college. i'm jim vance. >> and i'm doreen gentzler. >> students remembered the police officer who was shot and killed on campus yesterday with a individualle. the suspect is from spotsylvania county. we went to the place where he attended high school and learned more about the shooter. >> reporter: at spots videotape yeah high school where ross ashley graduated in 2007 he was a strong student with a promising future. but tonight this community is coming to grips with news that he is the young man who killed a virginia tech police officer. not far from the high school in a rural area called partlow, the large home where ross ashley once lived with his parents was dark. the family kept to themselves and she said ashley was standoffish. >> they stay off to themselves. like i said we live on this

road. and the people on that end are a little outgoing and visiting and stuff like that. so it's sad. >> reporter: but during high school ross ashley made a name for himself on the football field as this newspaper account shows and he won scholarships to a half dozen colleges. most recently he was a part-time student at radford university. it was in radford a day before the shooting that ashley committed his first crime. he entered a real estate office and demanded a key to a vehicle. the suv was dumped at virginia tech the next day. investigators say after that ross walked up to deriek crouse as he sat in his patrol car and shot the father of five to death. about 30 minutes later ross ashley was dead too. he changed his clothes but when

an officer eyed him with suspicion he shot himself. investigators are looking for a motive and trying to determine if there was prior contact between the two. >> at the time we have no connection between the two of them that they knew each other. >> reporter: the state police continue their investigation at spotsylvania high. teachers and friends in the community will be waiting for answers. julie carey, news4. >> investigators don't know why ashley killed that officer. radford university said that the entire radford university community sends heart felt condolences to everyone impacted by this strategy. a student from maryland was shot and killed last night. the baltimore city police found brandon hudson dead inside his apartment. neighbors said they heard strange noises coming from the

apartment earlier in the evening. hudson had no criminal record. former prince george's county council member leslie johnson will serve prison time for her role in a federal corruption case. a judge sentenced her to a year and one day and two years probation. she stuffed $80,000 in her underwear when the fbi showed up at her house. johnson said i'm extremely sorry for and ashame of my conduct. a judge denied her question for lean yen say saying that johnson with u.s. not an innocent spouse. leslie johnson must report to jail on march 9th. earlier this week jack johnson was sentenced to seven years in prison for taking bribes. a pair of dogs is running loose in a local park lately. the actions against the local wildlife has the u.s. park service taking notice as derick

ward reports. >> reporter: the river runs fast and high in maryland. the players in this life or death struggle appear to be house pets but their wild sides come out in this setting. >> it is becoming a game for them. >> reporter: a week ago the dogs in these photos paired up on one of the residents of the park. >> they attacked last friday that we know about. we were able to get the dogs off the deer. we think the deer survived. >> reporter: a week later they were stalking the woods again. their prey, two deer. >> the dogs pinned a deer into a creek and we were able to get the deer out and catch one of the dogs but the deer didn't make it. >> iter the dog that got away stay on the hunt. >> reporter: chased a deer into the river and with the potomac

up so high the deer didn't make it. >> reporter: you might say this is nature taking its course, dogs being dogs. but the ranger says is it no that simple. amid concerns that the deer population is unmanageable, this, says the ranger is not the way to do it. >> what i saw today was not a humane way to do it. >> reporter: there are rules that the park service takes seriously about having dogs on leashes enunder control in a park like this. >> we had a dog that bit a visitor last week that literally the dog was leashed but was not under control. >> reporter: it's about safety for the park patrons, other dogs and the deer. >> fines for off leash dogs in national parks ranges from 25 to $1,000 and can carry up to six months in jail. an organization called wreaths for america placed wreaths today at the u.s. naval

academy and the world war ii memorial in annapolis. the group will go to arlington national cemetery tomorrow where more than 100,000 wreaths will be laid on the tombstones there. this is the 20th year of that event. more than 15,000 volunteers helped make the wreaths. a former assistant principal will spend five years in prison for receiving child porn. he got the minimum sentence allowed under federal law. it is less that what prosecutors requested. he was an assistant principal at greenville elementary school in virginia he was arrested in june after being caught trading child porn over the internet. ling police in prince george's county arrested a number of guys for stealing wheels. four men accused of stealing hundreds of wheels from high-priced suvs. the police have been storing the wheels all over the police

philadelphia. that is not going to be where the numbers will be tomorrow night. a very cold weekend setting up. i'll show you how cool things will get coming up in my forecast. some business leaders in the washington area are pushing to have the occupy d.c. camps in mcphearson square shut down. board of trade president says that the protesters are hurting business and tourism. but he says the biggest concerns are health and safety. >> there's not a city in the country accept for the washington, d.c. area that has accommodated these protesters to this extent. we are a flash point away from trouble. mcphearson square will be a toxic waste dump for a couple of years to clean it up. >> he was talking on a radio show this afternoon at wamu. about 60 protesters were arrested on wednesday after blocking rush hour traffic. vincent grey supports

protesters' rights but not tolerate anyone breaking the law. donald trump may have to scrub plans for a presidential debate in iowa. only two have planned to attend. trump said he was disappointed in the candidates decisions not to attend. he says he hasn't ruled out an independent white house run himself. a third and fourth grade montessori teacher in washington is this year's teacher of the year in the district. known by her students as mrs. brown got a visit from top school officials today. she has been selected as this year's teacher of the year. her colleagues and parents say she is a pro at using hands-on projects to make subjects fun and interesting. >> it's humbling.

