airborne. in fast-acting effervescent formula, and new super-convenient chewable tablets! good morning. thanks for joining us. i'm chris gordon. >> i'm angie goff. welcome to news 4 on this sunday, december 11th. we're following a developing story in mexico this morning. a strong earthquake struck the western coast in guerrero. it was magnitude 6.8 but downgraded it to 6.5. it caused panic in mexico city and the resort area of acapulco. mexican president calderon tweeted one person was hurt by a collapsing ceiling. there have been no reports of

major damage. investigators are trying to determine what caused a two-car crash in prince george's county involving four children. two cars collided on sea pleasant and joplin street last night. when rescuers got there, six people were trapped in the cars, including the four children. paramedics took a woman to the hospital with life-threatening injuries and three children had nonlife threatening injuries. drugs were likely behind a police-involved shooting that left a man dead. the incident started with a car jacking on new hampshire avenue and ended with police firing at the man in adelphi. darcy spencer has the latest. >> reporter: it started here at sunoco gas station ata coma park at 3:45 in the afternoon. a 19-year-old man tries to carjack a man with a porsche. when the victim fought back he stand him with a steak knife.

>> the guy was actually stabbed right there at the pump. >> and you saw it? >> the whole thing. >> police say the victim had been inside the gas station store. when he came out the suspect was in his porsche. >> he confronted the suspect. he then stand the victim multiple times. >> after the stabbing police say the suspect jumped in his redford focus, rammed the porsche, and took off, leading police on a chase. the police chief said his officers lost sight of the suspect, then the car crashed and flipped here in adelphi, two miles from the gas station. police say the suspect jumped out and ran. a female officer tased him but it had no effect. then the teenage suspect attacked the officer. >> the suspect gained control, was on top of the officer, assaulting the officer, when a second officer pulled up, demanded the suspect stopped and

to defend the life of the officer in danger he then utilized deadly force, shooting put medical times. >> the focus also struck three occupied cars before crashing. those drivers were not hurt. back in the sunoco station, the stabbing victim suffered critical injuries. police say they'll be check to go see if the 19-year-old had been using drugs. obviously what he's been through and what he did just shows us he must have been on something. >> the takoma park police chief said it appears the officers followed proper policies and procedures. also, he says, his officer fired because he feared for the life and safety of his fellow officer. now at this point police have not yet identified that suspect. in adelphi, maryland, darcy spencer, news 4 today. >> it's time for a little check. did you hear the glass floor get shattered last night? below freezing.

another debate. newt gingrich was a target for most of the debate but he handled most of the attacks. nbc's brian moahr has the wrapup of the debate. >> in his first debate as front-runner, newt gingrich was the prime target. >> speaker gingrich has been in government for a long time. we can look at his record. >> let's be candid. the only reason you didn't become a career politician is you lost to teddy kennedy. >> wait a second. >> gingrich came ready for a fight and the other candidates were ready to take him on. >> you're taking money to influence the outcome of legislation in washington. >> well, he's been on different positions, you know, on so many issues. >> you strayed on that issues, as you have on others. >> gingrich's three marriages and infidelity has become an issue. >> if you would cheat on your spouse, why wouldn't you cheat on your business partner or anybody for that matter. >> i said up front openly i've

made mistakes at times. i had to go to god for forgiveness. >> it's how the multimillionaire did it that raised eyebrows. >> 10,000 bucks? $10,000 bet? >> and that joke could be costly as he tries to play catchup in iowa. brian mooahr, nbc news. the candidates will square off january 7th. that is days after the iowa caucus. mitt romney continues to pick up big endorsements in new hampshire. gastus said mitt is the strongest candidate with the best organization to take on president obama in 2012. romney also received the support of other prominent new hampshire politicians, including the state senate president. voters go to the polls in the granite state january 10th. right now officials are closing streets along the

national mall for a major road race. jingle all the way 8k starts at 9:00 this morning. last year a few thousand runners registered to run the 4.9 miles. this year's course begins on constitution avenue near 12th street. runners will head towards columbus stiller, then go towards third street, and down e street. those headed toward the national mall are urged to take metrobuses and trains. several streets will be blocked off until noon. more than 225,000 holiday wreaths are now on gravestones at arlington national cemetery. volunteers laid them one by one yesterday. the event completes a week-long national effort called wreaths across america. it started with a veterans parade in maine where they came from. the commemorative wreaths will remain in place at arlington until january 28thment this is the 20th years for wreaths across america. >> that is so wonderful. and i heard this is a family

