. good morning. welcome to "news4 midday" i am pat lawson. right now, a northern virginia college campus is swarming with police, fire and other personnel. the teams are searching for an armed suspect. it all sounds terrifying, but it's only a drill. the purpose of the drill at northern virginia community college is to better prepare emergency teams. news4's melissa malay is there with the story.

>> they call it an active shooter drill to prepare responders if there was a gunman on campus. groups start at gathering 10:00 this morning, the event doesn't kick off until 1:00. >> our radios, channels, they have just been changed and updated and all of the dispatch equipment and communications has been changed. >> reporter: events like this one seem extra important following the shooting at the venlg tech, and the incident on the woodbridge campus back in 2009, a student brought a gun to class and fired at his teacher who luckily was not hurt. >> we have shootings all across the country, and not just schools, because schools are really important to us, and it's

right in our backyard, and we have nova -- >> they were scheduled during a winter break. it includes the fairfax county police and school police, and virginia police. there's a large group of volunteers participating as role players. >> what you will see is rescuing of injured folks, and going to a evacuation point. you will see that care being rendered by the fairfax county fire and rescue. >> reporter: though they have had similar drills in the past, this has been months in the making and the largest ever held here at the campus here. we have breaking news at this hour in manassas. a bad accident at exit 47. the accident took place around 9:45 this morning on the westbound side. we're told there are serious

injuries, and possibly life-threatening injuries. a bad accident on i-66. and here, again, is the scene on 66 at this hour. we will continue to follow this story and bring you updates as we get them. right now, friends and family of a u.s. police officer are saying their final good-byes. sergeant michael baim tried to help a man that either jumped or fell off the bridge. his service will be followed by a procession to washington and then back to virginia where he will be laid to rest. there will be rolling traffic delays starting in about half an hour along 395, memorial bridge and the gw parkway. the delays are expected to last about 90 minutes. traffic is moving once again on the clara barton parkway

after a serious accident this morning. this is the scene at macarthur boulevard. the police officers that investigated the crash told us a single car was driving and the driver lost control and the car flipped over. one person was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. hi, veronica. >> hey, pat. what a chilly day it has been so far, right? you probably came in, and i know you don't like to be cold. we have a stiff wind blowing out of the northwest. that wind has been cranking up today. and we have been in and out with a few clouds, and right now sitting on top of us, a few clouds just moved in. it's partly sunny outside currently. and these were sitting around, 20 miles per hour earlier today,

and now winds are gusting as high as 36 in d.c. we have a 33-mile-per-hour gusts, and winchester could get wind gusts as high as 40 miles per hour. again, a mixture of clouds and sunshine. i don't think we will see the mercury rise much higher. it did go up to 50 degrees for a high temperature today. the other stories, what is moving in will be later on, and that's cold air. the storm in north virginia, that's gone. we will see the mercury drop from 50 down into the 20s. we will have details on what looks like sustained cold air for next week. >> thanks, veronica. montgomery county police are asking for your help this morning to find a missing gaitersburg teenager. she was last seen monday at her home.

she is known to hangout at lake foreest mall and if you have information call montgomery county police. a disturbing trend at our nation's military academies, a department of defense says sexual assaults are on the rise. there were 65 reports of sexual assaults involving cadets and midshipmen. last year there were 41. the naval academy saw the report of assaults double from 42 while the air force reports the numbers increased from 20 to 33. the military academy reported the same number in both years. the pentagon says it cannot conclusively identify the reason for those increases. the president of a chantilly pain management clinic is maintaining his innocence after being indicted on fraud charges.

he is accused of selling large amounts of pain killers without a license. the indictment alleges under his direction, more than 800,000 oxycotton pills were prescribed in one year, including more than 1,200 to a single customer. his lawyer says, quote, our laura certificates his innocence in this case and is looking forward to his day in court. u.s. park police say they have taken down a second structure put up by occupy d.c. protesters. earlier this month police arrested 31 protesters that refused to dismantle an unfinished wood structure they put up in the park. the police discovered the latest structure around 11:15 tonight, and nobody claimed responsibility so police tore it down. no arrests were made.

