more rain. we are talking about the cold air rushing in at the end of the system when the moisture starts moving out. it looks as though there will be enough moisture left as the cold air meets up with it to give it snowfall. it's because of that we have a winter storm watch that covers a good portion of the viewing area west of 95. gaithersburg, to leesburg and where storm warnings off into maryland where there could be three inches of snowfalling. it's going to happen in a short period of time. here is a look at the radar loop. moderate to heavy rain later today. more coming into the area tonight. the deal is, folks, a quick burst of snow. it's not going to take much. the the road surfaces will be just fine for most of us. we have seen temperatures today in the 50s. it's where we are now at 52 degrees. we have been falling from the upper 50s. we are at 52 degrees now.

here is a look at the good night forecast. the other thing, the wind is going start picking up. any areas that got soaked might see a few trees around. rain and snow around 10:00, 11:00 p.m. i'll show you how much snowfall i think your neighborhood could get, coming up. >> thank you. we are following a developing story now on news 4 at 4:00. jerry sandusky has been arrested again after two new accusers came forward in the penn state sex abuse scandal. he eels accused of sexually assaulting ten boys in the last decade. they met him through his charity, the second mile. sandusky denied the allegations. according to the associated press, he's been taken to a pennsylvania county jail after being unable to post a $250,000 cash bail. a preliminary hearing is set for

next tuesday. today former illinois governor rod blagojevich learned his fate. he was convicted on 18 criminal counts trying to sell president obama's former senate seat. jay gray has details. >> reporter: for a politician whose career and life played out on a public stage, rod blagojevich's most important act was behind closed courtroom doors, no cameras or recorders as he asked the judge for mercy. 18 counts of corruption including trying to sell president barack obama's vacated senate seat. for the first time he acknowledged responsibility and apologized. he said the jury convicted me because of my actions. i caused it all. i'm so sorry. he turned emotional as he apologized to his family saying his life was in ruins quoting i

have no one to blame but myself and i never wanted to hurt anyone. after the comments, the judge took a 20 minute break, then announced his decision telling the courtroom he did consider blagojevich's testimony but that it came late. the verdict, 14 years in federal prison. one of the harshest sentences ever in a political corruption trial. >> sentenced to 14 years sended a strong message that the public has had enough and judges have had enough. >> reporter: with his wife in tears, he spoke briefly on his way out of the courthouse. >> this is a time to be strong and fight for adversity. it's a time for me to be strong for my children and for patty. >> reporter: a strength that will be tested as he moves to prison in february. his legal team says they will appeal. as it stands, he must serve at

least 85% of his sentence, which means more than 11 years behind bars. in chicago, jay gray, news 4. arrests here today during a day of action for protesters in the district. at least four groups including occupy d.c. are rallying today. a march down connecticut avenue turned into a stand in at the corner of 16th and k. when police ordered the protesters to stay, they refused. a dozen were arrested. there were demonstrations at 14th and k. >> we want it stopped. we want our government back. we want jobs back. >> we think policy should be set based on the common good, not the money corporations have and get. we are here because it's where all the money is and the lobbyists are. >> they gathered at 17th and l and 14th and k. we'll have more on that coming

up live at 5:00. police are looking for a couple high school girls accused of stabbing another teenage girl outside silver spring. the victim was attacked outside northwood high as she tried to break up a fight. it happened after a basketball game. the dispute started inside a school between a group of girls from kennedy high school. the victim is expected to survive. the police have a vague description of the suspects. today, at a forum for gop candidates, mitt romney unleashed an attack for president obama. they are not convinced he's conservative enough. brian moore has our story. >> reporter: losing ground and running out of time, mitt romney is fighting to convince conservatives he is the man to take on president obama. >> i don't think he understands why our economy is the most successful in the world.

i don't think he understands america. >> reporter: he went on the offensive at a gop presidential candidate forum held by the republican jewish coalition in washington. romney was well received as he slammed the president for being too tough on israel and gentle on iran. >> he's more generous to our enemies than our friends. >> reporter: the latest polls show romney's strength is wayning at the worst time. newt gingrich is in the lead and gaining momentum. >> how many agree we are far enough off the right track that we need fundmental change? >> reporter: his message is clearly hitting home with conservatives who question whether romney is conservative enough. romney is attacking the former speaker who has been married three times on family values. >> i will be true to my family,

a ceremony to remember those lost and honor those who survived. stephanie stanton has more on the anniversary from hawaii. >> reporter: a military flyover in the missing man formation followed by a moment of silence at 7:55 a.m. marked the moment the attacks began here. the presentation of colors and the national anthem helped commemorate the anniversary of the surprise attack on december 7, 1941. "uss arizona." more than 2400 died that day. now, 70 years later, 3,000 people came to remember including more than 100 survivo survivors. among them, this 88-year-old. he gave the keynote address at the ceremony. he was 18 when the attack happened and remembers it like it was yesterday. >> the day of infamy united our

