a recordsetting day at fedex field, just not for the redskins. another disappointment on their home turf. and a news 4 exclusive. police say the man who carjacked a cabbie so he could go shopping is a military service member. good evening and welcome to news 4 at 6:00. i'm aaron gilchrist. we'll get to those stories in just a moment. first, though, we begin with some breaking news. a police chase ended with two officers injured and suspectsri. this is all happening not far from north capitol street. news 4's darcy spencer live there. darcy, brings up to speed.

>> there have been some developments here just within the last several minutes. if we can go to some video we shot about 15 minutes ago, you can see that s.w.a.t. team officers entered a home here in the unit block of gallatin street in northwest washington. again, about 5:45, four hours into this barricade situation. that is where we are told possibly two suspects have been barricaded for the last several hours. it's unclear whether those suspects have been taken into custody, but all along, police say they want to resolve the situation peacefully. it started as a routine traffic stop by two u.s. park police officers in northwest d.c. at 1:45 this afternoon. and it turned into a crash, a lengthy standoff, police surrounding a house with weapons drawn, and helicopters circling above. police say the officers pulled over a vehicle somewhere in the area of north capital in gallatin streets, but when they got out, they say the vehicle took off. >> a short chase ensued, and of

course, during the chase, our officers were involved in a collision with the people who were fleeing. >> reporter: police say those suspects ran into a house in the unit block of gallatin street northwest and refused to come out. news 4 could see several children and a woman being escorted out of the home by s.w.a.t. officers. police say their goal is for the barricade to end peacefully. >> we're going to have our negotiating team in place and our tactical teams in place and, obviously, the first priority is to have a safe and successful resolution to this. and we'll attempt to do this by talking to these folks. >> reporter: the u.s. park police cruiser sustained considerable front-end damage. police say the two officers were hurt in the crash. they were taken to the hospital with what was described as nonlife-threatening injuries. meantime, some residents were escorted from the neighborhood, where the standoff was taking place. others have been instructed to stay inside for their own safety. police do not know if the suspects are armed. the u.s. park police are saying that there were numerous people

inside that house there in the unit block of gallatin street. again, as you saw, there were also some children inside the home. they believe that there were two suspects inside as well who were involved in this chase. earlier this afternoon, we saw the s.w.a.t. team enter the home here, about 15, 20 minutes ago, and we're waiting for word to find out whether those suspects have been taken into custody. there's no indication that anyone has been harmed. reporting live from northeast washington, darcy spencer, news 4. aaron, back to you. >> all right, darcy, thank you. it is a story you'll only see on news 4. police say the man behind a brazen carjacking and hit-and-run was a military service member. that wild ride started in bethesda and ended at a target in rockville. melissa mollet has details now in news 4 exclusive. >> reporter: 23-year-old andrew gerald robert, a service member who lives on campus at the walter reed national military medical center, has been charged with multiple counts, including

the carjacking of a cab he picked up at bethesda naval, kidnapping, and theft of a vehicle. police say this surveillance video taken at the rockville target store wednesday night helped them track him down. >> well, certainly, investigators did use that surveillance video from target. that helped them, certainly, identify him wells try to piece together what exactly occurred that night. >> reporter: police say he and his female companion, seen here on store surveillance video, got into the barwood cab wednesday just after 6:30. they asked the driver to head to the target store up broncville pike. they told him during the ride, the couple yelled at him, criticizing hi driver and calling him names. >> he commented that the suspect was making comments on his driving skills and he just didn't feel comfortable in that situation. at one point, the cab driver did say, i am going to call 911, and the suspect commented to him, i don't think that's a good idea. >> reporter: roberts then asked the driver to stop the car, he got out, pushed the driver into

the passenger seat, and got behind the wheel himself. police say he continued up 355, hitting a car at old georgetown road, but kept going. he drove to target, went inside, shopped, and then came back out and hopped into another cab. at this point, roberts' companion has not been arrested, but he will face additional charges stemming from the hit-and-run on rockville pike. police say he was released after posting a $3,500 bond. in rockville, maryland, melissa mollet, news 4. >> a spokesperson for the walter reed national military medical center says they are working closely with local authorities on this matter. the redskins made it pretty interesting, but didn't do quite enough, though. instead of celebrating an upset against the patriots, they're now trying to figure out how they threw this season away. dan hellie live now from fedex field with more on this. they did play pretty well, though, dan. >> yeah, aaron, the most surprising thing, i guess you could say, trent williams and fred davis, two of their best offensive players, already out.

