good morning, everybody. welcome to "news4 midday." i am barbara harris. it's friday, december 9th, 2011. right now the formal council member was found guilty of destroying evidence back in june. megan has more outside the courthouse now. >> reporter: leslie johnson arrived at the courthouse a little bit before the sentencing hearing got under way. she was flanked by her attorney. she walked through the front door quickly and did not speak to the press as she made her way

into the courthouse this morning. leslie johnson pleaded guilty to the destruction of evidence. she faces between one year and 18 months behind bars. the prosecutors are speaking to the judge. they say they want the maximum sentence in this case, 18 months. prosecutors say leslie johnson was not acting out of love for her husband when she destroyed evidence, but she was protecting herself as well and wanted to make sure all the evidence was gone because she, too, was involved. leslie johnson was arrested along with her husband, former county executive, jack johnson, weeks before she was to take a seat on the council. she took the oath and began to serve on the council. as the evidence against her and her husband mounted, leslie johnson pleaded guilty and

resigned from the council. a taped telephone conversation between leslie johnson and her husband as fbi agents pounded on the door of her home. >> yeah, flush that. >> reporter: in the conversation, leslie johnson asked what she should do about the cash? they are are banging -- >> put it in your panties and walk out of the house. >> when searched by the fbi, leslie johnson was found to have nearly $80,000 stuffed in her bra. >> according to prosecutors but for that wire tap, the fbi may have never known about the involvement of leslie johnson in the scandal. it will be the turn of the defense attorney's, and they are expected to argue for a lesser sentence. all of this is left up to the

judge. leslie johnson should know her fate here in about an hour or two. >> thank you, megan. on tuesday, former executive was sentenced to prison for taking pribz in exchange for favorable treatment and he was fined $100,000. he said he is haunted by his actions. today we are learning more about yesterday's deadly shooting on the virginia tech campus. police are refusing to reveal the name of the suspected gunman, but they do say he died of a gunshot wound and he was not a virginia tech student. we have the latest from the campus. >> reporter: it's very sad here on virginia tech's campus. we talked to different students, and many of them were too heartbroken to talk on camera. they are mourning over the

tragic loss. >> i feel it was a bad loss, considering it was a vt policeman. >> reporter: a 39-year-old, married father of five children, deriek crouse, and had been on the force for four years. >> everybody coming together and banding together, and we had support from other universities, and as a campus everybody came together to support one another. >> reporter: officer crouse made a traffic stop in the parking lot and the suspect walked up to officer crouse with a handgun and shot and killed him in his patrol car. the dashboard cam was rolling, and they are not telling us if it provided the shooting. >> it would provide closure for the family.

>> reporter: the suspect stole a car and then took a bus and then shot the officer. nbc news reports the police believe the man shot himself. >> it could have happened to any of them, and knowing that, it's disappointing. i don't know why anybody would have done that. >> today, many of the students will be studying. the final exams that were scheduled for today will happen tomorrow. back to you. >> the university is being commanded for its quick response to the shooting. the campus was locked down within seven minutes after the shooting was reported. and they sent updates to students every 30 minutes. and the virginia tech president said it worked like it should have. >> all of the technology worked perfectly well, and the individuals responsible for those areas did a splendid job. >> the federal government fined

the virginia tech for its slow response to the shooting spree on the campus in 2007. in fact, the university officials have been here in washington this week appealing that fine. >> a virginia state trooper and another man are in the hospital after a struggle between them ended in gunfire. it happened yesterday afternoon on interstate 95 near mile marker 116 in caroline county. the senior trooper, michael haimer, responded to a report walking along the interstate. once he got to the scene he placed the man in the back of the cruiser, and there was a struggle and gunfire. investigators have not said if the trooper was shot with his own gun. investigators are trying to figure out why the man was on the interstate in the first place. he has not been identified. i-95 was closed during the evening rush but re-opened. turning to the weather and a cold morning out there, we will have the weekend colder or about

