>> it's not like he was walking through the parking lot. it was his actions walking through. looking around. those kind of actions that caught his attention. >> police say the gun they found near the assa assailant was the gun used to kill officer crouse. he was ambushed. he was sitting in his cruiser after making a traffic stop. that's when the shooter approached and shot him dead. the officer did not return fire. the cruiser did have a dashcam. >> the video captured a male suspect with a handgun at the officers car at the time of the shooting. >> he may have stolen a car and used a campus shuttle. they are trying to figure out why he shot the officer and if there was prior contact between

the two. >> we have no connection that they knew one another or encountered one another prior to the shooting. >> police releas the name of the suspect. it's ross ashley, a 22-year-old student 15 minutes away from the virginia tech campus. a vigil is being held on virginia tech campus to deal with the tragedy on campus. back to you. >> darcy spencer reporting, thank you. tonight, tributes tonight to pour in for the officer. the 39-year-old was an army veteran and married fatter of five. he joined the police force in 2007. after that, he worked in a jail and for the sheriff's department in virginia. he received an award for his commitment to the department's drunk-driving efforts. leslie johnson, today, was

sentenced to one year and a day in prison for tampering with evidence in a corruption case. her husband was sentenced to seven years in prison earlier this week. today, mrs. johnson told the judge she didn't know about her husband's criminal activity. chris gordon has the report. >> reporter: leslie johnson came to court seeking probation rather than a prison sentence. she told the judge i am sorry and ashamed of my conduct on november 12, 2010. i take full responsibility for my actions that day and sincerely regret the impact it's had on my family and the community. >> there's a little box and in the box there's a check. tear it up or chew it up. >> reporter: she panicked trying to help her husband without thinking. destroying a check for $100,000 and trying to conceal $79,600 in her underwear. she called it a single act

asking for probation saying i did not know anything about the criminal conduct that my husband engaged in prior to november 12, 2010. the federal judge believes mrs. johnson knew that she was dealing with tainted money and that she tried to conceal it. with that, he sentenced her to 12 months and a day, making her eligible for release in ten months. mrs. johnson had many supporters at the courthouse. >> there was no evidence that was provided that she knew about her husband's illegal activities. nevertheless, she has the punishment. >> reporter: it continues. i asked what that could mean. >> obviously, cooperation by jack johnson means there's a potential there could be other cases coming and certainly an ongoing investigation. we have to wait and see. >> reporter: the judge ordered leslie johnson to turn herself

in march 9th, a month after her husband starts his prison term. her lawyer asked that she serve at the federal prison in the foothills of the allegheny mountains of west virginia. at the federal courthouse in maryland, i'm chris gordon, news 4. >> they issued a statement that read the sentencing of jack and leslie johnson marks a significant step in the judicial process and hopefully a final resolution of this matter. >> there are three and a half weeks before the iowa caucuses. voters will be distracted during the holidays. this is crunch time for the republican presidential candidates. newt gingrich is leading in the polls. mitt romney and supporters are going after him and going negative. brian mooar reports. >> reporter: fighting to stop his slide in the polls, mitt romney visited iowa for the first time in the campaign. he brought out the big guns, his

differentiation. they want to hear from the candidates. >> reporter: today, he had to cancel a book signing at union station out of concerns the crowd would be too big. on capitol hill, brian mooar, news 4. >> it will be held january 3rd. one debate is tomorrow in des moines. the last one before it will take place thursday in sioux city, iowa. an assistant principal sent to prison for child porn. he was given the minimum sentence allowed under federal law. it's less than what prosecutors wanted. they were pushing for a sentence of 13 to 16 years. he was an assistant principal at the greenville elementary school in virginia. he was arrested in june after

officers caught him trading child porn over the internet. jerry sandusky spent his first day under house arrest. the legal team hears of more allegations of abuse. tonight the family is responding to accusations that sandusky's wife knew about at least one of the attacks and did nothing to stop it. jay gray has the latest from state college, pennsylvania. >> reporter: we are getting a better idea today of jerry sandusky's reaction to his first full day of court ordered confinement. >> he's depressed. how can you not be depressed. even if a trial down the road winds up in acquittal, he'll never be the same. >> reporter: sandusky's attorney spent more than an hour prepare ing for the first hearing in the case on tuesday. >> he's not looking forward to this. this is going to be a one-sided proceeding. this is going to be a proceeding where they are going to call