meantime, occupy d.c. is planning to launch a pop-up art gallery on friday. protesters are on their way to attend occupy congress protest. the protest is coinciding with the 2012 legislative session. right now hundreds of mothers around the country are taking part at a nurse-in at target stores. the demonstration stems from a situation last month in a target. a woman was breastfeeding her child in a remote area of the store when somebody asked her to move to a fitting room. the nurse-in has attracted some 4,000 members on its facebook page. the people have spoken. coming up on "news4 midday," the most admired men and women of 2011. the countdown to iowa, how

we're continuing to follow breaking news in manassas this morning. chopper 4 is over the scene of a bad accident on i-66. these are pictures from chopper 4. it's the scene at exhibit 47, which is sutly road.

this happened around 9:45 on the westbound side of 66. we're told there are possibly life-threatening injuries in this accident. again, this is i-66 at sutly road in manassas. and fewer than 6.5 million nonimmigrant visas were issued last year, compared to 7.6 million issued in 2001. the u.s. travel association claims stricter travel requirements implemented in the wake of the september 11th attacks are costing american businesses $859 billion in untaxed revenue. the national security remains a big concern. it's the end of an era for u.s. savings bonds. beginning january 1st, you will no longer be able to buy savings

bonds at financial institutions. series ee and i electronic savings bonds will remain available to buy on treasurydirect.gov. now a republican candidate is suing. he wants to get his name on the ballot. he failed to get the 10,000 signatures required. perry's spokesperson told reporters that citizens should be able to vote for anyone of the candidates. meanwhile, all of the candidates are focusing on iowa, with the caucus less than a week away now. and brian moore tells us each candidate is taking his or her own path to try and win the

vote. >> reporter: with six days to go before the iowa caucuses, the presidential campaign is getting personal. mitt romney mocked newt gingrich. >> it was more like lucille ball at the chocolate factory. you have to get it organized. >> our campaign will stay positive. >> reporter: and his supporters have launched some withering attacks on romney, asking whether a moderate can be trusted and a new text message campaign where they were calling romney's once pro-choice views. rick perry portraying the other candidates as washington insiders is campaigning with the ultimate outsider, controversial sheriff, joe arpaio. >> and then michele bachmann is desperately trying to get momentum back, knowing that even with less than a week left, a lot can happen. ron paul is still leading the

pack in iowa, but in new hampshire, it's mitt romney running strong with just 13 days to go before the first in the nation primary. brian moore, nbc news, washington. on the other side, president obama is quietly but studly building momentum. he has an approval rating with 45% saying they disapprove of the job performance. it's the first time since july that his approval rating was higher than his disapproval rating. that could have something to do with the recent battle over the tax break extension, where the president came out with a win over house republicans. a new gallop poll ranks the most admired men and women in the country. president obama won the most admired man, and george bush came in second, and hillary

clinton tops the list as the most admired woman for a record 16th time. and she was followed by oprah winfrey, michelle obama, and sarah palin, and condoleezza rice. >> we often consider politicians -- some of them to be the butt of jokes, but one center is dishing out laughs of his own. a specter told the crowd he has been in comedy now for 30 years, taking shots at chris christie, and presidential hopeful, newt gingrich. how did he do? well the philadelphia enquirer says the crowd roared with approval. we assume he was pretty good. >> what makes him so funny, you are taking him seriously, and you are listening, and it was like that was a joke, and that

was funny. well, our weather makes us smile -- not laugh but smile today. >> yeah, we will, we have sunshine back. a lot of folks, though, getting from point a to point b a little faster, and it depends on which way the wind is blowing. hopefully that wind is helping you, and a lot of folks to chill because of the wind. and as we take a look at where we have been so far, we want to look back at all the days we have had in the 50s and 60s and in the 30s, and of course we have not had any day of winter this day so far in the 30s. we have had seven days in the 60s, as far as the 50s go, we have had 12 of those, but, again, last year, by this time, we had 15 days -- 15 afternoons with highs in the 20s and 30s. so if you like the cold air, i can tell you it's coming. wait until you see our seven-day forecast. 48 degrees, your current temperature. the wind at 15 miles per hour. again, a dry wind in the wake of

