at the height of rush hour. as you said, one person is dead. we have video of what it looks like from the ground and the air. this accident happened between a metro bus and a pick-up truck. my understanding is that traffic was moving at a fairly fast speed. it wasn't bumper-to-bumper or congested. people were at or above speed level. witnesses say they saw the pick-up truck cut off the metro bus. veteran news 4 photographer was down at the scene. he spoke to some people who were on board the bus. here is what they had to say about what happened. >> it just happened so quickly. the bus driver, said the car was cutting her off, next thing i know, he hit the tree. it was so fast. >> i was on the bus, reading a book. i heard the noise and the bus kind of went careening off the side of the road and hit the

tree. >> we have aapproximate natalie ten patients treated and transported to the hospital. at this time, the bus driver, it is a metro bus involved, we can confirm that, is being treated and transported to the hospital. >> reporter: the metro bus driver had to be taken to the hospital because of the buses impact with the tree. we understand she is conscious and alert and is going to be okay. we are told by metro, the person who died, we don't know whether it was a man or woman, the person who died was not on the metro bus. we have a metro bus, a pick-up truck, possibly a couple other vehicles involved, as many as ten people transported. a fatality on the scene. rockville pike is closed a few blocks north of cedar lane, closed southbound at cedar lane, northbound and southbound. traffic is a mess in this area as people leave bethesda naval

and get to the beltway. not only is it a mess, people are detouring back into the neighborhoods on old georgetown road. it's congested at this point. it is going to be a difficult rush hour for people trying to get home tonight. >> thank you. now to the race to the white house. republican presidential candidates visiting every corner of iowa trying to get voter support before the january 3 caucuses. jenelle joins us live with details on that. good evening. >> reporter: hi, with the iowa caucuses six days away, republican candidates are taking every chance they can to win votes. the race remains tight. most say they have a chance to win. iowa campaigning is now nonstop with candidates on bus tours across the state. the latest polls show ron paul and mitt romney leading the pack. it's still anybody's race. >> it's always difficult to tell just who is gaining momentum and

who isn't. >> reporter: by a small margin, the leader is paul who today launched a new tv ad tough on opponents. >> politicians who supported bail outs, serial hypocrites and flip-floppers can't clean up the mess. >> reporter: newt gingrich dismissed the ad. >> if you hear high unemployment is the normal, say baloney. he polls third in iowa and remains optimistic. >> we are ahead of where i thought we would be. i'm happy overall nationally. >> reporter: paul and romney focused on jobs and criticized obama. >> put someone against president obama who knows the economy, has credibility on the economy. i do. it's where i spent my life. >> the largest middle class ever, now it's shrinking. >> reporter: six more days until the caucuses, bachman and santorum say the race in iowa is far from over.

with paul in the lead, his opponents are rushing to criticize him and stop his growing support. aaron? >> thank you. >> reporter: sure. hundreds of people turned out today to remember a fallen u.s. park police officer. services were held in virginia for sergeants michael bane. the processional went into d.c. and past the headquarters. he suffered a heart attack trying to save a man who jumped off the key bridge. chris gordon is live with more on this. chris? >> reporter: good evening. he was a 19-year veteran of the force. his funeral program has his picture with a big smile on his face and i'm told that was typical of him. here at u.s. park police headquarters the entrance was draped in black and so was his police cruiser behind me. the flag flies at half staff. ♪ >> reporter: the fup ral was

held at nativity capital church in virginia. they called it a large family gathering that included the law enforcement family and his family. >> he was a family man. because of his love for his family, it spilled over to the love for his department. he was a commander or sergeant and that love of family spilled over into the men and women he commanded. >> reporter: u.s. park police officers were joined by virginia, maryland an d.c. law enforcement to pay final tribute to sergeant bane who died in the line of duty. he responded to the report of a man jumping off key bridge. he suffered a heart attack. the man he hoped to save was found dead. a family friend now sees police service differently. >> it's sad. i came away feeling like i don't appreciate these people enough. >> reporter: sergeant bane leaves his wife and 5-year-old

