>> reporter: wendy, so many were expected for the service. it was held in cassell coliseum, across the parking lot from where he was shot to death. as done before, the virginia tech community stood together. this time with thousands of law enforcement officers to honor to monowho protected them for years. arrived at cassell coliseum, embraced by the law enforcement family. the lot was filled with squad cars from as far away as buffalo, new york. they were all there to support the family and the virginia tech community. >> just to show our support from the different agencies and how close we are as a family. law enforcement. i mean it hurts for all of us when this happens. you never know if it will be us. >> reporter: inside, the service was a celebration of his life along with the sorrow of his

loss. governor bob mcdonnell remembered him. his sacrifice came not on the battlefield, but on a college c campus. >> deriek crouse was a public servant, a warrior, a police officer and yes, a great father, husband, son, brother, stepfather, friend and fellow law enforcement officer. >> reporter: thousands of students came to the service many dressed in tech color determined to show the virginia tech community stands together in tragedy. >> every day, they sacrifice to keep us safe. it's the least we can do to support them. >> reporter: after the service, thousands of officers and first responders lined the streets to pay their last respects. the the mournful bagpipe plays as the family follows the casket out of the coliseum.

the blue lights began to shine as the procession of officers left for the cemetery. many touching and tearful moments here today. coming up on news 4 at 6:00, you'll hear from some of deriek crouse's friends. i'm julie carey, back to you. >> thank you, julie. he was shot and killed by 22-year-old ross ashley during a routine traffic stop. he killed himself a short time later. there's no motive for the shooting. the family is offering their condolences and prayers. in an unsigned statement, they asked their privacy be respected. new attention on an old case that involves a missing man. this 29-year-old was last seen at his work sight on international drive. he told his boss he was meeting friends that night. that was the last time anyone saw him.

police are calling his disappearance suspicious and they are asking anyone with information to contact crime solvers. there are major traffic delays in loudoun county because of this. route 50 remains closed between watson road and gum spring road because of this crash between a car and concrete truck. the driver of the car was stuck under the truck. he was rescued 45 minutes ago. they were taken to local hospitals. what caused it is being investigated. turning now, the workweek got off to a chilly start. the question is, will the chill stay here? >> it was like a freeze doug kammerer. >> we officially went down to 29 degrees this weekend. we have been on a cold note out there. high temperature only in the low 40s for many of us. right now, many of you are in the 30s. 43 degrees outside right now at the airport. the winds are calm. it's definitely a cool evening

state coordinator mike mcqueary is being called into attention. he said he saw him molest a young boy. now a friend says he told them he only heard sound that is led to that conclusion. the holiday rush is on. fedex is in full swing for the busiest shipping day of the year. news 4s tracee wilkins has the story. >> reporter: if you are not a procrastinator and have your package in the mail, it could be at the fedex hub in northeast washington. take a look at these workers and you can tell why they call this the businessest shipping day of the year. the rush is on to get packages shipped in time for the holidays. gift givers aren't the only ones feeling the pressure. >> it's intense. we have a higher volume of packages. but, we make sure we balance things out. if possible, we insert another

surprised a lot of folks. >> i think it did. close only counts in horseshoes, not the nfl. the redskins has a valiant effort on offense. one of the best performances of the season. it's 34-27. it's their ninth loss of the year. that locks up the seventh losing season in the last decade for the franchise. mike shanahan, this is the first time he's going to experience back-to-back losing seasons. the redskins could not stop rob. he was a beast. six catches for 106 yards and two touchdowns. he set the new nfl record for touchdowns by a tight end. he was running around like forest gump. 15 touchdowns on the season. rex grossman, pat, at the end of the game into the hands of gerard. look closely. the ball hits the ground.

the airport, 43 degrees on this chilly evening. winds on the calm side right now. we are looking at partly cloudy skies. mid high level clouds. look at the numbers. 30 near annapolis. 22 in baltimore. 16 is the low temperature in frederick. 19 in culpeper, manassas and leesburg. the district in at 29 degrees. this is the first temperature below freezing that we have seen all yearlong, how about that. current temperature now, already cold. 34 in frederick, 39 in leesburg, 37 in culpeper. that shows you we are going to see another fairly chilly evening across the area. gaithersburg and rockville, 47. gaithersburg, 37. duls coming in at 39 degrees. we are not going to see snow or rain to talk about. storm 4 doppler radar all clear outside now. the cloud cover is starting to make its way up from the south.

