good afternoon, i'm pat lawson muse. i'm aaron gilchrist in for jim handly. we start with the wind, 30-mile-an-hour winds in some parts of the area. >> kim is in the storm center to tell us more about this. it's chilly. >> it is. coming off the heels of what was a lot of rain, now the next thing in line, the crazy, gusty winds. we don't have a wind advisory. the winds are strong, blowing around what may be old christmas trees you have put outside. we have wind gusts outside reagan national at 26 miles per hour. gusting to almost 36 miles per hour in hagerstown and annapolis. 24 in camp springs. now, the temperatures this afternoon have been pretty good. we are at 43 right now and 44 at la playda. look what happens when i factor

in the wind with the temperatures. 24 in hagerstown. the 40s go away and feel like 35 degrees. the windchill a big factor. we don't have to worry about snow. we are going to stay dry. we deal with the windy weather through 9:00. temperatures easing back from 37 down to 36 by 11:00. chilly overnight. the bright, silver lining is we will not have the gusty winds tomorrow. we are going to go from highs in the 50s to windchills down into the teens by next week. we'll straighten that out in a bit. >> thanks, kim. campaign surge is under way in iowa. >> republicans are ramping up the rhetoric trying to woo undecided voters there. jenelle is live with more on the last minute push.

>> reporter: with six days left, republican candidates are using whenever they can to get votes. most of the contenders say they have a chance to win. iowa campaigning is now nonstop with candidates on bus tours across the state. the latest polls show ron paul and mitt romney leading the pack. it's still anybody's race. >> it's always difficult to tell just who is gaining momentum and who isn't. >> reporter: by a small margin, the leader is paul who launched a tv ad tough on his opponents. >> politicians who supported bailouts and flip-floppers can't clean up the mess. >> reporter: newt gingrich dismissed the ad and aired one of his own. he polls third in iowa, he remains optimistic. >> we are ahead of where i thought we would be in this state. i'm happy overall. >> reporter: paul and romney

focused on jobs and criticized obama. >> we have to ask someone who can post up against president obama on the economy, knows the economy and has credibility on the economy. i do. it's where i spent my life. >> we are the largest middle class ever and now it's shrinking. >> reporter: with six days until the caucuses, long shots like bachmann and santorum say the race is far from over. with paul in the lead, republicans are rushing to criticize him. pat? >> tell us, other than the economy, what are the other main issues the candidates are talking about? >> reporter: jobs top of mind for everyone. the candidates are hitting that topic hard. health care is another big issue. they are talking ability romney's plan and alternatives they see if they are elected. it's what we expect to see in new hampshire.

>> thanks jenelle. >> reporter: sure. ron paul gets first billing in virginia. they drew names today and paul's name was picked first to be on the ballot. romney is second. gingrich and perry did not get the 10,000 signatures they needed to be listed. the primary is closed. voters have to sign a pledge that says they will support the republican nominee come november. the first family is still on holiday in hawaii with a popular visit to a snorkling spot they like. they went to the island of owahu. they went to a marine sanction ware and aquarium. the vacation continues through new year's day. two f-16 fighter jets intercepted a small civilian plane today shortly after noon.

the f-16s were deployed after the small plane went out of radio contact. the pilot later established his radio communication and was allowed on his way. no one was hurt or detained. a private jet skidded off the runway in florida. the plane returned with unknown problems. the plane skidded into a fence. no injuries to the six people on board. scary moments for passengers in california after two tires blew during a take off there. they had to make an emergency landing. it was a southwest airlines plane headed to seattle. emergency crews doused the tires with water once it landed. the 737 shook really badly before it stopped on the runway. >> the front of the plane was going up. all of a sudden, boom, it started shaking bad. stopped right there on the

runway. >> when it was all said and done, nobody got hurt. friends and family of a police officer said their final good-bye's today. sergeant michael bane died in the line of duty two weeks ago trying to save a man who jumped of fell from key bridge. today, hundreds paid their respects as the 19 year veteran of the force was laid to rest. there was a huge procession before the funeral. he leaves behind a wife and son. chris gordon will have much more on this story tonight at 5:00 and 6:00. tens of thousands of north koreans line the streets to pay final respects to kim jong-il. the death of the communist leader was announced last week. as we report, there's much mystery about what kim jong-il

leaves behind. >> reporter: under heavy snowfall, the funeral procession for the man north koreans call their dear leader made its way. leading the way, his son and successor, kim jong un. thousands of men and women in military uniform or civilian clothing lined the streets to pay their last respects. the sound of their wailing clearly broadcast along with music. a stark contract to the mood among north koreans living south of the border. the only thing that kim jong-il did was starve 3 million people to death said this woman who fled eight years ago. she now lives in seoul running a broadcast running daily reports. at first i thought, wow, we can go home said the radio station's

