been jailed there for two years. thanks for starting your weekend with us, i'm angie goff. >> good morning, everyone, i'm erica wonsalis. a scandal surrounding one of the council members. >> the fbi and irs raided the home of harry thomas jr., the d.c. councilmember is accused of diverting city money to buy cars and pay for trips. >> news 4's jackie bensen has more on the raid. >> reporter: not after long they left the house of the councilmember followed by his attorneys. >> we'll find he didn't violate any criminal laws. that's what we told the press. >> reporter: just after dawn they raided the home, items were

taken from the home, at one point thomas' motorcycle seen at the front of the flatbed tow truck and his chevy tahoe were towed away. the federal government and the irs is looking into thomas' use of $300,000 to fund a youth sports program. he returned the money after questions were raised but admitted no wrongdoing. >> i'm hoping they can bring these things to a conclusion quickly and the council and the government can move on. >> i'm sad that it has reached this point, and my feelings, i've been thinking about councilmember thomas and his mother and his family, and how terribly impactful this really must be for them. >> the d.c. council was supposed to discuss this matter late friday afternoon. it was postponed until monday. jackie bensen, news 4 today. >> d.c. mayor vincent gray

commented saying "i continue to support the investigation into these allegations so that justice can run its course." gray went on to say, "for the sake of the district i hope the investigation is concluded quickly." the investigation into misuse of city funds dates back this spring. the finance office started its probe in march. in june federal authorities got involved. the district of columbia attorney general filed a lawsuit, accused thomas of spending the funds on an audi, vacation and other personal expenses. last month "the washington post" reports the district denied him an emergency allotment of $5 million to restore a market. the owner of the market denies requesting city assistance. >> stay with nbc 4 and nbcwashington.com for continuing updates on the raids of harry thomas jr. >> erica nice to have you with us here on this saturday.

house. cain has been dogged by policy mistakes, several allegations of sexual misconduct and a claim he's carried on an affair for 13 years. he spoke with his wife yesterday for the first time since ginger white came forward saying she had a relationship with cain. a new poll from "the des moines register" shows support for cain in iowa plummeted. back in october he was polling around 23%. now he's at just 8%. the iowa caucus is scheduled for a month from today. and donald trump is joining the republican presidential race as a debate moderator. the business mogul will moderate a gop debate hosted by the conservative website newsmax in december. jon huntsman already announced he's not going to attend and had some choice words for those attending. his spokesman told yahoo! news

we look forward to mitt romney and newt gingrich sucking up to trump, with a big bowl of popcorn. a 62-year-old alan gross claims he was trying to help a small community in cuba get internet access, he was a subcontractor for a u.s. agency for international development. a cuban court sentenced him to 15 years in prison. authorities in havana won't explain exactly what gross did and they said the activities "constitute crimes in many countries in the world including in the united states and disrupts cuba's constitutional order." a pakistani native living in woodbridge, virginia, pled guilty to terror charges after federal authorities discovered a violent video he posted to youtube. this video was posted by -- ♪ 24-year-old jubeir ahmad.

he committed to conspireing with a muslim extremist group for a video. it calls for violent jihad against enemies of islam. terrorist experts say this was a call to arms for young muslims to rise up against america. >> my view is not something that you have doubt, if it will incite hatred or not. it certainly can make a young muslim feel a lot of anger and some of them can go further and do violent acts against americans. >> ahmad will be sentenced next april. he faces 15 years behind bars. former democratic presidential candidate george mcgovern is recovering this morning after a hard fall and hitting his head. he's being treated as a south dakota hospital. the former south dakota senator was on his way to do a live interview with c-span at dakota wesleyan university. his daughter says he tripped on the way to the set.