there was a difficult passenger they had to get off. >> reporter: police never needed to assist the actor who left the plane, promptly booked a ticket on another american airlines flight. he said last flight with american where catholic school gym teachers from the 1950s find jobs as flight attendants. they told baldwin they are looking into the incident as the war of words continues to unfold. >> i don't think there was no problem. i felt alec baldwin was turning off his devices. he got a little angry, that's it. >> after baldwin went public several times, american airlines detailed the incident without

releasing his name. baldwin refused to turn off his device in accordance with regulations then took his ipod into the planes bathrooms even though the seatbelt light was on. he slammed the door so hard the cockpit crew became alarmed. he called the crew inappropriate names and using inappropriate language. the passenger was removed from the flight and denied boarding. >> hmm. facebook founder mark zuckerberg has a problem with personal settings. personal things were leaked online. they included one of his meetings with president obama. it was part of a glitch with a tool that allows users to use inappropriate material. it allowed them to view another's photos. facebook since fixed the issue.

tonight. i have been telling folks in the news room, this is like a jek l and hyde system. we are going from rain, at least five or six more hours of it to cold and windy conditions. we are talking a little bit of snow, too. speaking of snow, let's go down south where they don't normally get snow. this is memphis, tennessee where the snow started falling last night. they picked up a quick four inches of snow. it's a slushy kind of snow. the area high moisture content. for us, we are seeing the same thing. we are at 52 degrees. temperatures starting out early today upper 50s. we have seen falling temperatures today. a lot of moisture in the air. boy, the radar is covered as you will see in a moment. here is a look at your good night wake-up forecast. we have rain at 9:00. 10:00, i think we'll see the colder air move in. yes, 38 degrees. a mixture of rain and snow and

taking over to more snow very quickly. a burst of snow across good portion of the northwest counties, 11:00 at midnight. by 3:00 a.m., most of the moisture is gone, just about all of it. 5:00 a.m., clearing skies. still, i think windy conditions around the area. here is a look at storm 4 doppler. you can see how busy it is with rain covering the entire area. maryland, d.c., virginia. now, around fredericksburg and d.c. and fairfax with pockets of yellow. moderate rain coming down. we have picked up an inch to inch and a half. we could pick up more later tonight. look at this to the south and west. areas down in virginia, charlottesville, roanoke. these are thunderstorms. as all this moisture starts driving in with the area of low pressure along the front, we could see enhanced rain for a period of time. i don't know, maybe thunder snow west of the area.

heavy snow reported throughout areas of west virginia, outside of maryland. for us, watch what happens with the weather front. we switch from rain to snow, 10:00, 11:00 p.m. the skies will start clearing rapidly. a few clouds left early tomorrow morning. highest elevations early on. the snow may hang on longer, enhance d by the mountains, the altitude there. they could get three to six inches of snow. tomorrow, windy, chilly. you definitely need the coat. switching from the umbrella to the coat. clouds back to the area friday at 7:00 a.m. all in all, a day that will be remembered friday as a mostly sunny day, a chilly day. the cold is here. here is a look at how much snow you'll see. cumberland, three to six inches of snowfall. two to three in westminster, frederick, hagerstown. these are the areas i'm worried

about. it's been raining all day. crews haven't gotten out to treat the roads. hagerstown to petersburg. 270 early tomorrow morning, two to three inches of snowfall. may be slick on area roads. depends on the wind. for the most part, this is accumulation here on the grassy surfaces. fox lake, leesburg and sterling, one to two inches of snow mainly on the grassy surfaces. the temperatures have been so mild in the 50s. to the west, we could see a dusting of snow. more on that coming up later in the show, later in the newscast. falling temperatures is what we have seen already today. we continue to see that, 42 to 49 degrees then 29 to 34. much colder conditions for tomorrow morning and windy. we may be talking about windchill readings for tomorrow morning as well as tomorrow afternoon.

before he was sentenced, blagojevich apologized for the crimes and asked the judge for mercy. he'll turn himself in february 16th. police are looking for a couple high school girls after another teenage girl was stabbed outside northwood high school. a 17-year-old student was trying to break up a fight after a basketball game last night. the victim is expected to survive. a dozen protesters were arrested for blocking busy k street during a march downtown today. at least four groups, including occupy d.c. were taking part in the rally. they staged a stand-in and were taken into custody when they refused orders to move. jerry sandusky was arrested today after two new allegations of sual abuse. the latest victims say, like the

others, they met sandusky through his charity organization, the second mile. sandusky is charged with sexually assaulting ten boys. a change in the case at syracuse. >> there won't be charges in the case because the statute of limitations expired. >> he ripped the police and school for how they handled the investigation. >> reporter: fired syracuse basketball coach, bernie fine won't face charges that he abused two brothers more than two decades ago. they announced the investigation shows bobby davis and mike lane gave credible evidence but could not prosecute. >> their allegations would have

resulted in the arrest of bernie fine. >> the brothers told their story to espn giving details accounts of the abuse. >> i cringed up and didn't want it to happen. >> the fbi searched fine's home. later espn aired a phone call reported by davis where fine's wife acknowledges the abuse. at first, head coach defended his long-time friend. after the investigation found a third victim come forward, fine, who was on administrative leave was fired and made a public apology. >> a reaction without thinking. >> the third victim claimed fine molested him in 2002 in pittsburgh. school records may prove the claims to be false. today, fine's attorney released a statement saying the

