jim handly and pat lawson muse are both off tonight. dashcam confirmed what authorities thought about the man who shot and killed the university police officer before taking his own life. we have the latest on this investigation. >> reporter: virginia state police say it looks like thursday's deadly shooting was a murder suicide. the same gun used to kill campus police officer was found beside the body of a man suspected of a self-inflicted gunshot. they don't know why the officer was targeted. >> it's very much the fundamental part of the investigation now. >> reporter: thursday, during a traffic stop he made on campus that a man walked up and shot the decorated officer as he sat in his patrol car. dashcam video showed him on tape. >> he ran to the greenhouses

where he changed clothes, taking off a pull over top and wool cap and put them in the backpack where he left at the greenhouses. >> the dead suspected killer was found after that. he was not a virginia tech student. while they investigate his motives, the school is mourning the loss of the officer with another vigil set to take place. the scene on virginia tech's campus thursday was eerily similar to what happened four years ago. again, a university lockdown was ordered on thursday within minutes. >> former prince county leslie

johnson learned her sentence. a year in prison followed by two years supervised release and to p perform 240 hours of community service and pay a $15,000 fine. the wife of jack johnson pleaded guilty to evidence tampering. megan mcgrath has more on the investigation against her. >> reporter: leslie johnson was arrested along with her husband, jack johnson weeks before he was due to take the oath of office and claim a seat on the county council. leslie johnson took the oath and began to serve on the council. as the evidence mounted, she pleaded guilty and eventually resigned from the council. key to the government's case against her, a taped telephone conversation between her and her husband as fbi agents pounded on the door of their home. he tells her to rip up a check for $100,000.

she can be heard flushing it down the toilet. >> yeah, flush that. >> reporter: in the conversation, leslie johnson then asks what she should do about the cash. >> what do you want me to do with this money? they are banging. >> put it in your panties and walk out of the house. >> reporter: when searched by the fbi, she was found to have nearly $80,000 stuffed in her bra. megan mcgrath, news 4. coming up on news 4 at 5:00, chris gordon reports on the apology she made today in court and reaction to supporters of a sentence to a year and a day in federal prison. a school administrator who received child pornography was sentenced today. he'll spend five years in prison along with five years of supervised release. that was the mandatory minimum

sentence. he was a principal in virginia. he was caught in june in an undercover operation. during a search of his home, he was sharing files that contained child pornography. a woman accused of attacking shoppers inside a walmart on black friday will not face charges. this was the scene. there's no evidence the woman committed a felony. this case was referred to the city attorney's office. she could face misdemeanor charges if they find she used it to grab video games from other shoppers. 20 people including children suffered nose and throat irritation during the attack. jerry sandusky spent a full day under house arrest. the legal team is hearing of more abuse. sandusky's wife knew of at least one incident and did nothing to

stop it. jay gray has the latest from state college, pennsylvania. >> we are getting a better idea of jerry sandusky's reaction to court ordered confinement. >> he's depressed. how can you not be depressed. even if a trial winds up in an acquittal, he'll never be the same. >> reporter: they spent more than an hour preparing for the first hearing in the case on tuesday. >> he's not looking forward to this. this is going to be a one-sided proceeding. this is a proceeding where the commonwealth is going to call witnesses or say all these things happened. >> reporter: the family is dealing with accusations that his wife, dotty heard an attack in the basement and screams of help and did nothing. >> if a child was screaming in her home, she would have heard it and responded. >> reporter: to this point, grand jury reports of ten

accusers in the case. chuck schmidt says he talked to one more. >> he was a participant in the second mile program in 2004. >> reporter: during an interview on msnbc says his client, now 19 was given alcohol and abused on penn state campus. >> he was given a glass of whiskey, which he was asked to consume and there after, mr. sandusky performed a sexual act on him. >> the actions didn't occur. >> he wasn't asked about the allegations but said it would not surprise him if the list of accusers come forward. >> i can think of a million reasons and penn state has unlimited resources. why do people lie? >> reporter: one of so many questions along with the concern

and controversy that lingers here. jay gray, nbc news, state college, pennsylvania. 128,000 ford cars are being recalled because wheels can fall off. it affects the 2010-2011 mercury sedans with 17 inch wheels. federal regulators say the bolds can break. it starts as an annoying vibration. if left uncheck, the wheels can separate from the car. dealers will replace all lug nuts and check the brakes. no crashes or injuries have been reported. there is a chill in the air. it's been there all morning. >> yes. the last couple days. meteorologist veronica johnson is up in the storm center 4 to tell us what our weekend is going to bring us. >> cold. how about the coldest air of the season? how about the coldest air, guys, since february? last february. >> we know. we don't want that.

