picture that we saw just from our city camera view about ten minutes ago. this is looking right over the north end of the runways at national airport. a beautiful shaft of light from that rainbow coming down. the rain showers are pushing their way to the east. we're not 100% clear of the rain chances yet but we're almost there. outside we go then. 52 degrees right now. temperatures will really start to fall now that the rain has come to an end and cooler air is coming our way. 52 at national airport. the biggest concern weatherwise for short-term is across st. mary's county. strong showers with one or two rumbles of thunder. those showers will be in calvert beach in the next five or six minutes. down into st. mary's county, be on the lookout for that. winds could gust upwards of 40 to 45 miles an hour with that one line of cells as it rakes across the far southern tip of st. mary's county. more severe weather across the

when he refused to hand it over. 23-year-old quinton tyrone perry jr., father of two little girls was shot and killed on christmas morning. >> he was a family man. >> reporter: relatives believe perry's killer was after his $300 coat which he received as a gift from a friend on christmas eve. >> all of this overcoat. >> reporter: that's all human life is worth? >> it's worth more than that but people don't treasure life no more. >> reporter: shots rang out just after 11:00 a.m. at southview drive and southview court in oxon hill. relatives say perry had been visiting his girlfriend and children in the area. he walked to a nearby convenience store and was heading back when he was gunned down. >> i am going to the store. i be right back. he went to the store and never made it back. >> reporter: perry's father

tells me he was on the phone talking to his brother in south carolina when he was shot and killed. the brother says he heard a commotion, the phone apparently hit the ground and then the line went dead. this isn't the first time perry has been the victim of a violent crime. in march he was stabbed in the thigh at the gallery place metro in d.c. the attackers were after his cell phone. his father has this message for the community. >> you know who done this to my son, don't be afraid to report it. it needs to be reported. the guy needs to be off the street for everybody else. >> reporter: family members and friends will gather here at the shooting scene at 7:00 this evening for a vigil. the family is also set up a memorial fund through bank of america. they say they need help in paying funeral expenses and help in providing for those two little girls who were left behind. reporting live from oxon hill, darcy spencer, news4.

firefighters in frederick county are trying to figure out what caused a pair of suspicious garage fires overnight. the first one broke out in 3700 block of singleton terrace. they arrived on the scene and saw the second scene a couple blocks away. the flames heavily damaged detached garages. no one was injured but some cars are a total loss. given how close these fires happened to each other, they are considered suspicious. d.c. fire investigators say overheated brakes caused smoke in a wheel on a freight train. this happened just before 11:00 this morning near the 3200 block of d street southeast. trains were stopped in both directions while crews inspected the trains and checked for any possible hazmat leaks. no one was injured and regular rail service has since resumed. the man accused of killing two people and kidnapping a toddler on christmas eve had been let out of jail just a day

before those murders were committed. clemmons, 27 years old, was arraigned today in a court in richmond. he's accused of shooting a 60 year old and a 56 year old. police say clemmons then stole an suv in which a little 2-year-old child was in the back. that boy was later found. he was not injured. according to the richmond times dispatch, investigators believe that clemmons was engaged in a robbery attempt at the time of the murders. president of a pain management clinic in chantilly, virginia, has been indicted for allegedly supplying patients with huge amounts of the drug x oxycontin selling for $80 a pill. he's not a doctor but according to the federal indictment, he sometimes referred to himself as a doctor. chris gordon has our report.

>> reporter: chantilly specialist limited of virginia is a medical practice that specializes in pain management. it says that he has a master of law degree from george washington university law school. this federal indictment charges him with conspiracy to distribute controlled substances. the indictment allegation that under his direction, one of his nurse practitioners here prescribed more than 800,000 oxycontin narcotic based pills in one year. more than 12,000 to a single customer. at chantilly specialists, we met a patient who agreed to be interviewed if we didn't use her name or show her face. do you come here for pain

men snatched a necklace she was wearing and then ran away. after an investigation, police determined that she made it up. the claimed assault and robbery was in fact stemming from a domestic incident. we are just a week away now from the iowa caucuses and the official start of the 2012 presidential race. all seven gop candidates are fighting for their party's nomination. in a race that's become increasingly close. latest polls show mitt romney, newt gingrich and ron paul in a dead heat with paul having a slight edge. despite that, gingrich and romney continue to go at each other. gingrich defended himself against a recent romney ad. >> to have him on a commercial questioning my conservatism. i've been a conservative my entire life. >> all together the republican candidates have spent $10 million on tv ads for the month of december alone.

as republicans battle for their party's nomination, president obama is getting a big head start on fund-raising. the democratic official says the president's re-election campaign is on track to raise $60 million for the fourth quarter of 2011. if that happens, president obama and democratic national committee would have picked up more than 200 million for the year. the campaign's total target goal is $750 million. >> more than 100 sears and kmart stores will be closing because the company says they didn't do well over the holiday season in terms of sales. the company that owns those two chains is making the move in order to raise some cash they say after they call a dismal shopping season. they're not saying yet which stores are going to close. >> reporter: good evening, jim. sears is the only store in the lot behind me after the mall in

the deadly fire on christmas day that killed three children and their grandparents in connecticut apparently was sparked by embers from a fireplace. at a news conference just a few minutes ago in stanford, connecticut, investigators say the hot embers had been disguarded near a first floor mud room and that's what set off the fire. the grandfather had gotten out of the house but he was killed when he went back on the roof trying to save the children. because of the intensity of that fire, firefighters were unable to rescue anyone. >> after 37 1/2 years, 38 years on the job, you never are prepared for anything like this. it's heartbreaking. i had to recall 70 firefighters

