country, shoppers are pushing, shoving, trampling each other trying to get their hands on a pair of sneakers. good afternoon, we must be close to christmas. i'm wendy rieger. >> i'm barbara harrison. jim and pat are off this evening. those shoes in question, the nike retro air jordans are what they are. they hit store shelves today. >> police had to fight off rowdy shoppers. >> reporter: mad dashes turned to mayhem friday. the crush of the crowd in indianapolis so strong it knocked a door off its hinges and fellow shoppers to the floor. >> i tripped over a girl that fell. a few people were on the ground. i jumped over them and kept running. >> reporter: all the pandemonium for a pair of these, air jordan 11 basketball shoes.

>> everybody was going to every store. >> reporter: scenes were similar at two other malls near indianapolis. near seattle, they used pepper spray when things got unruly. >> that's about it. everybody was trying to stop the fight. >> reporter: a real surprise given how docile others were. >> i'm going to get three pair for myself. i'm going to wear one pair and put the others up for a couple years. >> reporter: someone fired a gun into the air rattling a crowd of fellow shoppers. a crowd outside in annapolis, maryland grew to 500 before sunrise. they are reissues of the ones from 1995 the year michael jordan led the bulls to 72 wins. they are instant collectibles.

you get all the attention. >> that's different. business analysts say the sales are -- some of the sales are a bit of a panic from retailers trying to get rid of merchandise. >> people are hitting the roads and airports to make it home to see loved ones. 92 million people are expected to travel over the next couple days. tom kcostello reports. >> reporter: yet again, you are in good company if you plan to be on the move over the holiday stretch. of the 92 million people traveling 50 miles or more, 84 million of us are driving. only 5.5 million leisure travelers are flying. it's a drop of 10% from last year. you can blame the flying fees on the rough economy. none of that matters to this

family headed for florida. >> the decision to is based on we have family there. we have a free place to stay. >> we try to make it work. family is important for us. we wanted to make sure we got home for christmas. >> reporter: how much are we paying compared to last year. the lowest air fare is $210. it's up from $175 a year ago and you still have to pay for your bags. rental cars are $10 cheaper. $40 a day. gasoline is averaging $3.23 for regular. $126 will get you a room at a three-star hotel, about the same as a year ago. movie tickets haven't changed much, $10.60 on average. groceries are up 4% to 5% on average. >> typical family is living in an environment where their wages

holidays. >> doesn't feel like the holiday season it's so warm. doug kammerer is here. no snow coming, huh? >> not for us. really across the entire nation. i think, no matter where you go, it's looking good. there's a few areas of snow toward the great lakes, wisconsin seeing snow, chicago seeing snow. watch for that. i don't expect delays there. the other area of snow is new mexico. the entire country is looking good as far as travel is concerned. snow near the great lakes. down to the south in new mexico and west texas, that area could see accumulated snowfall. in dallas, if you are headed to dallas, could see rain in that region. watch out for that. the rest of the country, high and dry. a very good day out there as far as traveling is concerned. 50 degrees is the current temperature with winds north-northwest at 13 miles per hour. they are going to usher in cooler temperatures over the next couple days. we are talking numbers closer to average this time of year, still

above average. 46 degrees in leesburg. 48 in manassas. 45 degrees by 9:00. waking up tomorrow to cool temperatures. temperatures we haven't seen too much of, but once again, we are five degrees above average to start the weekend. we'll talk more about the forecast tomorrow. of course, your christmas forecast coming up. >> all right, doug. congress delivered a last minute extension of the payroll tax cut. they approved a two-month extension so 160 million americans don't have to pay 2% on income taxes. it's a victory for president obama but it did not come without a fight. nbcs jennifer johnson reports. >> reporter: it was yet another washington stand off. affecting 160 million american workers. >> read for the third time, it

passed. >> reporter: house republicans caved in. after a quick vote, it was extended two months. the president later signed off on the deal. >> this continues to be a make or break moment for the middle class in this country. we have to roll up our sleeves together, democrats and republicans to make sure the economy is growing and make sure that more jobs are created. >> reporter: the fix is only temporary. the president told congress he'll work with them on a 12 month extension. >> i hope this congress has had a very good learning experience, especially those newer to this body. everything we do around here does not have to wind up in a fight. >> reporter: pressure to get this passed built all week from the american public e-mailing and tweeting the white house and congress in huge numbers. it means more money for struggling americans and

another mild afternoon. the average high is 45 degrees. just about everybody is above average. that's not the case tomorrow. current temperatures 48 in manassas. honeytown, 49. annapolis coming in at 51 degrees. storm 4 doppler radar, nothing to show you across the area. our storm last night got in and out of here very, very quickly. some areas picked up well over a half inch of rain. here are the clouds. they are coming across the mountains a bit. they call them nice wave clouds out oth of the northwest. it's going to allow cooler temperatures to move in. mostly to partly cloudy skies. tomorrow, the winds die down. we'll see cooler weather tomorrow. i think some sunshine out there. a mixture of sun and clouds saturday. more sun and clouds on sunday as santa runs on through.

the d.c. air guard. they were reunited with their families just in time before christmas. we have more from joint base andrews in maryland. >> reporter: it was definitely the perfect gift. loved ones of the d.c. air guards 113th wing just wanted their loved ones home safely from afghanistan in time for the holidays. today, they got that wish. an emotional homecoming at andrews air force base as the guardsmen reunited with friends and family after a two month separation. many were hopeful they would make it home in time. in the military, plans can always change. they often change at the last minute. you can see the joy and relief as relatives caught sight of their loved ones for the first time this morning. >> it is one of the best gifts. i'm grateful. my children wanted their dad to be home for christmas. that's one thing they asked for. >> happy to be home. >> home for the holidays? >> it was cutting it close, but i'm happy to be home.

redskins taking on the vikings at fedex field. >> thanks, doug. >> thank you. black friday gets a lot of press about being one of the craziest shopping days of the year. there's another day that gets overlooked. december 26th. that's the date everyone goes back to the mall to return the gifts they were not happy to get. there will be plenty of company out there. a consumers report predicts 20% of us will get lousy gifts. here is chris. >> reporter: certainly the reaction to most gifts will be like this. >> look at me. >> a recent survey concluded up to 49 million americans will get what can safely be called a lousy gift this year. >> the thing that is don't fit. the things that are ugly. >> todd marks conducted the

survey. he said lousy gifts are when retailers are prepared for a flood of returns starting the day after christmas. >> one in five americans will spend two or more hours returning gifts this year. >> that means consumers need to be properly prepared for returns, too, starting with the obvious. if you are giving a gift, get a receipt. $3.5 billion in return fraud last year, he says don't be offended by tighter return deals this year. think before ripping it open to help avoid restocking fees should you return it. consider your favorite charity as a destination for that not so favorite gift. we're talking new gifts here. if people get a gift they really don't like, you know what? if it's new and in good shape, donate it. >> reporter: that's what nearly one in five americans plan to do with a gift they don't want.
