>> the biggest thing about this snow, this is going to go down as the biggest snow so far this winter. at least for the airport where we picked up about 0.2 inch of snow so far. many areas did pick up a lot more than that to the north and west during our october snowfall. storm 4 doppler radar showing this is now coming to an end and will continue over the next hour or so to do so. the only remaining snow is around the i-95 corridor off toward the east in through southern maryland. you can see that as we widen out and put it on sensitive mode. the heaviest snow right now around the waldorf area just off to the east and through charles county in through calvert county, southern prince georges, southern anne arundel county, around annapolis and down toward st. mary's. we are going to continue to see snow there for about the next hour. still at the airport seeing a temperature there of 34 degrees. winds out of the south-southeast at 5 miles an hour. those temperatures right at or just above freezing so so far not too many problems on the roads. we only have to go down about a degree or two to start to see the problems manifest themselves

on the roadways. give yourself a little extra time. outside right now to talk more about it, we have shomari stone still seeing a few flakes there. >> reporter: right now that snow is coming down. it's relatively light. however, i tell you, over the last 30 minutes or so it was picking up a little bit. you come right over here a lot of drivers we actually found this woman. she was driving around with this snow covering her back windshield. i told her to stop and i would actually clean it for her. this is a good investment right here. i got it around $8 at a drug store. i tell you one thing. it's worth having one of these. let's roll video to show you what it's like on the roads. we drove around and haven't seen a lot of accumulation but the pavement, you know, temperatures injure the lower 40s. and this is a good thing for a lot of drivers. we drove around and it was slippery. you definitely want to -- don't want to be out here. moments ago i talked to a woman and she explains what precautions she is taking. what's it like driving in this snow? >> it's a little tough. you have to be a little careful

doesn't see paul and says he doesn't see the charges that he, romney, was a predatory capitalist as obstacles to what many here see as romney's roll to the nomination. live from manchester i'm steve handelsman, news 4. >> it's going to get interesting. thanks, steve. there is going to be a new chief of staff at the white house at the end of the month. today william daley resigned. daley says he wants to go back to chicago to spend more time with his family. daley was chosen chief of staff about a year ago. he was not expected to leave until after the november election. he'll be replaced by budget director jack lew. after three days of silence mayor vincent gray is speaking out. he says he is outraged by the crimes committed by former d.c. council member harry thomas junior. tom sherwood is here with more on how the mayor plans to move forward amid the scandal. doreen, thomas stole money intended for children. he is gone but some are asking shouldn't there be more outrage? even the d.c. government

directory shows no sign of harry thomas jr. or his ward 5 office. and the d.c. elections board meets wednesday to set a replacement special election in may. thomas left federal court friday a convicted felon for stealing more than $350,000 in city funds intended for youth organizations and tax evasion. he'll be sentenced in may to as much as four years in prison. mayor gray who for months urged citizens to await the judicial process did call for thomas to resign but declined to comment on his crimes. news 4 monday first showed gray the 21-page court document detailing thomas's many thefts from children's programs. >> i think we are trying to figure out how to move fron this. >> are you personally also outraged? >> oh, yeah. >> knowing him and his whole family? >> i know tommy and his family well and i have a lot of compassion for them in this situation but at the same time this is something that never should have happened. >> reporter: thomas is the first

council member to resign under a legal cloud since home rule began in 1975. some leaders say personal relationships with thomas's family muted their criticism at first but they are offended. >> for any public official to steal money is just outrageous beyond the pale and he deserves whatever prison time he gets as does any other elected official who falls into that category. >> i had an opportunity to read a 21-page document over the weekend again and it is something that is absolutely positively wrong. >> reporter: both brown and mayor gray also are facing criminal probes into their separate campaign activities. prosecutors have not commented about either the gray or kwame brown investigations. theirs involve campaign money not government money. >> we do anticipate something in the near future on those two cases. right? or do you know? do we have any idea? >> i'm not sure what near future

means. in the government it can mean anything. the u.s. attorney has said he is working on this as diligently as possible. and he understands the urgency of the issue. >> okay. we'll take him at his word. thank you. police are looking for suspects in an armed robbery spree in northwest d.c. the three robberies happened in the course of ten minutes beginning at 6:30 last night. they happened on warren street and porter street in cleveland park and then again on 39th street in friendship heights. police say a hand gun was shown in at least one of the incidents. nobody was injured. a teenager was shot and killed over a pair of $200 sneakers. it happened yesterday morning in the 5700 block of foote street in northeast washington. pat collins talked with the victim's family and pat is at homicide headquarters in southeast with more. >> reporter: doreen, a robbery of a pair of shoes turns into a case of murder and tonight a

