good afternoon. welcome to news4 at 4:00. >> the rain started this morning and it's been falling off and on all day. >> chuck bell is in storm center 4 tracking the weather for us. >> hey there. a very gloomy looking day to be outside today after a stretch of beautiful sunny weather. it seems all of the more horrible that it is so cloudy outside today. rain will fall every now and then and it's been coming down pretty much since the sun came up this morning. it will continue here for the next couple of hours as well. we look outside on our city camera view, full cloud cover out there. the rain is starting to ease up just a little bit especially out toward the west of washington, but still plenty of cloud cover out there. 54 degrees right now here in town. winds are out of the southwest at 11 miles per hour. as you can see on storm 4 doppler live radar showing moderate rain showers especially down into southern maryland. moderate rain right now and plenty of rain across charles

county, maryland, as well over toward charlotte hall and as you get into fairfax county, the rain tapers up a bit as you get into western fairfax and a break in the action out toward the blueridge. that's not going to be the complete end of the rain. there will be more rain chances lingering through about 9:00 this evening as that next little patch now entering southwest virginia rolls our way. there's also been a little bit of severe weather across the outer banks of north carolina. we're stuck in the rain here for much of the next several hours. rainfall amounts today have averaged between a quarter and half inch of rain. we have another tenth or so on the way. temperatures really warm in southern maryland. 37 in northern maryland. that colder air is coming our way. your evening planner is soggy and chilly. temperatures into the 40s in the next couple of hours. some ferocious winds coming our way for tomorrow. we'll detail that part of the forecast coming up in just a bit. for now, if you are expecting someone home, they are stuck in traffic.

>> thank you, chuck. we are just a week away now from the iowa caucuses and the official start of the presidential campaign. gop candidates are out there fighting for every possible vote with speeches and phone calls and campaign ads. as janelle klein reports, they are all determined to pull ahead in a race that's tighter than ever. >> reporter: seven contenders, seven days. in just a week iowans will choose a republican candidate for president and campaigns are intense. polls show a tight race between mitt romney, newt gingrich and ron paul with paul now in the lead. >> there's a large contingent of iowa republicans who are really reacting a ining and respondein he's talking about. >> a couple weeks ago i was a distant third in iowa. you don't know what will happen in this process. >> reporter: especially with candidates pulling out all of the stops.

michele bachmann and rick perry are on statewide bus tours. >> part-time congress cut their time in washington in half. >> reporter: most have new commercials. together the candidates have spent $10 million on tv ads in the past month alone but sometimes ads can backfire. >> it doesn't always benefit the person doing the spending. if one candidate spends a lot of money to attack another, it might benefit a third person because voters don't always like the negative ads. >> reporter: nobody is afraid to attack. gingrich today fired back at romney. >> to have him run a commercial that questions my conservatism, i mean, i've been a conservative my entire life. >> reporter: gingrich slams romney now, at one time he supported a key romney initiative. in a 2006 memo he praised romney's massachusetts health care law, a law gingrich now criticizes. in the end iowa's choice may not predict the future.

only one nonincumbent candidate has won iowa and gone on to become president. a short time ago nebraska senator ben nelson will retire at the end of his term. he's been in his office since 2001. nelson is expected to make his exit and will likely provide an opportunity for republican candidate to take that seat. between 100 and 120 sears and kmart stores are shutting down after terrible holiday sales. sears holding cooperation which operates kmart stores say the closing will generate $140 to $170 million in sales. sears cited lackluster electronics and home appliance sales. sears has not said which stores will be closing. the retailer won't discuss how many jobs, if any, will be cut. if you went shopping yesterday, you were part of

history in the making. the national retail federation says the day after christmas was the busiest shopping day of the year. it was also part of a sales season that is up 3.8% over last year. analysts say much of the increase in sales was driven by deep discounts. yesterday was also a big day for returns and exchanges. by some estimates 10% of the items bought during the holidays will be returned. federal officials trying to stop a major hacking attack from happening again. thousands of credit card numbers were stolen from a security firm this christmas and the group claiming responsibility says this is just the beginning. nbc's justice correspondent pete williams has the details. >> reporter: alan barr of texas was stunned to discover that just before christmas red cross records showed he recently contributed $200 with his credit card. something he didn't actually do. while many of the victims in this latest hacker attack were

corporate clients of the company stratfor, individual subscribers discovered that their information was taken too. >> they could have ruined our christmas. >> reporter: the hackers tried to steal $700,000 in all from his account. most of the charitable contributions will be returned because they were stolen to start with. the attack is a major embarrassment for stratfor that shut down its website saying it was undergoing maintenance. the group unanimous was clearly relishing the attention claiming in a statement that there's "plenty more havoc in store for the rest of the week." it called for the release of army private bradley manning who is accused of passing on thousands of classified government documents to wikileaks, the website the hacker group has aided in the past and they have released hundreds of clients and names of

