local store employee. the man was trying to look urpd the door of a fitting room while a customer was trying on clothes. pat collins joins us live with the story. pat? >> reporter: barbara, a creepy dressing room crime. a man tried to take pictures of a woman taking off her clothes. she says the man was a sales associate. this is how police tell the story. the scene, the westfield montgomery shopping mall. december 10th around lunchtime, a 24-year-old woman goes to the guess store to buy jeans. a male sales associate leads her to the dressing room. there he asked her to try on new metallic pants just for him. she says she hesitantly agreed. the woman says she looks down and sees the sales associate's

shoes under the dressing room door. between the shoes, a cell phone. a cell phone that he's using to take video of her. she gets upset, opens the door. he then puts his foot over the cell phone. >> she didn't want to directly confront him. gave him an excuse so he would leave and go back to the sales floor. she got her original clothing back on, went out, completed a purchase, left the store, then a few hours later, called the police. >> reporter: police went to the guess store and retrieved surveillance video from the dressing area. it shows that sales associate crouching down near the bottom of the dressing room door in an apparent attempt to see the woman disrobing. arrested. he's 18 years old. he was picked up tuesday night charged as a peeping tom.

charges with video surveillance with intent. now those two charges are misdemeanors. if police can show thisuy tried to distribute the pictures, this could get felonious. we reached out to the guess store for comment. so far, no response. barbara, back to you. >> all right, pat, thank you for the report. in other news special needs students were rushed to the hospital after a van transporting them to school crashed. it happened on blare road northwest near kansas avenue. three vehicles were involved in the crash. six children hurt. there's no word on their conditions. police in fairfax county are looking for a serial burglar. he's hit a dozen houses so far. derrick ward is live along route 7 with more on this. derrick? >> reporter: we are here on route 7 near vienna.

police believe he is targeting neighbors. they want to catch him. he is entering the homes while the residents are asleep in their beds. there have been 11 burglaries since april. police believe the same person is responsible. some occurred in vienna, others in herndon. they show the man they believe is behind the burglaries. >> after he burglarizes the homes, he takes the credit cards from the home and uses them. each of the burglaries the suspect is entering the home through an open garage or unlocked door. >> he's able to find unlocked doors with amazing regularity. he hit four different homes, two on adjacent streets. the other was walking distance

away. the most recent last monday here on statute lane. >> he's entering in the early morning hours while the residents are inside sleeping. >> reporter: there's been no confrontation between the victim and the residents. regardless of the neighborhood, locked and secured doors are a must. >> whether it's daytime or evening, you should not be leaving open doors where anybody can access your home, even if you are running to the store for a moment, your home should be secure when you leave. >> reporter: this burglar is taking electronic items, things that are easily sold or pawned. he may be driving a light blue or silver bmw 5 series. probably 2000 or somewhere in that year range. we are live in northern virginia, back to you. >> derrick ward, thank you. a homeowner's surveillance camera captures a burglary in process. it may be linked to another one.

one. we are going to go inside the house. >> getting a taste of it. look at that. >> it's wonderful. thanks, doug. >> thank you. for the first time since saturday, there are indications that house republicans may be willing to negotiate on a short-term extension of the payroll tax cut. the white house is received 2,000 messages an hour from americans who want the tax cut extended. today, the president met with people who wrote to him. he's urging americans to use social media. now there's word that possible come mi compromise is in the works. john boehner is on a conference call right now. republican presidential hopeful newt gingrich campaigned in richmond today for virginia's gop. he is in the area to file paper work to get on the ballot for march 6th. he thinks he has a good chance of winning that primary.

>> when you get down to a choice of a massachusetts moderate and southern conservative, we have a good chance of winning the primary. >> last night, he campaigned in arlington and attended a rally in rosalind. he has a five-point lead over romney in virginia. a new opinion poll in the district is anything but holiday cheer for mayor vincent gray. he has notably low ratings. tom sherwood is in the news room with that story for us. tom? >> reporter: this isn't good news for either city leader. chairman brown ranks the worst in the poll. >> everybody excited about christmas? >> reporter: he was celebrating the season. the polling results were no reason to cheer. gray has 34% approval rating and

