georgetown and elsewhere around the area, people are bundled up as the temperatures tumble. tomorrow the story won't be just the temps but the wind. i'm jim vance. >> the new year bringing a blast of cold air. the temperatures taking a drop today and the wind, oh, man let me tell you about the wind. doug kammerer is here tracking the wizard weather. >> it's the first cold air blast we have seen all winter long. the month of december was warm. january started off warm the 1st and 2nd on the warm side but the numbers are coming down. look at the snow across the area. we have a couple of them one out there in front royal along 66 a few showers back to the west of the blue ridge. the wind chills are the numbers we'll be talking about. it feels like 18 in hagerstown, 19 in martens burg. 20 in manassas and 26 in

washington. the wind chills may not make it up this high all day tomorrow. we'll talk more about the temperatures and the wind chill and the wind that's really going to make it cold. i'll have that for you coming up in a couple of minutes. this is the final night of campaigning before the iowa caucuses tomorrow. the first real test for republicans who want to take on president obama. tonight three of the candidates claim they can win. steve handelsman has more on this. >> reporter: good evening from iowa a lot of iowa republicans are undecided even tonight. tuesday's results and outcomes to be announced at caucus headquarters are in doubt. staffers hurried to say he didn't mean it but mitt romney for the first time predicted victory in the caucuses. >> we're going to win this thing with all of our passion and strength and do everything we can to get the campaign on the

compete here but we were able to do it. why? because money doesn't buy iowa. hard work, good ideas, strong principles. >> reporter: all three, santorum, paul, and romney will take this fight on to new hampshire. so will newt gingrich. and the romney campaign thinkings he is the main threat. i'm steve handelsman, news4. back to you. president obama also will be courting voters in iowa. he is hosting a live web chat tomorrow with supporters in that state. that throws of course the ten-day vacation that the first family had in hawaii. they wrapped up their trip today. they are scheduled back in washington tomorrow morning. aides say that mr. obama is ready to jump into campaign mode now. on wednesday he will be in cleveland to talk about the economy. a mother reported being kidnapped last week in chinatown and sexually assaulted with her toddler still in the backseat.

jackie bensen live in chinatown with new developments tonight. jackie? >> reporter: news4 learned there is some reason to believe that this may not have been a random attack. d.c. police detectives have conducted additional interviews with the woman who told police that a man got in her car and later sexually assaulted her 5th at gunpoint while her 15-month-old son was in the backseat. sources tell news4 the victim said it happened 7:30 p.m. on thursday minutes after leaving a child custody meeting downtown. sources say she told detectives the man said things he indicated he was familiar with her child custody agreement. the victim said that the man forced her to drive to a location she did not recognize and fled on foot. joe yan newhouse says news of the crime has caused concern in the neighborhood. >> i think residents are

concerned but we are also aware that the police are investigating this and i think they are reacting cautiously. we'll wait to see what happens. >> iter the police report indicates that the woman was driving a car with ohio plates. aaron and jim back to you. >> thank you. police say a dispute between brothers ended with one man dead and another wounded. that happened this afternoon on eagle harbor road. investigators say after an argument the an shot his younger brother in the back before taking his own life. the younger brother is expected to recover. a third person in that home was grazed by a bullet but not seriously hurt. a man who worked as a vendor in the even market in d.c. is the city's first murder victim of 2012. he is 56 years old. his body was found in the park in northeast d.c. on december 31st.

but it wasn't until the next day, january 1st that the medical examiner ruled the death a homicide. he was beaten and strangled. his brother believes that money was the motive for the murder. so far, no one has been arrested. for the first time in 50 years there has not been a murder in arlington county for the entire year. the national murder rates suggested that a jurisdiction size of the county should have ten murders a year. but they had one each in 2010 and 2009. the county board members credit investments to public safety and community policing for the low crime rate. a night of celebrating ends in tragedy. two people died in an accident in bethesda. a 20-year-old and 18-year-old were killed when the driver of the suv they were in lost control on jones bridge road at

3:00 a.m. on sunday. the suv jumped the sidewalk, smashed through a fence and into a tree. friends gathered at the crash site to mourn and to remember. >> someone so young never had a chance to fulfill anything she wanted. it is terrifying. if anything i don't want to lose anyone else. >> three others survived that crash, including the driver who is in serious condition. the group was at new year's eve party and investigators found beer in the suv but they are not say for the driver had been drinking. the search for a man suspected of killing a park ranger in washington state is over now, a body found at mount rainier national park has been identified as benjamin barnes. he was found in deep snow without a coat and missing a shoe. he is an iraq war veteran who is accused of shooting margaret

anderson as he sped through a check point on sunday. police believe barnes was running away to that area after shooting four people at a house party earlier in the day. there are reports that an immigration dispute may be behind one of the worst cases of arson in los angeles in two decades. officers arrested harry burkhart. they believe he set 50 fires in and around l.a. since thursday. police released video of him leaving one of the scenes. he is a 24-year-old german citizen who was reportedly upset his mother was being deported. the l.a. times reports the police found materials for setting fires inside his vans. >> all the sleepless nights it has been like a batman movie where they are chasing somebody. >> investigators say the fires caused $2 million in property damage. no one was seriously hurt.