the same, tom? >> it will be colder probably on sunday, and feeling like december now. this morning it was frosty cold. most locations were down in the 20s. we had a lot of frost around. right now, getting warmer. we're climbing in the 40s throughout much of the area. we have a southern you areally then the wind will change as we get into the evening hours and bring in more cold air. in the last few hours, we had a breeze. winds will shift and as a result will turn colder and we will have a mild afternoon comparatively into the low 50s, but still a chill in the air with the high clouds drifting in. and the winds will shift into the northwest this evening, and the evening forecast will be colder. if you have plans to head out this friday night, it should be mostly cloudy and temperatures in the 40s, and sunset around

4:46, and then midnight should be down around 40 degrees, and then colder on saturday morning. a look at the cold weather for the weekend, the big forecast for the army and navy game, we will look at that coming up. >> we will see you in a few minutes. right now we will get a check of midday traffic. danella, how is it looking? >> we are seeing a problem in silver spring if you are traveling northbound connecticut avenue at adams drive. the two right lanes are blocked there due to a water main break. traveling in virginia, this looks better. all day it was jammed on i-95, but we are clear as you make your way towards the beltway you are at 61 miles per hour, and not so bad. the trip on 395, towards the 14th street bridge, no issues there, and your travel speed is 47 miles per hour and to get to the beltway to the 14th street bridge, that trip will take you 14 minutes. d.c. police are

investigating a shooting near a metro station that sent one man to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. it happened yesterday afternoon near the anacostia metro station in the 1100 block of howard road southeast. nobody has been taken into custody. we are waiting to hear about the victim's identity. today a judge is expected to sentence the former elementary administrator that pleaded guilty to child pornography. joshua meyers was caught during an undercover operation in june. he was sharing files that contained child pornography. he was a former principal, and he faces five to 20 years in jail. our time is nine minutes after 11:00. coming up, the family of the retired fbi agent that vanished in iran released a hostage video they received from the man's unidentified captors, and what the family is now hoping for.

rescue workers smashed windowed to get to patients trapped inside. the fire started in the basement and spread to other sections. six hospital officials face charges for abandoning patients while the fire raged. the stealth drone could provide information to some of america's adversaries. even damaged parts from the downed drone could be used to speed up their technology. iran claims they shot down the drone, but experts believe the drone may have landed on its own, something it's programmed to do if it loses communication with its operator. and the family of a refired fbi agent that vanished eight years ago released a hostage video they received from the captors. he was working as a private investigator on an iranian

resort island. despite years of investigation, federal agents have been unable to determine who captured the 63-year-old and what their exact demands are. at the europe summit in brussels, the countries are moving forward with plans to join a new treaty that ties their economies closer together. they failed to get one european member, and that's britain, to join. a new treaty could take three months to negotiate and may require referendums in some countries. the ratings agency, moodies, downgraded. now to december 2012, the presidential candidates are focussing on iowa before tomorrow's debate.

newt gingrich is leading by almost 30 points in some polls. opponents are not stepping -- or they are stepping up personal attacks on the twice-divorced speaker of the house. meanwhile, only gingrich and santorum will participate in the debate moderated by donald trump. and the others have declined the so-called trump debate. there are concerns it would be a media circus and a distraction from important issues. tom is with us in the studio to talk about what is going on today and for the weekend. >> it's cold, and there's an old siberian saying that says it's not too cold, you are just not wearing enough coats. and for the next several days, it's december, deal with it.