son christopher who is challenged with cerebral palsy. >> he would be always, just very positive about everything christopher could do and was going to do. he just, he was a great dad. >> reporter: a long procession of police left the church, driving more than 15 miles each way from burke, virginia into the district and back. traffic diverted along the route to let them pass, slowly as they made their way past the u.s. park police head quarters. he was an avid cyclist and instructed other officers in mountain biking. >> he said it's the best kept secret in law enforcement, riding a bike. he was wrong. he lied to me. working with mike was the best kept secret. >> reporter: his funeral program has a biography inside which concludes by saying those who

were fortunate enough to know him are left with his warmth, his self-lessness, dedication and gene winness. that's the latest. back to you. >> thanks, chris. a terrible accident on i-66 this morning in manassas. an 89-year-old tried to make a u-turn on the crossover in the median and was hit by a pick-up truck. two teenagers in the truck were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. police are not going to file any charges. friends and family are going to hold a vigil tonight in baltimore for a woman from north carolina who was murdered and whose body was found in our area. she was 16 years old. she disappeared one year ago today visiting her family in baltimore. workers found her body several months later.

they ruled her death a homicide but did not release a cause of death. investigators say they made progress in the case, but her killer is still on the loose. the man dubbed the serial butt slasher fled the country. he's wanted in a series of slashings involving young women in shopping malls. he returned to peru this month. he would distract the women, then slash them. he's suspected in nine attacks between january or rather february and july. the campus of a northern virginia community college today, authorities were preparing for the worst. they held an emergency simulation to demonstrate what it would be like if a gunman were on the campus. erika gonzalez has the report. >> reporter: shots have been fired. three gunmen on the loose at the

annandale campus. they set fire to a car in a garage and shot a police officer. police arrive within minutes. they draw their guns, storm the campus. it's too late. six students, an officer and a gunman are all dead before authorities can take control of the situation and arrest the other two shooters. this isn't real, though. it's all a drill. >> it's one thing to have a theory of how these things are going to take place. it's another thing to run through the events they are going to be faced with. >> reporter: drills like this are a state requirement. this is the largest nova has done with 90 student actors and 60 police officers from multiple agencies. commander joe hill with the fairfax county police department says police are working on finely tuning their response efforts in these emergency situations. >> one of the gaps we discovered is communications. how do we talk to george mason,

virginia state and the responding units. we covered that gan. we want to maybe sure it's still covered. >> reporter: the drill hits too close to home for nova. in 2009, this student opened fire on a math professor in a crowded classroom. the gun jammed and fortunately, no one was injured. evaluators are brought in to assess emergency responders and grade them on their performance so they are prepared for future events. >> we have six campuses. it's important we are all on the same page if there's a major catastrophe. >> reporter: the drill was done during winter break when fewer students were on campus. in annandale, erika gonzalez, news 4. now, we turn to the weather. it's one of those days you want

to keep small children in the house. chief meteorologist, doug kammerer in storm center 4. they blow away on days like this, doug. >> they do, they tend to blow away, aaron. that's exactly what happens. wind gusts 35 to 40 miles per hour this afternoon. it made a mild afternoon turn into a chilly afternoon with the wind that is were so strong. 39 degrees is the current temperature out there now. we are dealing with winds at 14 miles per hour. it puts the windchill around 31 degrees. a chilly night out there now. take a look at the temperatures around the region coming in around 6:11. 36 in leesburg and 36 in manassas. with temperatures this cool, it's going to be a cold night tonight. no rain to talk ability. no snow to talk about. that's probably the case the entire forecast, coming up. one thing we are going to see, the cold temperatures most of you wake up to temperatures in the upper 20s tomorrow morning. we talk more about that, plus the roller coaster in temperatures. we are going to go up and way

the streets of north korea covered in snow and tens of thousands of people covered the streets to pay their final respects to kim jong-il. his death was announced last week. his funeral held today. there are questions about the future course of the nation kim jong-il leaves behind. >> reporter: under heavy snowfall, the funeral procession for the man north koreans called

their dear leader made its way through the capital. leading the way, his son and successor, kim jong un. thousands of men and women in military uniform or civilian clothing lined the streets to pay their last respects. the sound of their wailing clearly broadcast along with music. a stark contrast to the mood among north koreans living south of the border. the only thing that kim jong-il did was starve 3 million people to death says this woman who fled north korea eight years ago. she works in seoul running an independe independe independent radio station. at first i thought, wow, we can go home. he escaped 11 years ago. he says there's no hope of change. no hope because of this man, kim

