is. it has now brought law enforcement from another county into this investigation. now prince george's county police say a description of the suspect is very similar to the man caught by a cvs security camera using the debit card of the victim from tuesday's home invasion in bethesda. in that case a woman who does house keeping was approached by an armed man as she walked from her car into a house on barden road about 6:55 a.m. the home's two occupants were tied up. the housekeeper was sexually assaulted. hours later police conducted a tour robbery in wheaton, maryland. it happened monday morning. a woman was robbed at gun point in her garage in that case. investigators say today's incident in temple hills occurred in a manner very similar to the bethesda home invasion. earlier this morning the victim was outside warming up her vehicle when she saw a suspicious person. being concerned about that she went back inside her home but
6:01 pm
the suspect followed her into the home as well. inside the home there were other occupants at which time the suspect tied up all the other occupants and subsequently sexually assaulted the victim. >> reporter: in each of the two earlier cases the victim's car was stolen. that is exactly what happened again here today. the suspect took the victim's car described as a white, 2008 honda civic with maryland license plates, 6 ae 9788. again, as i said, now a second county brought into this investigation home invasions, sexual assaults. back to you. >> thanks. a setback for republican candidates fighting to get on virginia's primary ballot. they lost their challenge in court today. a judge told them they had a point but then admonished them for waiting too long to do something about it. julie carey reports from richmond. >> reporter: the judge's ruling means virginia voters will see the names of just two gop
6:02 pm
presidential candidates on the ballot when absentee voting starts next week. mitt romney and ron paul were the only two presidential hopefuls who collected the 10,000 validated signatures required by virginia law. lawyers for rick perry, newt gingrich, jon huntsman and rick santorum asked to be added to the ballot. they challenged virginia's law as unconstitutional and an abridgement of free speech because it only allows in state residents to circulate petitions. turning down their bid, the judge told them he agreed with their argument but that they waited too long to make their case. he said you played the game, you lost, and then complained about the rules. >> americans deserve the right to talk to americans about who is going to be their president. and the judge held that. i'm disappointed that he decided the case on an -- a very limited legal technicality. >> reporter: the state board of election officials say they are relieved they won't have to scramble to reprint absentee ballots. >> the judge basically
6:03 pm
determined that the election will go on as planned. as chairman of the state board of elections we are somewhat relieved because of the inconvenience that would have been caused by a different ruling. >> reporter: republican party officials say they are glad the judge also found the 10,000 signature requirement isn't too great a burden to place on presidential hopefuls. >> we would have loved to have had all the candidates on the ballot but, unfortunately, only two of them qualified for the ballot and the judge clearly said that our 10,000 votes or 10,000 signature requirement was not onerous. >> reporter: governor perry's attorney says they have not yet made a decision about whether to appeal the judge's ruling. if they do they'll have to act fast. absentee voting starts in virginia next friday. in richmond, virginia, julie carey, news 4. >> perry's attorney tells news 4 he will talk to the candidates right away to make a decision about an appeal. the next primary for the republican presidential race
6:04 pm
will be in south carolina. there is a new poll by the american research group that suggests it could be close there. 29% of likely gop voters in the state say they're backing mitt romney. 25% support newt gingrich. ron paul got 20%. 7% of the voters were undecided. that's something rick santorum is counting on. >> this race is just beginning. south carolina can completely change the tenor of this race. >> reporter: south carolina voters will go to the polls a week from tomorrow. it's the first southern state to vote in the race for the republican presidential nomination. the florida primary comes ten days later. the trial of former presidential candidate john edwards is being delayed because he's reportedly suffering from a life threatening heart condition. during a hearing today the judge said she received two letters from a cardiologist. he states that edwards needs surgery next month. the trial was delayed until
6:05 pm
march. it was tentatively scheduled to begin this month. edwards is accused of using nearly a million dollars in campaign donations to cover up an affair and a child that he fathered out of wedlock. a teenager from laurel, maryland received three life sentences today for a murder at the cheltonham youth facility and several other crimes that date back in 2009. this is the latest chapter in this complicated and troubling crime spree that occurred in prince george's county. >> reporter: 15-year-old brian watson will be 57 years old before he is eligible for parole and if he serves his full sentence he'll be 100 when he gets out and still have to register as a sex offender. this after pleading guilty to the murder and attempted rape of 65-year-old hannah wheeling an instructor at the youth facility. >> it is a tremendous tragedy. there is no answer for why a 13-year-old boy is capable, would be capable of killing and raping in the manner that he
6:06 pm
did. >>eporter: he committed the brutal crime because of a string of burglaries he committed. during the course of the investigation in the murder at cheltonham the dna evidence revealed he was responsible for much more than burglaries in the apartment complex where he lived. he had climbed a neighbor's third floor balcony, entered her apartment, and stabbed her while she was asleep. dna from wheeling's murder matched that found on a knife used in the attack on hannah peppera which until that match remained an unsolved case. he was 13 at the time. peppera wrote a letter to the court and to watson telling him she forgave him for her own sake but was glad he was off the street. judge tony clark in accepting the guilty plea and passing sentence told watson he wasn't fit to live in this society. that he didn't know the rules and that he didn't seem to care. that admonition elicited no response from the youth. >> today in court that was a young man who was, did not exhibit an awful lot of remorse for human life.
6:07 pm
i think the brutality of the crime really speaks for itself. a body found wrapped in plastic near a dumpster in capital heights, maryland, and police are tonight trying to identify the victim and figure out why they were killed. the maintenance worker made the discovery about 8:00 this morning on doewood lane. authorities say the cause of death is a mystery but they are investigating the case as a murder. they say there was trauma to the body. police say the victim may have been in his early 30s. d.c. mayor vincent gray is demanding that the occupy d.c. protesters be cleared out of mcpherson square. he is citing poor living conditions and an increase in the rat population there. mayor gray sent a strongly worded letter to the national park service asking for the protesters' removal. the mayor wants the protesters relocated to the freedom plaza protest. gray also says improper disposal of trash and human waste is posing a health risk to

6:10 pm
only added to today's cold snap. >> you can feel it pressing you. >> reporter: this runner says at times it was more than a challenge. >> it makes it a lot harder to breathe. >> reporter: power companies like pepco expected heavy winds to cause major power outages and gave notice saying they, quote, are ready to respond with extra crews into the evening shift at the appropriate level. however, pepco says they have only had 18 outages in d.c. and maryland. nobek has reported 12. now of course if we should have any kind of power outages you want to call your electric company as soon as possible. it's definitely going to be a cold weekend so maybe it's better to stay indoors. i have an idea. why don't you come out to the nbc health and fitness expo. we're all going to be out there. i'll be out there tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m. showing off zumba moves for the big launch but it is going to be a great weekend. stay indoors. stay with us at nbc health and
