area for now. the lone exception is far southern most st. mary's county still some heavy rain right there on the southern tip of the county. that's almost all but off the land mass right now. that's good news. a little bit of light rain on route 50 on the chesapeake bay bridge on the eastern shore. a few sprinkles up toward college park and to the north of buoy there and a few more raindrops can be found near manassas city and manassas park and light rain to the south and west. some of those drops may ride up the shenandoah valley and bring us lingering drop chances between 6:00 and midnight tonight. after 10:00, 11:00, 12:00, the majority of the rain will be done. temperatures not so bad now from washington southbound but the colder air up north is coming our way. lows tonight will be in the 30s. that wind kicking up will make for a very chilly start tomorrow morning. be ready for some very high winds tomorrow afternoon. we'll talk more about how strong the winds will be and the seven-day forecast into 2012. all that coming up. >> we'll see you in a bit.

thanks. the president of a pain management clinic in chantilly, virginia, has been indicted on drug charges. he's accused of supplying patients with huge amounts of the drug oxycontin. the indictment says he kept doing it even after he learned of numerous overdoses and possibly even four deaths. chris gordon has our report. >> chant ililly limited specials in pain management. it says he has a master of law degree from george washington university law school. this federal indictment charges him with conspiracy to distribute controlled substances. the indictment allegation that under his direction, one of his nurse practitioners here at chantilly specialists prescribed more than 800,000 oxycontin narcotic based pills in one year.

more than 12,000 to a single customer. at chantilly specialist located in the 4200 block of lafayette center drive, we met a patient who agreed to be interviewed if we didn't use her name or show her face. do you come here for pain management? >> i do. >> reporter: do you get oxycontin? >> yes, i do. >> reporter: he's been indicted for illegally distributing drugs. >> i'm pretty shocked. >> reporter: did he ever refer to himself as a doctor? >> yes. >> reporter: did you know he's not a doctor? >> no, i did not. >> reporter: after she went into chantilly specialists she came out and told us -- >> they are denying everything and shredding papers. >> reporter: neighbors who work in the office park where chantilly specialists is located say they have seen people come here in cars with license plates from other states. >> they look suspicious pulling up in vans and driving up and down the street real fast. >> reporter: we informed chantilly specialists limited that we're preparing this story

and we were told there is no response. in chantilly, virginia, i'm chris gordon, news4. >> the patient you saw in that report in order to get her prescription for oxycontin she was required to return to the clinic each month and she would be charged $250 for each office visit. turning to politics now in just seven days voters in iowa will head to the polls and officially kick off the race for the white house. gop candidates are out in the state fighting for every vote with speeches, telephone calls and tv ads. janelle klein joins us on capitol hill with more on this race that's just getting tighter. >> reporter: no question about that, aaron. there's no front runner at this year's iowa caucus and no letting up for republican candidates on the campaign trail. with so many iowa voters still undecided, the winner of this year's caucus is anybody's guess. seven contenders, seven days. in just a week iowans will

choose a republican candidate for president and campaigns are intense. polls show a tight race between mitt romney, newt gingrich and ron paul with paul now in the lead. >> there's a large contingent responding to what he's talking about. >> romney's staff says he's a sure winner but he isn't overconfident. >> i was a distant third in iowa. you don't know what's going to happen in this process. >> reporter: especially with all of the candidates pulling out all of the stops. michele bachmann and rick perry are both on statewide bus tours. >> a part-time congress cut their pay in half. cut their time in washington in half. >> reporter: most have new commercials. together the candidates have spent $10 million on tv ads in the past month alone. sometimes ads can backfire. >> what doesn't always benefit the person doing the spending. one of the things that we've seen in past campaigns is that if one candidate spends a lot of money to attack another, it might benefit a third person because voters don't always like

the negative ads. >> reporter: nobody is afraid to attack. gingrich today fired back at romney. >> to have him run a commercial that questions my conservatism, i mean, i've been a conservative my entire life. >> reporter: at one time gingrich supported a key romney initiative. in a 2006 membermemo, he praise romney's massachusetts health care law. a law he now criticizes. iowa's choice may not predict the future. in the last 40 years only one republican nonincumbent candidate won iowa and went on to win the presidency. >> republican candidates battle for their party's nomination and president obama enjoying a new high note. the president has a 47% approval rating. 45% of those polled say they disapprove of his job. this is first time since july that mr. obama's approval rating was higher than his disapproval