jong un. not much is known about him or his ability to rule. within one thing is clear, he's inherited his father's dictatorship says the radio station manager. it's worth reminding everyone the images of the funeral procession were only available from north korean state television. itis not possible to verify how much of it, maybe all of it was staged. back to you. >> analysts are looking at the video for clues. they noted that kim jong-il's other two sons were not spotted at that procession. a showdown at mcpherson square as park police tear down a second structure by occupy d.c. protesters. police arrested 31 people who refused to dismantle the structure.

a similar thing happened last night. they diskocovered the 12 x 12 structure. nobody claimed responsibility for it so it was torn down. protesters got a permit approved to extend their stay through the end of february. they plan to launch a pop-up art gallery friday. it comes as protesters head to the district to head to occupy congress january 17th. it will coincide with the start of the 2012 legislation. >> you may have received a parking ticket or two this year or more. if you did, you are not alone. according to the american automobile association, they wrote more than 1.6 million tickets in the last 14 months. that averages out to 5300 tickets a day. officials have issued 100,000 more tickets this year than last year. that means the district is on pace to get more than the $80

million they brought in in parking ticket revenue during the last fiscal year. >> that's tough stuff, i tell you. >> i'm helping out with the money there. >> aren't we all? >> doug? >> i have warm temperatures. i have cold temperatures. i do not have, however, any snow. >> good. >> everybody's been asking for snow. they wanted to see the first snow inside the district. we saw a trace officially at the airport two times. some of you have seen some snow. most of us haven't seen much at all. the pattern that will change is the temperature pattern. we have been very warm in december. i do not think january is going to start out that way. at least the first week. for the record today, we saw a high temperature that got up to the upper 40s across the area. we saw 49 degrees at the airport. 39 is the low temperature. that is actually the current temperature now. winds gusting to near 40 miles per hour across the area. a couple reports of trees down but the trees without leaves on

them, we did not see too many problems. 39 here. winds out of the west-northwest 13 miles per hour. dew point 15. a dry atmosphere. don't think we are going to see rain or snow anytime soon. 32 in winchester now. the river looking at a temperature of 40 degrees. here is the current wind gusting close to 30 miles per hour. the winds will subside over the next couple hours. we are dealing with windchill. current windchill in the district, 31. 26 in gaithersburg. 29 in manassas. hagerstown, 21 degrees for the windchill. it is a cold night. it's going to get colder. storm 4 doppler radar, all clear. we are not talking rain here. we are talking snow. to the north, this is lake-effect snow toward pennsylvania, parts of new york. one of the first lake-effect

events they have seen. i think the lake-effect snow machine might be turned on here over the next couple days. windy and chilly. it's what we saw with the strong winds. they will subside tomorrow. a mixture of sun and clouds tomorrow. it's going to stay cool, but a nice day with less wind on your thursday. friday, before another storm system makes its way to the area, nice and mild. friday is looking like a nice day. this storm will make sure it stays to the north. it leaves us dry, once again, a slight chance of a shower. that is about it. that storm system coming out of the north would usher in colder air. i don't think we are going to see colder air this weekend. i think we'll see a warm up. what about next week? we have been warm. the jet stream to the west pumping in the southwesterly flow. the coldest air of the season is poised to make its way into the area next week with a dip in the jet stream.

that will be almost off of next week. that dip may last for two weeks of january. january could start off on a cold note after the first of january. mostly clear, continued windy. the temperatures continue to go down. tomorrow morning, clear and a chilly start. windchill between 19 and 25 when you step out the door tomorrow morning. expect a cool start to your thursday. mostly sunny tomorrow afternoon. a nice afternoon. seasonable. 42 to 46 degrees. as we make our way to the next couple days, here you go. talk about the roller coaster. 54 on friday, 51 saturday. 56 on new year's day. that day is looking fantastic. then, the bottom drops out. the first days we have seen so far with temperatures in the 30s. a high tuesday of 35. 36 on wednesday. i'm looking at the numbers on tuesday. 35 is cold enough. i think we could see 20 to 30-mile-an-hour winds and that would put the windchills in the