it's very humbling. i do what i do not to win awards but for the love of the children. >> she has been teaching in the district for 17 years now all nine of her children also attend d.c. public schools. looks like marion barry's life story could be told on tv. spike lee and eddie murphy are teaming up. eddie murray will play barry. the film will try to uncover why he was so beloved. the film makers are consulting dream city a book about d.c.'s history. one of the authors of the book is tom sherwood. people who think micro chipping their pet always works might want to reconsider that. why veterinarians are warning about potential problems.

a lot of people think if they put a micro chip in their pet and the pet goes missing they have nothing to worry about. a local family thought they were protected. but we show you why veterinarians are warning about the problems associated with micro chips.

>> brandy crowley said that the moment that her kids saw zoe it was love at first sight. >> she would sit on our laps and run off a ball. >> reporter: zoe came with a micro chip injected under the pet's skin that contains the owner's contact information. >> she said all we would have to do is wait for whoever find her to take her to a shelter. and the shelter would notify us. >> reporter: but the phone call never came. >> we scanned for a micro chip and the only information on the chip at the time was the pet store where the dog was purchased. >> reporter: stephanie shane says that the shelter tried to locate zoe's owner. we checked with the micro chip company and were given information with a phone number. we tried the number and it was a wrong number.

>> reporter: we discovered that is not unusual. a study out of ohio state university found out of 53 shelters in the country, 35% of micro chipped animals had an incorrect number. 24% were registered to a former owner. >> a chip that is unregistered might as well be put in the garbage. >> reporter: dr. michael moyer is the president of the american animal hospital association and even if there is a micro chip there cobe problems. >> there this is a scanner used to find the micro chips. but this is one. and there are three more kinds on top of these two. >> reporter: and most shelters can't afford multiple scanners. with when they are found is it be hard. >> no tag found, try again.

>> reporter: the chips are supposed to be in between the shoulder blades. >> people pick up skin and inject on top but dragged kin from further down. so one should scan from a generous area. >> reporter: zoe's chip was easy to find. she was eventually put to sleep leaving brandy the impossible job of telling her kids that their family pet can no longer come home. i wish i didn't know what happened to her. the american animal hospital association says all pet owners should check to make sure that the micro chip information is updated. we posted a link to their website that lets you type in your micro chip number and link to the company with which is it registered. so you can then call or update your information online. you can find that link on our

website, www.nbcwashington.com. the keyword is micro chip. at & t has an automatic texting policy after the old policy wrecked a christmas surprise. they told the score clerk that the phones were crist mats presents but the next day at & t sent text messages to their children asking how they liked their new phones. when the nbc station contacted the company the company apologized and says that they will no longer send out the surveys in the weeks leading up to christmas. the best of the best had their hands full with waves that rolled into -- this is the coast of hawaii today. these are 18 to 20-foot monsters. they showed up at the banzai pipeline. they arrived just in time for start of something called the

all day long on december 9th. you want to hear good news? i don't see that happening any time in the near forecast or the extended forecast. i don't see cold air for the next week to upwards of two weeks. but we get cooler for the next couple days. right now 41 degrees still above average. the winds are calm and we will see calm winds. 32 in gaithersburg. 28 in frederick. 37 in martens burg. 34 in culpepper and 48 along the bay. so we are going to be on the warm side tonight in some areas. no rain to show you right now. but there is a frontal boundary to the north and west. the moisture is drying up here. that's what it is going to do as the front makes its way across the area. is it not bringing rain or snow but it is bringing in cooler air. how much cooler?

41 in washington. 18 in chicago right now. 26 in st. louis. 10 in home ha, nebraska. that is the cold air makes its way in here. and we will see the coldest night so far this season tomorrow night once the front moves through. nice tonight. tomorrow night in the morning we're okay and the front moves through and the sun returns but the chilly air mass comes in too. temperatures in the low 40s with a northwest wind of 10 to 15 miles per hour. that keeps the wind chills in the upper 30s. on sunday, a very cold start tomorrow night one of the coldest nights we've seen. and sunday it is not going to rebound much. high clouds a cold start with a chilly breeze. the wind chills in the 20s tomorrow morning be. tomorrow afternoon we warm up into the upper 30s.