then they lose another offensive lineman during pregame warm y-u. so they played a rookie left tackle during most of the game. had to play another free agent they picked up recently at right tackle. and then they come out and have one of the most productive offensive games of the season. they dominated time of possession, had more rushing yards. rex grossman actually played pretty well, but it just wasn't enough in the end. final score, 34-27. the patriots, 10-3. redskins now 4-9 on this season that has gotten to be oh, so long. let's take a look at some of the highlights from this one. tom brady and the patriots looking for their first-ever win here at fedex field. first quarter, patriots up 7-3, operating in the red zone. brady picks up with ron gr grancowski. he set the single season record, and he would have another one. second quarter, skins down 14-10 and it's time for trickeration.

helu picks it, and santana moss scoots in for the 49-yard touchdown from one wide receiver to the other, makes it 17-14. to the fourth, under a minute to play. third and goal at the seventh. grossman looking for santana moss, off his hands and picked off by gehrard mayo of the patriots. that seals the game for new england. patriots beat the redskins, 34-27. it's their fifth straight win. the skins have now lost eight of their last nine. a tough one to swallow for the coach and the players. >> overall, i was pleased with, you know, the effort, obviously. displeased with not being able to finish it and do what you need to do to win. >> just frustrating, you know? i mean, to play well and move the ball and then to be in the position to try and win the game and have it, you know, go the other way, it's frustrating.

>> redskins' quarterback rex grossman, a funny tweet after the game. one fan said, "this might be the best-case scenario for the redskins. often exciting game, but then you lose, so you get to keep your draft position." kind of sad way to look at it, but maybe that's the harsh reality for the redskins at this point. aaron? >> thank you, dan. now to decision 2012. more good news for newt gingrich tonight. according to several new nbc news marist polls, the former house speaker has opened up a commanding lead in south carolina and florida. both states historically been good predictors of the eventually republican presidential nominee. gingrich has a 20-point lead over mitt romney in south carolina. the winner of that state's primary has been the gop nominee since 1980. both skouth carolina and florid hold their primaries in late january. the first family attended services this morning at a historical episcopal church just across the street from the white house. the president, first lady,

a private viewing underway right now for a slain virginia tech police officer. the family of deriek crouse is receiving friends until 8:00 tonight. the father of five was killed on thursday when 22-year-old ross ashley walked up and shot crouse while he was conducting a traffic stop. ashley then shot himself. a funeral service for officer crouse will be held tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. at virginia tech's castle coliseum. governor bob mcdonnell is expected to speak there. tomorrow lawmakers in maryland will propose new legislation to combat flash mob robberies. take a look at this video taken last month in silver spring. it shows t s dozens of teens crowding into a convenience store and taking items without paying. they didn't face significant charges, however, because those items were -- they didn't face those significant charges because the items were -- that

former penn state coach joe paterno is in the hospital tonight after a fall at his home. he reportedly re-fractured his pelvis. no surgery required, but paterno will stay in the hospital to continue treatment for lung cancer until he retires in the fall. paterno hurt his pelvis when a player blindsided him before the season started. the coach was fired for not doing more after learning of sex abuse charges against his assistant, jerry sandusky. eight of the ten victims who say that sandusky molested him will testify on tuesday. the former coach has maintained his innocence in several interviews since he was charged. sandusky's lawyer says the accusers' claims just don't add up, and he believes the main motivation here could be money. the center county pennsylvania courthouse had to hold a lottery to assign seats for tuesday's hearing. they wanted to avoid a mob scene outside the courthouse. nasa says it is tightening its lending policies, because hundreds of moon rocks have gone

missing. more than 800 pounds of lunar rock was collected during the apollo missions. many were given as presidential lifts and loaned to researchers. nasa now lists about 300 samples as missing or stolen. the real number could be much higher. one inspector general's audit found nearly 20% of researchers who found moon samples couldn't account for all of them. check their mantles at home, maybe. that kind of thing happens with rocks. >> funny how that works. so you promised a nice day with lots of sun and what not, and you delivered. >> promise fulfilled, no doubt about that. beautiful day outside today. no doubt about it. but as we get ready to go back to work and school, we did a little checking in the record books. and rain on wednesday. you know, we've had rain on either tuesday, wednesday, or thursday for the last eight weeks in a row around here. you have to go back to early october before you had a completely dry midweek. and in that same eight-week stretch, only two rainy
