remember those who did not. nbc's jinah kim joins us live now from tucson with more. jinah? >> reporter: good evening, aaron. it's hard to believe that it's already been a year. we all remember that event. where i am right now is the university of arizona where people are already starting to gather for a candlelight vigil that take place about 2 1/2 hours from now. now, thousands are expected to join congresswoman giffords for this final anniversary event in a weekend filled with emotional but very healing observances. across tucson, the bells began ringing at exactly 10:11 a.m. it was on this day, at this hour and minute one year ago that 19 people were gunned down at this safeway grocery story parking lot in one of the worst massacres in arizona history. today, bells tolled, flowers were laid, and tears shed for the six who lost their lives.

healing. president obama telephoned congresswoman giffords today to tell her that his spirit will be with her and the people of tucson at this candlelight vigil here tonight. now, many of the 13 survivors are expected to be here along with, of course, the family members of the fallen victims. live in stucson, jinah kim, bac to you, aaron. >> here in our area, a large group paying tribute to the shooting victims and all over the night. it's part of a candlelight vigil called too many victims. darcy spencer reports now. >> reporter: two years since the shooting on south capitol street left several people dead, the mother of one of those victims will be one of the speakers tonight here at this remembrance. 16-year-old richelle jones died in that mass shooting. her mother has become an outspoken advocate for ending gun violence since that tragedy. now, a man who survived the virginia tech massacre in 2007,

collin goddard, will also speak here this evening. william kelabrew, who witnessed his mother and brother being shot to death when he was only 10 years old in capitol heights will speak how gun violence affects young people. >> when we tell our stories, it gives permission for others to tell theirs. so i didn't know that growing up, but i held it in and i went through suicidal moments. i've been hospitalized probably nine times. >> i would just like to continue to push forward for a positive message in the community, nonviolence. gun violence is never the answer to any dispute or any violence of any sort. >> reporter: this event is among more than 60 remembrances taking place all across the country today. in northwest washington, darcy spencer, news 4. a lot of questions tonight after someone shot a man as he tried to break into an apartment in prince george's county. this happened just before 5:00 a.m. at the marlo heights apartments on 28th avenue in

temple hills. police say the suspect has a gun and was trying to break through a back door when somebody opened fire. neighbors heard the commotion. >> i heard a couple shots, and you know, you normally hear it from time to time in this area, and next thing i know, the patrol, police officer, sirens and everything. >> reporter: the suspect was taken to the hospital. police are not releasing his condition tonight. we don't know if that shot came from inside or outside the apartment and police say it's unclear if the person who shot the intruder lived at the apartment complex. now to decision 2012. we are just two days away from a new hampshire primary now. and this morning the republican candidates faced off in their second debate in 12 hours. during today's debate on "meet the press," mitt romney tried to contrast himself with president obama at the same time the other candidates took an opportunity to attack romney. >> i happen to believe that if we want to replace a lifetime politician like barack obama,

who had no experience leading anything, you have to choose someone who's not been a lifelong politician. >> i admit, i realize the red light doesn't mean anything to you, because you're the front-runner. but -- but can we drop a little bit of the pious blaloney. the fact is you ran in '94 and lost. >> ahead of tuesday's primary, mitt romney is enjoying a 20-point lead in the most recent poll. his closest competitor in that state is ron paul. democratic leaders in maryland say they're optimistic that a bill to legalize gay marriage can and will pass in the general assembly this year. the legislative session begins this week in annapolis. last week, a gay marriage bill passed the state senate, but it stalled in the house by just a few votes. this year, governor martin o'malley says the bill is one of his top priorities. maryland's house majority leader says he's optimistic as well. >> we believe we were three

votes short in the house, and the bill was sent back to committee. this year, the governor of the state of maryland, martin o'malley, is going to be the prime sponsor. he's a very persuasive guy and i suspect -- i believe that we will get the 71 votes we need and it will pass. >> another hot issue this year could be a possible gas tax hike. that would make maryland's one of the highest in the nation. and still to come on news 4, lost and found. a dog trained to save lives disappears. tonight he's back where he belongs in fairfax. we'll tell you how he got there. plus, rapper jay-z is no longer ahead with just a single lady. and look, ma, no pants. why this group in d.c. hit the town a little underdressed. chuck? that's a tease you don't hear too often. we had a beautiful

a search and rescue dog that wandered off from its trainer earlier this week has been found. vito the german shepherd was chasing a fox at white marsh fox in bowie friday when he lost his trainer. a man working nearby found the dog and after seeing a news report, he called police. that man returned the dog to his handler at a gas station last night. >> i've searched so many times for missing people, and i've been on the other side, and i certainly have felt their pain,

but, i mean, what a helpless, you know, feeling it is to just -- that whoever or whatever you're looking for is in the rest of the world. >> vito was still in training when he wandered off. he's supposed to replace his father, ced father,zaro. jay-z and beyonce are the parents of a new baby girl. they actually rented out an entire floor at the hospital there. there was some reports that the baby's name was ivy blue, but gwyneth paltrow tweeted that the baby's name is blue ivy. they have not made an official announcement just yet. this is the couple's first child. they've been married since 2008, about a 12-year age difference between the two of them, but congratulations on the baby. when we come back, saying

