but also the players will know when i'm mad at them. that's the way you have to be to win games. mistakes, everybody makes mistakes out there. if they continue mistakes, there's rep recushions. >> hunter is one of four players in capitals franchise history to have his number retired. tomorrow he makes a coaching debut at verizon center where number 32 is hanging from the rafters.

jim and doreen? >> thanks, hakeem. a woman wanted for carjacking and bank robbery is on the move. police say she's suspected of stabbing a woman who gave her a ride at a safeway in baltimore county on thanksgiving morning. the victim suffered defensive wounds on her hands. she's expected to recover. >> the maryland man suspected in the disappearance of his travel companion in aruba is scheduled to be released from jail? authorities will continue with their investigation. jeff rossen has more. >> reporter: the prosecution case may be crashing down, hard. in over three months, they have been unable to find robyn

gardner, dead or alive. unable to find evidence against gary giordano. the judge had enough. ordering his release from joul tomorrow. this is his lawyer. >> when i asked him how he felt, he started to cry. >> reporter: prosecutors are fighting his release but in another setback, aruba's appeal court won't hear the case until wednesday, some 18 hours after giordano's release. if he's not on the island is the case effectively over? >> no. no. our country does have a treaty in place for extradition. we will go on with the investigation. >> reporter: the case is bizarre in this surveillance video, they are seemingly happy. hours later, she's gone. never to be seen again. giordano says he and robyn left

president obama hosted a summit with european leaders at the white house. he urged them to take bold

action. he warned that problems with europe's economy can become problems for american workers. >> it's much more difficult for us to create good jobs at home because we send so many products and services to europe. it's such an important trading partner for us. >> without deep spending cuts, tax hikes and bailouts, the european economy could collapse sparking global crisis. some pointed out president obama was not able to lead by example today because congress failed to reach a deal on similar drastic measures here. today marked the first time most egyptians could vote in an election without a preordained outcome. we have the report. >> reporter: the polls have closed on the first day of

egypt's historic elections. it's a two-day process that will kick off several weeks of voting. today went good so far without glitches. there was a strong voter turnout. there's minnesota minor incidents, but nothing to derail the process. the voter turnout has been incredibly high despite clashes that threatened, if you will, the elections. they are going to resume for a second day on tuesday. >> nobody would have imagined this turn out. look, we've been here from 9:00 in the morning. it's 4:00 in the afternoon. it's incredible. >> reporter: important to emphasize the elections are going to go for several months. it may very well be at the very least march of 2012 before we have a fully functioning parliament to make any laws. the reason why this is so important is because the

still 65 near waldorf. nothing on the radar to show you right now. watch what happens when we widen out. all the rain moving into kentucky and cincinnati. that rain will eventually work in our way. it's all moving around this area of low pressure. a very strong area of low pressure and snowing right now in paducah, kentucky and in memphis, tennessee. they could see two to four inches of snow. this is what i'm talking about here. very warm air ahead of the storm and cold air racing in behind it. alabama will see its first snow before we see our first snow. southern snow, you betcha. northern portions of mississippi, winter weather advisories for birmingham. birmingham could see one to two inches of snow. it will not translate to our region. it has to do with the warm air. the warm air coming from the south tomorrow. the frontal boundary producing heavy rain around noontime

tomorrow as the front moves through. the front goes through here. we get chilly. the mountains, once again, stop the coldest air from moving in. they stop the moisture on the backside. to the west, snow shoe, west virginia. we are not going to see snow on the eastern side of the mountains here. we'll stay chilly on wednesday. thursday, the sunshine returns and we still stay on the nice side. below average. with sunshine, it's not bat. let's take you through future weather. most of the night on the dry side. a few showers. 6:00 in the morning, the rain to the south and west. winchester, culpeper seeing the rain. by noon, this is where i think the heaviest rain could come in. some of it could come down heavily around the lunchtime hour. it moves out quickly. this is a quick dousing of rain. some of it could be heavy. nice and mild as you make your way out across the area.

occupy wall street supporters in los angeles are going to court in a battle to -- to battle a court order to leave their encampment. they are seeking a federal enjunction. the occupy l.a. protesters were supposed to withdrawal from the camp at midnight. police surrounded the area. the protesters were not evicted. they chanted we won after the police left. jury selection began in a case. paul is accused of using fake robo calls to keep voters from heading to the polls. >> relax. everything is fine. the only thing left is -- >> he's accused of trying to use an election day robo call to suppress the african-american votes. cummings is one person on a long

montgomery county police released surveillance video in hopes of tracking down a man in a series of carjacking. >> there have been three attacks, all involving older shoppers. it's happened off a wheaten shopping center. the last attack was particularly violent. >> reporter: this is security camera video of a man wanted in connection with three attacks on three seniors in the last five days. police hoping someone will recognize him and give them a call. in the meantime, at wheaten shopping town, security officers on foot, patrolling on bikes, driving in trucks, a high alert. you see three seniors were robbed after they were carjacked and kidnapped in the parking lot here.