incredible damage he's inflicted on mr. fine cannot be overstated. they are looking into the claims. meanwhile, the district attorney is asking other possible abuse victims to come forward. now the misdemeanor sex abuse charges had a statute of limitations of two years. pat? keeping the morning after pill behind the counter for those under 17. kathleen sebelius. that's despite the fda giving approval to put it on drugstore shelves. it can prevent pregnancy if taken within 17 hours of having sex. there could be new warnings on

the label of some birth control pills. the fda begins a hearing to look into whether yaz or the ortho ever patch carry the risk for blood clots. the benefit of clearing up acne. some also allow a woman to go months without a period. the hearing comes on heels of a study and the risk of clots caused by the drugs. a family pet goes missing and to a shelter. the dog never makes it home. >> we have the exclusive story tonight. >> if you have a dog or cat, it's probably happened to you. one minute, they are there. all of a sudden, they are gone. they take off. the couple you will meet tonight thought they did everything right when their dog went mising. zoey was found.

conversation type of snow for us. look at the observations. reporting heavy snow right now. what we have ahead of us is about six more hours of rain before that switch over. 52 degrees is where we are right now. 52 and a little breezy. look at the radar, just how busy it is throughout maryland, d.c., down through virginia. pockets there with moderate rain. south of d.c. around waldorf and fredericksburg. i watch this make its way north to northeastward. slowing our afternoon and evening rush down. west of the area, outside of hagerstown, maryland and winchester, virginia, another area of enhanced rain. it will all be moving eastward. we could get another half inch to inch out of this. the snow, of course, in west virginia. here is a look at where we are going to be at 9:00. here is a look at the rain. the rain is the snow. the cold air rushing in giving us the changeover.

areas mainly just along and west of e-82. heavy rain east, snow near i-81 and heavy snow at that. it's going to pile up fast. we are talking a couple hours here where the burst of snow is going to hit us for 9:00, 10:00, 11:00, 12:00 until maybe 2:00 a.m. the cold makes its way eastward. snow into westminster, around gaithersburg, prince william county, front royal. what we are going to find then is the rain switching to snow west of i-95 and making its way around northwest d.c. and heavy snow there as well. that's around 11:00. 9:00, 10:00, 11:00, areas west of the blue ridge, three to six inches there. here's a look at it. for us in d.c., a dusting. manassas, let's zoom in.

gaithersburg in rockville, leesburg, one to two inches of snowfall. conversational snow. you have school tomorrow, kids. 29 to 34. colder for tomorrow morning. we are clearing quickly. what we'll notice the most about tomorrow is the change in temperature from 55 degrees, most of this afternoon to 45 degrees tomorrow afternoon. that's with wind. likely to feel like we are around upper 30s for high temperatures tomorrow. sunshine is back for the end of the week. the high 48 degrees. we are starting out in many locations below freezing. a cold one for sunday morning, starting at 27 degrees. your weekend, breezy and cold, 32 to 44 degrees for the high temperature. the early part of next week, the continuation of cold. maybe getting up to 50 by wednesday. >> okay. >> get used to it. >> a burst of snow tonight. >> thanks. you have to be desperately cold to don one of those.

at a time when so many people are struggling to make ends meet and the government is trillions of dollars in debt, a couple is accused of welfare fraud taking money they didn't

need and weren't entitled to. mike has the details. >> reporter: nice house. all the custom windows. a million dollar view, actually the house is now valued at $1.2 million. the woman of the house has big bank accounts for $31,000, two for $5,000 and one for 11,000 tlars. the man of the house a cairo prakter. >> good people. >> reporter: over the past eight years the doctor and his wife, while living in this house, collects tens of thousands in food stamps and disability and

13 13 135,000 in disputes. >> when we come across cases like this alleged case, we think, you know, bring on the heat here. these are serious violations. >> reporter: the scam was unsophisticated. when she applied for the benefits, investigators say she claimed she lived alone with her two children with almost no assets. a few hundred bucks, a $2,000 car and listed her husband as landlord. he reportedly listed his office address for his residence. on a personal note, i'm happily married with two children. it was a cross-check that finally caught up with them. >> i think the public should be reassured this is a rarity in this regard. >> reporter: rare, perhaps. undetected for years during which time they lived in the

>> part of our area is under a flood warning. part under a winter weather advisory. doug kammerer is here to tell us what is going to unfold. >> it's one of those days where you have just about everything on the weather map. right now, it is the rain. the rain is the biggest problem we're going to see with the storm. the heavy rain right along the i-95 corridor including the beltway into prince george's county and the district. fredericksburg, a bout of heavy rain. this heavy rain will continue throughout the rest of the evening, to the west along 81 and winchester. we are going to see heavy rain there, too. we widen out and you can see all the rainmaking its way across the region. the rain is changing to snow through maryland. heavy snow through central portions of west virginia and that rain/snow line continues to creep off toward the east. the main storm system, it's well down to the south. here it is, right here.