yesterday's weather system. it did bring quite a bit of rain to some sports, especially south of us. 37 degrees in hagerstown. so a big range through the area right now. as far as later today, we're going to get up to around 50, 50 degrees, and plus just down to the south, we will have to deal with this, and that's the wind that will be blowing through here all day long. up to 33 in hagerstown, and 32-mile-per-hour gusts currently in leesburg. we may have minor problems around the area today with winds gusting up to 40. cloud cover, we have been in and out of it. as far as today, a mixture of clouds and sunshine, but ample sunshine, so that's why it looks pretty. we don't have the gray day with the wind and with the chill. for us today, though, again, chilly conditions, and later tonight we will clear out a bit and then clouds will build back

again. weak systems coming through mainly to the north of us, and for tomorrow we will have a partly sunny day, and then for friday, look at that, slightly stronger weather system dropping in from areas north that will be producing snow just off the lakes. for us right now, it's cloud cover for friday, and a chance for a few showers early saturday morning. so for this afternoon, we're chilly and windy, and gusts at 40 miles per hour. temperatures going up to 50 degrees, and 45 just north of us. and then the evening, oh, the evening hours, the winds will start to settle. coat weather indeed all through the day, 36 to 32 degrees. look at the four-day forecast, pat. we will see temperatures rise a bit by the end of the week with a high of 55 degrees, so a couple of days here coming up where we will be partly sunny, and saturday right now, some showers that i think will be mainly in the early morning hours and your high for saturday, new year's eve, is 53, and then a few clouds left around by the stroke of

midnight. i do think it's going to be dry. for sunday, 54 degrees for a high temperature. and take a look at monday and tuesday, because we're going to -- we're riding this roller coaster up and down and up and down and nothing that has been terribly low in the temperature department. that will all change early mid-part of next week. high temperatures on tuesday, 37 degrees, and from everything that i have seen, it looks like this will be lasting a couple days, so our longest stretch of cold coming up next week. i will talk more about that, the pattern change, in a little bit. >> hello 2012. >> right. >> thanks veronica. traffic around rfk stadium will be heavy as the fourth annual military bowl game kicks off, and the match-up pits the air force falcons against the toledo rockets. the game is set to kickoff at 4:30. still plenty of good tickets available. it's the fifth straight bowl

going to get some day. >> reporter: there was one gift from ben his family did not find until the next day. a youtube video ben posted one week before he died without saying a word, he described to the world how he cheated death three times, at the age of 4 after a seizure, he saw a bright light above him, and ben also shared an interesting vision he had when paramedics were reviving him at school earlier this month, standing in a white room with his favorite suit, and he was smiling and he said he wished he never woke up. he ended with this. >> i just think ben opened the door for a lot of people to think about something that maybe they never thought about before, and that to me is a wonderful

we begin this half hour with an update on our breaking news. we're following it from manassas, and we're told an 89-year-old woman died after an accident on i-66. she tried to make a u-turn in the median when she was hit by an suv. the accident happened around 945 this morning near sutly road. the driver of the suv that hit her suffered minor injuries. also right now, on news4 midday, virginia state police and fairfax county police and other law enforcement agencies are staging a shooting on the campus of northern virginia community call ninge avondale. the drill is designed to help police coordinate with different groups in case of an actual attack and it will include a large group of volunteers taking part in this drill.

montgomery county police are asking for your help today as they try to help a missing gaitersburg teen. the 15-year-old was last seen monday at her home. she's described as hispanic, and 5'1", and weighs about 130 pounds. and then a funeral just wrapping up for a fallen u.s. police park agency. he died while trying to save a man who had jumped or had fallen from key bridge two weeks ago. here are the live pictures from the church. rolling traffic delays for the procession will start at any moment. the procession will head towards i-395, and proceed across the washington bridge parkway. the delays are expected to last 90 minutes.

and then a huge emotional display on the part of tens of thousands of north koreans who lined the snowy streets to watch the processional today. some are questioning how much of this was staged. >> reporter: under heavy snowfall, the funeral procession for the man the north korean's called their dear leader made its way. leading the way, his son and successor, kim jong-un. thousands lined the streets to pay their respect, and the sound of whaling clearly heard among the music. the only thing that kim jong-il

did was to starve 3 million people to death. this woman now works in seoul. at first i thought, wow, we could go home, says the radio station's founder. he escaped three years ago. but he says there's no hope of change, no hope because of this man, kim jong-un. not much is known about him or his ability to rule. but one thing is clear. he's inherited his father's dictatorship, says the radio station manager. >> the images of that funeral procession were only available directly from north korean state tv, so it has not been possible to verify how much of it has been staged, including the mourning. the taliban is claiming responsibility for a roadside bombing in eastern afghanistan that killed three nato troops. nato says the bombing happened

