by police after being left alone for 24 hours. >> this is a disturbing case of alleged child abandonment. it started at 2:00 this amp when a frantic mother called prince george's county police and asked them to check on the welfare of her child here at 6900 walker mill road. the back story, the apartment manager tells us that the mother of this two-year-old girl was hospitalized on friday leaving the child with the girl's father. when the mother was ready to get out of the hospital she called the father to check on the two-year-old. the father led her to believe that the child had been on her own for 24 hours with no adult supervision in the apartment. that's when the mom called authorities and asked them to check on the girl's welfare. the apartment manager let the police into the apartment and the two-year-old girl was in a

bedroom, cold and hungry but thankfully she was okay. so prince george's county police have the father in custody. charges are pending. we are led to believe there may be more arrests in this disturbing case of child abandonment. but authorities were called in. the child was given to them this afternoon and when the mom was released from the hospital apparently the two-year-old girl and the mom have been reeunited a metro mishap left passengers stuck underground for hours. >> metro is planning to inspect all of its 5,000 series rail cars. a train lost a part of a wheel this morning. the metro system is safe and they expect no delays tomorrow morning. jackie bensen is all over this tonight. and i understand there were some clues that something was wrong

before the train left the plaza. >> reporter: that's right. a loud noise. a passenger tells news4 he heard a loud noise and he thought that the train would remain stopped. instead it continued on to a two-hour ordeal. >> i called the metro police. we just passed the plaza. >> reporter: concern is rising as morning commuters realize something bad is happening. ronald cunningham with with his six-year-old granddaughter. he believes that the two-hour wait in the dark and walk through the tunnel could have been avoided. the train should have been evacuated after hearing a loud and unusual sound as it pulled into the plaza station. >> it sounded like metal like something had come loose. i noticed that the metro guy was standing in the door. i could tell from his reactions

the way he responded to the sound, and what he did is when the door opened he leapt out of the train. >> the metro gm confirms that the agency is investigating reports that the passengers tried to heard the reports. >> those are the reports that we'll go over tomorrow morning and see what was said to whom and the time frames for it. >> reporter: the train with 300 people on board continued on only about 200 feet before being stuck in the tunnel. metro blames a friction ring that fell off a blue line train and struck the third rail. >> after today's experience with metro i have second thoughts about using the metro. >> reporter: we got a lot of complaints from passengers aboard the trains the three trains involved. metro department give the passengers enough information soon enough to let them know what was going on. >> thank you. >> for the second night in a row police arrested occupy d.c.

protesters outside the white house. seven people were arrested after refusing to leave the sidewalk. they were protesting parts of the defense appropriations bill which expands the military's power to detain terror suspects indefinitely. police are investing after a bodiwise found in an apartment complex in rusten. a foul smell led officers to gray wing square off rusten parkway. the cause of death and the person's i.d. have not been released yet. incredible video from prince george's county police showing two men who robbed an armored car back in april. the video shows them with high-powered guns ambushing a workers in a bank of america on old branch avenue in clinton. after that they took off in a white van. now look at what security agents in reagan national airport found inside carry on

way. doug kammerer is taking a look. >> looking at very warm air out there right now. the temperatures are actually up a degree from last hour at least at the airport. the current temperature 50 degrees. the cold area is hagerstown at 39. still in the mid-40s across the area. it is not going to be the temperatures you need to worry about. i think we will be in the 60s tomorrow. will the be the rain and potentially a lot of it not just with this storm but another storm on thursday night and another storm on christmas weekend. i'll show you what to expect coming up. the water is back on for hundreds of customers in montgomery county. a 10-inch water main burst in gaithersburg. it took three hours for crews from the sanitary commission to fix the leak. now they are trying to repair the road. a virginia state trooper shot and killed a man in

rockbridge county today. the trooper pulled over a white chevy malibu that was reported stolen. the two got in a struggle. the driver pulled a gun and was shot by the trooper. the trooper was not hurt. the natural bridge was considered one of the seven wonders of the world. two college students trying to get out of town for the holidays were carjacked this morning. it happened in the ward circle. a 40-year-old jumped head first through the window of the car and sped off but slammed into a tree and tried to steal another car but that didn't work either. >> he got in a lady's car and tried to drive the car while sitting on her in the driver's seat and it was a stick shift. >> reporter: witnesses say a dump truck driver stopped in traffic grabbed the guy and held him. call it a capitol hill cluster. the standoff continues as

french officials are expected to order a massive recall of breast implants due to possible cancer risks. eight cases of cancer have been reported. a study out friday should reveal if there is any link. if one is found french officials will pay for the implants to be removed. the silicon is found in computers and cook ware. 300,000 women could be affected by this. a large number of police officers may run a rick for health problems and mistakes on the job because of sleep disorders. new research has been unveiled after a stud of 5,000 officers. one-third had sleep apnea or insomnia. the mayor of san francisco wants to know what happened at

>> looks like a nice party. fantastic wateather for it. tomorrow we could get to 17 degrees above average. just did the math real quick. it will be a warm day tomorrow. i think most areas will be in the 60s. some of you maybe the low to mid-60s. here we are coming up on christmas. let's show you what is happening right now. nice out there right now with the temperatures around the 50 degree mark. we have not seen the temperatures dip down all that much from where they were earlier today. the low this morning, 45 degrees. that is the average high this time of year. and 70% of the month of december has been at or above average. it has been very, very warm and it looks like that trend is only going to continue. last hour it was 49 degrees. now we are up to 50 degrees based on calm winds and cloud cover out there.

the combination of the cloud cover and the wind which i think will shift out of the south is going to make things warmer when you wake up tomorrow morning. in the south the numbers creep up. 46 in fredericksburg. 46 in manassas and the our friends in the eastern shore are around 46 degrees. storm 4 doppler radar. a couple of showers showing up here but not really reaching the ground. but what is reaching the ground is the rain back to pittsburgh and back to the west. seeing shower activity now. but watch what happens when we widen out this is the rain through south carolina and georgia and alabama and mississippi. all of that rain is going to make its way our way as the area of low pressure does the same. that gives us shower activity tomorrow. and we could see a rumble of thunder or two. nothing severe and not expecting a lot of rain tomorrow. will the not be a complete

washout. but we could see moderate downpours from time to time. there is a frontal boundary across the area. mild to the south and cooler to the north. and the front moves back to the north tomorrow. we see the warm air move in and a chance for showers with a chance for a thunderstorm or two. best chance of that is south and east of the washington, d.c. area. and the front comes through. memorially we have colder air. that is not the case this time around. an thursday we get to near 60 degrees and watch another system move up from the south. this will start to bring rain back into the area. and then the potential here for upwards of a half inch to an inch of rain thursday night into friday morning. i think this is the storm that could bring us the most rain. that storm gets out of here and we have another storm coming just in time for the holiday weekend. the forecast tomorrow more clouds, a mild start, a possible shower early but after 9:00. 40 in the coldest areas to 49 in