we have cold weather here this morning. it was frosty cold, and we will climb into the low 50s. it's still chilly but it's the average high for this time of year. a light wind is coming out of the south, and right now around the region, out of the mountains, western maryland and west virginia, where they still have the snow on the ground from wednesday's storm, it's freezing. and most locations climbed into the low 40s to mid-40s closer to washington, and right now in the 40s in montgomery, and southern maryland, right around the bay and parts of the northern neck right around 50 degrees now. the overnight clouds have cleared out, and we had a few high clouds drifting over us a wider view showing some clouds closing in. that's a long a weak front producing a few flurries in ohio and indiana and lower great lakes earlier this morning, but

as it comes our way it will dry out. as we go forward in the next 48 hours, future weather showing clouds coming in, and tomorrow morning we ought to clear out and get plenty of sunshine during the day on saturday. and your outdoor activities should be a brisk and invigorating day, and sunday it should be cold. for the rest of the afternoon a. few high clouds coming in. it will be chilly. highs reaching upper 40s to low 50s with a southwesterly breeze, and then this evening, a cold evening, down to near 40 degrees by midnight and a northwesterly wind by then. and for the weekend, big games going on at fedex field. the army-navy game on saturday, and then skins on sunday. in the weekend in the mornings, it's going to be cold. near 30s.

and saturday morning, the low 20s in many areas. afternoon highs, low 40s. and monday, bright and sunny. we will be down in the mid-20s in the afternoon, and highs mid-40s. and a bit milder on tuesday and wednesday and clouds increase on thursday and might get rain on friday. now on wednesday when it was raining i travelled to prince william county and visited the signal hill school and talked to students there in manassas. we talked about tornados and hurricanes and blizzards, and thunderstorms and lightning. they learned about air pressure and learned about how the weather changes, and what it's like to have my job. i told them it's great having my job. it's a lot of fun and very interesting. they had very good questions about all different types of weather. had a wonderful time and i want

we will introduce you to different nonprofit groups in our area making a difference but need help and support to continue their good work. veronica johnson is live in arlington this morning to talk about the share the warmth coat drive. hi. >> reporter: that's right. i have been out here all morning long. folks have been dropping off their gently worn coats. we have gotten so many of them and hope to get more of them today, and as long as the coat drive is going on, we will be collecting up to december 23rd at most locations. and this is one big effort going on in the community, barbara, because as you know, there are so many people in need, and so many people that don't have a good coat to get through the cold. a lot of times, they could be people living down the street from you and in some instances, kids. we have the nurses of georgetown hospital, and the salvation army, and of course, right there, at nbc 4, we have a big phone bank that is set up, so you know, if you have a question

about this, and you are unsure, maybe you want to give to the salvation army in a different way, go ahead and call in and we will get all of your questions answers. standing here and also waiting out in the cold is terry cole, vice president of marketing, and steve morse who is here with the salvation army. you have been part of this for years. >> we have. >> you started the program? >> yes. 25 years, probably. the engagement with the partners that have come alongside is huge and the need is huge. so just be involved, be engaged and find a coat to give. >> you are there every year when these are handed out, which by the way these coats will be handed out on january 9th. tell me about some of the stories and how you determine who is in need. >> we have been taking applications for the christmas assistant since august, frankly, and the numbers are up about 20 or 30% in most of the communities in the region. a lot of those people actually have to really make hard

we have breaking news coming over to us. a fire in annapolis. what you are seeing is people outside the building who have been evacuated from the building. there are many fire trucks in the area. folks waiting to see if they are going to be allowed back in. we see no smoke coming from the building at this time. we will continue to follow the story and bring you more throughout the newscast. again, a fire in annapolis at a high-rise building. right now on "news4 midday," leslie johnson is in the prince georges' courthouse awaiting her sentence. the former county council member was found guilty of destroying evidence back in june for her role in her husband's corruption case. she faces up to 18 months in prison. we are waiting to find out the identity of the suspected gunman in the shooting of virginia tech and why he did it. authorities say somebody shot

and killed a campus police officer during a routine traffic stop. investigators say a separate man who was not affiliated with the stopped car was the gunman. he was found a short time later, shot to death in a separate parking lot. authorities confirm the gunman had in fact killed himself, and they are saying little about who he is. >> we are very confident we know who the individual is, however due to protocol, the medical examiner's office must make the positive identification and then we notify the next of kin and at that point we will be able to release his name. i can tell you at this point he is not a virginia tech student. >> final exams which were scheduled for today at virginia tech are now postponed. the victim is 39-year-old deriek crouse, an army veteran and

