the search is on for whoever it was that shot this puppy three times. first breaking news. a metro passenger robbed by three men in masks. shomari stone joins us there live with the latest. >> reporter: police are telling us that this whole robbery was over an iphone. the men were wearing machks and walked up to a man at the metro heights station. one of the men had a gun, demanded the iphone and ran off number one was hurt. metro police are looking for the three men. it's important to point out that the metro station is open. live at the capitol heights station i'm shomari stone. back to you. back to the be uppy shot and killed now. police are trying to solve this crime with forensic evidence.

jackie bensen spoke with the owner of the dog tonight. >> we were trying to find heidi and couldn't. we drove around for hours. and we did all the roads in case she had been hit. which i didn't think he she had gotten out. >> reporter: lynette describes the search for her seven-month-old golden retriever heidi and the awful moment of finding her dead in the backyard of the farmhouse. >> just total disbelief and shock. i could take something happening her and understanding it. but this is beyond understanding. >> reporter: coffman is used to helping dogs in need. she and her family have fostered abandoned golden retrievers at their farmhouse for many years. >> just lots of love. >> reporter: but now she needs help and answers. she called a vet friend who helped her retrieve the body of

through earlier and it cold enough that anything that falls is sticking to the grass and the cars. not enough to cause any problems and just enough to show the flakes on the cars. but the snow is making its way off to the east into maryland right now and st. mary's county. that's about it. the temperatures have gone up over the last hour in the district. 35 degrees here. 37 in fredericksburg. but colder to the west. 23 right now in winchester. another chance for snow tonight. i'll show you coming up. metro does not expect the freezing temperatures to create more problems in the morning. cracks were found in the rails in two spots this morning after the bitter cold temperatures overnight. the cracks were yellow and red lines, delaying tens of thousands of passengers this morning. but the rails were repaired and metro does not foresee delays

tomorrow morning. this maryland father faces charges after police say he left two young children in the car in the cold while he went shopping. the man is accused of living a five-month-old and four-year-old unattended for 20 minutes yesterday. he was allegedly shopping at the wal-mart in frederick. it was 24 degrees outside at the time. the children are now with their mother. cold outside tonight and indoors for hundreds near fox hall village. 2200 customers near fox hall and reservoir roads were left in the dark this evening. a bad underground cable caused the outage. the water is back on in buoy, maryland after a water main broke this evening. the crews were repairing a small

she is dropping out today. three candidates are joining the lawsuit against virginia. they claim that the ballot access law is unconstitutional. it requires candidates to collect 10,000 signatures. mitt romney and ron paul are the only ones on the virginia ballot. president obama announced he will use his recess power to appoint richard cord ray as the director of the consumer financial protection bureau. republicans in congress opposed the appointment because the senate is not in recess. they warn he will fight a court fight. the president used recess power to appoint three people to the national labor board. the people at the occupy d.c. camps were hard at work tonight before a round of inspections by the early department tomorrow. both camps were cleaning up as

the health department will check on the living condition of the protesters at mcphearson square and freedom plaza. there will be an inspection of the kitchen at mcphearson square. that was shut down yesterday because of concerns about cleanliness and rats. it's not clear what actions the city will take if the reports find any unsanitary living conditions there. a former nfl player arrested in a drug sting will face federal charges. a grand jury handed up an indictment against sam hurd. he was a wide receiver for the bears. he was arrested after a meeting in which he tried to buy weekly shipments of cocaine and marijuana from an undercover officer in amounts that would have made him one of chicago's top distributors. the grandmother of a boy shot in texas today is asking whether other steps could have

been taken. officers shot him in the hallway after he wouldn't drop what they thought was a handgun. it was a pellet gun that looked real. it is still not clear what the boy's intent was. the school is going to be closed tomorrow. bail for the man accused of starting a rash of fires in hollywood has been set at $2.8 million. the arraignment was postponed for the man named harry burkhart. he is a german national here. the los angeles times is reporting that charging documents claim he was motivated by rage against americans. he is accused of starting four dozen fires over new year's weekend. the damage is estimated at $3 million. he is facing 28 counts of arson. a car theft got out of control in fresno, california this morning. the guy was driving this car too

young people. so snow flurries out there tonight. >> that was exciting. >> two nights in a row of snow showers in the area and the first arctic outbreak of the season. this is the only taste of winter that we have seen since winter started on december 1st. and it has been warm the entire time. a nice shot of the capitol in the distance looking under the awning of the newseum. cool but not as cold as yesterday. the temperatures got up to 35 degrees. that is the current temperature. we have gone up a degree over the last hour. the low temperature was 17. that is the coldest air we have seen in about a year. some areas out in the west had a temperature of 7 degrees this morning. the coldest night since last january. the temperatures now 35 degrees and staying there as we see the cloud cover across the area and

the winds out of the south we are going to be about 10 so 15 degrees warmer than last night. winchester at 25 degrees. 28 in culpepper. 37 in fredericksburg. looking at clearing skies. we saw snow that made its way through earlier. this is where it is right now in calavert county and st. mary's county and it continues to move off to the east. you can see this over the past couple hours how it has come across the area. not everybody has picked up the snow but is it a dusting in some locations as the surface temperatures have been low for some time. here is the storm right here and another storm back to the west. a little one but it could produce snow flurries and maybe snow showers but it won't cause problems in the morning. 29 in pittsburgh, 35 in washington but back to the west much warmer.

61 in dallas and that is what we will see move into the area. the cold air getting out of here. the mild air moving up from the south. the temperatures in the mid-40s tomorrow at or above average tomorrow and everybody is above average by the end of the week. friday and saturday we have temperatures back in the 50s. looking very good as we end the week and start off on the weekend. tomorrow morning still cool but not cold out there. possibly flurries and maybe a snow shower with the next system. tomorrow afternoon clouds to sun not as cold. the sunset after 5:00 for the first time this year. 40 to 45 for the high temperatures and the high temperatures keep getting higher. 54 on friday, 52 on saturday and the numbers dip down into the mid-40s sunday and monday. the next real chance for precipitation will come with a big storm system next week. that coming on wednesday but it looks like rain. >> warmer sounds good. still ahead a private game
