the nice temperatures in the 60s but you know what? get ready for another shock to your system. good afternoon. >> it's going to get so cold overnight we could see freezing on the roads tomorrow. >> storm 4 meteorologist veronica johnson has the news starting out in the storm center. >> we've been looking at the forecast really hard for the overnight period. today walking around with short sleeves on. so nice outside feeling like a real mild spring day across the area. 57 degrees the temperature. the wind out of the south at 7 miles per hour. tomorrow, tomorrow, folks, get ready for a big drop in the mercury. let's go ahead and take a look because winter is going to be moving into the area. we have 60 degrees in rockville, maryland, college park 59. 57 degrees in d.c. currently. all through the area we're seeing some very mild air. 63 in warrenton right now. so the deal is for the overnight

for the overnight at least prior to midnight here, mild temperatures, very nice conditions with just increasing clouds. it's after midnight, though, that rain is going to be moving in with a very, very strong cold front. and that rain right now the leading edge of it is just back off to the west. you can see some of the first showers coming through. areas of west virginia now and ohio and kentucky. take a look at the fast forecast because the cold air is some snow there and that's what we're talking about. precip change over and icy roads in spots mainly to the north. so rapid temperature drop for late tonight. a burst of snow that could be slick on some area roadways. and then strong winds, cold, and the return to january comes our way by tomorrow morning. wait until you see how low the wind chill temperatures are going to go for tomorrow. back to you guys. >> all right. thanks, veronica. >> the same system that brought us rain last night did much more damage in north carolina. strong storms and tornado blew through the western part of the

state last night. 15 people were injured, more than 60 buildings destroyed or damaged around burke county. now to the controversy surrounding a video that appears to show four u.s. marines desecrating the corpses of three enemy fighters. this video is too ugly for us to show you in full. >> but the unedited version is already going viral and is sabotaging u.s. peace efforts. steve handelsman has the story. >> reporter: the video is all over youtube. u.s. marines standing over what appears to be dead afghans urinating on the corpses. >> condemning the deplorable behavior. >> reporter: secretary of state clinton sounded furious. >> it is absolutely inconsistent with american values, with the standards of behavior that we expect from our military personnel. >> reporter: defense secretary panetta ordered an investigation.

tonight officials say they know who is in the video, marines from camp lejeune, north carolina who returned from deployment last fall. but it's more than just these four. who held the camera? even snap shots of corpses are banned. it looks like a marine unit with poor discipline and leadership. >> there may be officers and ncos other than these here who are going to be held responsible. >> reporter: like the abu ghraib photos that turned many iraqis against america the timing of the afghan video is terrible. u.s. forces and diplomats are stepping up efforts to cut a peace deal with moderate taliban. >> and our role in this is to build confidence building measures. >> reporter: not to shoot videos that insult afghans. >> deplorable, reprehensible. and unacceptable. >> reporter: but the story today is on afghan newscasts. the taliban says it proves americans are wild and inhumane. afghan president karzai called the video insane, knowing the

damage it's doing. many here in the nation's capital agree. i'm steve handelsman, news 4. a series of shootings in southeast washington this morning sent a school in lockdown. they happened near the martin luther king elementary school. authorities responded to the gun fire in the 600 block of alabama avenue. the 3300 block of 4th street and the 800 block of wheeler drive. d.c. police tell us three juveniles were shot. one of them was unconscious and taken to the hospital. the other two injuries are believed to be nonlife threatening. police are talking to two people tonight about the shooting but are not yet calling them suspects. the school was thrown into a lockdown but no one from the school was involved in the incident. part of alabama avenue was closed this morning during the investigation. sentencing is set for tomorrow for joran van der sloot for the murder of 21-year-old stephanie flores in peru. prosecutors are seeking a

30-year sentence for the dutch native after he pleaded guilty yesterday. van der sloot is also the prime suspect in the disappearance of american teen natalee holloway. meanwhile today in alabama a judge says he'll sign an order declaring holloway dead since her body was never found. now to decision 2012 and the republican race for the white house. fresh off a convincing win in new hampshire, mitt romney is now looking to capture another primary state -- south carolina. but this next battle could be a tougher one for the current front-runner. a new state poll there shows romney almost tied with newt gingrich for first place. jay gray reports. >> reporter: the focus and fight for the republican presidential nomination has taken a turn to the south. >> one of the reasons we're here in south carolina is because we don't quit. we got the heart of a warrior. >> reporter: if the gop race is a war, this conservative state