authorities in arkansas say they've located country singer mindy mccready and her 5-year-old son and are transporting them back to florida. they say they were found hiding in a closet in the singer's boyfriend's home. mccready took her son from her parents' florida home earlier this week. they have custody of the singer's child. she said she was doing it to protect her son. mccready recently announced she's pregnant with twins. no word yet on if she will face any criminal charges. dr. conrad murray appears to be getting ready to appeal his

this holiday season one of d.c.'s oldest neighborhoods is giving you a look at his history. the annual logan circle holiday house tour and wendy rieger shows how this house has changed quite a bit from its shady past. >> reporter: if this house could talk it would tell you it was built in the 1860s and spent a portion of our recent times harboring an unsavory element. >> a long history as a crack house. >> reporter: ryan ortiz got a hold of this house and transformed it. this is one of the jewels in logan circle's crown that will be open to the public sunday. it's got a modern open floorplan and side yard that gives this city dwelling a mediterranean feel. the theme for this holiday house tour is restoration and renewal, a celebration of the vibrancy that has returned to this neighborhood, once known for its hookers and homeless.

enjoy your weekend, everybody. it's finally here, saturday morning, after a long, hard back to work and school week following that thanksgiving holiday, it's always tough to go back to work after a holiday like that. outside on your first weekend of december, clear sky, temperatures below freezing in most of the western suburbs this morning, still above the freezing mark in washington. washington national airport has not been too freezing yet this winter season. a lot of the western suburbs clearly have been. right now in washington 37 degrees, a light breeze out of the north at five miles per hour, a few high, thin clouds out there first thing this morning, that's the case through much of your saturday and your sunday as well. no real threat for rain until we get to late monday or tuesday but first thing on your saturday morning, temperatures mid-20s across western fairfax, louden county and montgomery county. 30 in gaithersburg, 29 degrees in waldorf and laplata.

this afternoon plenty of sunshi sunshine, temperatures low 40s mid morning, upper 40s to near 50 later on this afternoon, gradually the winds come across the south, allowing tomorrow to be a little bit warmer today. nothing showing up on doppler for us but there are rain shers well back out to our west and yes indeed snow down to the far western part of the oklahoma and texas panhandles. heavy rain so chicago and st. louis it is all come our way but slowly and as a result i don't think we'll have to worry about rain until the tuesday time frame. for today a clear sky to get things started. high level clouds on the increase by later on today and tomorrow. rain chances hold off until late monday or more likely tuesday. here is your saturday forecast, mostly sunny, high clouds coming in later today. a pleasant enough day to be outside. highs today upper 40s and low 50s and tomorrow, a little bit more in the way of cloud cover but a south breeze will put temperatures into the mid and upper 50s for tomorrow. the seven-day forecast great

will be rain for them. further west snow into parts of the rockies so good luck for that trip. outside for us today mostly sunny, high clouds coming in later in the day. today's highs up in near 50, tomorrow's highs 55 degrees with a few extra slouds coming. rain chances don't show back until tuesday. >> thanks a lot, chuck. news from overnight, one person is dead after an suv and a car collided in 270 in gaithersburg. the accident shut down northbound lanes of 270 near 370 for more than an hour. police are saying very little about the crash. they do say that one driver was killed. the other driver was rushed to the hospital, and there's no word on his or her condition. we're continuing to poll this story and will bring you any updates as they become available. montgomery county police are looking for a suspect they believe is behind four separate convenience store robberies. the four robberies happened in gaithersburg over the past few

months. the suspect or suspects hit two 7-eleven stores in october and the same cvs store twice in the past two weeks. this is surveillance video from one of the 7-eleven robberies in the 19,000 block of watkins mill road. if you have any information, call montgomery county police or crime solvers. authorities are offering up to $1,000 to anyone with information that leads to an arre arrest. a man walked into all saints preschool in 9:15 in the morning, in the middle of the dropoff period. he made off with cash and metro fare cards. investigators say he tried the same scheme at three other schools nearby. last year, police in fairfax county busted holiday scammers with nearly $200,000 worth of stolen merchandise. they're at it again this year and the money is already starting to wrack up. i recently went to tyson's

corner mall where authorities are looking for con artists. they've already recovered nearly $30,000 worth of stolen merchandise this season but the thieves aren't just local. a $10,000 rolex watch, that's what one man tried to get away with using a fraudulent credit card at a high dollar jewelry store in tyson's corner last week. the store clerk called them after they said the suspect's behavior was off. r.a.t. or retail anti-theft team, is hitting the streets. some are in regular uniform but most will be undercover, dressed like anybody else. >> what we're looking for now in tyson's corner, which is the out of state crime rings that are coming into this area, tyson's corner in fair oaks and fairfax county in general is known for a very wealthy population. >> dawn has had her credit card abused and more leery of her purchases this time of year.

