the passengers knew something was wrong when that they saw a pickup truck speeding toward them. the crews are getting ready to tow that bus from the crash scene on rockville pike. jackie bensen is on the scene with more. >> reporter: it was sudden, it was catastrophic and shut down a major traffic artery during evening rush hour. these images show the force of the metro bous's impact with a tree. passengers on the bus watch helpliless as a pickup truck jumped the median and headed right at them. >> i was on the bus and i heard the noise and the bus went careening off the side of the road and hit the tree. >> next thing i know we hit the tree just like that. it was so fast. >> reporter: the collision left the bus driver trapped.

she was freed by firefighters using pry bars. she was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. the driver of the toyota tacoma pickup truck suffered fatal injuries. >> we have numerous injuries with respect to occupants of the numerous vehicles involved. >> reporter: although it is six lanes wide this section of rockville pike is residential. neighbors believe that increased traffic from the military base realignment has led to more accidents. >> asking for speed cameras and reduce and control the speed on this street. is it dangerous. >> reporter: the collision created a traffic nightmare as tens of thousands of motorists found themselves cut off from the beltway. the name of the pick uptruck driver has not been released. back to you. tonight family, friends and

police held a vigil in baltimore for a north carolina teenager whose murder remains unsolved. felicia barnes disappeared one year ago tonight. her body turned up in the susk hanna river. she is a homicide victim but they have not said how she died. >> it was 365 days ago that we were calling and cry enand couldn't understand where felicia was at. still don't know what happened but we are praying that we have faith and we have faith that justice will be served. >> investigators are making progress in finding felicia barnes's killer. six days before the iowa caucus and occupy protesters are focusing on the reason presidentialened kas. ten people were arrested outside mitt romney's headquarters in iowa today.

rescued katherine who was seven years old at the time. she wrote a book about her experience dreaming of a day she could thank a soldier who saved her and so many others. >> to shake the hand of a soldier who knew exactly what we went through and who saw the horror. >> reporter: she miraculously found a rescuer at the heritage haul nursing center in lees burg, virginia. katherine's husband is sick and salvatore is recovering from pneumonia in the same room. >> i told him you know i was in germany and a bit more. >> reporter: she found out he was one of the soldiers who rescued christians and jews at the camp. >> it was an honor to do it and a grateful for the people.

not close to the temperatures for later next week. the coldest air of the season is upon us. i think will the come just in time for 2012. we'll talk about it coming up. hundreds showed up to remember a u.s. park police officer who died in the line of duty. michael boehm suffered a heart attack this month trying to save a man who jumped from the key bridge. u.s. park police officers and law enforcement from d.c., maryland and virginia attended funeral services at the nativity catholic church in burke, virginia. boehm loved his family and his job. >> he was a family man. and because of his love for his family it spilled over to his love for his department. >> reporter: after the service, the proses went into the district. he is survived by a wife and five-year-old son. police in fairfax county

believe the serial butt slasher is in peru. he is 40 years old. they want him for slashing women at shopping malls in northern virginia. he is accused of attacking nine women since february. police believe he went to peru earlier this month. there have been no reports of slashings in that country. it is not clear how or whether the police will get him back to the u.s. we are getting our first look at a cuban prison tonight. alan gross who is in the middle of the picture is in good spirits and fine health according to these leaders who visited him on monday. he was jailed two years ago while working on a u.s. aid funded democracy building program. he said he was disappointed he wasn't freed during a rubien prisoner amnesty last week. a number of people killed and gunman on the loose was the

last week. parking tickets are a cash cow for the district. in 14 months the city issued 1.6 million parking tickets. that's an average of 5,000 tickets a day. the typical tickets range from 25 to 100 bucks. the ticket writers have issued 100,000 more tickets this year than last year and they are on pace to top last year erevenue of $80 million. for the second time in a few months one of the largest stores in chevy chase is shutting its doors. the pottery barn will close for good on january 16th. the store officials did not offer an explanation for the closing. board's another large store in that pavilion closed after that company liquidated its assets. pottery born will continue operating stores elsewhere.