could potentially be the final battle ground for contenders like rick perry and newt gingrich. >> i think when you have crony capitalism with politicians taking care of their friends, that's not free enterprise. that's just back door socialism. >> reporter: gingrich and others attacking front-runner mitt romney for his time as head of bain capital labeling him a corporate shark who preyed on struggling businesses only concerned about short-term profits. >> are you attacking bain or just asking questions? >> i'm just asking questions. i'm shocked at how defensive they are. >> reporter: but romney has countered, saying he created more than 100,000 jobs during his tenure in the private sector. >> newt gingrich's attacks are called foolish, out of bounds, and disgusting. >> reporter: his campaign fighting the allegations on the airwaves. while in person romney is talking more and more like a presumptive nominee and targeting president obama. >> he was going to bring people together. he was going to get the economy going. and almost every front he's failed. >> reporter: less than two weeks

remained cautious over several weak economic reports. the dow-jones industrials gained 21 points and the nasdaq picked up nearly 14 and the s&p 500 closed about three points higher. >> so who are better drivers, men or women? a new study set out to find the answer. melissa has more on the results. we've all heard the jokes women are bad drivers but women are actually getting the last laugh here. a new study from four auto insurance says women are in fact the better, safer drivers. take a look here. now the study compared traffic violations, accidents, and insurance price statistics between men and women. take a look at the men here right now. 80% of male drivers cause all deadly or serious accidents. men are also three times more likely to get a traffic violation than women. that includes speeding tickets, reckless driving, as well as duis. taking a look at the map here, men are paying for their bad driving habits literally.

is this nice outside and this mild outside. but you will want to pay attention to the forecast because in a 12-hour period, actually it's more like a six-hour period, what happens to this area, temperatures will really fall. that's really after midnight in that time between midnight and 5:00 a.m. talking about wind chills that could be in the 20s even early tomorrow morning. >> whoa. >> 60 today. >> serious drop. >> serious drop. so okay. pull the coat out. i know you've been walking around with a light jacket today. i've been walking around without a jacket today. as we head outside the temperature is 57 degrees and nice, mild wind out of the south at 7 miles per hour. we didn't get much wind across the area as of yet but i do think that wind will start picking up as the next front gets a little closer to us. that front is an arctic front so the cold air is going to come rushing in and rushing in fast. we have numbers in the 50s and low 60s through the area. manassas, culpepper, fredericksburg in the low 60s. 46 the cool spot in cumberland,

maryland. speaking of cool how about we take it down a couple notches? cold. cincinnati at 34 degrees. 27 at chicago. 18 in st. louis, missouri. 17 degrees currently in omaha, nebraska. so that's a lot of cold air behind that arctic front. that's going to come through the area by tomorrow morning. that's where we'll be sitting this weekend with the arctic air over us. the leading edge of the weather front you can see the showers coming through west virginia right now. then snow back to where the colder air is. so as all this change takes place across the area early tomorrow morning, in the predawn hours, i do think it may get a little icy talking about some flurries, some light snow. i-70, i-81. those are the areas i would be most concerned with where it could be a little slick in this time around 5:00 and 6:00 and 7:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. our temperatures are in the low 50s for a good part of the night but then that change takes place and tomorrow morning 38 to 33 degrees. especially when that precip ends. 33 degrees with a very gusty

welcome back at 4:30 everybody. >> two people are being questioned after a series of shootings near an elementary school in southeast washington today. three teens were shot in three locations near the martin luther king jr. elementary school. the school went into lockdown during the incident. one of the victims was taken to a hospital. >> defense secretary leon panetta condemned video that appears to show four u.s. marines urinating on the corpses of three dead militants. panetta told afghan president hamid karzai there would be an immediate investigation and anyone involved would be held accountable. the white house characterized the behavior in the video as deplorable, reprehensible, and unacceptable. >> republican presidential candidates are in south carolina today campaigning ahead of the state's primary next week. a new state poll out today shows a tight race for first place between mitt romney and newt gingrich. rick santorum and ron paul were running neck and neck for third place. south carolina voters head to the polls january 21st.

on wall street stocks made minor gains as investors received several weak economic reports today. the dow was up just 21 points. the nasdaq picking up 13 and the s&p 500 closed three points higher. she has been a doctor, an astronaut, and a career woman. now there's a push to make barbie a cancer patient. >> two friends affected by the disease have begun a social media movement to help children dealing with cancer. erika edwards reports. >> reporter: she is more than just a staple on toy store shelves. barbie is an icon. her constantly changing look as reflected american history and the evolving role of women in society. now a movement on facebook is calling for barbie's next look to be bald. >> there is nothing that really speaks to kids who are going through cancer. >> reporter: a new jersey mother battling cancer and a california mom whose daughter has leukemia started the facebook page before christmas and hoped for a couple thousand hits by new year's.