annual defense reports annual assaults are on the rise. 65 reports of sexual assaults at the naval academy, military academy and air force academy. they saw the number of reported assaults double from 11 to 22 while the air force climbed from 20 to 33. p pentagon says it cannot identify the reason for the increases. there is good news tonight in the recovery of a young model from texas. she was taken to the hospital after a freak accident earlier this month. her name is lauren scruggs. she accidentally walked into an airplane's spinning propeller after a tour to view christmas lights in dallas. her injuries were so severe she lost her left hand and her left eye. last night, supporters held a fund-raiser for the 23-year-old woman. she's a model and fashion blogger. more than $10,000 was raised to

group of burglars linked to seven break ins. home surveillance video was taken. three suspects breaking into a house. police say one of the suspects used a propane tank to smash a bathroom window, then climbed inside. investigators say that they aren't your average crooks. the burglary ring takes its time spending hours inside the homes. in frederick county, maryland, four teens arrested for arson. they found marine flares purchased at a nearby walmart. they tracked down the kids by surveillance video. all the suspects confessed and admitted to setting another fire on a deck in the same neighborhood last week. mothers in the d.c. area are among thousands in the country

who took part in a nurse-in in all target stores. a mother says she was harassed by a couple employees for nursing her 5-month-old son in the store. she was covered up and in a secluded area. she complained to target's corporate office. this woman, at a target store in virginia wanted to show her support. >> it's a hard thing nursing a baby. it's difficult. we do it with friends who don't approve, with family members who don't understand. i don't want any special treatment, i just don't want them to look at me cross-eyed when i'm feeding my baby next to my sister using a bottle. >> they said the company strongly supports women who want to breast-feed and they have a policy of allowing mothers to nurse babies anywhere in the store. you might be enjoying this unseasonably warm weather.

a lot of businesses say it's hurting the bottom line. area ski resorts say conditions haven't been this bad in fife years. jane watrel has more from the ski resort in pennsylvania. >> reporter: for the sixth time this season, a sophisticated network of snow making equipment is fired up at liberty mountain, workers hoping this time the chilly temperatures will last. >> it's still december. we have a lot of season ahead of us. it's tough because everyone wants to get out. unfortunately, we are waiting like everyone else. >> reporter: normally the week between christmas and new years would mean wall-to-wall skiers. they have yet to open. reservations are being taken from hopeful skiers. without a base of at least eight inches of snow, managers say it's difficult to keep the slopes groomed. >> we are looking for that 32 degrees. sometimes you can squeak 33 degrees. 20 is optimal for us to get a

lot of snow down in a short amount of time. >> reporter: the entire mountain is computerized to monitor everything from the recycled water used to make snow to the fan that is blow out the white stuff. it's all for naught if temperatures remain above freezing. if there's comfort in the lack of snow, liberty mountain is not alone from new york to maine they are struggling with above average temperatures. >> friends in vermont have no snow. they are scraping by. we are all in the boat together. hopefully, we'll get open together. >> reporter: it takes the click of a mouse to get snow makers fired up. if all goes well, they will open this weekend. in carol valley, p.a., jane watrel, news 4. back in 2006, that ski resort was only open 78 days because of unseasonably mild temperatures. still to come, doug tells us

on as you step outside. 34 in leesburg. 41 in culpeper and charlottesville, 36 degrees. you'll need the coats overnight as we are predicting a very cold night. don't expect rain or snow. a very dry atmosphere. storm doppler radar is dry right now. you have to go way up to the north in central pennsylvania and new york where they are looking at lake-effect snow right now. that should be ending. it could be good lake-effect for that area. not for us. tomorrow morning temperatures on the chilly side. 31 in gaithersburg. 31 in fredericksburg. we'll be breezy. five to ten-mile-an-hour winds. windchills in the upper teens for everybody. tomorrow afternoon, the winds not a factor, five to ten miles per hour. temperatures in the 40s. 46 in washington, 44 in gaithersburg and leesburg. to the south, fredericksburg coming in at 49 degrees. not too bad for thursday. a much nicer friday and right
