crime streak behind her. it can be confusing. let's go through it to get an idea of when and where it started. first of all, record of november 18th incident, a bank robbery that started the spree. next a carjacking at tyson's corner mall where she stole a silver acura. one day after the other. then a bank robbery in springfield on the 22nd. november 24th, thanksgiving day, the most violent of the crimes, an attempted carjacking where she cut a woman and today's attempted bank robbery here in mcclain. we'll have more coming up at 6:00. in mccain, erica gonzalez, back to you. >> see you then. another legal victory for gary giordano who is back in the u.s. for the first time in four months. the prosecutor rejected the

request to put him back in jail. they still suspect him in the disappearance of robyn gardner. a judge ruled there wasn't enough evidence to continue holding giordano. he headed to new york. it's not clear when he will return to his home in gaithersburg. prosecutors will continue the investigation. under dutch law, thehave up to three years to press charges. we are following breaking news in montgomery county. a car came careening through a tailor's shop with one person standing inside. >> it happened in aspen hill. shomari stone is live on the scene for us. >> reporter: good evening. this place has been opened since 1990. this is the first time something like this happened. he was standing here, he actually had his clothes and putting hem on the rack here. his wife was standing behind

this counter. all of a sudden, they heard a huge crash. it came all the way inside. you can see there was a crew that put up plywood to protect the store from people coming in here and trying to steal stuff. look down here, there's bricks, shattered glass and all this stuff. investigators are trying to figure out what happened. let's roll video from up above. basically, we are hearing the driver might have confused the accelerator and brake and came plowing through here. police are trying to process what exactly happened. they plan on talking to her. the owner of the tailor shop, his wife was here and she was transported to the hospital with minor injuries. the driver of the car was taken to the hospital for minor injuries. itis remarkable no one was seriously injured. the owner says he's fortunate to be alive. here is the problem. it's going to take hundreds of

reason of insanity should be allowed to leave the mental hospital for extended visits with his mother in williamsburg. the shots fired 30 years ago. president reagan was wounded. a secret service agent and d.c. police officer were also hit by bullets. john hinckley left a note to impress actress jodie foster was found not guilty. he was treated for severe depression and narcissism. they say in the past two and a half decades, he's not committed a single act of violence. u.s. district court judge granted him permission in 2009 to take ten day trips to visit his mother in williamsburg, virginia. the judge is holding the hearing on this motion to grant hinckley expanded conditions of release. the proposal would extend his time to 17 days in williamsburg

the district's fire chief is proposing a radical change to the way firefighters are assigned to their jobs and how long they work. he wants 12 hour days with less time off between shifts. firefighters are currently at stations for a 24 hour period, then on for five days. the assignments are inefficient and can safe $30,000 a year. >> we are trying to reduce the personnel costs for one and still protect the city. our organization wants additional compensation. employees not used to working a 12-hour shift may have resist tense to this. >> any change in shifts would have to be negotiated with the firefighters union. it would be six months before changes are made. two department store

shoppers tell police they were pricked by syringes inside clothing. a third shopper found a broken syringe in the pocket of a pair of pants. officials are telling shoppers to be careful. it happened at a walmart in cartersville 45 miles northwest of atlanta. one was in a pair of footed pajamas and stuck a child in a finger. another was in a package of bras. officials say the syringers appear to be unused. the victims are being tested for hepatitis and hiv. new questions about the safety of juices parents serve their children every day. there's growing concern the juices may contain correspond sin generals. tom sherwood has the latest on this. hey, tom. >> hey, wendy. this is not easily put together in a soundbyte. here is why.

how much juice do we see excessive amounts of arsenic in it. it exceeds the amounts the federal standard allows for drinking water. there's no standard for juice. consumer reports says it's time for a federal standard on how much arsenic should be allowed in juice because kids drink so much apple juice. the problem is, if there isn't enough -- the problem is, if you are trying to set limits for apple juice and for kids, it should be lower than what's allowed in drinking water. that's where this is going. >> interesting. all right. >> the way to study consumer reports may scare parents about the safety of apple juice. they are raising concern about arsenic in apple and grape juice. of the 88 examples, 10% has arsenic levels that were higher than the standards.