19-year-old is dead. we begin our story with some words from the mayor. >> and the circumstances are not only tragic but incredibly disquieting. >> reporter: this is a nike rookie basketball shoe. these shoes are very popular. they cost about $200 a pair. for david robinson, the price was much higher. they cost him his life. >> for him to die this way, for them to take some tennis shoes that they could have got themselves was just uncalled for. >> reporter: the victim david robinson, 19 years old. his family said he had a job at home depot, a girlfriend, and baby on the way. >> i would rather for them to just beat him up and take the tennis shoes than actually kill him. then have you to shoot him two or three times in his back? >> reporter: david robinson lives in northwest. saturday night he and a cousin

were visiting friends in far northeast around 2:30 sunday morning he and his cousin were waiting in a bus stop to go home. some men in an suv pull up. one of them steals the nike shoes. shots are fired and david robinson ends up dead. in addition police say shots were fired at the getaway car as well. >> and you found a gun near the scene? >> that's correct. >> and you believe that gun may have been used to fire at the car? that. >>'s a possibility that we're checking into. >> could the gunshots have come from the victim or somebody else? >> at this time they could have come from either one of those possibilities. >> reporter: they've cleaned up the crime scene tape but it's not going to be that easy to erase the memory of what happened here at 58th and foote streets northeast. >> you're not suppose today rob people for their tennis shoes. get a job and work and get stuff on your own. >> it's a real sad thing to do.

iran for the first time when he was arrested. officials at the state department say iran has a history of falsely accusing people of being spies and of holding innocent americans for political reasons. hekmati has 20 days to appeal his sentence. >> a florida man has been arrested and accused of carrying out a series of terror bombings. the suspect is a former u.s. citizen from yugoslavia described as a dedicated jih jihadist. he was eager to sacrifice his own life to kill as many americans as possible. >> reporter: authorities describe sami osmakac as an islamic extremist willing to die to terrorize his adopted country. the yugoslavian born 25-year-old was arrested saturday after giving an undercover investigator a downpayment on guns and explosives that were to be used in a string of deadly night club bombings. his extremist views were on public display back in april.

this youtube video shows him scuffling with a group of street ministers after trading religious insults outside a lady gaga concert. though he claims self-defense, he was taken away in handcuffs. this was five months before he came to the attention of federal authorities. his father calls it all a mistake. >> a mistake. >> reporter: his brother calls it a setup. >> they rushed in here. they had no guns in here. didn't even find a knife in the house. this better be cleared up because i know for a fact he has nothing to do with this. they're trying to set him up. >> reporter: a federal affidavit says the suspect wanted a small arsenal, one ak at least, a couple uzis, ten grenades minimum, and explosives, specifically an explosive belt. when asked whether he wanted to back out, the would-be bomber said, they can take me in five million pieces. and we all have to die, why not die the islamic way? authorities say the suspect

made an eight-minute video explaining his motivations. payback for the treatment of muslims. brian mohr, nbc news, washington. >> doug hears with more about our snowy weather. i bet there's a whole lot of kids right now hoping the snow will be a little more substantial. >> hoping to get out of school tomorrow? >> exactly. >> i don't think that is going to happen. but, you know, that being said, we didn't think we'd see all of this accumulation either. we talked about this last week, that this storm would most likely stay a little further to the south but it made its way up here. we saw accumulation and have seen at least a few problems out there but fortunately for us the roads have been very, very warm. this was warranton a little earlier. everything covered. this area saw about 1 to 2 inches of snow. also in the portions as you cross over the border into prince william county seeing that snow around gainsville, manassas, a pretty good area of snow, too. we did pick up some snow but notice there the roadways were a-okay. this is another picture. i didn't think we'd see it today. i didn't think we'd be making snowballs across the area.

