west virginia. that is a cold front. that will bring through another shift for us. this will be a shift in the wind. the winds will be gusty. i'll talk about the winds and a pattern shift that everybody has been talking about coming up. >> thanks, doug. the video is pretty clear. take a look. burglars caught in the act here. these are not your normal smash and grab crooks. police say this is a burglary ring that takes its time. jackie bensen live with the story. >> reporter: the police department doesn't have a crime lab or other fancy stuff. what they do have officers, officers who realize the evidence value of a brazen burglary caught on camera. >> this is what it looks like when your home is violated by a burglar. the homeownerer says he had one thought when he saw the results of the security system installed after a previous break in.

>> got them. this is why i paid for this thing. i know that if they get away with it one time chances are they'll be back. >> the images show the burglar casing the house the morning of november 18th. he tried to pry open a door with a screwdriver. he picked up a propane tank and through it in a small bathroom window. within minutes he and two cohorts are inside. what is unusual is how long they stayed in the house. >> most burglaries taken ten to 15 minutes. the ironic thing about this one is it took hours. >> reporter: the burglars are seen caray valuables. at a nearby gas station they tried to use a solon credit card. and look at the man and woman on

the left of the screen. detective jones says they a laptop computer taken during the burglar. the police want to question the two, the woman and the man who is not known. the homeowner says that it it is ununpleasant experience. >> they stole things and ransacked things. it was really bad. >> that homeowner is a hero to his neighbors. the burglaries could be connected to up to six other home break ins. >> thank you. there is a syringe ill tonight in maryland for the father who was killed on christmas day. family, friends and concerned neighbors got together on southview court, that's the spot where quintin perry jr. was murdered. he left his children to make a quick run to his store when he was schott. relatives think he was killed for the coat he was wearing.

>> it is inconceivable that someone would be that ruthless and spiritually bankrupt to shoot to kill someone on christmas morning over their own jacket. >> a memorial fund has been set up through the bank of america to help that family with funeral expenses. it was emotional for the family of a fallen police officer. bain suffered a heart attack trying to help a man who jumped off the key bridge. funeral services will be held tomorrow in burke followed by a procession into d.c. past park police headquarters. he was with the force for 19 years and leaves behind a wife and a son. 100 sears and k-mart stores will be closing and their stock plummeted today. a lot of employees who work at the stores are upset wondering whether they will have a job. shomari stone is in landmark

mall in alexandria with more on this. >> reporter: jim, sears hasn't announced which stores will closed. but we talked to many employees and customers and they are disappointed. >> well we like sears. and we will miss sears if they close. >> reporter: kathy dawson and their family are sad. sears holdings corporation said it will close up to 120 sears and k-mart stores. >> we like the clothing selection, the size selections and our hometown sears, we would miss it very much. >> reporter: it's an ugly sign of the tough economic times. holiday sales slumped. the company ceo says that gimp our performance and difficult economic environment we intend to implement a series of actions to reduce expenses. despite half a million dollars of lay away angel purchases k-mart reported a 5% drop in

electronic, apparel and lay away purchases this quarter. the employees say the news comes at bad time. many tell me they are concerned about losing their jobs. one employee says -- >> i have been here for 12 years and it's just bad all the way around. >> reporter: now sears holding corporation shares fell 27% today. that is the biggest decline in eight years. i'm shomari stone. back to you. >> thanks. an artificial christmas tree blamed for a house fire in fairfax county. this house is uninhabitable now. an electrical man function in the lights sparked the fire. in frederick county, maryland they are trying to figure out who is to blame for two suspicious fires that woke up neighbors last night.

both happened in urbanna a few blocks from each other. in each case heavy flames destroyed detached garages. one man noticed his house was on fire when he was on his way home. >> i'm on the phone with my mom get out of the house the garage is on fire. right when i'm telling her about the other. >> the house phones wouldn't work and there is no service on the cell phones. the fire is coming fast to the house. >> when the fire investigators searched for clouds they found other vandalism. nobody was injured in the fires but the damage is estimated at about $130,000. we know embers left in a mud room started that christmas morning fire that killed five people in connecticut. an elderly couple and three granddaughters died in the fire. investigators say the girls panicked and ran back up stairs. the firefighters found the

grandfather and one of the girls dead near an open third floor window. he obviously found one of the young children. because he guided her to the window that he went through. when he stepped through that window his life ended. >> the house was under renovation and investigators say no one should have been living inside. some patients were shocked to hear about the indictment of the president of a pain management clinic in virginia. he's been accused of selling a lot of painkillers without a medical license. his name is paul baccone. under his direction 800,000 oxycontin pills were prescribed in one year. 12,000 to a single customer. and he kept selling the drugs even after he heard about numerous overdoses. still no sign of a blind man

who has been missing now. he was last seen getting on a train at union station. his name is mitchell smith. he was visiting family in d.c. earlier this month. he hasn't been seen since getting on an amtrak train to dirming ham, alabama 11 days ago. he is 33 years old and got off in charlotte. somehow he ended up on a train to newark, new jersey. police are checking to see if he paid for that ticket to newark. rick perry filed a lawsuit against virginia in a last-ditch effort to get on the primary blot. he is challenging requirements for candidates to get on the ballot. newt bring rich trying to get on the ballot. virginia is holding a primary or caucus on supertuesday march 6th. mitt romney with an

