conference calls trying to force newt gingrich and perry to quit the race and throw their support to santorum in the conservative effort to stop romney. live from manchester, new hampshire, i'm steve handelsman, news 4. back to you. >> thank you, steve. president obama plans to include a small pay raise for federal employees in the 2013 budget if congress approves the race. it will be the first since a two-year freeze went into effect in 2010. they thought of extending it to fund a payroll tax cut that expires at the end of february. the raise proposal has not been announced yet. it was report ed by "the washington post." a developing story on metro tonight. the transit agency ordered hundreds of inspections after another incident where the train's braking system fell on to the tracks. it happened today outside the stadium armory station.

derrick ward is in the area with more. >> reporter: metro has 1,142 rail cars in their fleet. they are going to have their hands full this evening and the next couple days inspects over 400 of them because of a piece that fell off earlier today. before noon, this train was leaving the stadium armory station when a piece of the braking assembly came off. it's similar to this friction ring that came off last week. a track worker happened to see today's incident. the worker flagged the train down. the car was inspected. now, more inspections system wide. >> we are going to do it as they come in to rail yards at the end of the evening. the timing is kind of add venn teenageous. we are up against a weekend where we need fewer cars to run. >> reporter: riders are unnerved. when things fall off, there's

there is an alert to want for people who live along the potomac river. according to maryland state fire officials seven military ordinances have been found on the shore of newtown state park in st. mary's county. the park has been closed indefinitely as authorities sweep the shoreline to find explosives there. the ordinances are likely being unearthed with the tide. still no word on from where they come. on december 27th, the "uss john" aircraft carrier.

it touched out of a series of threats from iran. they helped in the rescue of several iranian fishermen. they responded to a pirate attack and chased them to their mother ship. sailors from the guided missile destroyer boarded the ship. they found 13 iranian fisherman held hostage on their own boat. the fishing boat was taken over some 40 days ago. this weekend marks the one year anniversary of the awful tragedy in tuson, arizona. six people killed in the rampage. congresswoman gabrielle giffords survi survived. she will be among the thousands that gather to honor the victims. we have the report. >> reporter: it has been a year of mourning, remembering and recovery. one year ago sunday,

be able to clear airport screening faster than the rest of us. president obama signed a law to produce and implement a plan to speed up screening for traveling military personnel in uniform and those traveling with military orders. tsa says it will allow them to focus more on higher risk travelers. the new security standards must be in place by early july. some believe the law may be a bad idea and point to last saturday's arrest of a north carolina soldier caught by tsa screeners with explosives in his carry-on bag. doug has a check on the weather. it was so delightful, it's almost scary. january 6th and it's 60-some degrees. who's complaining. >> the awful cold we had makes you appreciate a day like this. >> we started at 17 a couple days ago and we are 63 today.

i want to talk about a huge snowstorm that came to us 16 years ago today. nothing coming down the pipe. 16 years ago, do you remember where you were during the blizzard of '96? >> i do. we spent a little time here in the studio. >> i would assume so. one of the biggest storms to hit the corridor. let's see how things are here. you know, we are not seeing anything in the form of snow out there now. it is just gorgeous out there. a fantastic evening. but, it was on this date, 16 years ago, that we started to see the first flakes start flying from the blizzard of 1996. one for the record books, you betcha. from richmond up the i-95 corridor. 20 inches in washington. 21 in new york city and 19 in boston. a couple areas to the western virginia, west virginia and western portions of maryland picking up 30 inches.

what a storm that was. for those of you what the snow lovers, you would love to see this again, wouldn't you? there's nothing in the forecast. you have to go colder to get something like that today. we hit 63 degrees. today was the tenth day we have been at or above 60 since december 1st. it's been amazing how warm it has been. it looks like that warm air is going to continue for at least one more day. 58 is the current temperature with winds out of the south-southwest. 56 in martinsburg. 54 toward the river. here we are at 6:00 at night and temperatures in the mid-50s. unbelievable for this time of year. temperatures were 20 degrees above average today. nothing to show you here. we widen out and see moisture to the west. this is rain toward chicago. minnesota, wisconsin, normally for them, this is snow. this is a cold front that's going to make its way to the southeast. it will produce cooler weather for us over the next few days.

