salt and sand trucks already hitting the roads in northern virginia. >> with wet streets from dupont circle into maryland, a lot of people are thinking ahead to the morning. let's get straight to doug kammerer who begins our team coverage. i guess we're worried about ice, right? >> that's exactly what the worry is. snow coming through the area over the last 12 hours or so. many areas seeing snow pretty much all day. because of the warmer temperatures, we received 1.5 inches of snow. the attention now turns to the temperatures. down below freezing around manassas. also starting to see some fog across the area. that is also going to hamper some travel out there. be careful if you're traveling tonight or if you're traveling in towards tomorrow morning. there could be some areas of temperatures that are below normal during the morning tomorrow, at least below freeze.

fairlakes, virginia, got a little bit of snow. >> reporter: temperatures feel like they are already dropping. v-dot crews are expected to mobilize around midnight. they're going to keep a close eye on the roadways. a lot of folks in northern virginia were shocked to come home and see snow like this right here. they had to immediately go outside and already start planning for tomorrow morning's commute. >> it came at us like a blizzard. kind of crazy. >> reporter: kyle was surprised to see the crazy snow hit this evening. dropping a little over an inch in his neighborhood, he's shoveling it off his driveway. >> got to get back and forth to work. >> makes driving horrible. >> reporter: v-dot crews are already de-icing in case wet roads freeze over overnight.

they're keeping a close eye on bridges and an and aoff-ramps. >> i'm going slow. >> reporter: we talked to a lot of driver who is said they are going to fill up their tanks tomorrow because they're concerned about their morning commute. a lot of folks are going to remove the snow off their windshields so we can maneuver through the traffic and not have to worry about visibility. kyle brushed the snow off his car hoping the roads don't freeze overnight. >> i have to go back and forth to work and i have to go to school in the morning. >> reporter: good luck with that, kyle. v-dot crews recommend you give yourself plenty of time for tomorrow's commute, 45 minutes up to even an hour. back to you snt stin the studio >> thank you. a bad accident has killed at least one person and another person is in critical condition.

the three-car accident happened in the 900 block of eastern avenue. it's not yet clear if the wet streets played any role in this crash. in sterling, virginia, a woman was stabbed in a parking lot of a busy shopping center tonight. jackie bensen is at cedar lakes plaza with more. jackie? >> reporter: jim, we're told the woman is in her 30s. she was found on the ground in the parking lot here suffering from multiple stab wounds. now, we're told it happened about 7:30 tonight at this shopping center anchored by a grand mark supermarket. people were rushing from their cars into the stores and it's not clear if anyone witnessed the actual stabbing. >> she was in her vehicle. apparently it seems like she got out of the vehicle and some type of altercation allegedly occurred.

it seems like the stabbing resulted as a domestic altercation or it's domestic-related. >> reporter: late this evening, a loudoun county sheriff's deputy arrest add man in connection with the stabbing. that person has not been identified. we're told the victim remains hospitalized with li life-threatening injuries. back to you. >> jackie bensen reporting, thank you, jackie. the final countdown is on in new hampshire. voters in the granite state will go to the polls tomorrow to select their favorite republican candidate. tonight, the gop hopefuls made a final push for support. earlier in the day, this is what mitt romney's campaign headquarters in manchester, new hampshire, looked like as dozens of volunteers made calls to potential voters. now look at the headquarters for newt gingrich. you can see a much quieter scene there, the very telling panoramic views were put online by "the wall street journal." steve handelsman has our report.

director jack lou. people who live in ward 5 spoke out about a replacement for former council member harry thomas, jr. thomas resigned last week just before pleading guilty to stealing $350,000 in money intended for youth organizations. he was also convicted of tax evasion. at the wilson building earlier today, the name plate outside his office was removed. the door was locked. tonight residents gathered at a church in northeast d.c. to talk about the challenges faced in that ward. >> tonight is an opportunity for the ward 5 leadership and the ward 5 family to talk to each other about our current void in ward 5 d.c. council leadership. >> thomas will be sentenced in may. he's facing up to four years in prison. we're following a developing story out of west virginia. we just learned that three men

who disappeared in a greenbriar, west virginia, cave, are safely out of that cave. they had plans to spend the night in the cave but when they didn't come home, their parents called police. details about what happened are still coming in. but earlier in the day, authorities thought the men had probably gotten lost since that cave stretches for more than 13 miles. a police captain in fredericsburg, virginia, is an administrative leave after being arrested for having inappropriate contact with a teenage boy he met online. his name is brent taylor. he was arrested this weekend in stafford county after police picked up a 17-year-old walking along warrington road. police say the teenager told officers that taylor picked him up in fairfax county and took him to a hotel in stafford. taylor is in charge for detectives. a local family is outraged after the murder of a loved one over a pair of shoes,

apparently. police say 19-year-old david robinson was killed early sunday morning on foote street in northeast washington. he was killed over a pair of nikes that cost $200. robinson and his cousin were waiting at a bus stop when men in an suv pulled up, stole the shoes and started shooting. >> for him to die this way and for them just to take some tennis shoe that is they could have got themselves, i would rather for them to just beat him up and take the tennis shoes than to actually kill him. >> police say there's evidence that shots were also fired at the getaway car which could help in the investigation. a police officer from montgomery county was presented the congressional badge of bravery today. it was for his actions during the hostage standoff at the discovery channel headquarters in 2010. officer edward paydon was off duty when a man with explosives