individual subscribers along with credit card numbers and other private data. >> it's a serious breach. we're talking about a lot of people's identity including people in very sensitive positions in the defense is department, intelligence agencies and private companies and even foreign embassies. >> reporter: a twitter feed says celebrities, singers and reality show star are among the next victims but because the group is so decentralized, there's no way to verify that claim. >> the texas company stratfor is putting systems in place to prevent something like this happening again. security experts say what's happening is a warning to all big companies to make sure sensitive client data is well protected. on wall street, stocks ended in flat note. the dow jones industrial average fell one point. the nasdaq gained six and s&p 500 closed less than a point higher. investigators in connecticut now know what caused a deadly christmas day fire that killed five people including three children. investigators say the blaze

spread from a log in the fireplace. there were no smoke detectors and no fire alarms. >> reporter: outside of the stanford home where madonna badger and their family planned to celebrate christmas sits flowers and stuffed animals remembering the lives lost in the tragic fire. this morning stanford fire chief told us before the home was reduced to rubble, investigators used these ladders to hold up the floors to retrieve the bodies of the five victims. firefighters tried to save badger's three children who apparently tried to escape themselves. firefighters were forced to stop their efforts when the flames became too intense. >> bear in mind these firefighters are dressed in totally encapsulated gear. the best on the market. the flame and heat pushed them out. imagine what those kids went through. >> we're also told that badger's father attempted to save his

granddaughter but died while trying. >> he was in between a roof rafters. there was debris on top of him. we found him just outside of the window just inside the window we found one of the little girls. >> they would have celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary the day after christmas. >> once again, a news conference just a few moments ago, officials said the house had no working smoke detectors. the fire was so horrendous that even some of the firefighters involved are seeking counseling. baby sitter in indiana beat a little girl to death with a brick. today 39-year-old michael plumadore admitted to killing alanna lemmon on december 22nd and stuffed her body in trash bags and hid her in the freezer. he is ordered without bail. the younger girl and two others sisters were staying with plumadore because their mother was sick with the flu.

you got to love a cold rain. >> yes. every now and then it's a good thing. >> no, chuck, no. >> what? >> we didn't need the rain? >> no. we're more than seven inches ahead in rainfall as we get ready to close out the year. >> you have to love a cold rain. >> didn't either of you get a good book for christmas? i got a good book for christmas and had no chance to read it and today would have been the ultimate day to read a good book. nonetheless, a lot of people do not care for the rain. they are feeling seasonally affected after four or five days in the row of sunshine. it could be worse. had it been cold enough, this is what we would be dealing with. this is what it looked like one year ago today. the big blizzard that went right above us. we got almost nothing out of it. philadelphia up the eastern seaboard into new york city got just hammered a year ago.

some places 18 to 20 inches of snow. ba boy. that could have been us. if only we could get cold air in the mid-atlantic. today it's just all in the form of rain. not even close to the freezing mark here in washington. we're at 54 degrees right now. courtesy of a southwest wind averaging 14 miles an hour us r ushering in much warmer air. a big spread of temperatures across the area. annapolis, 57 degrees. college park, silver spring, 54. not far back to the west though, leesburg and dulles, down into the low 40s. that's a 10 or 12-degree drop over the first 20 miles. temperatures are back into the upper 30s across parts of northern maryland up into the panhandle of west virginia. just warm enough to be rain and all rain. moderate at times now. prince george's county, northern calvert county, these showers are racing off to the east so right along route 301 and route 50 going out toward annapolis, a lot of wet roadways out there. most of the heavier rain is now off of i-95 and pushing

eastbound on the northern neck. dry conditions now toward culpeper and blueridge that way. more showers in far southwestern virginia. most of these will die out before they get here. if they live long enough to reach us, they'll be here in four to five to six hours time frame from now. if you have a flight coming in from later tonight up the eastern seaboard, a messy go. big flight days, boston, new york city, philadelphia, newark, new jersey. snow showers heading out toward detroit and cleveland. severe weather of all things down across the outer banks of north carolina. a lot going on. a very energized storm system as it goes racing on by tonight it will clear the rain out of here before midnight. it will clear the skies out before you get up tomorrow morning and as it pulls away, a very steep pressure gradient sets up so we'll start out dry and breezy. tomorrow will be wind whipped for sure. plenty of sunshine east of the mountains. plenty of cloud cover for you folks up in high spots and then noticeably colder weather for

blames poor sales and a drop in layaway purchases. no word on which stores will close or how many jobs might be cut. on wall street stocks ended on a lackluster note following last week's strong rally. the dow jones industrial lost two points. nasdaq picked up six and s&p 500 ended with no change. in great britain, queen elizabeth's husband, prince phillip, is resting at home. >> he left the hospital after being rushed to the hospital late on friday night. >> reporter: this morning the queen's husband, prince phillip, got his wish to be released from the hospital after spending four nights there. his treatment for a blocked coronary artery was a minimally invasive procedure and often patients are released the next day but given that the prince is 90 years old, despite his great health and great spirits and great desire to leave, doctors did want to keep him under observation.