welcome back. police say a string of goodwill store robberies in baltimore county was an inside job. 29-year-old richard pettaway is in jail without bail. he is accused of holding up two goodwill stores three times in the last month. he worked at one of the stores. the robberies happened while customers were inside the stores. investigators believe he targeted the stores because he was familiar with the operations and knew where to find the money. well, the grinch seems to be

affecting the holiday spirit in loudon county with more vandalism. somebody decapitated a crucified santa claus. the beheading comes after it was vandalized a few days earlier. a christian teenager and his atheist mother put up the fixture and replaced it after the first vandalism. santa claus is one of several holidays displays at the courthouse this year. some called the vandalism offensive and disrespectful. >> i believe there needs to be a little bit more tolerance in people expressing themselves. but at the same time there needs to be consideration trying not to co-op each other's holidays. >> it's sad in my heart. i don't like my children to see that. it's kind of hurtful. >> leesburg held its holiday parade yesterday. loudon county supervisors debated not allowing any

displays at the courthouse but decided against that. on a brighter note, for the second weekend in a row, local law enforcement took time off patrol to make sure children have a happy holiday. police hosted shop with a cop yesterday. check it out. 17 elementary students paired up with officers for a full day of shopping. kids got to browse the aisles at target 234 westfield wheaton shopping center. each child got a $100 gift card to spend on gifts not only for themselves but also their family members. the shopping spree we know is more than about presents. >> it provides some guidance and talk to the child and also at the same time work on the relationship the child has with law enforcement and the city of law enforcement in a new light to know they are just like anyone they see on the street. they are someone they can talk to. >> last weekend officers in prince george's county hosted shop with a cop.

similar events are taking place in more than 60 communities across the country this year. new from overnight, manuel noriega is on his way home to panama. he was flown from paris to panama overnight where he will be punished for crimes he committed during his reign. he spent more than 20 years in custody here in the u.s. and in france for drug trafficking and money laundering. panama also convicted him once he was being held abroad. he can soon be free, though, because of a law that allows prisoners over the age of 70 to serve their time under house arrest. noriega is 77. well, it took an all-nighter but it appears the u.n. has agreed to start a new plan against climate change. international delegates were seen sleeping during breaks at the u.n. climate conference in south africa. it would place all countries under the same legal system

under greenhouse laws. a local professor was one of three scientists to pick up his nobel prize in physics this weekend. adam reece received the prize in stockholm yesterday. he helped to discover that the universe is expanding at an accelerated rate. each is worth $1.5 million. so proud of the local guy. really, when we were reporting on this originally, everybody is like, yeah, uh, this is what he d. nobody understood. but to put it in layman's terms, when the big bang theory happened, it was his discovery that that was accelerating. that happened 14 billion years ago. >> a long while. >> yeah. >> reports from the day are sketchy. some got lost in translation over the 14 billion years. >> the fact that it's getting

the winds have gone calm. the real light winds will be a part of today's forecast. temperatures, though, look how cold they are. low to mid-20s. upper 20s to near 30 as you get close to the chesapeake bay. stanton, virginia, down to 19 degrees. 47 was our high yesterday. 32 the morning low. since the year 2000, this is the second latest first freeze. the first since 2000 was back in december 2001. the 01-02 winter, three inches of snow for the the whole winter. late first freeze is not a good sign. sunshine for your thursday. that's a good sign. clear skies as high pressure will be in charge of our weather the next couple days. eventually, though, that's going to slide off the eastern seaboard. cold for today thanks to the low start and the temperatures early this morning. a little hint of a warming trend coming our way as we get back to work and school tomorrow and tuesday. today we'll call it a night one. cold.

xavier was winning big with 10 seconds left in the game when two players started jawing at each other. kenny freeze took the worst of it with a big cut on his face. and he also got some bruised ribs. after the game, both teams talked about the ugly incident. >> we got disrespected a little bit before the game. guys calling us out. we're a tougher team. we're grown men over here. we have tough guys on the court. we went out there and zipped them up. that's what we just did to them. >> i made everybody take their jersey off. and they will not put it on again until they have a full understanding of where they go to school and what the university stands for and how lucky they are to even be there, let alone have a scholarship. >> three players were ejected and automatically suspended for the next game. the school, as well as their respective conferences can hand