there's a storm system to the south. it will stay to the south. it's giving us clouds right now. we will not see the clouds tomorrow. expect more sunshine and more cool air. high pressure dominating the region. it keeps us dry. it will keep us on the cool side. temperatures maybe above average tomorrow as the high slides down to the south we start to see the milder air return back to the west. it's going to give us a chance as the temperatures into the low 50s. by thursday, ahead of a frontal boundary, warmer than that. how about temperatures in the upper 50s? this evening, a few clouds. temperatures in the upper 30s to lower 40s. tomorrow morning, waking up to cool numbers out there. mostly clear. seasonably cool, if not cold. bundle up. temperatures 27 to 33. some areas 22 to 23 degrees. it's going to be a cold one in the colder areas. tomorrow afternoon, high clouds moving in. mostly sunny. a nice afternoon.

welcome. >> nice to be on my hometown station. how are you, wendy? >> i'm good. i'm good, ted. we have been hearing full withdrawal, complete withdrawal for months now. are we out of the iraq as of new year's eve? >> we are out militarily. we are far from being out of iraq. there will a few hundred dollar u.s. troops that help them train. we have the largest embassy that the united states owns anywhere in the world in baghdad. they have staffs of about 16,000 to 17,000 people. you tell me, are we out? >> doesn't sound like it. sounds like we are going to spend a lot of money, still, in iraq. >> we are going to spend an awful lot of money, you are exactly right. the people working there now, i'll give you one example. the supervisor on the construction team building the

we fast 4ward through the headlines. a funeral took place this afternoon for officer deriek crouse. he was killed after making a traffic stop at virginia tech. he loved his family and his job. the man who shot him, a 22-year-old who killed himself a short time later. police released no motive in the killing. we follow breaking news. a man shot in the head died from his injuries. that happened an hour ago. just off wheelie avenue. route 50 in loudoun county is

close closed in both directions at this hour because of a serious crash involving a car and concrete truck. the drivers of both vehicles had to be rescued and taken to hospitals. the cause of the crash is under investigation. let's fast 4ward to the weather, doug? >> a chilly evening and a chilly night. not as cold as earlier this morning. some numbers down into the low 20s. 32 in frederick, maryland. 37 in manassas. the warm spot at 43 degrees. it will be a chilly night but it will be dry. it's going to stay dry until, well, until we talk about it again. we'll talk about it in a minute. >> thanks, doug. police in prince william county say they have taken down a major oxycontin business. a doctor responsible for putting thousands of pain pills on the

streets every week. darcy spencer has more on the charges the doctor is facing. darcy? >> reporter: i talked to numerous residents who lived near the office. none of them surprised he distributed narcotics and precipitation fraud. certain days of the week, patients are lining up to get inside. they knew something was up. alex, a 73-year-old doctor, escorted out of his office in handcuffs wearing a lab coat as patients watched. he was selling prescriptions for painkillers to the tune of 8,000 oxycontin pills every week. >> a cash only operation. not worrying about where they are going. strictly doing it for money is the main motive. >> reporter: he wrote countless numbers of prescriptions to

addicts. a husband and wife were arrested. police say they were the doctors main clients. this man lived in the basement. police describe him as a lookout for the business. residents in the area say they knew something was going on. they called tuesdays and thursdays doctor days. patients lined up here at the door in the parking lot. it would be loads with cars, 40, maybe 50. >> i knew what was going on. there were drugs. whatever. i knew. >> reporter: this woman lived near the doctors office. they would watch with by knock lars as they lined up. >> what do you think about 8,000 pills a week going out? >> holy moly. >> it's right. >> tips to the community that led to the doctors arrest. they noticed a high volume of traffic on those doctor days. >> it's not uncommon to have an overdose. it's not uncommon to die from

