we begin tonight with some breaking news. a police chase ended in a crash in the district after starting out in prince georges county. the crime scene is at east capital street and benning road southeast. shomari stone is there with the latest. >> reporter: we arrived on scene approximately three minutes ago. it is active out here. before i show you that video, let me move out the way so can you just see, my photographer can zoom in on this police cruiser here. you can see it has front edge damage. police say the suspect rammed

that police cruiser. if you move a little to the right for our viewers, can you see the suspect's car has damage on the driver's side of the car. let's roll some video to tell you guys what exactly happened. prince georges police say they were looking for an armed robbery suspect and chased him into the district at benning road and east capital street southeast. d.c. police and prince georges, police are on the scene. police say the suspect did not commit a robbery tonight but that he had a warrant out for his arrest for allegedly being a lookout in a recent 7-11 robbery. police say when they were chasing this suspect, he had three people in the car. now, he let two people out. police are searching for those two suspect, the third suspect hit the cruiser, took off running and police were able to

arrest him. i'm sure police will sit him down and ask him questions, for example, were you involved in the 7-11 robbery earlier in the week? do you know the two people who were in your car? you should know them, they took off running and you have heard from him? they're going to sit him down and try and figure out what exactly happened and if he does have involvement in the recent 7-11 robbery earlier this week. live with this developing story, i'm shomari stone. back to you. >> a couple dozen teen-agers showed up to say a premature good-bye to two young women killed in a horrible crash overnight. we've learned they were on their way home from a birthday party. jackie bensen joins us live with more on this story. >> reporter: the outpouring of love here tonight was touching. glowing candles illuminated the faces of the faces of those who

were as young and glowing as they were. >> she's still listening, even though she's not here. just say what you have to say. she's listening. >> 19-year-old tamara nicole johnson was a back seat passenger in the nissan that swerved off university boulevard easterly this morning and struck the brick wall of a home. johnson and the 22-year-old driver of the car, denise richards, were killed. >> we were very close friends but we fell off and i kind of feel bad because i never really said sorry before she left. >> reporter: the front seat passenger of silver spring was seriously injured and remains hospitalized. relatives say the two younger girls had been at a birthday party in silver spring and caught a ride home with richards. >> it was one of her friend's birthday party that they went to. >> and where was that? >> somewhere in silver spring. >> you don't know if this driver was drinking or not? >> no, i'm not sure. i don't know the driver pip o. y

i only know the other friend. >> reporter: the accident remains under investigation. back to you. >> jackie bensen, thank you. >> the driver of a metro bus involved in a crash remains hospitalized tonight. the driver of a pickup died in the crash. news 4 has learned he was delivering a pizza to the national institutes of health at the time. his pickup truck crossed the median and forced the bus to drive into a tree. investigators are still studying video from the bus reportedly showing that accident. >> a look at the weather now. a few of us saw a couple snow showers this afternoon. this video taken at montgomery village. out there right now it's getting chilly, quite chilly. >> big temperature changes ahead over the next couple of days. we're going to go up over the next few days and then i think down as we enter 2012. out there right now 34 in

gaitersberg, fairly mild here but cooler to the west, 32 in winchester. some more snow showers in through montgomery county and howard county making their way toward baltimore. we saw snow shower activity earlier in ulna and you may see a few more flakes coming down. that's about it for the snow. no snow in the forecast over the next couple days but trust me, winter is going to make its presence felt. >> people in northern virginia still shaken up tonight after they felt their houses shake this afternoon. the rumbling came from explosives training at the marine corps base in quantico. that training has been going on for a whole month but today was a little different. people heard a loud boom. for a lot of folks it brought back memories of that 5.8 magnitude earthquake that shook

the whole region four months ago. >> all of a sudden it was a huge like rumble. it was so loud and i just remember getting up off the couch. >> experts think the explosion was felt today because of the overcast conditions. the last earthquake recorded in virginia was very early on christmas eve. it was a 2.0 near mineral, virginia. >> a developing story now in the planned world trade center museum in new york city. tonight we're learning that work on the project has ground to a halt because of a funding dispute. the museum was set to open next year on september 11th. today mayor michael bloomberg says that will not happen. in recent months the foundation in charge of that project has been arguing with the port authority of new york and new jersey on who will pay for the project. the memorial portion of the project opened this past september and has already drawn a million visitors. >> only four days now until the iowa caucuses and the roller coaster ride continues. on the way up, some surprises. rick santorum, ron paul and the