rating. new numbers come following the president's battle with house gop over extending payroll tax benefits. there's a new report out that shows the wealth gap between lawmakers and their constituents is growing. according to an analysis by "the new york times," most americans saw net worth fall by 8% between 2004 and 2010 but members of congress in that time reported a 15% jump in that same period. in congress the median net worth is now $913,000. ten lawmakers of $100 million or more in the bank. republican from california tops that list. more than 100 sears and kmart stores will close their doors for good. those chains have been struggling with declining profits for some time now and competition from rivals like walmart and target hurt their holiday sales. we get more now on the fallout.

erica? >> reporter: good evening. the sears store behind me has been a stand alone store for the past six years. despite losing the mall here in landover a few years ago, customers say this one store is better than none at all. after dismal holiday profit reports emerged, sears holdings corporation announced it will close up to 120 stores including kmart locations. >> that's not good. that's bad for the economy. it's bad for people who work for the stores and bad for customers like myself who shop the stores. now where do we go? >> reporter: the company's ceo says "given our performance and difficult economic environment especially for big ticket items, we intend to implement a series of actions to reduce ongoing expenses." this woman has been a faithful sears shopper for years. she says not even walmart can compare to its prices. if this store goes down, she and

other customers may find that they'll have to forfeit bargains and convenience. you have kmart open and target open, why do you come to kmart? >> closer to me. >> reporter: despite half a million dollars in layaway angel purchases, kmart acquired by sears six years ago reported a nearly 5% drop in electronics, apparel and layaway purchases this quarter. which stores will close is not yet known but with as many as 120 on the chopping block, numerous people could quickly find themselves unemployed. >> that's very devastating. i myself was out of work for almost two years. i understand the affect of that and it's not good for the economy. >> reporter: sears says that it could stand to gain anywhere from $140 million to $170 million in liquidation sales alone and that's not counting what they could make if they rent or sell the properties

where those stores are located. back to you. >> thank you. investigators in frederick county are trying to figure out what sparked a pair of garage fires that are considered suspicious. first one broke out last night in the 3700 block of singleton terrace. fire crews arrived and saw the second fire in the 3900 block of addison woods road a couple blocks away. in both cases the flames did a lot of damage to detached garages. nobody was injured but some cars are a total loss. the damage is estimated now at $130,000. given how close the fires are to each other, investigators say they're suspicious. a woman charged with filing a false police report after she claimed two men broke into her home and assaulted her. police spocresponded yesterday morning for a reported home

fireplace left inside a mudroom of the house that started the massive blaze that claimed the lives of lomer and pauline johnson and their three granddaughters. >> the fire entered the house is quickly and spread throughout the first floor and up two interior vertical openings trapping the occupants on the upper floors. >> the girl's mother and her friend were able to escape. borcina did try to help the children flee. >> he said he delivered t ee ee girls down to the second floor but the girls panic and one obviously ran upstairs. one went another direction. he lost sight of them. he exited the structure. >> reporter: when the flames were put out, firefighters found one child on the third floor and another one with her grandmother at the bottom of a stairwell between the second and third

floors. the grandfather and a third child were found near an open window. >> he obviously found one of the young children because he guided her to the window that he went through. when he stepped through that window, his life ended. it looks like he fell face forward because that's the position we had found him in. >> reporter: fire officials believe the fire could have started burning between 3:30 a.m. and 4:52 a.m. when 911 was called. >> there's a huge fir at the house next door to us. >> what's the address of the emergency? >> i got cut off. i was calling about a major fire with people in the house. >> reporter: while there may have been smoke detectors, officials are not sure they went off. >> we don't believe there were any fire detection systems activated in the house at this time. >> the town's fire chief said most firefighter broke down during their depreviobriefing d the fire.