center vishlgs virginia, look at these girls out having a good time. the big snowball. the other girl putting a snowball on her head. how about up toward brookville where my friend joe sent in a great picture of a nice horse there. a couple sheep off in the distance. starting to cover the ground in brookville, maryland. the heaviest snow stayed to the south. here it is over the last couple hours moving on out of here. we are just about done with this little bit of a snowstorm and it was just that. a little snowstorm. but believe it or not, it was still the biggest snowstorm that we have seen so far at the airport. now we did see a bigger snow in october for most of you back to the north and west but for the airport this is the biggest snow. i'll show you in a second. as it moves out of here still seeing snow into portions of southern maryland right to the south of waldorf down through portions of calvert county. comes in as pink here on our radar screen. but this is still snow around calvert beach right around the huntington area and diehl and southern anne arundel county. it will continue to move on out of here. for the record today as i mentioned we did see the biggest snowfall of the season.

0.6 inches of snow at the airport. high today 40 degrees. the temperature has come down over the last couple hours due to the fact we've seen that snow. where has the temperature been? this a picture from nokesville, a christmassy pitch wur a nice tree. 63 on your friday. we were at 68 degrees on saturday. unbleeelievableable how warm we been. 52 yesterday and then today 40 and we see the snow come through dropping our temperatures just a. we call it a weird january. yeah. you bet. kind of a weird winter so far. 34 degrees the current temperature out there right now with winds out of the south-southeast at about 5 miles an hour. the key here is as far as the snow and wet roadways is concerned is going to be the temperatures. we're talking about a temperature of freezing right now in manassas so watch out. some of the bridges and overpasses will be the first ones to see any freezing temperatures or any frozen precipitation there so watch out around winchester. gaithersburg, washington right now above the freezing mark.

but i wouldn't be surprised to see some areas go below freezing overnight. that could pose some problems on the roadways so give yourself a little bit of extra time overnight. watch out tomorrow morning as you head off to school or to work tomorrow. so cool temperatures, yeah. you bet. as the area of low pressure moves across the area. tomorrow we're going to see some very nice weather on our tuesday but then we shift things again and we watch a very potent storm. this one is going to be a strong one. it's going to make its way up from the west. this one will be all rain. we're talking about a lot of rain. maybe 1 to 2 inches of rain in parts of the area. not just that but it's also going to move on through when we told you last week this one would be a game changer. it's going to allow some very cold air behind it to swing on in here during the day on thursday and into friday. friday, saturday, sunday look like they're going to be the coldest period that we've seen so far this winter at least in the number of days with temperatures at 30 degrees. now snow ending and some clearing overnight. it will remain on the chilly side. tomorrow morning you're going to wake up to some cool numbers but

it was a busy weekend for metro. the transit agency inspected hundreds of rail cars after a safety scare at the end of last week. part of a brake fell off a train on the orange line. metro has decided to replace hundreds of parts to try to prevent any more problems as erika gonzalez tells us. >> reporter: metro says replacing nearly 300 friction rings on its rail cars is a precautionary measure. >> we are moving through this review, this investigation, as judiciously as carefully as we can. we want to understand the underlying cause as much as anyone does. >> reporter: it spent the weekend inspecting 464 rail cars. this after an orange line train bound for new carrollton friday afternoon lost a brake part and became disabled with passengers onboard. riders were transferred to other trains at stadium armory and normal service was restored

within a few hours. there were no injuries. but this wasn't a first for metro. a few weeks ago another friction ring fell off a blue line train and hit an electrified rail terrifying riders. >> ever since the last two accidents i don't feel comfortable. >> reporter: others like cheryl ringle say they trust metro to solve problems before they turn into serious concerns. >> i love the metro because i don't own a car and i either walk or take the metro. so if they've got something to replace i say do it. >> reporter: what caused the friction rings to fall off is still under investigation. metro says normal wear is common but now rail cars in the 2000, 3000, and 4000 series lines which were the ones inspected over the weekend will now be under extreme scrutiny. >> any time the friction ring shows where it is going to get replaced that's the new standard as this investigation moves forward. >> reporter: some passengers say the extra precautions give peace

of mind. erika gonzalez, news 4. drivers could get paid to car pool to military bases in northern virginia. the northern virginia regional commission is sponsoring a new ride share program. it's for department of defense employees and government contractors who work at quantico, the mark center, and arlington hall. the sponsors are hoping to get 1,000 riders and 500 drivers to participate. the drivers will be paid $25 in gas per month. there will also be a $1 per rider and 20 cent per mile fee after the first five trips. it's all being paid for by grants from the federal government and the virginia department of transportation. sign ups for the program will begin in march. coming up on news 4, a montgomery county police officer is honored by congress for his bravery in the hostage standoff at discovery headquarters. also challenging the new

