tonight tragedy at the foot of the key bridge. two people are dead, one of them a veteran park police officer. the emergency response led to

gridlock on friday night rush hour with the bridge closed to traffic for nearly an hour. shomari stone has new details about exactly what happened there. >> that's right. traffic was backed up for quite some time. a lot of people were trying to figure out what is going on. and we explained it is a tragic situation. u.s. park police officer michael bain has a heart attack and collapsed and died beneath the bridge. around 5:30 this evening he was trying to help a man on the path under the bridge. sources tell me that man jumped from the bridge and the officer responded to the scene. both men died. traffic was backed up for an hour and witnesses described the scene. >> i was crossing key bridge going toward georgetown on this side. i looked down and saw a bunch of cop cars come by and a lot in virginia also.

>> i have known mike for his entire career and known mike to be a very dedicated and bold officer a dedicated family member and a member of the park police family. >> officer bain leaves behind a wife and a son. she a 19-year veteran. shomari stone, back to you. police officers ran down a man who plowed his car into a grocery store tonight at the safeway in northwest d.c. after the crash the driver got out and ran. officers found him and arrested him. tonight the company that owns victoria's secret confirms to news4 it is looking into alleged racial harassment stemming from an incident involving a female army colonel.

treated as such. >> reporter: the limited brands issued a statement that says we are adamant that all customers be treated with decency and respect we take the allegations seriously. we are investigating the situation and will take appropriate action. the evening got more humiliating for the family. they claim that the employee approached a security guard saying they were disruptive. they say they were asked to leave the mall. the mall has not responded to news4's requests for comment. jackie bensen, news4. a graduate student from george washington university has died from a rare but contagious disease meningitis. initials have not identified the student but the person lived off campus. administrators have gotten in touch with 35 people with whom the student came in contact before death. it can be deadly if spread but

can be treated with antibiotics. a candidate for the d.c. council insists he was targeted when he was arrested for soliciting a prostitute last night. he was arrested in northeast d.c. you may recognize the name. he is a son of a previous councilman with the same name. he offered an undercover officer money for a sex act near north capital and k streets. his campaign manager says he was not soliciting in any way. he is trying to unseat the incumbent. looking outside a cloudy and cool friday night and there is a lot on the radar. >> there is a lot on the radar right now. most of it is not reaching the ground. what is reaching the ground is falling in the form of rain, sleet and a little bit in the way of light snow out there mixing in from time to time. the biggest enhancement in southern portions of maryland. this is the area near st. mary's

county that could see sleet mixed in and snow mixed in too. an an area that could move through the washington, d.c. area. you could see a flake tonight but that's about it. the temperatures will be the big story this weekend. we'll talk about that coming up. testimony today from the salesman who claims to have witnessed former penn state coach jerry man dusky molest a boy on campus. the testimony from mike mcqueary was troubling to say the least. he testified in harrisburg, pennsylvania at a preliminary hearing for two penn state administrators. those two are accused of not notifying the police about the allegations of abuse and later lying under oath. lue and khan reports. >> reporter: he said it sounded sexual, skin to skin.

he testified when he went to his locker to put in new tennis shoes he could see a reflection of jerry sandusky and the boy in the mirror in the shower. to make sure he saw what he thought he saw he looked over his shoulder into the shower and i believe that jerry was having intercourse with him. there was no screaming, protests or yelling. later he said i can't say 100% sure that is what was occurring. he turned back to his locker and slammed it shut and looked back and said that they stood five feet apart from each other and looked at him and he looked directly at them. he said that sandusky's face looked blank. mcqueary said when he met with the president and athletic director nine or ten days later he told them it was sexual