father of five. meanwhile, virginia governor, bob mcdonnell is commending the school for their response in the shooting. he released a statement that reads in part i have no doubt that the students, alaum umni a faculty will emerge stronger and more united than ever before. for the first time since former penn state coach, jerry sandusky, was arrested on sex abuse charges, his wife speaks out. she released a statement saying we don't know why these young men made the false accusations but we want everybody to know they are untrue. she continues by saying she continues to believe in jerry's innocence and all the good things he has done. one victim says he screamed for help knowing sandusky's wife was there but never came down to help. she denies a child was ever kept

in the basement. he was arrested on two sexual abuse charges. sandusky is due in court on charges that he sexually abused eight other boys. new surveillance video serviced in the dominique strauss-kahn case. the video was aired on television. it shows strauss-kahn leaving the hotel and then an accuser acts out the attack, and then a bizarre sequence of two employees hugging and dancing two minutes after reporting the assault to the police. they say there is proof there was a conspiracy to bring him down. d.c. mayor, vincent gray, says he has not been called

kickoff is tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. in news for your health this morning, stopping the spread of dangerous bacteria may starts with health workers. it's suggested more than 60% of health workers uniforms tested positive for infectious bacteria. the doctor joins us to talk about the dangers of the study and what it means for all of us. it's scary to think that people leave the hospital or wherever they work, doctor officers, with that much bacteria. >> 60% of the uniforms that they sampled had potentially infectious bacteria, so it could be strep, or e. coli, or mrsa, which is the flesh-eating bacteria that is so dread and dangerous. >> now, if they are -- if other people are around them, what are

the chances that they -- that those bacteria could affect them? >> this is how it is spread. there's bacteria that only exists in the hospital and are there because they have been bread and they are resistant to anti-biotics, and they are dangerous because regular antibiotics don't treat them, and how are they spread? not washing their hands, or their garment touching other patients. >> if they go to the store or to their own family, the chances are would they have to touch the person's uniform to be exposed to the bacteria? >> exactly. that's why it is so important, routine hand washing, every patient, every visitor, should go through this. in hospitals they have it at every elevator and stand and it's important and it works. >> i just heard the other night from somebody that there are some doctors, now, even after

very serious surgeries invite their patients to leave the hospital and go to a hotel to recuperate, and is that because of the spread of the dangerous bacteri bacter bacteria? >> outpatient centers sometimes and hotels are not going to be as commonplace for the bacteria. >> talk about the mrsa, what is that and where does it come from? >> it's a staph infection. it could be very serious, and it can destroy soft tissue and lead to death because routine anti-biotics that we use in hospital settings are not affective because they are resistant to them. >> so mrsa is resistant -- >> yes, to bacteria. and some people, for instance, for hip and knee replacement,

they culture the patient's own nose, and you have to find it out in advance if you are a carrier. >> what are you doing if they are bringing it into the hospital? >> there are anti-biotics that do affect these, but first you have to have a culture and know the specific anti- bb antibioti that will be effective. make sure your friends, family and doctors are using routine hand care. make sure that patients -- you are taking your anti-biotics, and if you have animals they are not kissing your face after a face-lift. >> they can carry it, too? >> yes. >> and your doctor walking in, ask them if you have washed your

stock prices are starting the day much higher. let's check in with cnbc's mary thompson. good morning. >> good morning to you, barbara. stocks, as you mentioned, are higher today. and a positive report on consumer confidence here in the u.s. today's midday gains come despite profit warnings. and the industrial average is up about 52 points, and the nasdaq up by 32 points and the s&p up by 19. investors are reacting favorably to a bailout fund, and a new agreement at the summit. the university of michigan is stronger than expected on consumer confidence for the month of december, but it's not