a powerful earthquake hit southeastern russia today near the border manage olay. people are allowed to spend a night in a school over concerns about aftershocks. miners have all been ordered to leave the mines. a group linked to al qaeda is claiming responsibility for a recent wave of attacks in iraq. in a statement online, an organization called the islamic state of iraq says that the assaults last week were meant to support sunni muslims in prisons and in memory of those who were executed. the coordinated attacks targeted markets, grocery stores, cafes and government buildings in shiite neighborhoods. it's the first major attack since u.s. troops completed a

son. a former reality show producer who is accused of murdering his wife while on vacation last year is going to stand trial in mexico. his name is bruce beresford-redman. he's not appealing a federal judge's ruling that would extradite him back to cancun. however, he is maintaining that he's innocent. his wife's body was found in a sewer at the resort there last april three days after she was reported missing. authorities in mexico say there is evidence that the couple fought over the man's alleged infidelity and there was scratches on his body and that he waited until the day after his wife reportedly went missing to tell authorities. >> he was looking for her. he would come back to check on the children. he did that numerous times. he is a good man. he's never been in trouble with the law. he's not a violent person. and despite difficulties in the marriage, everyone has difficulties, usually there's still a great deal of love.

perry's killer was after his $300 coat he received as a gift from a friend on christmas eve. prince george's county police say shots rang out just after 11:00 a.m. at southview dve and southview court in oxon hill. relatives say perry was visiting his girlfriend and children in the area. relatives tell me the victim had walked to a nearby convenience store and was returning to the apartment with those items when he was gunned down. >> he had just told his daughter i'm going to the store. i be right back. he loved his daughter. the littlest one. he kissed her. went to the store and never made it back. >> reporter: relatives say perry was on the phone with his brother in south carolina when it happened. he heard a commotion, the phone dropped and the line went dead. >> it could happen to anybody. they are going to keep on doing it. >> reporter: this isn't the first time perry has been the victim of a violent crime. in march he was stabbed in the thigh at the gallery place metro

in d.c. the attackers were after his cell phone. police are trying to track down witnesses and surveillance video from the area. >> we're hoping somebody in the area may have saw something being on christmas day, everybody up and about. maybe something saw something has some information that can provide us with a tip. >> family and friends will hold a vigil at the crime scene at 7:00 tonight. a memorial fund is set up through the bank of america to cover funeral expenses. folks in white oak, maryland, woke up to the sound of gun shots this morning at about 6:30 at the intersection of stewart and april lanes. a man was murdered. montgomery county police still searching for the suspect and have not released a motive. the man accused of killing two people and kidnapping a toddler in richmond or christmas eve was let out of jail the day before those murders. 27-year-old jammal clemmons was arraigned today in a court in

richmond accused of shooting a 60 year old and a 56 year old. clemmons then stole an suv that had a 2-year-old boy in the back. the boy was later found not injured. investigators believe the motive for the murders was robbery. thousands of credit card numbers were stolen from a security firm in texas on christmas. a group of hackers is claiming responsibility. they say it's only the beginning. we get more now on whether your personal information could be in jeopardy. >> reporter: it was a cyberattack with a message. a loose knit group of hackers called unanimous stealing up to 4,000 names, home addresses and credit card information from stratfor, a texas firm with big name clients like apple and u.s. military. >> hackers are in all of the information systems that exist today. >> reporter: andy purdy headed up the top security post. he says all companies need to understand they are not islands. everyone is at risk.

>> i think every major company in the country has been infiltrated by malicious actors. the question is whether or not they know it. companies have to recognize that this is going to happen sooner rather than later. >> reporter: the same goes for individuals. a quick survey of shoppers in this hardware store turned up identity theft victims. >> i was in north carolina and someone in new jersey spent $300. went back to the same store twice. >> reporter: others believe it's just a matter of time. >> think we're just lucky. >> always a fear that someone can hack into your files or computer and figure out your information. >> reporter: in the case of stratfor, the hack eer group was to prove a point. using credit cards to make donations to charities like the red cross. some of the victims caught the illegal charge and got it removed. experts say at the minimum, consumers need to track credit card bills and work with their financial institution. >> they need to work with the

welcome back to "news4 at 6:00." i'm storm 4 meteorologist chuck bell. an up and down kind of day. down for most of the day. a nice bright finish with a little bit of sunshine just before sunset right around 5:00 this afternoon. skies are going to try to clear late tonight but between now and clearing, there is still a few more chances for light rain across the area. here's the way it looks on storm 4 doppler. cloudy skies. 50 degrees in washington right now. a southwest wind still averaging 11 miles per hour. winds will pick up tomorrow. heavier rain we had earlier today is now forming up a tough line of showers and some embedded thunderstorms that goes from philadelphia all of the way down through dover down into parts of southern delaware and just about ready to move into salisbury, maryland. friends out at ocean city, that line of showers and storms is headed their way. it will be there in about the next 30 to 40 minutes.