today for debriefing and most of them broke down. >> counseling was available for those firefighters to help them deal with that tragedy. this is a somber day for the family of marine staff sergeant vincent j. bell. the 28-year-old marine who is from detroit was buried this morning at the arlington national cemetery. bell was killed last month when a bomb exploded near his patrol area in afghanistan. sergeant vincent j. bell was buried in section 60 of the cemetery alongside the majority of victims from the iraq and afghan wars. he had joined the marines in 2001 and was on his fifth tour. final preparations under way now for the funeral of north kor korea's leader. his state funeral will take place in that country's capital over the next two days. hundreds of thousands of koreans are expected to participate. at the same time, mourners continue lining up to pay tribute to him. since his death, tens of

from a company called stratfo. >> the information includes individuals who work for the defense department, private companies and foreign embassies. it's a wake-up call says one expert to protect yourself against cybercrime. it was a cyberattack with a message. a loose knit group of hackers called unanimous stealing up to 4,000 names, home addresses and credit card information from stratfor. >> it is an embarrassment and companies have to make sure that they are responsible enough to not wait until something like this happens. to take the kind of systematic pro-active strategic approach. >> andy purdy once headed up a top security post and says all companies need to understand they're not islands and everyone is at risk.

>> i think every major company in the country has been infiltrated by malicious actors. the question is just whether or not they know it. >> reporter: the same goes for individuals. a quick survey of shoppers in this hardware store turned up identity theft victims. >> i was in north carolina and someone in new jersey spent $300. went back to the same store twice. >> reporter: others believe it's just a matter of time. >> all these things that make our lives easier with having bank accounts online but puts you at risk. >> reporter: in the case of stratfor, they took credit cards and used them to make contributions to charities. a lesson to all who own credit cards. >> at a minimum consumers have to make sure every month they track their credit card bills and their bank account bills to see whether or not there are any transactions that they didn't authorize.

even if it's a charitable contribution. they need to keep track of what's happened. >> the fbi is now investigating the breach. the company's website shows a banner saying the site is "undergoing maintenance." the search continues for a blind man who is missing. his name is mitchell smith. he came to d.c. earlier this month to visit relatives and he was last seen two weeks ago getting on an amtrak train at union station, a train bound for birmingham, alabama. his family says that he got off at an amtrak station in north carolina but they have not heard from him or been able to contact him for ten days now. mr. smith is 33 years old, 5'11", slim build. he carries a red and white cane and sometimes wears dark glasses. if you have any information that could help find him, you're asked to call police. a two-alarm fire damaged one

of howard county's oldest running motels. the fire broke out around 9:00 last night at the white elk motel. everyone inside was able to get out. there were no injuries reported. it took about 60 firefighters to get the blaze under control. route 1 was closed for several hours. several apartments or motel rooms rather were damaged. the white elk motel has been in business since the 1950s. friends and family members of a u.s. park police officer who died in the line of duty will get together to remember his life tonight. the viewing will take place from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. for sergeant michael bane. it will be at the church of the nativity in burke, virginia. he suffered a fatal heart attack last month while trying to rescue a man under the key bridge. funeral services will be held tomorrow also at the church of the nativity followed by a processional through d.c. the officer was a 19-year veteran of the force. he leaves behind a wife and a

son. montgomery county police have identified the man gunned down this morning in white oak in a neighborhood there. they still don't know why he was gunned down. they have identified the victim as a 24-year-old. megan mcgrath has reaction from people that live nearby. >> reporter: the intersection of stewart and april lane. police tape blocks off the street. just down the hill in front of the metro bus stop lies the body of the victim. many neighbors were asleep when the gunfire started. they awoke to the sound of rapid shots. >> i was sleeping. when i woke up, i heard rapid fire of six shots. it sounded very close so i didn't know -- i didn't go outside. i looked outside my window. >> evidence technicians cordoned off a section of the parking lot across the street from where the victim was found. several shell casings could be found on the ground. a specially trained dog sniffed around the crime scene. >> i can't confirm where this

on wall street, stocks endsed on a flat note on the start of this week's trading. dow jones industrial average was down two points. the nasdaq picked up six points. s&p 500 no change. some good economic news. consumer confidence is at its highest point since april. the monty survey by the conference board says the index climbed nearly ten points last

hundreds of volunteers in pasadena are putting final touches on floats and preparing for the annual tournament of roses parade. the artists are cutting and painting and gluing flowers and other greenery to masterpieces for this parade steeped in tradition. they turn those things into masterpieces. it's the 123rd year for the parade. when it first started way back

in 1927, it was broadcast on radio. for the past 85 years, nbc has aired the parade. for a local family, the tournament of roses parade has a very special meaning this year. the family from virginia will be riding on a float in honor of a family member lost. paul was an organ donor and because he was a donor, three lives were saved. his wife and daughter will celebrate his wife and the difference he made to others at the parade on monday. >> reporter: a gentle bend in washington and old dominion trail, a turning point for the family who five years ago paul was biking this trail when he crashed. he later died. they find solis knowing that he died doing something he loved. he rode 2,000 miles a year.

>> biking was one of his favorite activities. the trail was his favorite biking spot. >> reporter: and there would be something else to help remember paul. a red heart above his driver's license says it all. paul was an organ donor. >> that choice that we made just by checking that box over 25 years ago really became an important decision. >> reporter: paul's liver, kidneys and heart valves went to recipients who needed them to live. skin and bone were also donated. >> it was really important to him. he wanted to help people with parts he couldn't use anymore at that point. live on in someone else. >> reporter: nationwide the 100 millionth organ donor was registered. it's a milestone but donors are still needed. >> 18 people die every day because there aren't enough organs to go around. >> next month his wife and daughter will ride a bike for donate life america in the
