gunmen killed a police officer and himself on campus. >> well last night students gathered to remember that officer at a vigil. police identified the gunman as 22-year-old ross ashley. he went to radford university and once made the dean's list. news 4 visited his home. we had a little trouble with that package. but radford university did release a statement saying, quote, the entire radford university community is very sor

reand sends its heartfelt condolences to everyone impacted by this tragedy. >> we now have that story. >> reporter: not far from the high school in a rural area, the large home where ross ashley once lived with his parents was dark. this neighbor says the family seemed to keep to themselves and she described ashley as standoffish. >> they stay off to themselves. like i said, we live on this road and the people on that end are a little outgoing and visiting and stuff like that. so, it's sad. >> reporter: but during high school ross ashley made a name for himself on the football field as this newspaper account shows and he won scholarships for his academics to a half dozen colleges. most recently ashley was a part time student at radford university. investigators say it was in radford a day before the virginia tech shooting that ashley committed his first crime. armed with a handgun he entered a radford real estate office and

demanded a key to the vehicle. the 2011 mercedes suv was found dumped at virginia tech the next day. investigators say after that, ross walked up to officer derek kraus as he sat in his unmarked patrol car and shot the father of five to death. the shoogt was captured on the patrol car video. about 30 minutes later, ross ashley was dead, too. he changed his clothes to try to escape the manhunt, but police say when an officer eyed him with suspicion, he shot himself. investigators are still looking for a motive and trying to determine if there was any prior contact between ashley and officer kraus. >> at this time we have no connection between the two of them that they knew one another. >> reporter: as state police continue their investigation, teachers, students who went to school with ross ashley and friends in the community will be waiting for answers. >> band act on the virginia tech campus, thousands of people filled the drill field for a

candlelight vigil last night to remember kraus, the vigil included a moment of silence. two trumpeters station aid cross the field from each other played echo taps as students raised their candles. studented chanted let's go hokeys before leaving the vigil. a virginia tech student organized a memorial fund for the family of officer derek kraus. those wishing to contribute can mail checks to the fund. so far more than $34,000 has been donated. plaejs of condolences can be emailed to police. a one year and da day prison sentence will begin in march for former prince george's county member angie johnson for her role in a federal corruption case. a judge ordered her to serve two

years probation. leslie johnson admitted to flushing a $100,000 check from a developer and hiding $80,000 in her underwear when fbi agents showed up after their house. johnson said quote, i am extremely sorry for and ashamed of my conduct. she denied knowing anything about her husband's bribing developers. a judge denied her request for leniency saying she was not an innocent spouse. >> there was no evidence that was provided that she actually knew about her husband's illegal activities. nevertheless, she has the punishment and we know that she had to have some kind of punishment for what she did. >> leslie johnson was ordered to report to jail march 9th. earlier this week her husband the former county executive jack johnson was snensed to seven years, three months in prison for taking bribes. it looks like there is no way around it, this saturday we are stuck in the 40s. >> it's going to be a chilly weekend out there, but it's going to be dry.

street. there's no word on the victim's condition. we're working to find out more about the shooting and we will bring you more information as we find it out. baltimore police are looking for the person who killed a morgan state university student. investigators say someone shot and killed 22-year-old brandon hudson. officers found his body inside his off campus apartment thursday night. hudson was a senior marketing major from clinton, maryland, neighbors told police they heard strange noises coming from his apartment early in the evening. police say hudson had no criminal record, but they are looking into whether the crime was drug related. fwhont gomry county police are investigating a deadly accident involving a pd and a ride on bus. a 63-year-old woman was trying to cross rockville pike thursday evening. police say the bus hit the woman when the driver tried turn right from alpine road. the woman was take on the the

states attorney. it began as one of the most violent year in the county's history. it's also been a productive year launching a number of initiatives. she's here to recap 2011 and look ahead. thank you for being with us. >> thank you for having me. >> in january last year it seemed we had a murder a day, how'd you cap that? >> it was a challenging year. what we did was we collaborated. we had a wonderful -- this has been a year of challenges and opportunities. a great challenge with 16 murders in january, one per day for the first 12 days and what we did was really roll our sleeves up to collaborate with the police and all of law enforcement. i think that the police deserve a lot of credit for what they've done to turn around what started out as a horrible start. >> one of the reasons you're here, one of the push you want to make is the resource ifs your office you have fewer prosecutors than baltimore which has 220, you have about 80. your prosecutors are paid about 20% less. >> the resource issue really is a major challenge.

i don't think people have any idea of the volume, the sheer volume 40,000 cases. my prosecutors handle approximately 533 cases per prosecutor. if we just look at washington, d.c. for example their prosecutors handle about 57 cases per prosecutor. so the volume is tremendous. the prosecutors are paid less. and this is really something that i worked all year to bring attention to. >> among your initiatives the special prosecutions unit and police brutality is included in that. i remember in september you had a grand jury indictment of two police officers with regard to that 2010 interaction between college park students and two officers were charged with assault and misconduct. where does that stand? >> that's going to court many the spring. the special prosecution unit i think has been essential. that's a new unit in our office. part of what it's designed to do is two things to earn the trust of the public by ensuring them that we handle these cases seriously. that we investigate them.

it also has really firmed up our relationship with the police department as well as we have agreed to hold ourselves accountable to be able to be accountable to ourselves and to the public. >> finally and briefly, we have a legislative session coming up, what's your wish list? >> we have a fairly long one, domestic violence is always a priority for us. there's a strangulation bill we'll be supporting. we're interested in putting forth legislation to stem what we see in terms of car thefts. the quality of life crimes i promised would be a priority for us. we're going to be working in the legislative session regarding handguns and the mentally ill. that's an issue that's important to us. we have a number of important legislative issues we're geared up and ready to go. >> we'll see you in annapolis or upper marlboro. thank you for joining us. let's go over to angie now. >> thank you, chris. let's go over to chuck now. >> sunshine is out there for now. a lot of people getting out to fedex field for today's game,

polls. the iowa caucus is set for january 3rd. meanwhile donald trump, he might have to cancel his presidential debate later this month in iowa. only two of the republican candidates newt gingrich and rick santorum have accepted invitations to the event. jon huntsman lashed out at trump earlier this week saying the debate buzz simply a chance for the donald to make it all about himself. trump say he's disappointed the other candidates are not attending and that he still hasn't ruled out a run for the worst as an independent. and it appears "saturday night live" just got some more great material from rick perry. during an interview with the des moines register yesterday perry reportedly not only got the number of justices on the supreme court wrong, he even got one of the justice's names wrong, he forgot it. perry forgot the name of sew ta mayor struggling for help. he then said the high court had
