there are some changes moving through, especially into the northeast, up around the upper midwest, the northern plains, the snow that was in the northwest starts to spread into places like wyoming and we see a lot of wind whipping things around there in minneapolis on new year's eve. windy down into chicago, as well. most of the snow stays to the west of new york city. a few showers in the morning and we'll clear out. icy roads expected in new england. temperatures in the low 50s today here around the big apple, cooling off tonight into the 30s for the big ball drop. 42 degrees at minneapolis. you can see where the colder air is, the milder air to the south with the yellow and orange shaded areas. on new year's day, snow showers around the lakes. we'll see some good snow bands down wind of lake ontario and lake erie on sunday. but looking dry for much of the country. the mild air stays in place in orlando. still near 80 degrees, one of

the warmer decembers we've had, no doubt about that. monday, snow showers lingering here and adding up the snow in cleveland, pittsburgh. tuesday, this is when we quiet down. looking at the map, there's not going to be a lot happening. but that cold air across the east, and you're going to feel that shock to the system with overnight temperatures falling into the single digits. the start of 2012, not looking too bad across much of the country with the exception of that cold air wedged in here east of the mississippi and we'll feel it all the way down into the south, as well. tune in for "wake up with al" every weekday morning at 6:00 a.m. for your latest forecast on the weather channel. ♪

it fills up an arrangement, takes space and doesn't cost as much money as big flowers. every great party deserves a signature drink. i can't come here without bringing you a drink. >> you would never be invited back. >> you know the drill. >> this is a pear basil sipper. >> that is a darling glass. >> thank you. it has pear vodka, pear nectar and basil in there. is it good? >> it's refreshing. i never think of using basil in a drink, but that's good. >> everybody anticipates that midnight kiss, right? we've been eating and drinking and maybe our breath isn't so great. i fill little votive cups up with tic-tacs. to keep the buffet simple, i put out big chunks of chocolate with cheese knives. this is a wishing tree. i have some for you. you can write down your wishes for the new year and guests can

hang them on the tree. >> you didn't have to think at all, hoda. >> it's the same one every year. clean your purse. >> we only have a couple of minutes left for the rest. >> besides world peace, that's what i want. >> aimee to broadway, baby. >> this is a sweet theme. here we just have dessert and champagne. this is great because you don't have to spend time at the party or getting ready for it. we've taken a broken candlestick and glued it to the bottom of a plate to make cake stands. we filled them up with macaroons, cupcakes, things that are pink and red. just put a self-serve champagne bar out. simple. put out pretty garnishes and your guests will be good to go. i used corks to mark down the garnishes. >> take us to the end, please. >> we want to greet our guests at the door ant set the mood there guests would hang their