positive economic news. some, say the economy is not improving fast enough. brian mooar with the report. >> reporter: the u.s. economy picked up another 200,000 jobs last month easing unemployment to the lowest level in nearly three years. >> it is important for the american people to recognize we have added 3.2 million new private sector jobs over the past 22 months. nearly 2 million new jobs last year alone. >> reporter: it's good news for president obama in this election year. he's crediting the middle class tax cut. >> the economy is moving in the right direction. we are creating jobs on a consistent basis. we are not going to let up. >> unemployment is down from 9.6% in 2010. the nation has 6 million fewer jobs. >> 200,000, good but not good

enough. >> unemployment stands at 8.5%. those who have given up looking for a job or stuck in part time jobs, the underemployment rate is above 15%. labor statistics show a corelation between education and employment. 13.8% for workers with less than a high school diploma. the unemployment rate stands at the lowest level since january, 2009. the strong jobs report was not enough to offset investor worries about the euro crisis. the dow was down 55 points. nasdaq up four and s&p 500 was down three points. the housing market is still struggling.

property values in maryland plummeted with the biggest declines in prince george's county. they suffered a 36.5% drop. "the washington examiner" reports it's the worst drop in the county in five years. montgomery county saw a 13% drop. it's slightly less than the 17%. state officials say the drop is not surprising because 80% of home sales there last year were foreclosures or short sales. coming up tonight, justice for the family of a 2-year-old child thrown from a parking overpass at tyson's corner. raising questions about the safety of this road. the occupy movement is heading indoors. it's not because of the cold weather. coming up in sports, steps up to the mic about the penn up to the mic about the penn state hiring process.

masks shot 36-year-old gregory sears in front of his house. he died at the hospital. detectives are still trying to figure out who did it and why. three workers rushed to the hospital after a fire at a warehouse in maryland. the fire broke out 10:30 this morning on corporate boulevard. they found three workers injured after shelving collapsed inside the warehouse. their injuries were not life threatening. there's no word on how this fire started. prince george's county, police are looking for a hit and run driver in oxon hill. somebody slammed into a couple crossing oxon hill road this morning, then sped away. police are searching for the person responsible. that accident is also raising questions about the safety of that road. erika gonzalez has the report. >> reporter: police need help tracking down the driver who struck two people in an early morning hit and run accident in

prince george's county. >> possibly a small compact gray vehicle. it should have front end damage on it if anyone has information on it, call us. >> reporter: just before 7:00 this morning, a couple was hit crossing the the street in the middle of the 6200 block of oxon hill road in oxon hill, maryland. >> the area was not a crosswalk area. >> reporter: the nearest one is 200 yards away. the man is expected to live. the woman sustained critical injuries. we caught multiple people crossing the same street in the same place as the victims. one, two, three, at least 12 people dangerously dodged traffic within 20 minutes of us being there. residents like john lewis say police in that area don't enforce the law like they used to. do you know it's illegal to cross without a crosswalk? >> i didn't know that.

it's called jaywalking, right? they used to give tickets to people. they don't do that anymore, so they do it all the time. >> reporter: ron was one of those people until he got hit by a car. he was riding his bike down the same street the victims were hit when it happened. >> very few crosswalks. i mean, you know, you are at your own risk. if you get hit, it's on you. >> reporter: now, he has a steel plate in his leg and says it's as dangerous a street as ever. police say it's illegal to cross the street here in maryland without using a pedestrian crosswalk. erika gonzalez, news 4. more drivers in fairfax county got behind a wheel after drinking this past holiday season. it went up by 12%. police arrested 358 drunk drivers during the safe december initiative.

wall street journal ranked the top airlines for customer service. topping the list is alaska air. it is the smallest of the seven major carriers surveyed. second place went the delta. southwest came in third. then, it's down to u.s. airways, jetblue, united, continental and american airlines. the report looked at flight delays and cancellations, lost luggage and customer complaints. they used all those things to come up with the results. some big businesses, the airlines among them, found out people don't like to pay extra fees.
