crimes. thomas will be sentenced may 3rd and could get four years in prison. then at the u.s. attorney's office and after months of solid investigation, it was prosecutors' turn the display thomas' greed and characterize how he stole money intended for city children programs. >> the victim is the whole of district of columbia including its youth. >> almost immediately, almost immediately upon taking auchs, he made a decision that he was going to systemically steal funds. >> reporter: thomas also signed a letter resigning from the d.c. council a special election likely been held in may to fill the vacant ward five seat. with thomas' probe over, attention turns to the two other high profile federal criminal investigations. one into mayor vincent gray's 2010 campaign and possible illegal use of cam pin funds. and a separate criminal probe into chairman brown's 2008 council campaign spending and

fundraising. >> i think people are really concerned. now we're looking forward to two possible elected officials who are under a similar cloud of doubt. >> mayor gray and chairman brown have each denied wrong doing. so far prosecutors are not commenting on their cases. prosecutors say thomas started stealing city money just months after getting elected to office in 2006. they say he took grant money earmarked for youth sports and treated himself to a number of things including a $58,000 car. prosecutors say thomas also used city funds to buy a motorcycle, clothes and take expensive golf trips. a man who ran against thomas in 2010 brought the entire scandal to light. tim daily believes we haven't heard the last of corruption from d.c. government. >> with the cloud of ethical cancer over our current administration, this is probably

than average before the day is said and done. our average is only 43. tomorrow be a little bit cooler. some extra clouds coming by. a little cold front going through tonight. we'll put temperatures in the upper 40s to near 50 tomorrow. still very mild by january standards. >> thank you, chuck. >> you're welcome. today metro officials begin surveying more than 400 metro rail cars. this investigation is in response to yet another mechanical failure on a metro car. news 4's erica gonzalez is at the stadium armory metro station with more on his latest incident. erica? >> reporter: good morning, chris. today is day two of inspections for metro. they'll go on throughout the weekend and the early part of next week. metro has to figure out what keeps causing the wheels of their lines to keep falling off. today we're at the stadium armory station. it was near this spot yesterday afternoon that an orange line

train one bound for new carolton lost a brake part and became disabled with passengers on board. riders were transferred to other trains at stadium armory and normal service was restored by 2:30. there were no injuries. metro says the malfunction was because rain car number 2072 lost a friction ring similar, but not nearly as dramatic as the incident just a few weeks ago when another friction ring fell off a blue line train and hit an electrified rail. customers tell us they expect metro to fix this sooner than later. >> i think the service could be better. i think the safety record stands for itself. pieces falling off of trains and trains crashing into each other is pretty self-evident. >> to me it's poor performance. i'm not trying to put the rail down, maintenance is maintenance. >> reporter: friday's incident involved a rail car that was put into service back in 1980 or

somewhere between 1980 to the 1990s. now metro rail altogether has nearly 1200 metro rail cars. but only about 500 of them will be inspected. those from three different particular series. the 2000, 3,000, 4,000 series cars. we'll have more on this story later today. >> thank you very much. those inspections won't be the only things keeping metro crews busy this weekend. workers will also be fixing the tracks on four of the five metro lines. on the red lin trains will be single tracked between dupont circle and friendship heights as well as between tacoma and forest glen. on the blue and orange lines trains will single track between the smithsonian and eastern market. on the green line trains will single track between georgia

avenue and fort totten. as we speak d dot crews are preparing to open the second phase of the 11th street bridge project. by tonight drivers will be access to 259 from the southbound freeway. the southbound ramp to 295 is also closed. the 11th street bridge project is the largest project d dot has ever under taken costing about $300 million. it's expected to be completed next year. a maryland community is playing the role of santa claus for one family. thursday night a woman and her 6-year-old daughter barely escaped a massive house fire on ashbox road. it was caused by a dry christmas tree. danielle goddard, a principal at baden elementary school jumped into action emailing families to see if they could help the family out. what makes the story better is the little girl doesn't go to

a fairfax county woman could spend the rest of her life in prison for killing her 2-year-old granddaughter. 51-year-old delarose ya was sentenced to 35 years in prison yesterday. he was found guilty of tossing her young granddaughter off a walkway at tyson's corner.

