mcgrath. >> reporter: good morning, barbara. the sentencing hearing is under way, but this could take a while. they have just begin, and we have not heard from any of the character witnesses as of yet. there was a bit of a surprise. take a look at this video. johnson was walking with the aid of a cane, and that's something that we have not seen before. under sentencing guidelines, johnson could get a sentence from 11 to 14 years in prison. johnson's attorneys are arguing from a deviation from the guidelines, and they want something less for a minimum of 11 years, and whps they dropped a bombshell, and they said he is ill and has been diagnosed with parkinson's, and they say a long prison sentence would be a death sentence, and he is 62 years owed and his health is deteriorating. the prosecutors say it's all new, and they have pictures of him playing golf and carrying a

big, heavy golf bag. some of his symptoms may be due to heavy drinking, something he has been having issues with lately, and they say even if johnson later came down with full blown parkinson's disease, the prison can provide care for such inmates. this is a case of corruption that brought down the executive and his wife, a county councilwoman. johnson was caught accepting bribes from developers in a pay to play scheme. >> we are attaching it to one of -- >> unbenounced to johnson, the fbi had him under surveillance for years. following his arrest, johnson was defiant.

>> i am convinced without a shadow of a doubt that i am going to be vindicated. >> ultimately in the face of damaging evidence, johnson plead guilty that there was a telephone conversation with his wife was the key to the case, as fbi agents banged on the door of their home. in that conversation, jo johnso tells his wife to tear up the check. they found 80,000 in johnson's underwear. leslie johnson faces a possible 18 months in jail. >> reporter: jackson sun entered

the courtroom. he was solemn, and walking with the cane. before the whole sentencing began, he did at one point turn around and take a look at some of his supporters, and he waved and gave a small smile. the courtroom is packed. they had to open an overflow room in a different part of the courthouse to accommodate the spectators here. as i mentioned earlier, this could take a while. we are expecting a few character witnesses, and the prosecutors are going to have to have their say before the judge hands down the sentence. meanwhile, jackson's wife, leslie johnson, will be sentenced this week for her role in the corruption case. she pleaded guilty to destroying evidence. she faces up to 18 months in prison.

trips and autos, but he has agreed to repay the money. and a gas tanker and at least two other vehicles collided causing the tanker to pull over. it affected the morning commute on the route and it was shut down most of the night while crews cleaned up the mess. the driver is okay and the crash is under investigation now. turning to the weather, and the rainy skies that we have had all morning long. veronica johnson is here for tom kierein -- we can't hear her just yet, and she will tell us if the rain will continue throughout the day. in the meantime, more news. a new group of protesters is camping out on the national mall this week and setting their

sights on congress. and there was a rally for what is known as the peoples' camp. today the demonstrators who include the unemployed, labor unions and a local group, we visit members of congress. tomorrow they plan to protest on k street. there won't be any overnight or surprise evictions for occupiers. a district judge ruled the national park service must give the protesters at least 24 hours notice before ae evicting them. now, to breaking news. a settlement has been reached from the west virginia coal mining disaster. the $210 agreement is between

overnight, nearly 60 people died in two attacks in afghanistan. a suicide bomber struck a crowd at a mosque killing 55 people. 150 have been wounded. hundreds of people gathered for a festival for other shiites, and many were killed when a bomb strapped to a bicycle was killed. the taliban strongly condemned the two attacks in a statement to the press. president obama is headed to kansas, where he will once again make his case for payroll tax cuts. the deadline to extend them is coming up at the end of the

endorse mitt romney for president. the announcement will happen this afternoon in paradise valley, arizona. the countdown is on to 5:00 tonight for the capital christmas tree lighting. a large crowd is expected on capitol hill. the tree is decorated with 3,000 ornaments and 10,000 l.e.d. lights. a second grader will help house speaker, john boehner, to flip the switch to turn on the lights this evening. what will they have? snow, perhaps? >> no, likely to be wet weather in the area. my drive in to work today congested and 30 more minutes added to the drive, and i am blaming it on the rain.

tomorrow morning we will have more rain around the area and tomorrow afternoon. it will get heavier. 57 degrees right now. the temperature, boeing nowhere fast. it's at 57 where we have been holding. umbrella ready today? we expect to see more showers coming through the evening. and by 7:00, 60, and 58, 57, and temperatures holding in the upper 50s throughout the day today. and all through the area, pretty mild conditions considering that our average high now is 54 degrees. here is a look at all the rain moving through, mainly to the north of us, and especially to the west. and charlottesville, virginia, seeing a quarter inch of rain.

and that's all moving from the southwest through the northeast. wet conditions right inside the beltway. as we open it up and expand out, we will show you where there is a lot more rain. the cold front still back in here. back into the areas of ohio and ineds. behind the front, cold air. there is snow falling west of chicago, illinois, and around st. louis and wichita, and this morning, that cold air, temperatures around denver were some 15 to 20 degrees below zero. watch the temperatures over the next couple hours. as we get into the afternoon here, we will see the numbers fall and the temperatures will fall by early thursday morning, and 40 degrees for a temperature, and then they will continue to head down. i think the cold air will come rushing in a little late to meet up with most of the moisture.