a high negative of 53% disapproval. some of the numbers are bad. what is your thought about it? >> well, they probably reflect what happened much earlier in the year. i recognize that. rmp the research poll taking in the last week shows that even african-americans that backed gray with more than 80% of the vote last year now show only 48% approval compared to 37% disapproval. his first year has been marred with the ongoing federal probe to the 2010 campaign and law violations. gray says he's working on crime, education, housing and jobs. >> we want to keep doing those things and show people the choices they made were the right ones. >> reporter: 23% approval rate ing for kwame brown. one of the lowest ever for city officials. the polling showed 57%

disapproved of kwame brown's work. the 13-member council is falling badly under brown. 54% approved of the council last spring, now only 30% of voters approve. a significant drop for serious political trouble for brown. he's criticized for ordering luxury suvs and is under his own federal investigation for 2008 campaign spending. >> we need to do a better job of campaigning for the residents of the district of columbia. i want to double my efforts, be in the community working for residents. >> reporter: how would mayor gray fair if running against previous mayors? we'll have that coming up on news 4 at 6:00. back to you. >> thank you, tom. the backlash over comments over michelle obama's backside. >> i find it extremely offensive. to take a personal shot at the

street." here in washington, macy's in downtown d.c. has been getting into the act with big events unveiling their displays. the public may like them for the holiday allure, the stores use them as a holiday lure. like our windows? come inside and buy our stuff. as the displays got more invo e involved, they took on a life of their own, apart from the merchandise inside. little plays unfolding on small stages, allowing us to stop the retail frenzy for a moment and enjoy the show. we have some -- >> beautiful. >> the ones in new york are over the top. >> i know. >> they are amazing. it's nice washington is starting. all the downtown department stores are coming back to life and they are starting to do stuff. it's great. the other thing that is cool is what the stores don't do, homeowners are doing. amazing. what people are doing in neighborhoods these days.

southerly flow that will allow us to warm up this evening. fredericksburg, the current temperature, 59 degrees. gaithersburg the cool spot, 52 degrees. on the radar, not a lot going on now. watch what happens when we zoom out a little bit starting to see rain to the south of charlottesville, the richmond area. you can see it along the warm front making its way to the north. west virginia, enhanced rainfall. we are getting moderate to heavy rain there. as we widen out, we are going to see the chance for heavy rain and rumbles of thunder later on tonight. we have to watch for that closely. some areas could see a half inch to inch of rain. let's go through the night. 5:00, going through 8:00, 9:00, 10:00, the rain is moving through here. by 11:00, we are looking at the rain in the moderate to heavy rage. the orange and p yellow is coming through at 10:00 to

d.c. police are trying to find out what cause add megabus to crash into a garage at union station. it happened early this morning. there were passengers on the bus at the time with minor injuries. no word on if charges will be filed. pepco says the $1 million fine is a lot but they are not going to fight it. the problems range from poor communication with customers to tree trimming. >> there are decisions we didn't necessarily agree with from the public service commission. we are beyond that. we are back to work and executing our plan.

a fast 4ward through the headlines, an employee of a guess store has been charged as a peeping tom. police say store surveilness shows the 18-year-old trying to look under the changing room door while a customer was inside. the customer says he tried to take video of her changing clothes. a hidden camera captures a burglary in progress. a green suv was captured at another house. he could be linked where neighbors witness a man in a green suv. there appears to be a compromise in the fight over the

>> thanks, doug. a congressman from wisconsin is apologizing about comments he made about the first lady's body. he referred to her large posterior. erika gonzalez is here with that story. >> as a matter of fact we posted it on twitter and facebook last night. the responses were overwhelming. take a look and see why. one thing republican congressman jim sensenbrenner of wisconsin does not care for is the government telling americans what to eat. at least that's what he's saying after a democratic operative overheard him bad mouthing first lady michele obama at reagan national airport. a woman approached the congressman and began to praise the first lady. sensenbrenner was quoted as saying obama lectures us on eating right while she has a large posterior herself.