her attorney tried to use the insanity defense, but a jury rejected it. in a taped police statement last year, she revealed she was angry at her son-in-law for getting her daughter pregnant out of wedlock. five people face charges after a basketball game brawl last night in prince george's county. investigators say a scuffle broke out in the bleachers during the friendly cross lin game in fort washington. police say a student assaulted an officer who tried to break up the fight. a second officer used pepper spray to help vp no one was seriously hurt. today penn state will introduce bill o'brien as its new football coach. he's been the offensive coordinator of the new england patriots. he succeeds the legendary coach paterno who was fired two months ago in the wake of the jerry sandusky sex abuse scandal. despite being terminated the 85-year-old paterno is offering praise to o'brien. he released a statement that reads in part, i don't know

bill, but i respect his coaching record and i am particularly pleased that we share a connection to my alma mater, brown. paterno and o'brien were both brown university graduates. a california lawmaker says her brain tumor led her to shoplift. she represents the bay area for california state assembly. surveillance cameras caught her stealing $2500 worth of clothes from a neiman marcus. she said she was distracted when she walked out without paying. she pleaded no contest to a grand theft misdemeanor charge. her attorney says the tumor is benign and she's getting treatment for it. as many of us get ready to do our taxes, a new report shows $450 billion in government money recently went unpaid. the internal revenue service says 18% of people and businesses did not pay their appropriate taxes in 2006. that's $hao billion and far

exceeded the entire federal deficit at the time. the irs says most of that money came from people whob underreported their income. part of occupy d.c. is now indoors. some demonstrators at freedom plaza are in the process of moving into a pair of houses where they say they'll continue their protest. organizers say it has nothing to do with avoiding eviction or the winter temperatures. it's simply what they call the next step many the protest. demonstrators plan to raise enough money to start a public television show to spread trar message. mo testers at mcfearson square say they have no plans to head indoors. >> i'm perfectly happy to have a 65 degree day. we will be eventually have to pay the piper. there is somewhere in northern canada and siberia. >> it's brewing.

you're watching news 4, washington's news leader this is news 4 today. welcome to news 4 today i'm chris gordon. i'm angie goff. here's a look at some of this morning's top stories. former d.c. councilmember harry thomas junior is facing up to four years in prison after pleading guilty to two federal crimes. thomas admitted to stealing more than $350,000 in government money and filing false tax returns. he'll be sentenced in may. metro officials are investigating and surveying more than 400 rail cars following another mechanical incident. yesterday a brake part became detached from an orange line

train near the stadium armory station. no passengers were hurt and normal service was restored a short time later. and the republican presidential candidates fresh off the iowa caucuses are right back at it this weekend with two debates in two days. the first is a debate at a small college tonight. then "meet the press" host david gregory will moderate a debate tomorrow morning. this all leads up to the new hampshire primary on tuesday. right now congresswoman gabrielle giffords is back in tucson, arizona. the democrat arrived last night to begin commemorating the one-year and rers vi of the shooting that nearly took her life and did take the lives of six other people. tomorrow marks the one-year anniversary of that tragedy in tucson. congresswoman giffords will be one of thousands of people to gather on the university of

arizona campus to honor the victims of the shooting. it has been a year of mourning, remembrance and recovery. one year ago sunday congresswoman gabrielle giffords was shot point-blank in the head at a community event in a tucson supermarket parking lot allegedly by a 22-year-old man. witnesses say he then turned the gun on a crowd killing six including a federal judge, a giffords staff member and the youngest victim, 9-year-old christina taylor green shot as she held the hand of a neighbor who brought her to see her congresswoman. >> i call her my beautiful little angel. i just every day i talk to her. >> reporter: the anguish her family still feels is tempered by loving memories and a great sense of pride. >> our young daughter in her short nine years she achieved more things than most adults do. >> reporter: 13 people survived the shooting including giffords after months of recovery and

rehabilitation, she returned to the floor of the house of representatives in august and even served thanksgiving dinner to troops in tucson. but for those who lost loved ones in the rampage, the pain of that morning one year ago remains an open wound. >> it feels like it's been 100 years and it feels like it was yesterday. >> reporter: since the shooting honors have been bestowed on the victims including a courthouse named after the federal judge and a meeting room at the u.s. capitol named after giffords' staffer gabe zimmerman. >> tucson is not dwelling in twhapd. but it's looking to say how can we be better. >> reporter: on sunday thousands are expected to attend a candlelight vigil in tucson to remember those killed. among those attending congresswoman gabby giffords whose remarkable recovery one year later gives hope to a community still struggling to understand why. the suspect has been diagnosed with schizophrenia. he's being medicated in prison