if you drive in northern virginia you will soon have an idea how long that commute is going to take. starting tomorrow, seven new electronic signs will display travel times on i-95. three signs on the northbound side will give you times from route 234 to the beltway. route 123 to the beltway. four signs southbound will show signs from the pentagon to the beltway, beltway to route 123, fairfax to 324. the goal is to help drivers decide whether to bail out and find an alternate route when major delays or other problems are ahead. iran is refusing to return a u.s. surveillance drone. iranian television broadcast military officials inspecting unmanned aircraft called rq170. a guard says the u.s. violated

iran's airspace. the official warned the bigger response, because of the drone, and he says it was a hostile act. that was the first evidence that tehran captured the unmanned aircraft. an american teen kidnapped for five months in the philippines will be reunited with his family soon. that from the u.s. ambassador in the philippines. militants held 14-year-old kevin lunsman. the boy told his captors he was going to take a bath in a stream and instead he ran for help by following the river downstream. his captors initially said they freed the boy. authorities say he was flown to manila and turned over to u.s. officials. he was in the philippines with his mother visiting relatives when he was snatched back in july. the plan for plenty of extra time if you're mailing your holiday gifts out tomorrow. it is the busiest day of the year for fedex and other shipping companies.

past infidelity, the fact that he had gotten money from freddie mac. was he a consistent conservative? even his temperament, the way he would approach problems like calling the palestinians an inventive people. all of that made him a real target in this debate. i must say he came out very strong from this debate. there will be a lot of of questions but also questions for mitt romney and for ron paul, who i have on the program this morning who was going after gingrich pretty hard. >> it's fair to say the momentum for gingrich is going to continue. it seems like this morning everyone is talking about romney and this little joke about $10,000 and how it's coming back -- >> what he does is did he support the individual mandate where you have to buy health care insurance in massachusetts. and he bet rick perry i'll bet you $10,000 that's not what i did. a reminder how weighty he is. i don't think a lot of people wager $10,000, even when the redskins are doing better. yeah, that was a problem for

him. here's another problem. he went after gingrich on a lot of things by saying he was inconsistent but he never really clobbered him on this point. gingrich seemed to get the better of it. gingrich came out of this contest still very much number one. and in iowa, look, this debate about the middle east, for instance, is something that is likely to get him a lot of support among evangelical christians. and they're 60% of caucusgoers. again, i think the one you've got to watch is the one i'm talking to this morning, and that's dr. ron paul, the texas congressman, a solid number 3 in iowa. we'll talk this morning about how well he thought gingrich did last night. >> some people are saying iowa may be a ticket out for some of the candidates. >> sure. >> the last stop. who might those be? >> michele bachmann is really one who laid it on the line in iowa. if she doesn't do well there, i don't think she can reasonably continue. it remains a matter of money.

if you can live off the land so to speak maybe you can keep going. rick santorum looks like he has staying power on smaller donations and that sort of thing. but, look, ron paul, gingrich, look to do well in iowa. romney becomes a question park. for rick perly, too, if he can't make some stand in iowa after all the trouble he's had i think it becomes very difficult. >> we're talking about ron paul. what is his plan to take on the front-runner, gingrich. >> well, he made the point last night, did paul, that he is the most consistent conservative in this race. you don't have to question where he's been. he has libertarian views outside the mainstream of the party. but he is someone who is challenging the federal reserve, who talks about the importance of oath of office, thinks the government has lost its way, that resonates with a lot of americans right now. even with the occupy wall street folks, what the government has

or has not done. and organization matters. he has the best organization in iowa. that's according to iowa's own governor who thinks that's really going to matter. >> so it's sunday. it's meet the press. what's your agenda? >> well, we have ron paul to talk about last night's debate. we will debate the idea of saving the middleclass. we'll do that with senators graham and durbin. and our political roundtable gets you caught up on this debate last night. we have have the governor from i've eye joining. and chuck todd and others as we break down last night. >> press pass? >> we're also talking about the campaign and the prospect of a third way. we have the two guys who draft a candidate online and present the voters with a third way. the group is called americans elect. they have a very interesting path toward get through the dysfunction in your government right now. >> it's not donald trump?