them. it's very important that an operation like this is shut down. >> prince william county police are trying to get a handle on how big the operation was, how many pills distributed and how many patients benefited. the investigation continues. additional arrests are expected. reporting live, darcy spencer. back to you. >> thanks, darcy. members of a virginia national guard unit deployed to iraq and are back for the holidays. the soldiers of the 113th reg meant returned to fredericksburg today. they were deployed in june and came back safely. >> a lot of people worked hard to get us here. it means a lot to be home for christmas. >> it's a great opportunity to be home and spend time with my family, be on american soil. we appreciate everything we have here in the country. >> another group of soldiers

with the 116th brigade are expected to get home later this month. here in the district, the h street corridor is booming with commercial redevelopment. two developers came up with a novel way of getting community input on what they should do with their building. news 4's tom sherwood is in the news room with more on the story. >> h street never recovered from the 1968 riots. now new businesses open there nearly every day. one of the old businesses on h street snooes is smokey's barbershop open since 1966. they have seen it all. especially the new bars and restaurants that brought new life to the area. >> it's change. i think it's a good change. you know, something new. different. great change. >> just across the street from

smokey's is this unusual sign. a developer is asking people to recommend the best business needed in the neighborhood. >> what would you like to see across the street? >> a grocery store or something that would benefit the neighborhood. >> the ask the community idea is the brain child of two young developers who say they are serious about turning the space into something people in the community want. >> the system was broken. all the decisions were being made from the top down by big money from wall street. they let people who live in a neighborhood have a say, be part of developing their own neighborhood. >> they have created a website, popularrise.com. first in the nation concept, they say. >> the way it works, submit your own ideas or vote for what other people submitted. >> bring in the community, let them be involved in the decision making. when you ask people what they want, they are going to support

maryland lawmakers are posing new legislation to stop the so-called flash mob robberies. it's a mob of teens going into the store, grabbing items and leaving without paying. chris gordon is outside a store where a recent robbery took place. chris? >> reporter: it is one of the first that made news in our area. they gather quickly. they can use social media like texting and tweeting. sometimes they get together by virtue that kids are just hanging around. they caught this flash mob the night of august 13. the only clerk on duty watched

helplessly. all kinds of snacks and beverages were gone. the community was upset. craig weis said something needs to be done. >> it's a serious crime. it has a huge impact on the business. the clerk who was there the night of the robbery quit immediately after the incident. you are impacting people's lives. >> reporter: it happened again november 19th. this one at the 7-11. the idea of a youth curfew ran into legislation. it's being submitted to the maryland state legislature that would hold each participant in a flash mob responsible for the merchandise taken. it could result in tougher punishments. the goal is to stop them. >> when you can only charge them with the amount stolen, that's a slap on the wrist. if they are held accountable for

you can see where that number's going to go. manassas and culpeper 36 degrees. fredericksburg down two degrees, down to 41. as far as the forecast, no rain to talk about. we are going to be dry through the next couple days. the next best chance of rain comes during the day on thursday. look at the lows tonight. not as chilly as last night. still, seasonably cold. 22 in frederick, 21 in martinsburg and leesburg. freezing inside the district. everywhere is below freezing. once again, overnight, step outside. the temperatures will warm up a little bit from where they were. the high temperature 46. tomorrow, we'll see a high of 50 in washington. 51 in manassas. gaithersburg and frederick, 48 degrees there. coming up tomorrow, tomorrow night we are going to be live in somebody's front yard for holiday lights. we are doing two of them this week. if you would like me to come out

wish list items but necessities, food, a hot meal for christmas. a lot of kids are asking for gifts for their parents. >> the postal service expects to deliver 16.5 billion cards, letters and packages between now and new year's eve. yesterday's redskins game was not the beating we were expecting. dan has the post mortum. >> they went toe to toe to be robbed in the end. i don't think it was an interception rex grossman threw. redskins played well. trevor price joins me now. probably the best or at least one of the best games by the redskins offense this season. >> absolutely. you put up 463 yards. we used to hear mike shanahan say this, if you put up 450