candidate who practically wrote iowa off, mitt romney. >> reporter: suddenly the iowa front-runner, mitt romney, is storming the state. >> this is not an election just to change presidents, it's an election to save the soul of america. >> reporter: romney has changed his strategy. while michele bachmann rose and fell and then rick perry and then herman cain, romney mostly stayed away from iowa. his super pac hammering the latest front-runner. >> ever notice how some people make a lot of mistakes? >> it was probably a mistake. >> i made a mistake. >> reporter: newt gingrich has lost half his iowa support, looking ahead now to south carolina. >> it is a long way from here to picking a nominee. >> reporter: but romney is now claiming iowa is where the nominee ought to be picked. >> look at the candidate, decide who you like and decide who also could become president and could lead the country at a time of a

challenge. >> the next president of the united states -- >> reporter: many iowans are deciding that's ron paul. he's close to romney in some polls, ahead in one. rick santorum is surging among iowa's many social conservative, third in some polls. but romney can afford an iowa media blitz. winning this first in the nation republican contest is now plan a for mitt romney. from des moines, i'm steve handlesman, nbc news. >> congresswoman gabrielle giffords and other survivors of that deadly shooting in tucson, arizona will mark one year since that tragedy. they'll do that next month. several events will happen on january 8th. there lab communitywide ringing of the bells at 11 after 10 in the morning, the exact moment the shooting occurred. right now it is not clear which events giffords will attend or whether she'll speak. she is still recovering from the

shooting that left six other people dead. >> a monumental week for d.c. homicide detectives. investigators have made several arrest, seven actual lirks some date back several years. today an arrest was made for a double murder that happened three and a half years ago on k street in northwest. on tuesday a man was taken into custody for killing bill mitchell, jr. as he walked home from the shakespeare theater in the bloomingdale neighborhood back in january. >> this week's success was due to several factors, primarily due to a lot of hard work that has gone over the last year. some of the cases actually it was just a matter of timing because some of the people were in jail and we were able to get them this week to actually charge them because they were held on unrelated charges. >> the district expected to end the year with the lowest number of murders in nearly 50 years. mayor vincent gray and the police chief plan to talk about that tomorrow. >> the national park service extended a permit for campers in

freedom plaza until the end of february. occupy d.c. is in mcpherson square where a permit is not needed as long as the group is smaller than 500. d.c.'s police unit says every day crime has increased since occupiers arrived and their presence is putting a strain on police forces. >> d.c. will pay more than a million dollars in feeps as a result of a gun case decided in the supreme court. dick heller sued the city in 2003. he said the district's ban on handgun ownership was unconstitutional. in june of 2008 the supreme court greed graed. it ruled that the ban violated the second amendment. today a federal judge awarded heller's lawyers more than $1 million in fees and expenses. after that decision the district rewrote its gun law to allow ownership, but there are still very strict registration requirements. >> a lot of customers that use

verizon wireless are not happy tonight about a new policy that the company announced today. beginning on january 15th verizon is going to charge customers $2 a month to pay their bills online or over the phone. verizon claims it is simply passing on fees that credit card companies charge on each transaction. customers say it doesn't matter, the fee is not right. >> $2 is a lot when it sums up through the years. >> if there's extra money getting charged on your bill or whatever you're paying for, you're going to get people to get on your bad side. >> it feels like a penalty to me. >> it's very shocking. >> the fee will not apply to-to-anyone who uses verizon's auto bill paying system nor anyone who pays from online banking from their own personal checking account or will not apply to anyone who pays at a verizon auto store or anyone who decides to write a check and put it in the mail. zlt first list of sears and

kmart stores closing does not include any in the d.c. area. the closest is a grand central store in maryland. it announced it would be closing nearly 100 sears and kmart stores. >> a bull on his way to a meat processing plant in maryland decided he didn't want to go. so he got out and got away. it all unfolded in mt. airy. deputies saw the bull charge somebody and then ran wild toward a day care facility. at one point the bull rammed a deputy's cruiser. that's when the deputy shot him. then an animal control officer came up and put him down. >> want going to go without a fight, though. >> ahead tonight, divorce at 99 years old. what happened back in the 40s that has one man fuming.

