i'm pat lawson muse. >> i'm barbara harrison in for jim handly. what a difference a day makes as pat said. it was in the 60s yesterday, today in the 40s. >> veronica johnson is in the weather center with details. veronica? >> a big drop from not only where we were yesterday at this time, but a big difference from where we were shortly after midnight. temperatures didn't start dropping until the early, early morning hours. in the 60s late last night, early this morning. 64 in manassas and culpeper. now, 15 to 20 degrees cooler. on top of that, we have cloud cover and light shower that is are falling across southern portions of the viewing area. 44 with 45% humidity. a lot of moisture in the air. if you are not getting the rain, it feels humid out there.

fredericksburg getting the rain. most of the area is dry. quantico, virginia, richmond area, all that through the northern neck where the rain is making its way from southwest, east and northeastward sliding through. evening showers are going to be around for awhile. in the 40s now. 46 in fredericksburg. not much of a temperature range throughout the area. boy oh boy, it is going to dip down tonight. the showers sticking around until 9:00 and 11:00 p.m. we drop down to the 30s. this weekend, we are talking about chilly air. we are talking about sunshine returning. oh, yeah, we are talking about flurries, too. i'll give you the timing on that in a couple minutes. >> thanks. mike mcqueary says what witnessed jerry sandusky doing in a shower was over the line

and inappropriate. he testified for two penn state administrators accused of lying to a grand jury. a few minutes ago, a judge ruled the case can go to trial. we have more from pennsylvania. >> reporter: for the first time, mike mcqueary spoke publicly about allegations of jerry sandusky having sex with a boy in 2002 in graphic detail and under oath. mcqueary, then a graduate assistant heard noises from the shower, then saw sandusky standing behind the boy with his hands around his waist. while he wasn't 100% certain, he believed sandusky was molesting the boy. his testimony is key. curley and schultz lied about what mcqueary told them.

mcqueary's testimony was damaging. >> did he describe something that was necessarily a sexual act? >> curley and schultz's lawyers claim they were not told about the sexual details. it may be contradicted by another witness and family friend who says on the night it occurred, mcqueary says he only heard noises. he faces criticism. he was shocked and distraught and turned to his father for advice but did not go to police. instead, he met with head football coach, joe paterno and conveyed what he saw. paterno said he identified the man as sandusky. he said he would pass the concerns with the right people and testified he contacted

curley. also testifying, mcqueary's father. in harrisburg, pennsylvania, michelle franzen, news 4. another round of delays on metro this weekend. on the red line, every train will end at dupont. orange line trains will share a track between east and westphals church. blue line trains between the armory and addison road. on the yellow line, trains will only go between huntington and mt. vernon square. you can transfer to the green line where it should be wrapped up for monday's commute. the 11th street bridge will soon be open for business. the first span of the new and improved bridge is set to open this weekend. megan mcgrath talked to commuters who have been eagerly awaiting the opening.

hope road. that will remain the case for several months. by the summer, a third span will open. highway drivers will be separate from those on local roads. it may take awhile to get used to the spans. 695, not a number we are familiar with around here. 695 is the southeast-southwest freeway. another thing to keep in mind, another plus is when this is all done, commuters are going to be able to go north on 295 from the 11th street bridge, something you can't do right now. megan mcgrath, news 4. there's traffic relief for virginia commuters who take i-66. starting this weekend, you take a flyover ramp to get to 495. that should make it easier to merge on to oncoming traffic. they will close all exits overnight so crews can prepare for the new traffic

and it means 2011 will end with another partisan fight. i'm steve handelsman, news 4, capitol hill. it's been a mixed day for stocks. the markets are ending mixed as the numbers continue to settle after closing bell. the dow down seven points ending 11,860. the nasdaq is up 14 points and s&p 500 is up by three. barry bonds has avoided jail time. an hour ago, a judge sentenced him to probation and house arrest. a federal judge sentenced him to 30 days of house arrest and two years of probation. prosecutors were asking for 15 months in jail. he lied to congress during the investigation into the use of steroids in professional sports. sad news this afternoon about singer etta james. her doctors say she is terminally ill.

the salvation army's angel tree program began giving out toys to families today. the salvation army expects to help 14,000 children in the district and the metro area through the program. thanks to the help of volunteers they were able to process gifts for about 100 families today. it will continue on monday, tuesday and wednesday of next week. nbc 4 is a proud sponsor of the angel tree program. that mercury really dropped off there. it started out fine this morning. by the time we went out for lunch, whoa! >> this is why it's so important to get your weather from us.

michael pratt. he told the woman he needed her keys to get something out of the car and never came back. when she called him, he laughed and admitted to stealing the car. four days later, he called her to tell her he abandoned the vehicle. deputies found the car and arrested him. a california teen got stuck in a chimney. it happened in stockton. his mom called firefighters. they used soapy water to free him. they had to take apart the chimney. they believe he was trying to sneak into the house after missing his curfew. no injuries reported. two robbers in wisconsin alerted police to the crime. one of the suspects pocket dialed 911. police overheard them talking about the computer games and dvds they just stole.

since being cleared of a murder charge in italy. now a judge is explaining why the verdict was thrown out. seems the evidence did not hold up. >> reporter: amanda knox was overcome with emotion when the guilty verdict was overturned. she spent nearly four years in prison. ushered out of the courtroom, out of italy and home to seattle as quickly as her family could get her there. in a report released thursday, the italian judge offered a blistering critique. there was no evidence knox and her former boyfriend murdered knox's roommate in 2007. in a statement, knox's parents write the report says what they said all along. it was a theory that had no basis. >> one could not hope for more