lasted almost an hour. that is when the moon is covered by the earth's shadow. astronomers say it won't happen until april 15th, 2014. mark your calendars. >> we could see our moon. was it a full moon? >> absolutely right. you can only have a lunar eclipse when the the moon is full. you have to have the complete alignment. >> let me ask you this, why wait a whole other two years? >> it's very tricky to get the alignment. there will be other partial lunar eclipses. that's the next total lunar eclipse we will be able to see here in north america. flying to australia in december, not necessarily a bad idea. it is the southern hemisphere and it is the middle of their summer. so that's a bonus right there. >> we're not talking summer now.

i think the work that chancellor henderson is doing building upon education reform in the city, she's focusing a lot on curriculum this year to be able to get a standard curriculum across the city. we're focusing a lot on stem education, science, technology and mathematics. absolutely not. it's clear i think we can make gains with the current generation of kids and we'll make more with the kids coming along. >> in the days of horrible school buildings. the schools are better now, more attractive to not only the students but the parents who come to community events at the schools. they're working much better. >> absolutely. we have had ground breakings for what will be a completely renovated cardoza high school. we're building a new dunbar. >> your alma matter. >> and not a moment too soon to replace that building, i can tell. >> you on the flip side of education is whether you get a job or not. in some parts of the city, it is

perfectly fine. east of the river you say employment, african-american young males can be 50% or more. >> that's right. >> you said you would come in with the department of employment service witness stand $121 million annual budget. what's happening with employment services? and you have one city, one hire. 800 businesses have hired somebody. but that's just a drop in the bucket of who needs a job. >> well, again, first of all, we have excellent leadership with lisa mowery. she's doing a fantastic job. and many changes have been made in the department. one only look at how the youth employment program operated this past summer. >> we were denied nasty stories. reporters didn't get a chance to say oh, it's falling apart. there's been tens of millions of dollars and i would love to apologize for that but i'm glad i don't have to. you have to have an opportunity

to do the good news. >> young people do get jobs. to this day people 25 and 30 years later tell me i got my first job when marion berry started the jobs program. it is important. >> it is hugely important. we have a chance to teach a work ethic to kids. to give them real work to be done, expect them to show up on time, get along with the people they work with. with 14,126 kids who were employed this past summer, every child who registered got a job. they got paid on time. and frankly, came in $5 million under budget, tom. >> do you think you need to provide a few moments before the break -- do you need to provide michael brown, he said we ought to give tax breaks to people who hire city residents. >> we are. as part of one city, one hire. that is precisely what we're doing, giving employers tax credits and wage reimbursements to help people get in the door.

won't spend more money than comes in the door. >> okay. >> what happened is your fund balance which was at one time the envy of the nation, each year it had been balanced by going into the bank account. >> it's down to 600. >> 600. >> 600 million. >> by the way, we have no discretion with that. we will not only have gotten a balanced budget for the end of the fiscal year but we will have a surplus we will generate for the last fiscal year. and the council has approved our budget which says we will generate x amount of dollars coming in the door and we won't spend any more than that. >> and cfo and chairman council brown went to new york and made a commitment that you will rebuild that fund. >> absolutely. that was a big concern of

theirs, staying in debt count. it was a big concern of theirs. and, again, having a structural ly balanced budget. >> chief lanier is up for reappointment in 2012. homicide rates are down. i'll let you give the numbers. i know you like to give the numbers. but the police union says some quality of life crimes are ticking up as opposed to down. and jack evans introduced a bill this week that said all these clubs and restaurants that stay open late at night into the wee hours of the morning must hire licensed d.c. police officers so they can avoid the shooting like the one that occurred at dupont circle this past week. >> first of all, the homicide rate is the lowest in 42 or 43 years. at the end of the year,

obviously we have less than a month to go, we are at 104 i think it is at this stage for the year. versus 132 last year. so we know we're going to be well below what it was last year. in fact, if any time in the recent past. there are some crimes we're concerned about having gone up. we have what's called the morning report. i read it every morning. and i look at the homicide rates. i look at robberies, certain kinds of robbery. >> have you ever been the victim of a crime? somebody broke into your house once? >> twice. >> any kind of crime like that at all? >> no. i've never been involved at gunpoint or anything like that. but i have had break-ins. you feel very violated when somebody breaks into your house. >> jack evans bill, we had the terrible shooting where someone died, a couple other people who

were injured at the indian restaurant on connecticut avenue. what about the police officers working part-time or off-duty hours that stay open literally until dawn? >> my concern is what impact it's going to have them on being able to fill their first responsibility, and that is being able to make sure they are putting in the full complement of of hours to protect the citizens of the city. >> you're actually trying to hire, what is it, 100 more officers in the next year or something. >> 300. we have attrition of 15 a month. that's about 180. the first 180 will replace those who are leaving. but we're adding another 120 to the force which will put us around north of 3900 by the end of the year. >> and the police officers are told -- they're learning how to handle crowds. we're going to talk about the demonstrations in town when we come back from our break. >> absolutely. >> stay with us. we'll be right back.