intercourse over the line and there is no question in my mind that i conveyed to the them. i saw jerry with a boy in the shower and there was weird sexual acts going on in the shower. he testified the whole meeting lasted ten or 12 meetings. attorneys say they told the grand jury the truth as they knew it that mcqueary never gave them this description. a judge ruled that both administrators will go on trial for perjury and not reporting the abuse of a child. an nfl player alleged to be one of the biggest drug dealers in chicago has been released from jail tonight. his name is sam hurd. minutes before he got out of jail, the chicago bears cut him. hurd's arrest on wednesday sent rumors swirling that he may have supplied drugs to other nfl players. hurd's lawyer issued a statement saying that hurd adamantly

denies supplying drugs to other players. an hour from now the u.s. government wl be open for business and that's significant because the house and senate leaders agreed to a $1 trillion spending measure to avoid a government shutdown. the senate will vote tomorrow. the spending plan hikes pentagon and health care budgets but cuts homeland security. it is nicknamed the mega bus. >> will the going to be a little while before we realize we are on the bus or have been thrown under it. >> it is important that we celebrate the bipartisan nature of this big. >> now lawmakers will turn their extension to extending the payroll tax cut. a two-month extension is likely but includes a fast track of the keystone oil pipeline, something that president obama vowed to veto if it is included. the two former ceos of

fannie mae and freddie mac are hit with allegations of fraud from the securities and exchange commission. the s.e.c. says daniel mudd and richard syron tried to cover up the extent of the subprime mortgages that they were involved in. fannie and freddie collapsed in 2008 leaving the taxpayers with a $150 million bill. five virginia college students accused in a hazing death will avoid jail time. samuel harris mason was found dead in october of last year. investigators say he was forced to drink while pledging a fraternity. five members of the fraternity pleaded guilty to providing alcohol to a minor and will pay a $1,000 fine. the barefoot bandit will spend more than seven years in

a man has been accused of going through great lengths to spy on women in a grocery store bathroom. he was arrested in virginia on sunday. police say he went into the men's room climbed into the ceiling, broke through a sheetrock wall then crawled above the ladies room. he was caught when a woman noticed a hand sticking out from the ceiling. authorities are on the lookout for a purse snatcher targeting area churches. purses have been stolen from ten churches. the suspect in the cases is a woman. investigators think she is trying to exploit the security some feel while they are at church. a nativity scene in fredericksburg, virginia has been complete again after police

recovered the stolen baby jesus figure. the figure was taken from the central park shopping center on tuesday. a 25-year-old woman who works at nearby wal-mart allegedly posted a photo of the statue on facebook. somebody who saw the photo tipped off the police. officers found the baby jesus inside a house in sportsylvania >> have you ever recovered anything like this? >> no i haven't. >> that figure is filled with 80 pounds of concrete before it was stolen. police suspect another person was involved in halting it away. a big welcome home from iraq. family and friends greeted the soldiers at bwi marshal airport. it was an emotional homecoming. the families and service members say they have been waiting a

any time soon either. that is good news for you. 43 third and is the current temperature with the winds at 6 miles per hour. around the region temperatures are on the cool side but not cold. 37 in winchester. right now in waldorf is 41. the radar -- our radar not showing anything in the d.c. area. but showing an enhanced echo down here. this is most likely melting snow aloft and sleet in st. mary's county the same areas that saw it earlier today could see more in the next couple hours. we widen out here. it looks like we have some of this making its way into the washington area but it is not reaching the ground in this region. if it does it would be a sprinkle or possible flurry but

that's about it. tomorrow night it is going to be chilly with the clo uc moving in. and a storm system moves down from the north from canada. watch what happens here. this model around 10:30 brings snow around the washington, d.c. area. i think we will see the potential for at least some flurries out there but i don't think we see accumulation just a reenforcement of the cool air for sunday. monday we get back in the mild temperatures with the high of 50 degrees with plenty of sunshine. no at lot of significant weather going on. tomorrow morning you wake up to 28 to 33 degrees. a chilly breeze and 10 to 15-mile-per-hour wind with wind chills in the low 20s. tomorrow the wind chills in the 30s all day long with the winds out of the northwest at 10 to 20 miles per hour.