60 some degrees over the weekend. now snow today in the washington region. what's going on? >> well, there really wasn't very much of it. not enough to stick on the roadways. just a little more than a half inch. but it did make some people feel like winter is finally here. darcy spencer is in northwest d.c. to tell us more about this. >> reporter: hi. i don't know about you but i was ready for a little bit of snow. it had such a mild winter and was kind of nice being out and about today and seeing it come down. it's tapered off at this point but it was sort of nice while it lasted. i want to show you some video that we shot right around 1:00 this afternoon when we were in fairfax, virginia, doing an interview. the snow was coming down quite heavily and my photographer shot the video through the window of

the home and it was so beautiful coming down and the kids were getting really excited about going outside and playing in the snow. we moved locations. we're at 9th and e streets in northwest washington in the penn quarter neighborhood. it snowed here for the last several hours. it did not stick. the ground is still very warm. basically it was wet. a lot of people are now trying to make their way home. they didn't quite have the appropriate clothing with some folks pulling out umbrellas to shield them from the snow. pretty much people took it in stride. do you like it? we haven't had much snow. >> it's beautiful. i just hope it doesn't become a problem tomorrow. that's all. >> we've been having a lot of warm weather so it's about time. >> it's not bothering you one bit? >> not yet. not yet. i'm pretty good. i'm just not really like 16 inches, i'm good. >> reporter: all right. nothing like that. no accumulation. as i said before the snow basically stopped here within probably like the last half hour. no accumulation but the roads and sidewalks shall the entire

area is wet for folks making their way home tonight just be prepared for some wet roadways. reporting live from northwest washington, darcy spencer, news 4. back to you. >> thank you. the 2012 general assembly session begins in virginia this week. northern virginia educators are getting ready to renew their fight to get rifd the so-called kings dominion law that affects the start date for the school year and as julie carey reports there seems to be growing momentum for a change. since 1986 when the amusement park got legislation passed the kings dominion law has ruled when virginia school districts can open their doors. not until after labor day. the tourism industry says the delayed start is needed to keep teen employees on the job and to keep the visitors coming. but educators say the law that extends summer break has got to go. and today governor mcdonald announced he would make repeefl the measure part of his legislative agenda. state senator adam evan will sponsor one bill to give school districts the ability to set their own calendar.

>> it's time we had educators and school board members make education policy rather than amusement parks. >> reporter: slightly more than half of virginia school districts, though, get a wafer from the kings dominion law. most of them in southwest and western virginia. because of heavier snowfall and worries about making up snow days they get a pass and can set their own calendar. that puts virginia school districts out of sync with one another. northern virginia educators say even worse the post labor day start puts virginia high schoolers at a competitive disadvantage when it comes to preparation for national ap and ib exams. they have less time to study. in places like the alexandria city public schools with a high percentage of english language learners and economically disadvantaged students educators want the change to create more time for learning. >> we're all pushing for longer days and longer time. but not being allowed to start before labor day we are constrained. >> reporter: virginia's hospitality and travel association will push to keep the law issuing a statement saying a change in the law will have numerous effects including

jeopardizing an estimated $369 million including critical jobs and $104 million in wages and benefits. some parents support the change. >> it's an educational issue where the quality of education is concerned i think they should have top priority over business. >> reporter: other parents are reluctant to shorten their summer time with their kids. >> i just like having them home to be able to do stuff they want to do to have a little more time. >> reporter: in fairfax county, julie carey, news 4. if the law is changed, school districts probably wouldn't be able to start setting their own start dates until the 2013 school year. >> lawmakers in maryland will begin their legislative session on wednesday and two potentially controversial topics will be front and center. a bill legalizing same sex marriage will be reintroduced. last year that bill passed in the senate but was killed in the house. this year governor o'malley is expected to put his name on the measure. there could also be gas tax