police in texas have a video that shows a guy stealing a cash register from a restaurant last night. he kept it and kept running even after finding throughout was no cash inside. they are treating this crime as a theft and not a robbery. coming up a bar in georgetown will not be open on new year's eve. the warm winter is terrible for skiing near washington but there is hope. we'll tell you about something in new york called good rid answer day. a lot of women

new year's eve won't be the same in georgetown on saturday. a popular bar and nightclub, third edition is closing for five days after being caught serving alcohol to minors. it also faces a type. a message on their website who says they bought advanced tickets for the new year's eve party will be contacted shortly. mothers in the d.c. area protested after a mother in texas says she was treated rudely by employees at a target store for breast-feeding her son in one of the stores. a manager in virginia told us that the company has a policy of allowing moms to nurse babies anywhere they choose.

the warm weather is hurting the bottom line on businesses that rely on d.c. vacationers. normally there are wall to wall skiers in pennsylvania. the stretch of warm weather has kept the resort closed. >> i have friends in vermont who have no snow and resorts are barely scraping by. we are all affected and in the boat together. hopefully we will get open quickly together. >> this is the worst season in five years. in 2006 warm weather kept the resort closed for 22 days. the normal season is 100 days. so they are all waiting for the temperatures to drop and it's coming. >> they are making snow tonight and tomorrow morning and will the be too warm again. this is not a good weekend for skiing but i plan on taking my family next weekend if that tells you anything. we have cold air coming. it's going to come in a hurry.

out there in alexandria. this is king street. a beautiful shot all lit up tonight. a beautiful evening out there. if you like it cold current temperatures in the upper 20s to lower 30s in many locations. for the record today above average once again in this extremely warm december. the average high 44. we reached 49 degrees in the afternoon. we saw 30 to 40-mile-per-hour winds. that made it feel cooler. but not all that bad. the low today was 36 degrees. and that is the current temperature out there. 36 degrees with winds out of the northwest at 10 miles per hour. it won't take much of a wind to give us a wind chill tonight. 36 is the actual temperature. the wind chill is 28. it is feeling cooler with that wind. 28 in winchester. 33 in la plata. down to 27 in manassas. the warmer areas along the

chesapeake. 37 degrees in cambridge. in the metro area closer in. montgomery county around college park, 34 degrees. and dulles at the freezing mark. we have seen a few clouds moving in. but tomorrow morning mostly clear skies allowing the temperatures to go down. windy and chilly on wednesday. but above average. tomorrow i think around the average high temperature in the mid-40s. a mixture of clouds and sun tomorrow. will the be on the cool side. but without the wind it won't be as bad. then we will see a warm front move across the area on friday. that will allow for a beautiful day. right now calling for a fantastic friday as temperatures should be in the mid-50s in many locations. will the be nice and on the breezy side.

but that is not that bad at all. then a change. this weekend is looking warm too. this is the pattern all weekend long. the jet stream just off to the west keeping the chilly air bottled off. the warm air has been around the area. but by next week that pattern change finally moves in. a deep trough of low pressure moves in across the country. that will allow for bitterly cold air to move in. will the be the coldest air of the season and the first time the temperatures are in the 30s all day long. but it won't even feel like the 30s. mostly clear and chilly tomorrow. 19 to 25 degrees. that is with a 5 to 10-mile-per-hour wind. tomorrow a nice afternoon and seasonable. 42 to 46 degrees. winds out of the south at 10 to 15 miles per hour. that will warm things up for friday. back to 54 degrees. nice and mild there. 51 on new year's eve. new year's day.

we start off warm with a high near 56 but the bottom literally falls out. 41 on monday, 35 on tuesday and 36 on wednesday. and if it comes through the way i think it's going to come through i think we will see wind chills all day long on tuesday and wednesday into the upper teens to lower 20s all day long. we have not seen it so far this season. it is normal this time of year but i don't think our bodies are exactly ready for it. >> it was good while it lasted. >> get ready. we have sports coming up. did you see the hoyas tonight?