this morning they allowed him to be driven to the palace. a beautiful cozy place the royal family loves where they can be out of the public eye and spend the rest of the holiday together. this is the first time prince phillip has missed christmas there. one of the busiest members of the royal family making between 200 to 300 public appearances every year. it's possible that after this, he may scale back a little more. back to you. we now know what caused the death of the late rapper heavy d. the los angeles county coroner's office found he died from a pulmonary embolism. the coroner's office says the clot was most likely the result of an extended airplane ride. the rapper just returned on a long flight from london to l.a. after performing at a michael jackson tribute concert.

his death has been classified as a natural death. unanimous actress is suing the popular internet movie data base because she says they published her real age without her consent and lost work because of it that actress identified as a texas resident of asian descent looks much younger than she is. the lawsuit claimed she only provided her real information when she signed up for imob pro. she's suing for a million dollars. a spokesperson for amazon declined to comment saying they never discuss litigation. yesterday at 4:00 we told you about the man who found ten grand at the las vegas airport and spent two weeks tracking down the owner of the cash. it turns out that guy grew up here in the d.c. area. news4 jim vance talked to mitch gilbert on the phone during our 11:00 news last night. >> i got to tell you, mr.

beautiful picture of the rainbow there. you can see a second arch to the right of that one. where is the end of the rainbow? check out this picture from the white house. bathed in golden sunshine here in the late afternoon hours. sun is going down in only seven minutes and that's what you need if you want a great picture of the rainbow, you need the sun low down into the sky and that's what we have out there right now. current temperature a mild 52 degrees at national airport. here are runways at national. this is just on the other side of the river there out near where they park the presidential helicopter. this is a great looking shot. if you have a window close by s take a look at it. the back end of the rain is just coming through national airport. that's the reason for that vivid rainbow. the skies have cleared out temporarily back down to the central parts of virginia and one pretty stout line of thunderstorms now rolling into southern maryland so you folks hunting town and calvert county down toward leonard town, st. mary city, sullivans island, be

on the lookout. not severe yet but this line will have 35 to 45 miles per hour wind gusts associated with it. then we have break in the action coming in and more showers now into far southwestern virginia. a lot of that will dry out before it gets here. i don't think it will be done completely with rain chances until 10:00 or so tonight. severe weather along the outer banks of south carolina. one thing to watch is line of thunderstorms through st. mary's county over the next 35 to 40 minutes. near 60 in st. mary's county and near freezing in cumberland. lows into the 30s. breezy after midnight and real windy around le y around here t. gusts well over around 40 along ridge tops that could cause power outage issues. highs in the 40s tomorrow. even with wind and sun tomorrow, that wind will have windchills in the upper 20s and low 30s during the day with the sunshine

planet could be this cute? trying to roll around. getting a massage. and maybe his favorite pastime, napping with his little tongue hanging out. but his name means sea ice. the baby polar bear born at a denmark zoo and in his one month of life he'swinning admirers around the world thanks to intern internet video. doesn't get much more adorable than this. some call him unbearably cute weighing less than two pounds at birth when his mother couldn't produce milk, zookeepers stepped in around the clock tending to his every need. now he's a hefty seven pounds. there's a giant bear in there waiting to come out one day that will be more than 100 times his size at around half a ton. it calls to mind one other thing

this baby polar bear, yes, the beloved berlin superstar who inspired songs and merchandising who eventually became a little too big to snuggle. he died suddenly in march at 4 years old. in captivity they can win 40 years and there are only estimated 25,000 polar bears left in the world. so zookeepers are giving him all of the care he can handle. what a job. to ensure that whether or not this guy also becomes a rock star of the animal kingdom, he'll be as happy as this for a long, long time. the polar bear that is melting hearts by the millions. michel >> he's cute. i'll give it to you. >> he's cute. >> it's a bear. >> a giant bear there and their

producer accused of murdering his wife in cancun last year will head to mexico to stand trial. bruce beresford-redman maintains his innocence but he's not fighting extradition either. nbc's george lewis has the latest. >> reporter: beresford-redman, his wife, monica, and their children everyone staying at a resort in cancun last year. three days after she was reported missing, her body was found in a sewer at the resort. here on "today" last week, beresford-redman's mother spoke out in defense of her son. >> he's a good man. he's never been in trouble with the law. he's not a violent person. despite difficulties in the marriage, everyone has difficulties, usually there's still great deal of love. >> reporter: mexican authorities say there was evidence the couple fought over his alleged infidelity and there were scratches on his body and he

waited until the day after his wife reportedly went missing to notify authorities. >> monica, when she has a day out, she has a day out. she worked nights as you know in her fraurestaurant. he fell asleep with the children. >> reporter: mexican police say they found evidence that bruce use his key card to enter and leave the hotel room nine times on the night of his wife's disappearance. he maintains that's because he was searching for monica. >> he was looking for her. he would come back to check on the children. he did that numerous time. >> reporter: a federal judge in los angeles did not find beresford-redman's arguments about his innocence compelling enough to block his extradition to mexico. the lawyer for monica's family applauded that. >> you can't really call it a happy occasion since their sister was brutally murdered. this is an important day. it's an important day for