there are no federal limits for juice. >> it's a product everybody feeds their children. i don't understand why there's such a thing in something so natural. if it's causing harm to her development, definitely i would stop. >> this isn't the first time apple juice has been in the headlines. >> i'm worried about it as a father of four. >> in september dr. oz learned about it from his own study. >> some of the best brands in america have arsenic in their apple juice. >> reporter: an independent lab found arsenic levels higher than the e.p.a. allows in drinking water. they took issue with the findings saying it did not differentiate organic and inorganic. most of the arsenic it found was

in organic. in september, they insisted apple juice is safe. >> that lot of juice has such a small amount of arsenic in it, it's no concern what so ever. >> reporter: the fda stands by that. now, they are conducting more tests to see if a level could be established. meanwhile, the juice products association says it's committed to following federal guidelines as it has for decades comparing apple juice to water is not appropriate. there's lower thresholds for drinking water because people consume larger amounts of water. what can you do as a parent? dilute apple juice with water for kids and try to limit it to no more than 12 ounces, if you have a child over the age of six, four to six ounces under the age of 6.

treadmill. i have water weights that i use to work out my arms at the same time. >> we have a weightless dumbbell here. however, under water it becomes a weighted dumbbell. as you run on the treadmill, you can do -- you can use these dumbbells in a swinging motion, you can do dumbbell curls, shoulder presses. i can still do my running on the treadmill and feel great when i get out. i don't feel impact on my joints. >> it's a good work out. i feel refreshed every time i get out. it's the only work out i have been able to stick with being able to do. like i do yoga and things like that. itis nice because it fits into my daily routine and it's something i can do. >> it's allowed me to do the same things that i can do on a treadmill but in here with less impact and less stress. >> i love the way i feel afterwards. i have lost some weight do it.

the man suspected of being the so-called east coast rapist may try for an insanity defense. he made his first appearance today. he's responsible for rapes and attacks of 17 women from new jersey to new england. he was extradited to prince william county yesterday. he answered no when asked if he understood the charges against

him. police in maryland caught the man who has been kidnapping, robbing and beating men in their 60s and 70s. his arrest follows the release of a surveillance video from a store. police tell us he may be responsible for other crimes, too. pat collins joins us live from hyattsville where he spoke to one of the victims. pat? >> reporter: jim, neighbors say he's the son of a minister. police describe him as a serial carjacker, kidnapper and robber. he targets older men but he, himself, just turned 50. police say this is atm video of the suspect henry lee sanders at work. he's the man in the redskins jacket. in this video, he's trying to force a victim to take money out of a bank machine on new hampshire avenue. he's linked to a number of

and said my mother is sick. i need a ride to the hospital. can you help? sure the doctor said. he let the man into the car, drove him to the hospital. in front of the hospital, he began to beat the doctor there in the car. >> he said i need your car and told me to get out. i said you gotta be kidding. he hit me on the side of the head. we taught a little bit. he was getting the better of me. >> reporter: he escaped. the suspect made off with his car, wallet and credit cards. >> one of the things i used to emphasize is to make your day better, do something for somebody else every day. i just changed my mind about that. living in the district, i'm doing nothing for nobody else. i'm ashamed to say that. >> reporter: now, while all this was going on, sanders was out on

a happy reunion could be in the works for a lost dog named foxy that we told you about yesterday. a woman brought in this little dog more than a week ago after she found him injured and wondering in traffic in prince george's county. she took him to fairfax county. it made the search for the owner more difficult. two families have called. they believe he may be their lost dog. the shelter's dog is working to determine whether he may belong to either of them. that would be lovely for this little dog to get reunited with his family. >> yeah. an iraq war veteran can claim a victory in the battle of a treehouse for his sons. it fulfilled a promise to his kids, it didn't make everybody happy. derrick ward is live with more on the story. >> reporter: this is about more than a treehouse. it was a father and son's project and a promise that

almost fell victim to process of beaurocracy, almost, that is. there are several different styles of houses in this fairfax county neighborhood. only one at the center of a controversy. it's nothing elaborate, but a dream home, a father's cleem to be fulfilled for his sons at the end of his deployment in iraq. >> my whole deployment, i must have made hundreds of sketches, what can i do to fulfill my promise to build a tree house. >> reporter: he got home and got to work. then he got the notice, despite the fresh paint and skill that went into the treehouse, it didn't pass muster with the county. an inspector told him tree houses didn't need a building perm permit. >> notice of violation. >> he needed special permission to keep the treehouse. after petitioning the house once, he denied, but not beaten.

word got out about the dilemma. another military man on the west coast who he never met gathered somehows of petition signatures. another neighbor donated land caping to help it blend better. his sons were not to be left out of the learning session. >> the boys got 166 signatures. >> reporter: finally, the zoning appeals date arrived. this time, the board members agreed the treehouse could stay. a happy ending. the neighborhood is a little closer. the boys learned a few things about local government. the soldier stays true to his word to his son. >> this was a promise to them. >> we understand they will have to remove the treehouse in five years. that leaves plenty of time for the family to hang out and help build childhood memories. live in the news room, back to