yesterday. the exact location and the natalie of the troops have not been released. the taliban said it was targeting the u.s. convoy. the latest incident says it brings the death toll in december to 23. a holy site in the middle east was the scene of a not so holy fight. police had to break up a brawl between rival groups of orthodox and armenian clerics. they were fighting inside the church of the nativity of bethlehem. police had to come in armed with batons and shields. it's not the first time rival clerics have fought over boundaries at that church. a rumor might have started a massive series of fights across

the mall of america. police had to break up ten fights because of a rumor that rappers lil wane and drake were here at the mall. the mall remained opened, but some stores did close temporarily immediately after that brawl. let's check on something a lot more peaceful, and that's our weather. warmer but windy today, veronica. >> yeah, a mixed bag. we have sunshine and clouds and probably more wind than most of us want to feel out there. we will see wind gusts up to 40 miles per hour. of course, you will feel that more when you are out in an open area. your high today, right around 50 degrees. probably low 50s in some of the neighborhoods down across southern maryland today. so coat required. this evening, 36 to 32. we are expecting to drop all the way down to the 20s by tomorrow

morning. can you see 5:00 a.m., 28 degrees for a temperature and 27 at 7:00 a.m. in fact, a lot of the neighborhoods up in the areas like loudoun county and faulkner county, they will start 24 to 25 degrees tomorrow morning. a look at your seven-day forecast here. 55 degrees on friday and 53 for saturday. we continue to ride the roller coaster. we took a dip and we will head back up by the end of the week. a few showers will be passing through early saturday morning, but for the big celebrations, you should get to the parties on a dry note for late sunday morning. and then there is the cold for tuesday. the high, just 37 degrees. and by everything that i have seen, and that's not a wet wednesday, but everything that i have seen it looks like cold is going to be sticking around for a while starting next tuesday, likely to be our longest cold

vaccinations as one way to stay healthy during the new year. children and families and loved ones have been together, and there are several vaccines that are very important for a family to know about in order to stay healthy for the new year. flu vaccinations, the cdc recommends a through vaccination for everybody six months of age and older. the flu has not hit hard yet, so it's good to prepare for that. the tetanus, and per tuesdayious evacuate 18, and that's also known as whooping cough. we want to encourage individuals and families to check with their health care provider to see if they want to get the booster.

>> you want to make sure the kids are vaccinated? >> yes. >> but what about the germs you pass whether or not -- you can't be vaccinated against, for example, colds? >> well, it's important to cover coughs and sneezes always using the elbow is the new way we try to encourage people to cover their coughs and sneezes, and hand washing frequently. it's important to watch and make sure the flu vaccine has been obtained this year and make sure adults and children get their vaccines. >> are people still coughing into their elbows? because during the swine flu outbreak, you know, there was a lot of talk about it and we mentioned a lot about it in the news, but i don't see as many people as i used to coughing into their elbows. >> watch the children. they are leading the way. they get that really well, and so they can tell sxus remind us to do that. >> in cold weather, are we more prone to get those kinds of germs or does cold kill germs? >> we're not prone because of

not a manipulative trick to keep them from taking anytime off from all. weddingwire.com is a wedding planning website. and then giving the economy a boost, but news of hundreds of job cuts could have the opposite affect on the economy. and we go to cnbc with jacky for the day's headlines. >> let's get you up-to-date on the markets right now. all lower right now. the dow down by 130, and the s&p 500 down by 15 at the moment. volumes are light and yesterday was one of the lightest days of the trading year. in other stories we're watching this morning, mall trade group says last-minute shoppers gave merchants a solid lift before the end of the sales. the sales are up 4.5% compared to a year ago.

the wizards have played only one game this season, and there's already trouble brewing. forward blach took to twitter to follow his season loss to new jersey. he tweeted, everybody needs to shut up. i did not call out my teammates or coach and said i had a bad game. the 25-year-old forward tweeted that after saying he was misused in monday night's game and right now the system he's in is not working. the wizard's coach said he talked to him about the comments, and says his comments are disappointing. and the news was a