>> a driver pulls into a rest stop and while inside a sinkhole swallows his car. >> 911, what is your imagine? >> local dispatching says there's nothing fine about some of the calls that take up their time. >>

a driver in florida pulled into the wrong rest stop today. a sinkhole opened up and swallowed his suv. that hole was about 30 feet

wide, 12 feet deep. the good news here, though, the driver was inside the rest stop when the suv got swallowed up. that rest stop between tampa and orlando is now closed. >> derek curtis sanders is a police officer out in denver, colorado. he was on duty a couple nights ago, out driving friend's car, got drunk, flew past a state trooper. cop clocked him at 140 miles an hour and did a breathalyzer test. guy was drunk as a skunk. he pleaded guilty to drunk driving. police fired him earlier this month but now sanders is appealing. he says the punishment is too harsh. >> several buses filled with teen-agers on their way home to nevada, cops stopped them, officers looked inside, found an awful lot of drug, marijuana, mushrooms, prescription pills. it was clear the kids were planning some sort of blowout on their trip. instead of charging them, the

police chief gave them a lecture about responsibility and safety and then he let them go. >> 911 operators can be the difference between life and death but in prince georges county, the 911 call center has been bogged down with a whole lot of nonemergency calls. [ laughter ] >> you want to call who? >> i want to call the water department. there's no water at this location. >> because of the calls like those, the call center now has a new nonemergency number with a light-up system to help direct calls faster. green means true emergency, yellow means trouble but not an emergency. county officials are hoping to adopt a three-digit number like 311 for nonemergency calls in the future. >> chilly out there dude. >> not too bad. average high temperature 45,

we're at 42 right now. it does feel a bit on the cool side. we did see snowflakes earlier this afternoon. a few more flying around the area right now. once again to the north and west of washington. up toward montgomery county and carol county. we hit a high today of only 44 degrees. low this morning of 31. but believe it or not, that is above average. today we'll once again go into the books above average. cold is low, though, in about two weeks, the average low temperature is 30 degrees. there we go as far as the above average goes. 42 degrees the current temperature with winds out of the south at 7 miles an hour. it'ses so southerly winds that will continue to warm us up. i think we're looking at a fantastic friday out there. 32 in winchester, 30 in culpepper, a little cool and 44 on the mild side along the chesapeake in annapolis and paw

tux et river. eastern forportions of howard county, just to the north of annapolis. watch out around the annapolis area. you may see a few flurries tonight but that's about it. the rest of the area is going to be completely dry. satellite and radar showing this little system that's moving on through the region. we'll see clearing skies tonight. a few cloud during the day tomorrow. we're starting off chilly tomorrow morning but then i think mild temperatures move in. we'll see a mixture of sun and clouds during the day tomorrow but high temperatures into the low to middle 50s ahead of our next front an boundary. that front will move through, slight chance of a shower late friday night into early saturday morning but clearing out nicely. i think we'll see sunshine during the day on saturday. saturday looks mild. any precipitation will be to the west of the allegheny front to west virginia. most of that will be in the form of rain. then we see the changes. it has been extremely warm

across the southeast and the coast with chilly air back to the west but that is going to change. cold air, the coldest air of the season moving in. tomorrow morning partly cloudy, chilly breeze, 28 to 35 in the city. tomorrow afternoon we're going to warm up nicely with temperatures into the 50s. becoming a little bit on the breezy side late but not bad at all out there and ringing in the new year looking very, very good. 39 degrees around midnight, partly cloudy but not too cold at all for those festivities for the new year on sunday. then i'm talking about the bottom falling out. yeah, 34 on tuesday, 36 on wednesday. >> all right. thank you. >> like january. >> still to come tonight, the couple that could become the oldest divorcees in history. >> if you are not a fan of robert griffin

at 5:00 you showed a january game that mattered. it's been a long time since we've seen a january game that matters. i'm talking about the 'skins. >> fourth season of last place in the division. since the last game doesn't really matter for the redskins, it seems like a preseason game, guys fighting for jobs and roster spots for next season, that includes the quarterback position is. there's been speculation john beck will get some run against the eagles.