construction around tyson's corner is about to go from bad to worse. virginia department of transportation crews will soon begin to demolish the old bridge over the beltway. it is one of 20 bridges that will be replaced as part of the h.o.t. lanes project. it starts tomorrow at 11:00 p.m. and they will stop at 4:00 a.m. on saturdays the work will continue until 7:00 in the morning. they expect it to take three to four weeks to remove the bridge as long as the weather cooperates. expect lane closures on the beltway at the overpass. good news for arlington. the county plans to install a realtime travel system along the highway showing you how long it takes to get from one point to another. will the be ten miles long with message signs at multiple points. county leaders hope to have the project finished this time next

imagine taking a wrong turn and getting lost in a massive state park in maryland. that's what happened on new year's eve to a hiker in frederick county. he was lost for seven hours until his iphone saved the day

and maybe even his life. shomari stone has the story. >> reporter: we're in a maryland state police hangar in frederick. this is the helicopter that found the hiker. there was a medic and pilot on board. >> i know you are a happy dog. >> reporter: chris and boo celebrate 2012. >> i'm grateful. >> reporter: after being lost for seven hours on new year's eve hiking in western maryland. they started their trek at 1:00 in the afternoon. >> i was on one hiking trail and it crossed with another which i knew went back to the parking lot but i went the wrong direction. >> reporter: they walked eight miles. chris called 911 and tried but couldn't tell police where he was. >> it had me on the southern edge of the next park up instead of the northern edge of the park i was in. >> reporter: the police searched in their helicopter. chris pulled out his iphone and

turned on the flashlight app. the maryland state police found chris by using the night vision goggles. >> we illuminated him and tried to make him more accessible. the people on the ground were having a hard time getting to them. >> reporter: the rescuers found him. he celebrated his return at a new year's eve party with his wife. he total her his new year's resolution. >> not to get lost. >> reporter: next time he will hike with a map and a compass. we talked to the authorities and they said to hike with a friend and make sure you let people know where you're going. i'm shomari stone. back to you. in utah three kids are safe tonight thanks to some quick thinking good samaritans who jumped into an icy river to save them. police say their father hit the brakes to avoid an accident and plunged the car into the water

near salt lake city on saturday. the father got out but a four-year-old and two nine-years-old were trapped inside the car. several bystanders jumped in to pull the kids out. they are all home tonight and okay. the manager of a marriott hotel in denver said that his staff is working to figure out why guests were locked out of a their rooms for hours on new year's eve. electronic room keys there stopped working. some fell asleep in the hallway. police were called in. guests couldn't get back in their rooms until 3:00 in the morning. everyone's room was comped. there were no reports of any key card problems at any of the other hotels. >> never occurred to me to sit down in the hallway and go to sleep. >> find another hotel. >> it's new year's eve. let the party continue.

>> that's what some of them did. >> that's right. >> doug is it icy out there tonight. >> it is cold. and it is. we talked about this. you do not like the cold at all. jim you say bring it on. it's coming if you are ready or not. is it coming. but take a look around georgetown. aaron is inside and apparently so is everybody else. there is nobody out there on the road. this is out on wisconsin avenue near the georgetown area. there is one guy. and he has his hat and coat on. i know that aaron likes his ear muffs too. right now it is calm and clear and the temperatures are going down. the high temperature was 49 degrees at 12:45 in the morning. the temperatures came down during the early morning hours. the low temperature of 36 and below that now. we saw snow flurries today and another day above average.

tomorrow will not be above average. here is the country temperature 34 degrees. the dew point at 17. the winds are gusting 15 to 20 miles per hour and that gives us a wind chill in the 20s and teens in some locations. here are the actual temperatures. 32 in culpepper. 35 in annapolis and 36 in cambridge. you add in the winds and you get wind chills in the teens. 19 in martens burg and that is on the cold side. but tomorrow i don't think we will see numbers this high. the storm 4 doppler radar is showing a snow shower by front royal that may make its way to warrenton. but as we widen out you can see more in the way of the lake effect snow showers coming down. pittsburgh and cleveland seeing good snows and also in new york

off lake ontario and lake erie. and this is sherman, new york. they are seeing the snow. lake effect snow warnings could see upwards of a foot of snow. and that lake effect could go for most of the week as the area of low pressure is sitting around this area. cold and windy across the area this evening. breezy tonight but the winds come back in full force. 30 to 35-mile-per-hour winds couldn't be surprised if the higher peaks see 40 miles per hour tomorrow. wednesday still cold and breezy. but i don't think we see 30-mile-per-hour winds. but we will see the wind chills in the 20s all day wednesday after teens all day tomorrow. here's the wind chill forecast taking you through tonight. accurate for where we have it today. 7:00 tomorrow morning, 13 in frederick, 16 in manassas. 4:30 tomorrow afternoon this is