what they got was thousands more than expected and an outpouring of support. >> it would be a nice representation and acknowledgment of a group of children who are so courageous and brave and manage with the debilitating effects of chemotherapy. >> experts say the doll could help children who don't have the disease but have family members who do. >> when eric was first diagnosed the very first question out of both of my son and daughter and one is 12 and one is 10 1/2, will daddy lose his hair? >> trish moore is the founder of rohr rock stars a nonprofit that supports the educational needs of children facing cancer. inspired by her husband's battle with the disease her work with kids who have cancer has shed new light on what it means to be bald. it's not the disease. it's the attempt to fight it. >> it's our body's sign that we're fighting it, that we're launching this battle. so i think using toys to convey that message is really powerful. >> mattel hasn't yet responded to the facebook request but the

>> i think for me it was. i seen a beautiful girl in jess. i knew once she got through her weight issues and things she was going to see how beautiful she was as well. you know, for me, i just thought like it wasn't an opportunity to find love. it was just something that happened. i mean, i cried in front of her althe time so it was like, you know? >> was it love at first sight for you? >> you know what? it was. as much as i wasn't looking for it and i was very against anything like that, his personality just poked through the exterior and it was something that caught me from day one. >> wow. >> it was just something we built upon. >> you have a lot of fans here. we don't have to tell you you'll be in our health and fitness expo this weekend. did either of you have any health issues associated with your heavy before? >> we did. ramone was a typical patient. >> yeah. i didn't go to the doctor since college probably for seven years and, you know, when i was on the show i found out from the doctor i had diabetes and i had severe

those rches today just fine so in terms of slick spots i think it will be way up north around i-70, i-81, 270, areas further in frederick county, carroll county, where it could be a little slick for a brief period early tomorrow morning. cold air, big story too. in terms of the icy conditions you can see it here. areas up into pennsylvania if you got plans to drive there, that's where i think it'll be more problematic especially in western pennsylvania especially in areas of northern west virginia. wind chill temperatures in the 50s tonight of course and then this is 6:30 tomorrow morning. 24 degrees the wind chill temperature. gaithersburg. 32 into d.c. most areas are going to hang out in the 20s for wind chill temperatures tomorrow. so we go of course from around 60 today to very, very cold and in the 20s for tomorrow. those wind chills. 31 to 34 with a gusty wind even tomorrow morning at 25 to 30 miles per hour by the afternoon. your high upper 30s to low 40s

an oregon animal shelter hopes to find a new home for walter whose more than 23 pounds and 18 inches long. he arrived in portland last week. officials say the domestic short hair cat is loving and a mild-mannered cat but needs to find an owner that will help him shed a few pounds. so far there have been no takers but the shelter is sweetening the deal with a free bag of lo-calorie food and a laser pointer for play time. >> been eating a lot of mice. >> yeah. the world's fastest land animal was stopped in its tracks at europe's busiest airport. isaac, an endangered african cheetah, was seized at heathrow airport because he was missing an identity marker used to fight illegal animal trade. isaac was enroute to russia from a south african safari park. it's unclear whether the missing microchip was in error or if there were other reasons for that. >> when we come right back on

newly released court documents are giving us insight into the mind of casey anthony.

the florida mother was cleared of charges that she killed her 2-year-old daughter caylee last july. >> we the jury find the defendant not guilty. >> reporter: seven months after the not guilty verdict stunning new details about what casey anthony told mental health experts before the trial. a judge in orlando has unsealed the depositions of psychiatrist jeffrey danziger and psychologist william white, two medical professionals who evaluated anthony. according to whites she talked about her father george saying it is the perception of casey that her father had something to do with the death of her daughter. dr. danziger says casey told him i think he held her under water. maybe he was doing something to her and he tried to cover it up. anthony also recounted her younger years. weitz says anthony told him her father sexually abused her back to the age of childhood. >> have you ever sexually

molested your daughter casey anthony? >> no, sir. >> reporter: george anthony denied those allegations during the trial and defense attorneys never presented evidence to support the claim. on wednesday george anthony's lawyer told nbc news as he has repeatedly said, he never molested any member of his family including casey anthony, and he had nothing to do with the death of caylee marie anthony. the depositions are the latest version of what casey says happened to her daughter in 2008. >> there is no doubt that casey anthony by her own accounts is an admitted liar. so it becomes virtually impossible to know which of the accusations she's made or which of the explanations she gave had any truth at all. >> reporter: casey also told danziger and weitz about her personal life saying caylee may have been conceived during a date rape in the fall of 2004. anthony told weitz she attended a party when 18 and blacked out

possibly from a spiked drink. she believes that's when she was impregnated. as for her mental state, dr. danziger said i did not find any evidence of an active mental illness. and that anthony was surprisingly cheerful for someone accused of murdering her child. weitz says anthony seemed detached from a lot of her feelings and emotions and uses lies as a protective measure. the perception of her is really damaged. she lies about so much so i think nobody actually will know what to believe and what not to believe. that's news 4 at 4:00. news 4 at 5:00 starts right now. tonight on news 4 at 5:00 a barrage of gun fire right outside a d.c. elementary school. three teenagers shot, city