closer to town, not much going on the immediate metropolitan washington area. sprinkles along interstate 66 toward the west of manassas east of marshall area. further down south and west, light rain coming into southern end of the shenandoah valley. a couple raindrops may live long enough to give us sprinkles between now and midnight but after that this big area of low pressure now centered over central pennsylvania, that's racing into new york and new england and it will take the rain out of here now and it will allow a big push of much colder air to ride a strong west to northwesterly wind in here for tomorrow so you need to be ready for a breezy to blustery day on your wednesday. current temperatures, 30s to the north and west. still near 60 in southern maryland out on the eastern shore. lows tonight generally holding in the 30s. highs tomorrow low to mid 40s. a decent amount of sunshine around town but it's going to be very windy. a west to northwest wind tomorrow 20 to 30 miles an hour sustained.

now clean up this blood. see the guy on the ground there wiping it up waiting for police and paramedics to come. that is your dumb criminal of the day. facebook is being credited with helping save the life of a woman in utah and her 17-month-old son. the woman posted a message on the social networking site that read "hello. is anybody out there? i'm having a serious problem. me and my son will be dead by morning. somebody saw the post and immediately tried to get information from other facebook friends on how to contact the woman. >> her posts were never jokes. i thought this is christmas. this has to be real. even if it's not, you got to followthrough on it. >> eventually a friend from south carolina posted the woman's address. when the cops arrived, they found her live-in boyfriend holding the woman and her son hostage. they locked him up on kidnapping

the 123rd tournament of roses parade takes place this monday in pasadena, california. today hundreds of volunteers helped put the finishing touches on the floats. artists are cutting, painting and gluing flowers on the displays. when the parade started in 1927, it was broadcast on the radio. for the past 85 years, nbc has

aired the event. you can watch 11:00 on monday morning. for one northern virginia family, this year's parade is special. they will be on one of those floats dedicated to the relatives they lost who later donated their organs to others could live. derrick ward reports. >> reporter: a gentle bend in the washington and old dominion trail is a sign in the turning point of this family. paul was biking this trail when he crashed. three days later he died. since the loss, paul's wife and his daughter have come to find some solis knowing that he died knowing what he loved. he rode 2,000 miles a year. >> biking was one of his favorite activities. the trail was his favorite biking spot. >> reporter: and there would be something else to help remember paul. a red heart above his driver's license says it all. paul was an organ donor. >> that choice that we made by

checking that box over 25 years ago really became an important decision. >> reporter: paul's liver, kidneys and heart valves went to recipients who needed them to live. skin and bone were also donated. >> it was really important to him because he wanted to help people with parts he couldn't use anymore at that point. live on in someone else. >> reporter: nationwide the 100th million donor was just registered. >> 18 people die every day because there aren't enough organs to go around. >> reporter: next month paul's wife and daughter will ride a float by donate life america in the tournament of roses parade in pasadena. the 2012 float has a special theme. >> one more day. it basically celebrates the fact that donor family members allow transplant recipients to have one more day with their family members and their loved ones and go back to work and go back to

their community. >> reporter: they will be among donor families across the country. >> they actually allowed us to finish it. they left the eyebrows undone so me and mom got to glue the eyebrows on. >> there are still other remembrances as well. a shelter on the trail in paul's honor and paul's ride for life scheduled for april with money raised going toward organ donation efforts. they would have loved more time with paul but his memory goes on through his life passion, cycling, and through the gift of life he gave of himself and the bend in the trail is not such a sad place anymore. >> i like to come out here and just sit sometimes and soak up the serenity of it. >> reporter: derrick ward, news4. >> donate life america has been sponsoring floats in the parade since 2004. coming up at 11:00, breaking political news regarding the primary ballot in virginia. now there's a lawsuit filed to