>> i try to put check signature so they'll ask me for my i.d. and for the most part that does work. >> reporter: police say the typical shoplifter has evolved, now using fake credit cards and fake currency, working their hot items into the black market in states as far away as florida, north carolina, pennsylvania, and new york. that's why police urge shoppers to be aware of their surroundings, don't dress extravagantly, only carry credit cards that you'll use and don't leave your purse unattended. police say last year the iphone was a big ticket item. this year, it still appears to be electronics and costly clothing. >> what do these professional con artists look like? police say they tend to go for store corners and always looking over their shoulders and they're also trying to steer clear from shoppers and police officers alike. new media reports say los angeles police used undercover tactics to infiltrate a camp of

occupy protesters. wednesday officers raided the n encampment and arrested nearly 300 people. an anonymous police source told the "los angeles times" officers tried to blend in at demonstrations to learn about plans to resist or use weapons against police. lapd responded to the report saying occupy meetings were public and easily tracked. syracuse head basketball coach jim boeheim apologizes for comments he made against his former assistant coach. yesterday he "misspoke very badly" when he questioned the motives of the three men who accused better thanny firnie fi abuse. 'ccused the three of lying about money and acted out of long time loyalty to his assistant coach. boeheim said he would help raise awareness against child abuse by working with local charities. the time is 6:38. it was more than just televisions and clothing flying off the store shelves during

soon you're going to have one more airline option right here in the d.c. area, jetblue announced it will soon fly out of reagan national airport. the discount carrier beat out five other airlines in an auction for landing rights here in d.c. jetblue paid $40 million to get the operations here. the airline will have eight daily takeoff and landing slots. jetblue has not named the destinations just yet. it also has not said when the flights will begin. toys and tvs weren't the only items flying off store shelves on black friday.

gun sales reached record numbers last week. how's that for a stocking stuffer? the fbi says it got more than 129,000 applicants for background checks for prospective buyers since last friday. some gun industry analysts say the surge can be attributed to women interested in sports shooting and more people wanting firearms to are protection. about three weeks until christmas, it looks like this year's hot holiday toy is completely sold out, the leappad explorer. a check of online stores including toys "r" us, walmart, kmart and target showed the tablet is already gone. there are some left on amazon, however. the sellers are cashing in big time on the demand. some are selling it for nearly double the price the original value. not surprised by that. >> well, i mean, it's like anything in america, if you want it, there's somebody that will sell it to you. >> ages 4 through 9 so i'm off the hook this year.

charlottesville, 30 degrees in hagarstown, 40 in annapolis and shady side and diehl. plenty of sunshine coming your way for today with temperatures climbing into the upper 40s and low 50s for a time this afternoon. nothing showing up on doppler close to us. the nearest rain drops to us are a long way back out to the west so if you're traveling towards chicago or st. louis probably have airline delays going in those directions but here in the mid-atlantic, clear sailing up and down i-95 from new york city down to the carolinas. mostly sunny to get the day started. i think we'll have a gradual increase in some mid and high level clouds later on this afternoon and that trend will continue on through tomorrow. seasonably cool outside for the rest of your afternoon today. again, typical for overnight lows tonight, back down mostly into the 30s, and then tomorrow a little bit more in the way of some cloud cover coming in by 6:00 tomorrow afternoon, but again, still the rain chances hanging back out to the west until probably tuesday. so for today, mostly sunny, again some mid level and high level clouds coming in later this afternoon but that won't bother us at all. highs today around 50 degrees