witnesses who say all these horrific things happened. >> reporter: the family is dealing with accusations that dottie heard an attack in their basement and screams for help and did nothing. >> if a child was screaming in her home, it wouldn't matter what time of day or night it was. she would have heard it and responded. >> reporter: at this point, there are ten accusers in the case. he's talked to at least one more. >> he was a participant in the second mile program in 2004. >> reporter: during an interview, schmidt said his client was given alcohol and abused on a penn state campus seven yeefr years ago. >> he was given a glass of whiskey, which he was asked to consume. there after, mr. sandusky performed a sexual act on him. >> it didn't occur. >> reporter: they said it would

robert is a retired fbi agent from florida who vanished nearly five years ago in iran. now, his family is releasing proof he is being held hostage. he was working at a private investigator when he went to an island in iran back in 2007. he was on a case for a corporate client. after one night, he checked out of his hotel and vanished. today, his family released a video they received in an e-mail a year ago.

>> please help me get home. 33 years of service to the united states deserves something. please help me. >> the kidnappers e-mailed and demanded the release of several prisoners. the u.s. officials say those prisoners don't exist. earlier this year, secretary of state, hillary clinton appealed to help find him. now they say diplomatic efforts to bring him home stalled. she released a video in hopes of moving things along. they are analyzing the intelligence losses from the stealth drone that fell into iran's hands. iranian officials claim they shot it down last week. there's no visible damage to the drone in the video. the under side of the aircraft is never shown. defense experts say the drone

has highly advanced radar technology of great interest to potential add va sars to the u.s. a news agency is reporting officials in russia and china requested permission to inspect the drone. russia is bracing for a day of demonstrations tomorrow. tens of thousands of protesters expected to gather in moscow to rally against the alleged fraud by prime minister vladimir putin's party. this is following elections from last week. stephanie gosk has the report. >> reporter: opposition leaders are calling for new elections as well as the release of political prisoners on the eve of what could be the largest political demonstration they have seen in 20 years. they have more than 35,000 people that are going to participate. not just in moscow, but across

area, gaithersburg, 43 degrees. ma nas nassas 37. we are going to see the numbers for the most part in the upper 20s to 30s during the night tonight. we are not going to see rain. we have a cold front moving through portions of ohio, bringing cleveland snow, parts of ohio and pennsylvania, they are going to get snow from this. as it crosses over the mountains, it's going to lose the moisture and bring us cloud cover overnight tonight. tomorrow, well tomorrow brings in the colder air. we saw nice weather ahead of it. here is the cold front to the west. plenty of sunshine with temperatures in the low 50s. as a front moves to the south, we are going to see sunshine tomorrow after the clouds move out of here tomorrow morning. it is going to get on the chilly side. we are talking temperatures that will move from 51 today down to

some new surveillance video surfaced of dominique strauss kahn minutes after he sexually assaulted a maid in manhattan. it shows strauss-kahn paying his bill, the accuser, a hotel maid appears to be acting out the attack. there's then a bizarre sequence of two hotel employees hugging and dancing after reporting the assault to police. strauss kahn's lawyer says this is proof there was a conspiracy to bring him down. it was dismissed because of a lack of evidence. lauren scruggs is a model from texas who accidentally walked into the still spinning

propeller of an airplane last week. her injuries are severe. her family says she is making progress. she's taken her first steps since the accident. her parents say she does not remember the incident but understands she was seriously injured. they say she's already showing signs of her old self, especially after she used a mirror to look at her face. >> she looked and said it's not that bad. that was encouraging. she still has her beautiful smile. >> she was critically injured after getting off the small plane at night in the dark in dallas, texas. her parents believe she turned around to thank the pilot and walked into the still spinning propeller. her hand was severed. the family remains optimistic about her recovery. still ahead, four people arrested in a car rim theft ring in the area. how the crime was uncovered.

