there are some changes moving through, especially into the northeast, up around the upper midwest, the northern plains, the snow that was in the northwest starts to spread into places like wyoming and we see a lot of wind whipping things around there in minneapolis on new year's eve. windy down into chicago, as well. most of the snow stays to the west of new york city. a few showers in the morning and we'll clear out. icy roads expected in new england. temperatures in the low 50s today here around the big apple, cooling off tonight into the 30s for the big ball drop. 42 degrees at minneapolis. you can see where the colder air is, the milder air to the south with the yellow and orange shaded areas. on new year's day, snow showers around the lakes. we'll see some good snow bands down wind of lake ontario and lake erie on sunday. but looking dry for much of the country. the mild air stays in place in orlando. still near 80 degrees, one of

the warmer decembers we've had, no doubt about that. monday, snow showers lingering here and adding up the snow in cleveland, pittsburgh. tuesday, this is when we quiet down. looking at the map, there's not going to be a lot happening. but that cold air across the east, and you're going to feel that shock to the system with overnight temperatures falling into the single digits. the start of 2012, not looking too bad across much of the country with the exception of that cold air wedged in here east of the mississippi and we'll feel it all the way down into the south, as well. tune in for "wake up with al" every weekday morning at 6:00 a.m. for your latest forecast on the weather channel. ♪

tomorrow is the big day, new year's eve. if you're planning on having a few friends over, why not go to extra mile and make it a night to remember? >> we are here with fun and easy ideas, editor at large at "southern living." >> you look gorgeous. >> so do you, two. >> it's not too late to whip up something for the party? >> absolutely not. the key for great entertaining is a theme. i have three great themes for you today. they can all be done at the last minute, very simple and can be done on a budget. first thing to do is look around your house and kind of repurpose something. we have a fresh, white brown and pear idea. this is a holiday wreath. this is one we had from halloween that was orange and black. we painted it white to greet our friends at the door with something fresh and new. we want to repurpose the holiday things we have around the house. to go with our pear theme we added pears to our floral arrangement.