a full one-year payroll tax deduction along with unemployment reforms, an extension of unemployment and the so-called fix for two years. we expect there will -- these members are work expeditiously to complete the one-year extension all of us want. we will ask the house and senate to approve this agreement by unanimous consent before christmas. the middle class families and small businesses are struggling. they are making sacrifices and i think this agreement will help our economy. one important provision in this measure that i want to highlight is the keystone pipeline. it would create tens of thousands of jobs in our country. this jobs project has bipartisan support in the house and senate. it's backed by a broad based coalition and i hope the

president will approve this pipeline to put those americans to work. i want to thank our members, particularly our country who remained here with the holidays to enact a full year extension of the payroll tax cut for working families. under this agreement, we are going to do that as quickly as possible. i don't think there's time for celebration. our economy is struggling. we have a lot of work ahead of us in the coming year. i want to wish the american people and all of my colleagues a very merry christmas and a happy new year. >> mr. boehner, do you have assurances -- [ inaudible ] >> all right, that was house speaker john boehner. they reached and agreement as he said and they had their backs up against the wall and they want to go home for christmas and the holidays. it's amazing how quickly you can get things done with a deadline. more on that coming up at 6:00.

clinton, maryland were honor ed for going above and beyond for helping a 5-year-old girl. >> tracee wilkins shows us how their quick-thinking saved the day and her life. >> you could hear her wheezing. she has asthma, but it's never been like that. >> we got the call for a 5-year-old, trouble breathing. asthma attack. we got on the engine and went to the house. >> she was hollering and screaming and fighting, saying she couldn't breathe. >> i tried to convince her we weren't there to hurt her. i wanted to listen to her lung sounds. >> she went out. i lost it. >> the med unit was five minutes away. >> i was going wherever he was going. that's when i figured out out it was the fire department. >> i put her on the floor here. we had one person at her head on the other side standing in the wheel well to control her head. another emt back there

every possession, play as hard as you can. one, two, three -- >> reporter: he's been out of the nba since getting fired by the philadelphia 76ers in april of last year. he's still getting paid, a lot. the remaining $3 million on his contract, which makes him probably the highest paid freshman basketball coach in the country. now he's doing a little of everything at carroll and a lot of things that were foreign to him as an nba coach. >> i missed this step going through the ranks. it's something we should go through. i started in college. there was a manager, trainers, equipment managers. i'm all of them. guard the basket. >> reporter: his high school coaching resume will likely read one in done. no matter what happens, he always has those wizards memories. >> i remember the leaders. antoine and caron and what they

did for us. you know, that's what you remember. the guys you are in the fox hole with. the coaches, the leaders of the team that mean so much to you. you know, that help you in the locker room. you know, obviously basketball wise, give it a shot against chicago. that was huge. jeffries still, the following game to steal that first round. that was big, you know. shot against utah when he turns around and throws out his arm and went in. those were big. on the plus side, lebron james was big on the negative side. >> with gill i'm going back with the memories. extreme highs and extreme lows revolve around this one player with the same franchise. >> there was always a challenge. we enjoy, i enjoy the highs. i thought the lows were just a challenge, you know?

the lows were just a bigger mountain you have to climb. how do you climb that mountain? straight up? go around? it's how do you do it? how do you conquer this challenge? you know, i thought we did a good job of tempering personalities and trying to get guys in the same path to go down the same road to win a championship. that's why i remember antoine being a leader and caron being a leader. they have big for us. >> from trying to figure out gilbert to coaching against gonzaga, he's gone full circle. kind of interesting he has a job now and gilbert aree nas does not. coaching the basketball league, they play in rockville, germ germantown. i said eddie, why don't you sit

put to bed last friday night. we have the story. >> reporter: inside a local church wednesday, a solemn crowd held candles praying for a flicker of hope as the search expands for a missing 20-month-old. miles away, a mother in pain. >> i want to see her face. i want to see her eyes. i want to feel her touch. i want to tell her i love her and i feel like i can't protect her. >> reporter: police say she was last seen friday night by her father. he told investigators he put his little girl to bed in her green polka dot p.j.s with the words, daddy's princess. wednesday, fighting icy conditions, police drained frozen ponds and search a nearby river. the fbi going door-to-door. >> we want to rule out every area we can.

>> reporter: her father released a statement saying quote, i have no idea what happened to her or who is responsible. >> she's all alone and she's scared. she ain't got nobody to turn to. >> reporter: she says she last saw her daughter a month ago. she told the associated press she was staying with her father while in rehab. she recently broke her arm from an accidental fall and was still wearing the soft cast the night she went missing. she and her father don't have a formal custody agreement. the day before ayla disappeared she filed for full time custody. >> she ended up with a broken arm and ended up missing. i wasn't trying to be secretive. i didn't want to fight with him anymore. >> reporter: police have not named any suspects. he says i shared every piece of