the virginia state police released the name of the man they say shot a virginia tech police officer before he killed himself. they say the man was ross ashley, 22 years old. he is the man who killed officer

deriek crouse. he lived in radford at the time and was a part time student at radford university. he had no prior connection to the officer. he acted alone. the motive for the shooting, still a mystery. former prince george's commissioner was arrested for her role in a corruption case. a judge ordered her to serve one year and one day in prison. she benefitted from the financial crimes of her husband. today in court, she apologized and took full responsibility for her actions. >> the republican presidential candidates are campaigning in iowa now. they are getting ready for a debate tomorrow night in des moines. one final debate will be held in sioux city, iowa next week. then the republicans will cast their first votes for their presidential nominee on january 3rd. a warning about an elaborate

car rim theft ring. >> four guys are responsible for stealing not just rims, but whole wheels off high-end vehicles. pat collins tells us how they are pulling it off. >> reporter: prince george's county police cracked a stolen rim ring that targets high dollar trucks and suvs.enalis a. they are responsible for hundreds of rim thefts in and around the area. the cops seized a number of the stolen rims and tires. they are running out of places to put them. they are keeping them in the bosses office. one, two, three, four sets. they have them in the lunchroom. not in there. under the copier. they had to move a sergeant out of his office. why? storage. so how did they steal these rims so fast? well, they say it was a two-step

lug locks. if you do, don't keep the key in the glove come partment. mark your rims, they don't have vin numbers. i'm pat collins, news 4, prince george's county. tonight d.c. police continue to search for a suspect who shot a man near the metro station yesterday. it happened after 4:00 yesterday afternoon in the 1100 block of howard road. there's no word on what sparked the shooting. nobody is in custody, yet. the victim went to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. a man who shot a virginia state trooper yesterday has died. 32-year-old herbert wheeler was found walking on the side of i-95 yesterday. he was wanted for reckless driving. when the state trooper tried to get him into the cruiser, he went for the gun and managed to

fire it. wheeler was shot with another gun. he died this morning at mary washington hospital. the trooper is expected to make a full recovery. police are looking for the guy who sexually assaulted a woman in alexandria, virginia. it happened after 9:00 last night near maybe l avenue. the woman was walking home from work when the man grabbed her. the woman screamed. the suspect ran off. they are not sure if it's related to a jogger last month. the largest business group says it's time to shut down the occupy d.c. encampment. they say the protests are hurting business and tourism here and creating what he called a toxic waste dump. tom sherwood has more on the growing backlash. >> reporter: for more than a month, protesters challenging economic disparity set up a peaceful camp at mcpherson

square. clash with d.c. police wednesday, blocking rush hour traffic. 60 people were arrested. sunday, u.s. park police arrested demonstrators after construction of an illegal housing frame in the square. some are urging city and federal officials to shut down the camp sights for health, safety and commerce reasons. on wamu politics hour friday -- >> there's not a city in the country, except the washington, d.c. area that accommodated them. we are a flash point of trouble. mcfepherson square will be a toc waste dump for a couple years to clean it up. >> reporter: the mayor told nbc 4 on the viewpoint program that airs sunday morning people are losing patience. >> people are increasingly losing their patience because of the infringement on business. it's a balance.

looking at a nice afternoon today. don't expect to see the 50s this week, it's on the cold side. current temperature sitting at 47. 39 in leesburg. 36 in culpeper. gaithersburg coming in at 39 degrees. frederick, you are the cool spot sitting at 34. the warm spot on the other side of the chesapeake coming in at 50. right now, storm 4 doppler radar not showing anything. to the north and west is the cold front that continues to move to the south. it's a weak cold front. i's not giving rain or snow. for us it's going to usher in cooler air. 32 in leesburg. 30 in culpeper around 29 toward frederick. some areas colder than that tomorrow morning. it's going to be on the chilly side. a bit of a wind. it could put the windchills in the lower 20s. watch out for that.

special tribute to fallen troops today. wreaths for america placed wreaths at the u.s. naval academy and the world war ii memorial in annapolis. they head to arlington cemetery where more than 100,000 wreaths will be laid on the tombstones. more than 15,000 volunteers helped to make the wreaths. international businessman, very well known, joe robert died yesterday. he lost his battle with brain cancer. he grew up here in the