founder. he escape d 11 years ago. but, he says, there's no hope of change. no hope because of this man, kim jong un. not much is known about him or his ability to rule. one thing is clear -- he's inherited his father's dictatorship said the radio station manager. >> reporter: it's worth reminding everyone the images of the funeral procession were only available direct from north korean state television. it's not possible to verify how much of it or if all of it was staged. back to you. in the middle east, police had to break up fighting over the boundaries of jurisdictions inside the church of the nativity. 100 priests in mosques beat each other with brooms. it's not the first time they

white, mild flesh that is rather firm. it's an excellent choice for most fish eaters. i'm going to start with the sea bass. sprinkle a little seasoning salt on there. dip it in olive oil. i'm going to place it on a hot broiler rack. now you probably don't have one of these at home, but you can use your outside grill, you can use your broiler under your oven. what we are going to cdo is coo each side two to two and a half minutes. if it needs more time, put it in the oven. fish, for the most part is better undercooked than overcooked.

we have a beautiful piece of chilean sea bass here. what we are going to do is plate it up, serve it with pineapple salsa. it's finely diced pineapple, tomato, red onion, jalapeno pepper. dice it up, allow it to sit for a few hours and meld the flavors. excellent topping for fish. a little bit of fresh lime goes outstanding with the sea bass. there we have it. grilled chilean sea bass with pineapple salsa and fresh lime. >> that looks delicious. it does look good. >> there are more good eats coming up on nbc washington nonstop. we have a recipe that might let you put the holiday leftovers to use. that's tonight on foodies at 9:00. how music can help you pick out which wine to serve with

we are talking windchills already. >> we are. >> i guess it's about time. >> it is. we had a crazy, freak snowstorm in october. we are going to talk about highs in the 50s. before that, we have to get through this windy evening we have. it's windy outside and going to stay windy for a couple hours. the good news, winds subside and by tomorrow morning we put them back in the box at five to ten miles an hour. not a lot of rain. it was deceiving. if you spent the day in the office and didn't have to walk in the wind, you thought it was a gorgeous day. wind gusts up to 30 miles an hour. we are at 43 degrees. the wind is holding steady at 17. it's not a gust. the humidity is 37%. all right, let's talk about

other winds and temperatures. we have lots of 40s on the map. some 30s north and west. right now, fredericksburg is coming in at 48 degrees. let's talk about the wind gusts, there they are. gusting to 26 inside the beltway and 23 in winchester. the windchill dropped significantly. it feels like the 20s. the 40s feel like 30s downtown. feels like 43 in fredericksburg. that's the game plan. bundle up. it's going to be a chilly one. actual lows dip to 31 inside the beltway with mid-20s and windchills into the lower 20s and upper teens north and west tonight. the the radar is quiet. we are catching a break from the rain. i suspect as we head through the rest of the week and weekend, things are going to stay dry around here. we have to talk about a warm up. it's hard to think when we see the lake-effect snow to the

north in pennsylvania. the weather pattern is dumping things up to the north. it becomes more southwesterly for the next few days. we are going to get a nice warm up here. the mild weather means 50s in time for your weekend plans. as we think about next week, that's where we are going to flip the weather switch back to winter and back down into the 30s for highs. let's put it in writing. clear. windy. 39 to 43 as you step out on town. a chilly start tomorrow morning. temperatures between 23 and 31. a windchill between 19 and 25. tomorrow afternoon, a nice day. it will be seasonable. around the middle 40s is where we are supposed to be. it's what we are forecasting. we'll take you up to 54. yep, you can belief that one on friday. saturday and sunday, we are going to continue with the 50s. i think there's a slight chance of an overnight shower on friday.

mouth, it didn't keep him from keeping the care keepers away from the mauoaueo mower. they call the animal a real fire cracker. >> he's a big guy, too. a black lab in north dakota is back home with its owner after getting stuck in an icy river. firefighters found jack howling and hanging on to the ice by his paws in a river near a golf course yesterday. he got loose from the owners yard after getting through an invisible electronic fence. when they pulled him out, he was cold, wet and shivering quite a bit. after getting a clean bill of health, he was reunited with his owner. >> he'll be afraid of the water bowl for awhile, probably. >> down boy. all right, still ahead, turns to winter

of his security system installed after a previous break in. >> got 'em. this is why i paid for this thing, because i know that if they get away with it one time, chances are they'll be back. >> reporter: the images show the burglar casing the house of route 202 the morning of november 18th. he tried to pry open a door with a screwdriver. finally, he picked up a propane tank and threw it into the bathroom window. within two minutes, they are inside. what's unusual is how long they stayed in the house. >> most burglaries take between 10 and 15 minutes. we are talking hours. >> reporter: they are later seen carrying away valuables. itis not the last time they are caught on camera. they tried to use a bank card stolen during the burglaries. they call this suspect bat man.