endorsement from the boston herald. the paper says that he is the only candidate with the, quote, integrity and intelligence to beat president obama. romney is now in a dead heat with ron paul and newt gingrich among iowa republicans. the attack ads are picking up. though sometimes the negative can backfire with voters. >> it doesn't always benefit the person doing the spending. one of the things we have seen is that if one candidate attacks another it might benefit a third person because the voters don't like the negative ads. >> republican candidates have spent $10 million on ads in iowa this month alone. earlier this month the last combat troops pulled out of iraq but is it unlikely they will see a ticker tape parade as did service members in the past. officials in d.c. and new york say they would like to stage a

big celebration. but officials in the pentagon say they have not been asked to plan one. some critics argue with tens of thousands still fighting a deadly battle in afghanistan, a victory parade would send the wrong message. a northern virginia woman and her daughter will ride on a float in the tournament of roses parade in honor of organ donors. five years ago paul died after crashing his bike on the wnod trail. his organs went to help others in need. becoming an organ donor was a decision he put a lot of thought into. >> it was important to him. he wanted to help people with parts he couldn't use any more at that point and live on in someone else. >> the family will ride on the donate life float which celebrates family members of loves ones who donate organs. this year's theme is one more day. you can see the parade live monday morning on news4.

cam out of michigan with a guy on a wild ride in are stolen cop car. ryan cunningham swiped that car on friday and led them on a one-hour chase through three counties there. you can see the suspect weaving through traffic before crashing into another car. incredibly no one was hurt here. cunningham faces several charges for running from police, possessing illegal guns and running a meth lab. in hendersonville, north carolina a guy thought it would a good idea to stick up a store. not a good idea at all. normally the worker there is armed. on that night he wasn't. so he decided he didn't need no sink thing gun. reached for the drawer to get cash or whatever and then knocked the dude cold flat on the floor. and then dragged the guy over, called the cops, you know what he made him do then?

check this out, he made the guy get up and wipe the blood up off the floor that he bled when the dude hit him. the cops arrested the dude. he won't doing that in that store any more. five single mothers are among a group of people ready to turn themselves in for stealing toys for christmas. video from a toys-r-us store in hawaii shows six people taking off with toys. a lawyer turned over the gift wrapped toys to police today. they planned to give the gifts to their children for christmas but had second thoughts at the last minute. each could serve up to five years in prison. getting that crystal ball ready for the big night coming up in times square. that ball weighs in at 12,000 pounds and covered with 3,000 waterford crystal triangles.

alexandria. what a beautiful sunset. that was to the right of the picture to. the left of the picture look at that double rainbow. you see that right there. the first and the second rainbow in here. this was actually one of the widest rainbows i have seen in quite some time. it was a spectacular view earlier today. going to the airport. for record today, high temperature 55 degrees. it did get warm after a chilly start to the day. 39 with rain early today going up to 55. .61 inches of rain at the airport. 19 days at or above 50. december has been incredibly warm but it won't be that warm as we make our way to 2012. 43 is the current temperature. winds out of the west, northwest at 6 miles per hour. will the be a factor tomorrow. 43 degrees in martins burg, 39 in lees burg and 46 in la plata.

temperatures are on the mild side. gaithersburg reporting fog. dulles was at a quarter mile earlier. just a couple of showers across the area. that's all we are going to see the rest of the night. the rain has moved out of the picture. we are seeing clearing skies in here. this is another cold front bringing snows back to west virginia. the mountains of west virginia need the snow. they love this. there is the cold front bringing chilly air tomorrow. tomorrow is windy and chilly with winds gusting 35 to 40 miles per hour. thursday just cool. the winds begin to subside. just a cool day. tomorrow morning starting off cool. breezy with a chilly start. wind chills in the 20s for most of us as we wake up tomorrow morning. staying in the 30s all day. high temperature 42 to 46 degrees. will the be windy at times.

>> it's the first time since the '80s. take it back. since 1993. it's been a long time. 1993 is a long time ago. there wasn't a red skin to be found in the pro bowl tonight. a couple of former skins. an cray carter is a starter and so is carlos rogers. he couldn't catch a cold with the skins but he signed with san francisco and now tied for second in the nfl with six interceptions. it was another snub for london fletcher who leads the nfl in tackles. he found the twitter route. he said i don't know if i should be upset or laugh. obviously it doesn't matter what you do on the field. he wasn't voted in for the 14th straight year. he has been there as an alternate twice but never been voted in. ryan terrain just hoping to get picked up again.

he was released by the redskins after being ineffective the majority of the season. he had one really excellent game against the rams early in the season and then he went into the witness protection program and became expendable when evan royster was more than capable as a backup. capitals back to work against the rangers tomorrow night a bounce back game for the guys who cannot string together two good games in a row. mike green practiced fully for the first time since november 11th. he has been battling a groin injury most of the season. it was a welcome sight to see him on the ice today. there is no timetable for his return but this appears to be a step in the right direction. green believes the injury is something he will have to deal with his entire career. i cannot wait to get back throughout and skate with the guys and it's been tough

watching hockey and not being a part of it and i think i'm going to have to be cognizant of this throughout the rest of my career, probably. it's something you got take care of. in hockey it's a common thing and it's just maintenance right now and making sure i'm on of the of my stuff and getting better. i don't think i'll be 100% for a long time. a huge game in college basketball georgetown visiting louisville tomorrow. they are fourth in the country and undefeated. the terps hosting albany. it's virginia taking on maryland eastern shore. the cavaliers looking to win nine straight for the first anytime a decade. the cavs up 7-0. evans causes a turnover and races up court and gives it to mike scott. second half cavs up 13.