three crimes committed by the same man in the same way at about the same time in the same place. the scene, the westfield wheaten shopping town. the time around 2:00 p.m. the victims, men over the age of 60. the method, the same. as the men tried to get into their car, a man approaches from behind with a knife, forces them into the passenger's seat and drives their car to an atm, forces them to withdrawal money from the atm, then drives that car to a place close by a metro station and then the suspect continues his get away on foot. police fingerprinting the victim's cars trying to identify the suspect. this happened last wednesday and again saturday and yet again yesterday. what's going on with this guy? >> this is speculating, but we believe he's desperate and that

the fight happened early sunday morning outside the heritage india restaurant and lounge on connecticut avenue near dupont circle. three men shot, one killed. another three were stabbed. d.c. councilman says he's planning to introduce legislation that requires nightclubs to hire off duty officers to patrol the streets outside. police shut down heritage for 96 hours while the investigation continues. today authorities recover an ashburn man's canoe. he was canoeing with his 7-year-old son and his dog yesterday in the beaver dam creek reservoir. they rescued the 7-year-old wearing a life jacket. the victim was not wearing a life jacket. prince george's county firefighters distributed smoke detectors in a neighbor where a little boy was killed and two

injured in a house fire. they are hoping to prevent another tragedy. the fire broke out yesterday on griffin street. investigates said they did not find a smoke alarm inside. today, fire officials went door-to-door to hand out fire safety information and check for smoke detectors. they visited 250 residences and found at least 60 smoke alarms did not work. they were replaced with new ones free of charge. disney decided not to build a hotel on national harbor. it's a multimillion dollar development over looking the river in prince george's county. without disney, it's attracting record crowds. >> reporter: ice carvings like you have never seen before. a chance to release your inner child. so cold in here they lend you a parka. it's gaylord's ice featuring

hello, everybody. i'm meteorologist, doug kammerer. a cool light display going on along the national harbor on the potomac river. a nice evening for it. temperatures still 66 degrees at the airport, right across the river. winds out of the south-southeast at 9 miles per hour. it is a gorgeous evening.

nowadays. an associated press finds one in 20 kindergarteners are skipping the vaccines. parns are seeking vaccine exemptions. states with the highest rate are in the west and midwest. officials are worried about outbreaks of diseases that were once all but stamped out. as we all know, when a baby is ready to be born, that's it. he or she is coming. it's what happened at bwi airport the other day. a woman stepped off the plane and went into labor. she gave birth on the floor of an airport restroom in concourse d. a police officer helped with the delivery. mother and child were taken to a hospital and despite the ordeal they are both doing well. how lucky for everyone on the plane she was able to hold off. oh my gosh.

so, dan has two headlines tonight. one, finally the skins win. but you have this bruce boudreaux thing. did you expect this? >> no, jim, to be honest, i didn't. i thought the capitals would give him the season and if he wasn't successful, look for a new head coach. they are believing time is running out. they have to get the team in the right direction. they still would qualify for the playoffs. losing eight out of the last 11 and the way they have been playing, underachieving superstars. bruce boudreaux, after four years, almost four years to the day has been fired. boudreaux is the fastest head coach to 200 wins in nhl

history. he's been replaced by a capitals legend. dale hunter, one of four players to have his number hanging from the rafters in the verizon center. george mcfee says it was time to make a change. >> bruce emptied the tank. he gave it everything. he's pushed every button he could push and if it worked for awhile, it's not working now. >> as a player, there's a ting of guilt that goes through you that you didn't do enough and you could have done more to help your team and not put everybody in this situation, a coach in this situation. >> this is where i have played a lot of hockey here. i have been cheering for the caps since i left here. i guess i'm the one rooting for them still. >> he's a legend here. you know, he played here, he was a captain. he knows how to win games.

he knows what's best for you, and hasn't gone through the grinding practices and the ups and downs of the pressure of playing professional sports in a very big professional sports city like cc is. i think he'll do fine. he played fine. >> it's interesting. you have a guy like your former coach, mike shanahan never played on the nhl level and former players like mike singletary. you can see both sides of the coin. >> you can. for the most part, it works one way or the other. mike took care of his players so well, you feel like he did play the game. >> mike shanahan. >> mike shanahan, i'm sorry. he treated the players the way he liked to be treated, like a cancer almost.

if you like bargains and hate crowds, today is your day. this year, cyber monday shoppers were online in record numbers. chris that has story. >> reporter: it wasn't the crush of black friday shoppers but millions were online searching for cyber monday holiday bargains. the a.p. reports by mid afternoon, online sales were up 20% over last year. by midday, even google had indications it would be better. >> today, we see searches for cyber monday up by more than double of last year. >> reporter: like it was when first launched in 2005, shoppers were expected to take advantage of cyber monday at the workplace. >> 46% of consumers plan to do shopping in the workplace. 11% of those shoppers plan to spend more than five hours