to try to make him competent to stand trial. he has pleaded not guilty to the charges. now to decision 2012 where the countdown is on until new hampshire. just a few days until the new hampshire primary and the republican presidential hopefuls are preparing for two debates in two days. a debate at a college and a debate moderated by "meet the press" host tomorrow. mitt romney has a commanding lead in new hampshire. a new poll shows the former massachusetts governor at 42% among granite state republicans. rick santorum is in third with 13%. romney is also enjoying a big lead in south carolina as the times cnn poll show he's leading santorum and newt gingrich by double digits. new hampshire's primary is set for this tuesday while south

carolina is two weeks from today. meanwhile as rick santorum is enjoying his turn near the top of the republican field, he's also experiencing the criticism and attacks that come with it. opponents of santorum have pointed out that the former pennsylvania senator used his connections with the k street lobbyists to make a fortune as a consultant. he denied any wrong doing. >> i didn't profit off of k street. i wasn't involved at all in any kind of work on k street. >> santorum sparred with gay right activists who booed him off the stage earlier this week during an event when he compared gay marriage to polygamy. president obama is getting a bit of a boost from the most recent jobs report. the labor department announced that the economy added 200,000 new jobs in december and capped off a year of modest job growth.

the unemployment rate dipped down to 8.5%. the president says a middle class tax cut has helped. >> so the economy's moving in the right direction. we're creating jobs on a consistent basis. we're not going to let up. >> after dropping for four straight months the unemployment rate is now at its lowest level since february 2009. a new book portrays first lady michelle obama as a behind the scenes force in the white house. the book is written by "the new york times" reporter jodi cantor. in one account cantor wrote that mrs. obama was annoyed at white house strategy when the president's health care agenda seemed in danger of collapsing in early 2010. cantor also described the obamas as down to rt and committed parents. the book is based on interviews with 30 current and former aides. president obama and the first lady declined to be interviewed for the book.

pedestrian was in a crosswalk at the time. police are looking for a gray compact car with front end damage. another video of casey anthony has shown up on the web. the new clip shows the 25-year-old with red hair and a nose piercing. meanwhile, the man who posted the videos revealed himself. john briely from ohio hosts a facebook page titled boycott casey anthony's future earnings. her lawyers and parents fear for her safety they believe briely hacked into her computer to get the videos, a claim he denies. anthony is currently living in florida, serving a year of probation on an unrelated charge. an upcoming movie about the raid that killed able is under investigation from the pentagon. new york congressman peter king told "the new york times" that the movie's directors are under investigation for how they gathered material for the movie. he says the pentagon is looking

into whether they had improper access to information about the raid. he and other lawmakers have also raised questions as to whether the movie about last year's raid would exploit classified details to help president obama. white house spokesperson jay carney shot back calling the claims ridiculous. japan says last year's earthquake and tsunami has led to it shutting down three atomic reactors. the units at the fukushima plant had been used for 40 years. safety was a concern after the meltdown last year. the government says it plans to introduce legislation soon to require reactors to stop running after 40 years. many of japan's 54 reactors will reach their 40 year mark in coming years. a marine navigation tower near ocean city maryland is standing again. this video from the ocean city inlet shows a u.s. coast guard chopper picking up the tor and delivering it to its location.

the tower was knocked over from last year's hurricane. it is used to help boats navigate around the inlet. a 15-year-old girl is now back with her family after being accidentally deported to colombia. the girl arrived at dallas/fort worth international airport last night. last year she ran away from home and was arrested in houston. turner claimed that she was a 22-year-old colombian woman so she was mistakenly deported for being here illegally and spent the last eight months in bogota. >> the family's ecstatic. they're happy to have their daughter home. we are planning to get some rest. planning to do what we can to make sure that she's able to get back to living a normal life. >> while turner's family is thrilled that she's back home, they're curious as to how she could have been deported to a country where she's not a citizen.

several more days to come. satellite pictures shows the clear skies will pick up a little more cloud cover again north and west for later on this afternoon. there is a weather front moving into far northwestern ohio. that will be rolling through overnight tonight. today it will feel like march outside a real hint of early spring like weather. the front comes through late tonight and tomorrow. winds will come back to the northwest. that will keep temperatures tomorrow into the upper 40s to near 50s. still warmer than average. today absolutely flawless. mostly sunny. 20 degrees warmer than average by early january standards. then tomorrow cooler, but still nice. highs in the upper 40s to near 50. here's the extended forecast. keeping in mind that our average high is 43. every single high temperature on the forecast for the next six days is warmer than average. i do think we'll get a hint of some cold air late next week into next weekend. nothing crazy cold.