this evening. derrick ward got one last look inside before the old town theater is gutted later this month. >> reporter: it's one of the last times roger fonz will thread a film through this projector. it's the last day for the old town theater on kings street. built in 1914 as the richman theater with vaudeville on the bill, the name lasted until the '80s, when it became the old town. the last incarnation was owned and run by roger, so how does he feel about theater's last sunday? >> i'll feel better monday. >> you would think an in-town theater featuring first-run movies with beer and wine would have a niche. the owner says it did in the beginning, but toward the end, it became a bad combination. >> reporter: the for the restaurant business, it's a challenge of disappearing supplies. >> it's the hardest thing in a restaurant, to keep track of all that stuff. >> reporter: and for the movie side -- >> is the studios quit putting out a fine, you know, a fine

did he just drop his pants. >> i think he did. >> dozens of pranksters converged on the transit system, all lacking a key article of clothing. this event got its start in new york city back in 2002. this year, 50 different cities are participating. >> they're putting the effort into it. no doubt about that. >> good thing that backpack was there for that last one. chuck's here now. >> let's talk about the weather. >> you'd think you'd wear more today. it wasn't that nice. well, by january standards, it's still pretty nice. we made it to 52 today. that's about 9 degrees warmer than average by early january standards. no complaints there. and it was 68 degrees yesterday. so by january standards, again, a very mild weekend. so mild, in fact, that a lot of people just decided to get outside today, walking and jogging and boating and all the fun things you can do in the great outdoors. these pictures here were taken near thompson's boathouse along the waterfront there. very close to the john f. kennedy center for the performing arts. a beautiful day outside today. hopefully you had a chance to get outside and enjoy the great

weather, either yesterday or today. it isn't going to last forever. there's a great full moon out there for your sunday evening. came up a couple of hours ago ago. my colleague, tom kierein, sent me a picture of the full moon rising in montgomery county, and i have tweeted it out. so if you're following me on twitter @chuckbell4 or tom on twitter @tomkierein, go take a look at his great shot that he sent in. for now, what a nice day it was outside today. 52, our high temperature after a 41-degree start this morning. so 68 yesterday and 52 today made this the warmest january weekend in five years. january 6th and 7th of 2007 was the last time we had a january weekend milder than this one. high temperatures that saturday and sunday were 73 and 59. but it was pretty nice outside today. no doubt about it. 52 earlier. we're back down to 45 now. a north wind coming out at 8 miles per hour. generally headed back down into the 30s here over the next couple of hours. it's 44 now in ft. belvoir.

still a mostly clear sky out there, but the clouds are going to be thickening up here over the next couple of hours. so mostly clear for now. going over to mostly cloudy, shortly after 11:00 p.m. temperatures should be back down into the upper 30s everywhere by then. nothing showing up on doppler around here, except for a few false returns. sprinkles down around the carolinas and georgia. a little light rain down in indiana. these two systems will combine forces to put clouds back in our skies overnight tonight and a chance for a little light rain coming our way tomorrow. there's the clearer skies out there for now. a little area of low pressure developing down to our south is going to skirt in our direction. so clouds come in tonight, mainly just clouds. any rain we get tomorrow is going to be very, very light. and mostly from the d.c. metro area southbound into southern maryland and into central virginia. that should be ending shortly after that. and tuesday's looking nice. so for the rest of the overnight hours, cloudy tonight and chilly. chance of a few sprinkles south. lows generally in the 30s. and then for tomorrow, plenty of clouds around. chance of a few light rain

four-yard touchdown. new york takes the lead. i like it when there's a guy in the nfl with the same name as myself. it's kind of cool. third quarter, falcons down 10-2. already stopped earlier in the game and they're stopped again. they get stuffed by the giants' defense. take another look. matt ryan get is no push and they turn it over on downs. giants' defensive coordinator, perry fuel, loving it. that would prove costly for atlanta. hakem does the rest. makes some moves, 72-yard touchdown for hakem the dream. he finished with 115 yards receiving and two tds. manning flew had no interceptions. new york defeats atlanta, 24-2. the giants will play the packers next sunday in green bay. win one for the gipper. those were the words legendary notre dame football coach newt rockny used to motivate his team against army in the 1928. the fighting irish went on to win this game.

the washington wizards are just trying to win one game. coach flip saunders says he's actually run out of motivational messages, so maybe the wizards should rally around their coach and one one for the flip. >> flipper! >> saunders facing his former team, the minnesota timb timberwolves. wide open for the alley-oop. rubio had 13 points and 14 assists. third quarter, wizards down 10. john wall with the ball. drives strong to the bucket and this is a monster dunk. wall had ten points, but on just three of ten shooting. wizards within eight. but that's as close as they get. down 19, wall throws it away and kevin love tracks it down and then throws it down. he had 20 points, 16 rebounds. the wizards shot just 34% from the field. they lose 93-72, dropping their record to 0 and 8. here's flip.