>> exactly. and secondly, around the metro station. one thing we have done is our roving leader program. sometimes they will know these kids a lot of times. they are able to diffuse situations that may arise. we've also had the, you know, other volunteer groups to come down there as well and participate in helping to maintain order. there have been no serious incidents in the past because we have stepped up our presence. >> folks have been here for over a month in occupy d.c. most of the time, except for the convention center, they have just this week they took over k street and several blocks of k street in the heart of rush hour was a nightmare for people trying to get home. you have defended the right to protest. but you said you enforce the laws. >> absolutely.

>> is it a serious violation if people block traffic in the middle of hush hour? >> it is. >> what do you plan to do going forward? >> we had that going forward wednesday. we arrested 62 people for breaking the law. we're not going to tolerate that. the people -- you know, people are increasingly losing their patience because of the infringement on business here in the city. we've been working closely with the federal government. both of the places that occupy d.c. that located -- >> u.s. parks service. >> that's right. >> mcpherson square and freedom plaza. we also reached out in the very early going to try to establish communication. so, you know, it's a very delicate balance. we're walking a fine line. we support their right, of course, to exercise their first amendment rights. but we will not tolerate the breaking of a law. we want to see what happens after this week. there was an infusion of people into the city the week that just ended.

people who are anarchists. >> who infiltrate. >> who want to make the police overreact because people react to that. >> that's exactly right. >> the chief is doing a job well enough for this so far. >> i think so. i have said all along i'm a huge fan of cathy lanier as chief of police. she's done an outstanding job and i look forward to continue to go work with her. >> and that has to be approved by council, right? >> she's actually been confirmed. >> so you just continue her? >> that's correct. >> going to give her a raise? >> well, we have already dealt with the issues of salary. >> they are trying to even out the salary situation and all of that. >> well, again, in the case of the chief we want to be competitive with her salary. we have addressed that with the council. you know, bonuses and the like that have been provided in the past are no longer going to be provided. it will just be a straight salary for her. >> all right.

whether i would be committed to education reform. i said i absolutely would be. >> and you are doing it with streets and other transportation issues. >> that's right. >> we're not illinois where two governors have gone to prison in the last four years. >> yeah. we don't want to have that happen, do we? of course it would be nice if we had a governor. >> that's true. you fussed at us for focusing so much on the investigations. of course that's what we do. do you get any sense before christmas, early in the year? do you have any sense the timeline? >> i really don't. i don't know at all. you know, i work through mr. bennett. he's obviously representing me. >> some people fussed at us and shouted out, go investigate somebody -- and they would name other council members. some racial thing. the u.s. attorney is african-american.

town. and a third victim was a driver who was hit by rocks that fell on his vehicle. the epicenter was in guerrero, 100 miles southwest of mexico city >> locally, six people, including four children, are recovering after a serious crash in prince george's county. take a look. two cars somehow collided on c pleasant avenue near the intersection of joplin street. this was last night. rescuers had to cut the top off one car to get to the driver and the passengers. paramedics took a woman to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. and three children had nonlife-threatening injuries. investigators are work to go determine what caused the accident. takoma park police say a carjacking in pursuit led to a shooting that left one man dead. a 19-year-old tried to steal a man's car on new hampshire avenue. then he led police on awe pursuit to adelphi.

news 4's darcy spencer has more on what led to the shooting. >> reporter: it started here atk at 3:45 in the afternoon. a 19-year-old man tries to carjack a man with a porsche. when the victim fought back he stabbed him with a steak knife. >> thed right there at the pump. >> and you saw it? >> the whole thing. >> police say the victim had been inside the gas station store. when he came out the suspect was in his porsche. >> he confronted the suspect. a fight began. apparently the suspect grabbed something from the victim's hands. he then stabbed the victim multiple times. >> after the stabbing police say the suspect jumped in his red ford focus, rammed the porsche, and took off, leading police on a chase. the police chief said his officers lost sight of the suspect, then the car crashed and flipped here in adelphi, two miles from the gas station. police say the suspect jumped

