rick santorum made a last minute move in iowa. will there be any surprises as voters hid to the polls in new hampshire? or will mitt romney clean up? good afternoon. >> the votes are finally being cast in the first primary of the 2012 presidential race. based on the latest polls 4r50eding up to the vote. mitt romney seemed sure to walk away with a win. >> much of the focus is on the second and third place finishers who will emerge as the top romney challengers. steve handlesman has the latest on this primary. soon we will know if any candidate has even a shot at stopping mitt romney. across new hampshire, republicans voted their choices, who they want to take on the president in the fall.

riders. >> it's ridiculous. i already spend over $10 a day. >> i'm already paying between the parking at metro, the metro coming in, it's like $15 a day. and parking at my building is $18 a day. >> reporter: metro is facing a $116 million budget shortfall. general manager says a 5% hike in fares in needed to help cover costs. maintenance work has been deferred for too long, and rebuilding metro into a more reliable system requires more money. >> after years of not investing in the system, we have to make those investments and this is what this budget allows us to do. >> riders have become increasingly frustrated with metro service. there have been cracked rails and ongoing escalator problems. the money raised by a fare increase will not help with those 3r0bs. it will just keep the system running. annoyed riders say they shouldn't pay more, until metro

becomes more reliable. >> it's high enough as it is. and the service is really bad. >> every day there's a problem on the train. nothing works. their elevators are down, the escalators are down, the trains are slow, and people are mad. >> the same escalator they spent six months fixing is now broken again. it takes about 15 minutes to get out of the station. i don't understand why it takes so long. >> the fare increases would have to be approved by metro's board. before that could happen, there would have to be a series of public hearings. those hikes would take effect july 1st. from dupont circle, megan mcgrath, news 4. on wall street, stocks ended with a modest gains as investors continued a positive tone for the euro scene debt crisis. the the nasdaq picked up 25, and the s&p 500 ended 11 points higher. the results of your next

google search could be much more personal. google says it's now sifting through photos, commentaries and other postings on its new social net working site google plus. the goal is to create search results that better fit the interest of the person con dw t ductsing the search. going emplus was introduced six months ago to compete with facebook and twitter. a prince william county high school had something to celebrate. the marching band from battlefield high won a kpe taking and got a chanlce to perform during half time. the hybrid is about to get a little more affordable for the younger driver. earlier today, toyota unveiled its new prius c, a smaller, cheaper version of the original prius hybrid. it will cost around $19,000 to start with. that's about $4,000 less than what the prius sells for now.

it's expected to get 53 miles per gallon in the city, 46 on the highway. the car was announced at the north america auto show in detroit. the deaths of nearly a dozen people at an air show are prompting a review of the rules. >> it happened last september when a world war ii plane crashed during an air show in reno, nevada. >> today the ntsb is trying to determine if the rules need to be changed. brian mooar has the story. >> reporter: the september crash that killed 11 people and injured dozen at the reno air races has federal regulators in washington taking a hard look at an industry built around death defying stunts. >> i do think there is an inherent level of risk. in fact, that danger is, i think, part of the attraction at these air shows and aerations. >> they also saw three fatal crashes in four days back in

there is so much snow in alaska now, towns are buried. crews from the national guard are removing the 18 feet of snow that fell in the town of cordova. at least three buildings have

collapsed beneath the weight of wet snow. the fishing town in southeastern alaska is only accessible now by boat or plane. >> that's epic snowfall. and can you believe it, they're getting more snow now. and they could get another one to two feet on top of that with wind. >> it's going to be a long winter there. >> normally for the season they get 100 inches, they have 138 already. the season long from over. valdez alaska, 290 inches of snowfall so far. i can't even fathom living there. get me out of here. >> they know how to deal with it. >> exactly. >> we've got some 15% of the u.s. now covered with snow compared to 60% last year, of course, a lot of that 15% of the u.s. that's covered is in alaska. we have sunshine out there right

now, guess what, tomorrow this time we're talking about some very nasty weather moving through the area. not just rain, but some bouts of moderate and heavy rain through the area. in the 50s, 52 frederick maryland. mt. airy, 52 to 54 degrees currently. down south, fredericksburg, virginia, stafford. our temperatures going to be falling off by 11:00 p.m. we pick up a few clouds by tomorrow morning. 35 to 34 degrees at 5:00 and 7:00 a.m. clouds on the increase, a dry morning is what we're going to have. the rain develops tomorrow. the radar is dry, quiet. look at all the rain down south. can you see that area of low pressure spinning here, we have another area of low pressure too. a double barrel low that's going to be coming through our area wednesday and thursday. another at the end of the week

welcome back to news 4 at 4:00. i'm barbara harrison. >> here's what's happening in the news at this hour. the first presidential primary of 2012 is now underway in new hampshire. if the polls are correct, mitt romney will walk away with his second win. and the real suspense lies in the race for second place here. riding metro may cost you more. the transit agency unveiled a new budget proposal. there will be a public hearing to discuss the proposed increases in february and march.

metro's board will have to approve any changes by july. >> the fda says it will clarify, but not make any significant changes to safety rules at air shows. 11 people were killed and 70 injured when a world war ii plane crashed at an air show in reno. the ntsb held a hearing to determine how safe air shows are. stocks closed higher on wall street. the dow jones industrials picked up 69 points. the nasdaq was up 25 points, and the s&p 500 closed 11 points higher. well, beyonce and jay-z may be singing a new love song about their baby girl. not everyone is so happy with the way she was brought into the world. >> wee onsay was brought into the hospital last night. ♪ the most amazing feeling i

the seventh season. snoop dog is facing charges for marijuana possession. the rapper was arrested after officers found marijuana cigarettes on his tour bus. he was released after telling officers the drugs were his. something may be bugging kim kardashian. perhaps it's the actor replacing her in the new skechers super bowl ad. kardashian was featured in her first super bowl ad for skechers shapeup shoes last year. but this year she's being replaced by a french bulldog. the move comes two months after she filed for divorce. the negative public relations surrounding her divorce has nothing to do with its decision. the national opera in washington announced an ambitious five-year plan. it includes a commitment to stage all four episodes of the

american ring in 2016. it's a cycle of operas by richard wagner. they began developing the program a few years ago but the funding ran short. they plan to present holiday open raz each year, and a commission program will be created so young composers will have an opportunity to develop new operas. the supreme court heard oral arguments sparked by an episode of nypd blue. they find abc for showing a woman's nude buttocs in 2003. the rules are vague and impose stricter standards on broadcast programming than on cable. some justices indicated they were troubled by inconsistent standards that allowed certain words and displays in some contexts but not others.

popular title. an album hasn't sold that many titles in one year since 2004. adele's retro sound and michael buble's christmas album appealed to younger and older audiences, who were more likely to buy cd's. that helped stemmed cd's rise. cd's also benefited for some deep discounting. one big surprise, vinyl is back in style. last year more vinyl albums sold than any other year since 1991. and when soundscan began tracking data. will 2012 keep up these gains? that depends whether labels can break the next adele and for established stars to keep on performing. this year we'll see new releases from 50 cent, youtube, madonna, pearl jam and bruce springsteen. coming up on news 4 at 4:00.

how much space do you need to live? a couple in colorado decided to take downsizing to the extreme. they built a home that is just 129 square feet. it cost them about $25,000 to build. most of the energy is solar. the bedroom is a lost. it's short on space, so they got creative putting hidden storage just about everywhere they could think of. it also has wheels in case they have to pick up and move. ice city, a temporary town in moscow.
