i enjoy spending time with people. >> jerry sandusky speaks again. the former penn state coach tries to clarify whether he's sexually attracted to young boys. and good evening. i'm wendy rieger. we begin with decision 2012 and a shakeup in the republican presidential race. herman cain has now suspended his campaign. that doesn't mean he is saying good-bye to politics. nbc's brian moore joins us live on capitol hill with the latest. brian? >> reporter: wendy, cain is out of the race, but insists he is not going away. embattled gop presidential candidate herman cain is calling off his run for the white house. >> with a lot of prayer, and soul-searching, i am suspending my presidential campaign. >> reporter: he remained defiant.

>> i am not going to be silenced, and i'm not going away. >> reporter: cain lashed out at the media and the political establishment, angrily denying sexual harassment allegations and the claims just this past week of a 13-year affair. cain's wife stood behind him, literally. >> i am at peace with my wife. and she is at peace with me. >> reporter: cain made his announcement at what was expected to be a rally. >> i told my boys we were going to go see the next president. >> i think he represents all of america. >> reporter: a month ago cain was leading the presidential pack and now he's the first front-runner to fall. >> plan "b" is i will continue to be a voice for the people. >> reporter: cain said he will continue to push his 9-9-9 tax reform and other elements of the campaign that has run its

course. >> we're not done yet. >> and cain says he will endorse another candidate revealing that it will not be president obama. wendy? >> brian moore, thanks. the d.c. council is expected to meet on monday for what's next for harry thomas jr. the fbi and irs raided his home in northeast d.c. yesterday. he was accused of taking $300,000 that had been earmarked for a youth program. he is repaying that money but has admitted to no wrongdoing. the council could vote to reprimand him or strip him of committee assignments. tonight we have an exclusive for you. georgetown students say they came face to face with an intruder. there were actually two burglaries about 30 minutes apart, one on 36th street and one on o street. the disguise made the experience that much more frightening. >> it was something you would see in a scary movie, like

somebody coming out with the "scream" mask. >> reporter: a real-life nightmare for patricia and her roommate. >> i started screaming blood i murder, 911, police. >> reporter: the girls say a man broke in through a back door connected to a bedroom. he then worked his way upstairs, bouncing from room to room, pocketing an ipod and some cash. a chill tipped them off that something was wrong. >> our basement door had been opened, and neither of us had left it open. we noticed there was a breeze coming from the back. >> reporter: not long after, a man came running down the stairs. when the girls screamed, the man fled out another back door. >> just coming home and being alone, i don't feel safe. >> reporter: and neither do their neighbors. not long before her house was robbed, police say a man surprised another student, down the block, by popping out of her closet. he said he was looking for a party. then he ran. >> just makes me want to make sure i keep my doors locked. >> it's pretty scary, you know, just the fact that you don't

know if somebody's in your closet, they're going to jump out and potentially harm you. >> reporter: and now they've been scared straight. >> stay alert at all times. you never know what might happen. have your cell phones ready if something might happen. >> reporter: anyea is thankful nothing happened. >> he was completely covered. >> police are not sure if both of those incidents are connected. georgetown university sent out a safety alert letting students know what happened. a second person has died after being hit by a car at home depot on thanksgiving day. he was part of a group of day laborers who were -- who were plowed into in high yatsville. police are still investigating it. no charges have been filed. the penn state sex abuse scandal, former coach jerry sandusky spoke on camera for the first time since his indictment. in an interview with "the new york times." sandusky denied molesting any

boys. he said head coach joe paterno never confronted him about inappropriate behavior. and he clarified an answer he gave bob costas last month asked whether he was sexually attracted to young boys. >> if i say no, i'm not attracted to boys, that's not the truth, because i'm attracted to young people, boys, girls. >> sexually, you're -- >> i enjoy -- that's what i was trying to say, i enjoy spending time with young people. i enjoy spending time with people. >> that was sandusky's lawyer in the background clarifying that sandusky's not, quote, sexually attracted to young people. sandusky agreed to the interview because he felt prosecutors were distorting his work with children. former presidential candidate george mcgovern is in stable condition in a south

his story seemed innocent enough. a man walked into a church and asked for information about the preschool there. but police say this guy was not a concerned parent, he was a thief. darcy spencer joins us live with the story on this. >> reporter: take a look at this picture. this was taken off of the surveillance video. you see around his neck, a piece of jewelry, that is a cross. and police are saying that was part of a ruse of a con man whose crimes are despicable. the man shown in this surveillance video, wearing all black, and a large silver cross, or crucifix around his neck may be responsible for churches in chevy chase, maryland, and in d.c. >> let's give him a lesson. >> reporter: the video was taken on chevy chase circle. a receptionist allowed him into

the building around 9:15 grids morning. he said he was a parent seeking information about the preschool. >> he took an opportunity at a busy time when kids were arriving, to wander through unoccupied offices and classrooms and taking things. >> reporter: those things were hundreds of dollars in cash from the purses of preschool workers, and a metro smart trip card. when confronted by the head of the preschool, he vanished. >> apparently using this ruse of a parent looking for a school, also using that religious crucifix in a rather despicable way to gain trust. >> reporter: police believe he may have also pulled the same scheme at three other nearby churches. chevy chase baptist, chevy chase presbyterian and sacred sacrament. >> to do this at christmas time, i mean, find the guy, put him in jail, and then forgive him. >> christmastime in a chump? that just doesn't sound right.

we had another successful nba washington pnc bank community shred. more than 3,000 people showed up at prince george's community college in largo today. shred it helps protect people from identity theft because it gets rid of their personal documents and it's all for free. christmas came early for 80 local kids in prince george's county today in the form of a mini shopping spree, with some special escorts. news4's derrick ward tells us. >> reporter: there are waving chirns in those cars. these cops are out to capture

holiday spirit and they're getting backup from young residents all too happy to assist. they sit down with the big man. then into the aisles for some shopping. the ninth annual shop with a cop. >> we started the program in 2003 with eight children. >> reporter: this program is aimed at seeing that the christmas wishes of about 80 deserving children don't go unanswered. >> this program is good for the children. it's good for the community. and it's good for the police officers as well. >> reporter: retailers like target and prince george's plaza fund the excursion with $100 gift cards with each child. >> it gives you a great feeling to know that we are giving back to the community and we're helping children and families in need. >> reporter: these young people are recommended for the program by their schools. it's been a tragedy, some kind of adversity in their lives that makes the holiday spirit a challenge. but here on this day, the only challenge is choosing the right gift, and not just for themselves. >> i want to get my mom and dad and big brother something. >> of course, we allow them to