was holding hostages in that building. he was one of the first officers on the scene. he got inside the building. from there, he was able to relay important information to officers and sharpshooters outside. >> stuff we've been rain training for for different scenarios and this, surprising enough, something similar to this that our department had trained for a week prior. everybody worked as a team. i think that was the big word throughout the whole event. >> s.w.a.t. team members shot and killed the suspected bomber, a man named james j. lee. nobody else was injured. a new study finds that wearing a nicotine patch might actually boost memory. researchers at vanderbilt medical center tested the patches on senior citizens suffering from mild cognitive impairment. nearly half of those wearing a patch saw memory improvement after six months. at the same time, those without a patch saw a decline. experts say the neck teen may

simply improve symptoms rather than help with the actual disease. a coalition of health groups released some new national guidelines today for sex education in public schools. it includes minimal recommendations for what students in each grade levels should know. by the end of second grade, for example, it says students should be able to name male and female anatomy and understand that all living things reproduce. and by fifth grade, students should understand sexual ori orientati orientation. this is one of the favorite weeks of the year for foodies in our area. d.c. restaurant week is under way, participating restaurants offer three course meals for $20 for lunch and $35 for dinner. but don't wait too long to make a reservation. many places are already booked up for friday and saturday nights. restaurant week ends on sunday. coming up, the plans to make summer shorter for some kids in the area. a woman pleads burglars to return priceless video of her

burglars hit the bethesda area of montgomery county recently and stole valuables from several houses. one woman, though, in particular is having a hard time with all those crimes. that's because the thieves inadvertently took some priceless video. jane watrel has our report. >> reporter: rainy foster shows the small desk drawer where she kept some of her late husband's personal effects. >> a draw where i kept bill's wallet. >> reporter: bill foster died two years ago this week in a small plane crash in connecticut. the former nasa rocket scientist and energy lobbyist was only 50 years old. >> he was really on the brink of something wonderful at the time of his death. i was very proud of him.

>> reporter: dealing with the loss of her soul mate has been difficult, but she said she was comforted by a short video she took of bill holding a family cat. >> i watched it all the time. i watched it all the time. because it was three days before his death. >> reporter: but the flip cam, similar to this one, containing the priceless video, was stolen from the desk drawer when burglars broke into their home in late december, stealing electronics, jewelry and other personal items. >> they at least could have taken the pouch but they left the pouch. it was adding insult to injury. >> reporter: rainy is working with police. three other homes were burglarized the same night. >> i just wondered if thieves have a heart. if there were anything or any way i could just get that footage back, i would be happy. >> reporter: rainy foster says she'll offer a cash reward to anyone who can help return the stolen flip cam.

a $50 item containing memories money can't buy. virginia's governor is leading a new push to get rid of the so-called kings dominion law and make summers shorter for students in the commonwealth. the law was enacted to help the state's tourism industry. but educators say the late start puts virginia students at a disadvantage when it comes to prepping for national exams. american indian groups native to maryland are now being formally recognized for the first time. today governor martin o'malley signed an executive order formally recognizing the two tribes. maryland has 58,000 residents who identify themselves as

having american indian heritage. lot excitement today about a little bit of snow. >> just a little bit. >> beautiful while it was falling. >> that's what everybody's saying. it really was beautiful. because temperatures. >> reporter: so warm prior, we didn't have any problems on the road waist. a lot of people taking pictures, a lot of people having some fun in that snow. this was the biggest snowfall of the season for many of us. that's not saying a whole lot, though, is it? inch and a half in some locations. that was about it. .6 inches at the airport. yes, that is the most that we have seen at the airport. many areas during that october snowstorm did see a lot more, well to the north and west of washington. you can see that storm system is out of here. and it continues to move on out. but look at all the snow that fell across the region. most of the areas well to the north and west that saw the snow, didn't see much from this storm. this one stayed around the washington, d.c. metro area and points off toward the east. right now, high and dry across the region.

that's how we're going to stay throughout the rest of the night. but we're going to be watching out for the potential for freezing roadways. snow totals, not a lot. .6 inches in washington. an inch in waldorf. culpepper an inch and a half. not a lot of snow. but enough to cover the ground in some spots. dealing with fog in some areas. manassas and culpepper coming in under a mile visibility. watch out in that area. you can still see some out here right now. high temperatures today, 40 degrees. that was earlier right before the snow started to fall. then we saw the temperatures dip down a little bit. as i mentioned, biggest snowfall of the season thus far. 34 in leesburg right now. this is the critical number. of course, 32 degrees. manassas at 32. 28 in culpepper. 28 in winchester. we could start to see some freezing here, especially on the overpasses first. so watch out into this area.

you notice easton at 32 degrees. be careful on the roads overnight and into early tomorrow morning. satellite/radar showing starting to see clearing skies. that could help with some fog across the region. but our storm system is now out of here. one storm system moves off. in behind it tomorrow, a beautiful day. all of our snow will be gone by about noon tomorrow. that's how much sunshine we'll see. here comes the next storm. this one's a big one. we could see 1 to 2 inches of rain with that storm on wednesday into early thursday. behind that on friday, we get cold again. the second arctic outbreak of the season will keep temperatures in the 30s. upper 20s to lower 30s in most locations. tomorrow afternoon, mostly sunny and nice, mild day. next few days, 51 on thursday. 37 on friday. 38 on saturday. we stay in the upper 30s coming up on sunday, too.