increases to pay for transportation projects. the tax is currently 23.5 cents a gallon. it could go up to 38.5 cents a gallon. a montgomery county police officer has been given a congressional badge of bravery for his work during the hostage standoff at the discovery building. officer edward patton was off duty when the call came in about a suicide bomber going into the discovery building back in september of 2010. officer patton says he sped to the scene because he knew that building and the area well. he was the first officer in the building and within 100 feast t the -- feet of the gunman being able to gain access to the building. other employees recognized me. from there was able to get a tactical advantage coming up to the rear and seeing the subject with his apparatus and gear and being able to relay all that information. >> the s.w.a.t. team used that

vital information to catch the suspect. his name was james lee. he was eventually shot and killed by sharp shooters after hours of negotiations failed. some customers at the penn camera store say they were surprised when they learned they wouldn't be able to use gift cards. that comes less than a week after the company filed for bankruptcy. in a memo near the cash register penn camera tells customers it will no longer honor gift cards. the statement told customers to seek reimbursement from credit card companies through a disputed charge but late this afternoon the company reversed its policy to allow gift cards. >> it was a wonderful move that they decided to honor these gift cards and now i can, if they decide to stay in business and reorganize we'll absolutely come back to penn camera. >> penn camera has been in the washington area for nearly 60 years. five of the chain's eight locations have already closed. coming up we'll tell you one tough mama who is lucky to be alive after her bungee cord snapped.

some locations picking up 1 to 2 inches into portions of northern virginia and southern maryland. this is the way it looked across the region today as the flakes were flying. made for a very pretty picture outside and the good news was we have been so warm the streets haven't been a factor and really no problems out there on the roadways. but be careful overnight tonight because that snow may change over to some ice especially in some areas where we may see some melting. 32 right now manassas. 34 in washington. 34 in leesburg. so that temperature critical. we could see some frozen overpasses tonight. watch out for ice as you make your way out and about this evening and in toward tomorrow morning. the snow now moving out of here. you can see the last of the snow making its way across the chesapeake bay right now and we'll continue to move off toward the east. don't expect any more in the way of snow as we make our way through the rest of the night tonight. do expect however to have some problems on the roads if we get below the freezing mark. once again, take precautions as you make your way out and about.

both said they'd like to work out a new deal. the pro bowl in honolulu is scheduled for january 29th. you can see the game here on nbc 4 at 7:00. sunday's epic game in denver received the highest television ratings of any wild card playoff game since 1988. and broncos quarterback tim tebow was money. in fact he reportedly earned a $250,000 roster bonus for helping the broncos upset the steelers in overtime. for football fans, this game was priceless. ben roethlisberger and the steelers were nine-point favorites against tim tebow and the broncos. second quarter denver trailed 6-0. tebow goes up top in deep to eddie royal and the former westfield high standout makes an incredible catch. 30-yard touchdown. another look at this one. a couple looks at this because it is so impressive. great catch by royal. broncos would build a 20-6 lead at halftime. tebow is pumped.

great grab. four-yard touchdown. new york takes the 7-2 lead. same score at halftime. third quarter, falcons down 10-2. already stopped on fourth and one earlier in the game. they go for it again and again they get stuffed by the giants' defense. take another look at this. matt ryan gets no push and they turn it over on downs. pivotal. giants defensive coordinator perry fuel loving it. that play would prove costly for atlanta. three plays later manning finds knicks and hakeem does the rest. makes some moves here. wow. 72-yard touchdown for hakeem the dream. he finished with 115 yards receiving. two tds. manning threw for 277 yards, three touchdowns, no interceptions. new york defeats atlanta, 24-2. all right. here is a look at this weekend's schedule. on saturday the saints will face the 49ers in san francisco. in new england, broncos against the patriots, the pats beat the broncos, 41-23 in week 15.

the auto industry's big annual show is in high gear right now. the detroit auto show opened to the media today. auto makers are unveiling 40 new models. we have more on what consumers can expect. >> reporter: practical, affordable, good on gas. that's what car buyers are asking for. and auto makers are answering sparking strong sales for two years running. >> people come into my show room now because they want to buy a car. they're not coming in because there is a lot of incentive money on the car. you know it's not let's say the deal of the week anymore.