the best chance of snow on the backside of the system will be up to the north, around frederick county and loudoun county. occasional showers today. midnight, still some wet weather around the area, and tomorrow we will look at moderate and heavy rain moving through the area, and tomorrow i cannot stress enough, it looks like a soaker across the area where we could pick up an inch or two inches in spots. here is wednesday afternoon around 2:30. anywhere you see shading of yellow, that's moderate rain coming through areas of d.c. and waldorf. and the spots right now that could pick up most of the snow will be west of the blue ridge. there's a chance we could be anywhere between five and six inches of snow, and for areas around western area as well as

davi davis, west virginia, maybe some accumulations of snow, but there might be light snow falling on grassy services late wednesday night and early thursday morning. for your afternoon, occasional showers, and call it mild, 57 to 62 degrees. you will want to say umbrella ready for today. for your afternoon, more wet weather. as far as wednesday goes, a 90% chance of rain across the area, likely to be wet and pretty soggy and traffic probably a real mess, too. from 55 on wednesday, temperatures will head on down to freezing, and upper 20s to freezing, and a high of only 45 degrees on thursday. 45 the high on friday, and starting out well below freezing, and that will be the first time on thursday morning that i think here in d.c. that

well, looks like amanda knox is beginning to write a book about her experience behind bars. the move comes after an italian

right now, a federal judge returned to the courtroom in the

sentencing of former prince georges' executive, johnson. federal prosecutors claim it's a last-ditch plea for a man they say carried out one of the biggest corruption schemes in d.c. history. megan? >> reporter: well, barbara, jack johnson's health and age have been big topics of the sentencing hearing. what he walked in the courthouse this morning he was using a cane. this is video of him coming into the court earlier this morning. during the sentencing hearing, his attorney dropped a bombshell. they sjack johnson is suffering from parkinson's disease, and they are asking for a sentence lower than normal under the guidelines. they say his health is

deteriorating and a long sentence would be a death sentence for him. that's something prosecutors are disputing. they are disputing the diagnosis, and say jack johnson had problems with alcohol lately, and they have pictures of him that not long ago playing golf and carrying a big golf bag. they are back to the sentencing hearing at this point. we just heard a little while ago from prosecutors, and they say the evidence shows systematic corruption of a high office, and they say jackson steered millions from the developers and took bribes, and he was a former prosecutor, the state's attorney for prince george's county, and he knows the law and knows what he was doing was wrong and she should not be given leniency, and they say he did not need the money, and at the time this was

happening he made $180,000, and a good retirement plan and pensions and investment properties and the like and he had a big income, and to offset his criminal conduct by pointing to his years of public service, that's not right either. they say that should not be allowed, that he is not entitled to special treatment, the fbi has him on tape accepting bribes, and there's the infamous audiotape where he was heard instructing his wife to tear up a check for $100,000, and then to put $80,000 in her underwear to hide it from the fbi. we have not yet heard from the defense. we are expecting a sentence at some point today, just how long the sentence hearing will last. and his wife, leslie johnson, is not in the courtroom. >> we will continue to follow

every angle of the story, and when a sentence is handed down, we will bring it to you. right now, former illinois governor, rob blagojevich could face more than ten years behind bars. that would be the stiffest sentence for corruption in the state's history. this is day two of jury deliberations against an aid to robert ehrlich. he is accused of approving robocalls. they got automated calls saying the race was over.

prosecutors say little was killed because he gave a poor test. and then spotted driving the wrong way, and a white house spokeman said babbitt waited until monday morning before he told them the arrest. they are discussing his employment status. and babbitt is on leave at his own request. a fashion model is recovering after accidentally walking into a propeller of a small plain.

it's contagious. >> is it true that anybody who has had chicken pox at anytime in their life will have the possibility of the herpes virus? >> that's complicated, but the virus that causes chicken pox is in the herpes class, but not the virus. so that's totally different. we see herpes soster with chicken pox. viruses can maintain themselves on services for a number of hours, including days. so it's very important to do hand washing and hand sanitizing to eliminate the contracting of such viruses and bacterias.

but when we talk about herpes simplex one, that is above the waste and type two below the waste. because of sexual practices, we don't classify them as one or two anymore, because it's all still the same. >> how do you treat them? once somebody has one, what do you do? >> everybody should get a culture. what some people think are viruses, like ulcers, really are not. we pop a blister and we take a culture and send it to a lab, and within a matter of a few days we have the results. >> if you know it's that do you have something to treat it? >> if we know it's that we treat it with a preparation that a lot of people get, and it's the same medication f shingles as well, but at a much lower dose.

last week, and workers found a microchip that traced her back to virginia. the clinic then identified the owner and that's how she got home. two kittens are alive thanks to a caring canine. the bag was run over by traffic, and then along came reagan. the dog found the bag and dragged it all the way home and wined until the owner opened it. >> the instincts of the dog was to nurture and not kill, because the blood, some dogs would have responded to the scent. >> reagan, the dog is a hero. it took two weeks to nurse the little kittens back to good health. they took two feedings by model every two hours. volunteers are now caring for the kittens at an animal shelter. >> what a great dog.