out and ran. a female officer tased him but it had no effect. then police say the teenage suspect attacked the officer. >> the suspect gained control, was on top of the officer, assaulting the officer, when a second officer pulled up, demanded the suspect stopped and to defend the life of the officer in danger he then utilized deadly force, shooting multiple times. >> the focus also struck three occupied cars before crashing. those drivers were not hurt. back in the sunoco station, the stabbing victim suffered critical injuries. police say they'll be checking to see if the 19-year-old had been using drugs. obviously what he's been through and what he did just shows us he must have been on something. >> the takoma park police chief said it appears the officers followed proper policies and procedures. they're allowed to pursue suspects who are accused of felonies. also, he says, his officer fired because he feared for the life and safety of his fellow officer.

republican candidate ron paul, 10:30, right here on nbc 4. right now officials are closing streets along the national mall for a major road race. the jingle all the way 8k. last year a few thousand runners registered to run the 4.9 miles. this year's course begins on constitution avenue near 12th street. runners will head towards columbus circle, then go towards third street, and down e street. those headed toward the national mall are urged to take metrobuses and trains. several streets will be blocked off until noon. drivers can see a 20-year tradition continued when they pass arlington national cemetery. more than 225,000 holiday wreaths are now on gravestones at arlington national cemetery. volunteers laid them one by one yesterday. the event completes a week-long national effort called wreaths across america. it started with a veterans parade in maine where they came from.

welcome back. police say a string of goodwill store robberies in baltimore county was an inside job. 29-year-old richard pettaway is in jail without bail. he is accused of holding up two goodwill stores three times in the last month. he worked at one of the stores. the robberies happened while customers were inside the stores. investigators believe he targeted the stores because he was familiar with the operations and knew where to find the money. well, the grinch seems to be affecting the holiday spirit in loudon county with more vandalism. somebody decapitated a crucified santa claus. the beheading comes after it was vandalized a few days earlier. a christian teenager and his atheist mother put up the fixture and replaced it after the first vandalism. santa claus is one of several holidays displays at the courthouse this year. some called the vandalism

noriega is 77. the united nations need a few extra hours to come to an agreement to fight climate change. international delegates were seen sleeping during breaks at the u.n. climate conference in south africa. the proposed plan would place all countries under the same legal system regarding greenhouse gas limits. it would also set up agencies to help poorer nations adapt to changing their climate conditions. a local professor was one of three scientists to pick up his nobel prize in physics this weekend. adam reece from johns hopkins university refused the prize in stockholm yesterday. he helped to discover that the universe is expanding at an accelerated rate. each nobel prize is worth $1.5 million. plan plenty of extra time if you're mailing your holiday gifts out tomorrow. it's the busiest day of the year

well, if you drive in northern virginia, you'll soon have a better idea of just how long your commute is going to take. starting tomorrow, seven new electronic signs will display travel times on i-95. three signs will give you route 234 to the beltway, 123 to the beltway and fairfax county parkway to the d.c. line. four signs southbound will show signs from the pentagon to the beltway, beltway to route 123, fairfax county parkway to 234 and larton to route 3 in fredericksbu fredericksburg. the goal is to help drivers decide whether to bail out and find an alternate route when major delays or other problems are ahead. iran is refusing to return a

u.s. surveillance drone. iranian television broadcast military officials inspecting unmanned aircraft called rq170. senior commander of the iranian elite revolutioner guard said the u.s. violated iran's airspace. the official warned the bigger response, because of the drone, and he says it was a hostile act. that was the first evidence that tehran captured the unmanned aircraft. an american teen kidnapped for five months in the philippines will be reunited with his family soon. that from the u.s. ambassador in the philippines. muslim militants held 14-year-old kevin lunsman captured in a jungle. his family is from near lynchburg, virginia. the boy told his captors he was going to take a bath in a stream and instead he ran for help by following the river downstream. his captors initially said they freed the boy. authorities say he was flown to manila and turned over to u.s. officials.

he was in the philippines with his mother visiting relatives when he was snatched back in july. a heated college basketball rivalry turned very ugly last night. xavier was winning big with 10 seconds left in the game when two players started jawing at each other. kenny freeze took the worst of it with a big cut on his face. and he also got some bruised ribs. three players ended up ejected and automatically suspended for the next game. the conference can hand down additional punishment in they want. . well, it's a classic rivalry going back more than a century. 112 years in fact. army versus navy. this game came down to the wire. navy up 27-21.