it's going to be a chilly night. a chilly, if not cold start to the day tomorrow. 42 degrees by 11:00. then down into the 30s. 36, 37 degrees early tomorrow morning. other locations starting out lower than that. here is a look at the satellite review. there are the clouds, pittsburgh to columbus. snow is falling around akron, ohio. the cold moves in. temperatures tonight down into the 30s and low 40s tomorrow. back down to freezing. up to 40 degrees on sunday. again, a cold weekend for us. here is the front that comes through. a few clouds for tomorrow morning, then high elevation snow. sunshine for the weekend. so, good weekend, at least to bundle up if you want to get out. i'm calling it a quiet chill for sunday. we are not going to have much wind around the area. skies turning chilly, 42 to 47 is the temperature range. tomorrow morning, between 27 and 36. so, very cold start for us.

student and has no connection to the school. but, they don't know why the suspect targeted officer deriek crouse. leslie johnson was sentenced for her role in a federal corruption case. a judge ordered her to spend one year and one day in jail and two years probation. she has to serve community service and pay a 15, 000 fine. jerry sandusky spent the first day of in-house arrest. he spent an hour preparing for his case on tuesday. there are ten accusers and could be more. the week ended on a high note on wall street. the dow finished up 188 points

ending at 12,841. nasdaq gained 50 points to end at 2646. the s&p up 20 points closing at 1255. we have an update on lauren scruggs who walked into a moving propeller of a moving airplane. in an instant, she suffered life changing injuries. as janet reports, her parents say she has given them reason for hope. >> reporter: 30. that was the word she spoke as she took her first steps after the devastating propeller accident. >> we were thinking what does that mean? she said i walked 30 steps. >> reporter: 30 steps on what could be a long road to recovery. her parents said their daughter doesn't remember the accident. >> she was in a bad accident, but don't know. she can't remember any detail of it at all. >> reporter: last saturday

night, she boarded a private plane look at christmas lights from the air. the 23-year-old climbed out of the single engine, two-seater plane when she walked into the still spinning propeller. >> it was dark. we were thinking she came back to thank the pilot. she didn't see the propeller was winding down. >> reporter: her family says it was an accident. they don't blame the pilot who has yet to comment on the incident. a part-time model and fashion blogger she suffered critical injuries including a severed hand and the possibility of losing her left eye. >> she's excelling in the physical and occupational therapy. it's a concern of the cognitive therapy. >> reporter: despite the challenges, lauren is already showing signs of her old self. >> she's got her personality

ex-fiance, dale smith. he denies any wrong doing. a fire has killed 89 people and injured several others at a hospital in india. rescue workers smashed windows to get to the patients trapped inside. the fire started in the base. and spread. six officials faced charges for abandoning patients while the fire raged. new surveillance video of dominique strauss-kahn. he paid his bill and hopped into a cab. the maid appears to be acting out the attack. there's a sequence of them hugging and dancing two minutes after reporting the assault to police. strauss-kahn's lawyer says there was a conspiracy to bring him

she has a bunch of pine try branches. can you make them last through the holiday season? >> your house is covered. we went to johnson's florist to get your answer. treat them like any cut flower. change the water frequently. cut the stems and use flower preserve sieves to make the branches last longer. the branches like to be kept in cool areas. keep them out of direct sunlight and they should last the season. alyssa from centerville writes, if she can hang christmas lights on artificial trees made of metal. >> we did contact the safety commission for the answer. they say it's best not to use them on a metal christmas tree. if you do, you need a ground fault circuit interrupter. it can prevent e electricution.

are talking about their loss. savannah guthrie has the story. >> good morning everybody. >> good morning. >> reporter: just one month ago, michelle and jim duggar appeared on "today" to share the news. >> you have a big announcement this morning. >> yes, we are excited. we are expecting our 20th child. >> reporter: thursday was supposed to be a good day. michelle, in her second trimester headed to the doctor to find out the the section of the child. instead, the doctor was unable to find a heart beat and told the couple the bad news, that michelle miscarried. michelle spoke of returning home to tell her children. she said, we had just been talking about baby names last night and getting excited about naming a boy or girl. it's been a sad disappointment. she went on to say, i feel like

my heart broke telling my children. they have all been so excited about this baby and having a new little one in our arms. that was the most difficult. thursday night, jim bob released a statement thanking fans for their support. he wrote, we would like to thank everyone for their prayers, e-mails and out pouring of love. we are grieving. god promises to work all things for good in our lives. this is the second miscarriage for the 45-year-old mother of 19. she suffered during her last pregnancy in 2009. the most recent announcement sparked a passionate response over the internet. >> why isn't 19 enough for you? >> there's always room for one more. they are such a gift. >> a gift they don't take for granted. >> the precious life that we see here is not a coincidence.
