the crew from using life boats. local crew and helicopters were called in to rescue the more than 4,000 on board. there were reports some passengers jumped into the cold water and tried to swim ashore. it had just set out for an eight day cruise when the accident happened and they're trying to determine exactly what the ship hit. >> my goodness? scary stuff. >> talking about the weather, though, the winds upon us. >> did you notice? the change of season is finally here. >> i was in atlanta a couple days and we were under a wind advisory the whole time and it wasn't any better. >> did you say anything to my parents while you were there? >> yes. >> mom didn't say anything about it. >> she wants you to call her more. >> no doubt. >> temperatures are below the freezing mark in many neighborhoods. 28 at national airport and the

well as tacoma and forest glynn and should be on schedule by tuesday. moving on, leaders from the three jurisdictions that run metro agreed to meet annually to review the transit's performance. d.c. mayor vincent grey hosted the governor and mayor yesterday. the three signed a memorandum that calls on them to meet every year. each said safety is a priority. >> i'd much rather pay a few nickels more per ride than have to worry about my wife or daughter being one of the fatalities in an accident. >> the good news over this last year, no fatalities. injuries are down significantly, violent crime in and around the metro area is down 19%. >> the mayor and two governors

also said metro's board appears to be functioning well and did not need to make changes. one of the boards around the king memorial may soon change as crowds come to see it this weekend. ken salazar gave the park 30 y days on a controversial quote that read, i was a drum major for justice peace and righteousness. many thought the paraphrased quote made dr. king sound conceited. the original quote reads, if you want to say i was a drum major, say that i was a drum major for justice. say that i was a drum major for peace. i was a drum major for righteousness and all of the other shallow things will not matter. the national park service will work with the king memorial foundation and king family to find a solution. right now, d.c. and howard

university police are looking for a missing student. they are searching for ar irian carr, a freshman from california. the flew back to d.c. after visiting campus on oakland. family members have not been able to contact her. friends passed out flyers around campus last night. if you have any information on her whereabouts, call police. police are investigating a string of home invasions in maryland. so far, case is in wheaton, bethesda and temple hills. it started tuesday when someone broke into the garage of a wheaton townhouse. police contacted that case to the home invasion of bethesda. their investigation says an intru intruder terrorized a woman, teenaged son and sexually assaulted a housekeeper. they got a picture of a man who got a credit card stolen from the home. in temple hills yesterday, police say a man broke into a house on berkeley street,

sexually assaulted a woman and stole her car. officers recovered her honda civic several hours later. a prince georges county teen will spend the rest of his life in prison after pleading guilty to a series of crimes including murder. the 15-year-old was sentenced to 75 years in prison after attacking wheeling, a teacher at a youth facility where he was placed after a series of robberies. dna also reveals he scaled the neighbor's three story balcony and stabbed her in her sleep. >> those who rape and kill in our community are not fit to live among us. >> today in court, that was a young man who did not exhibit a lot of remorse for human life. >> he will be eligible for parole after serving half his

sentence but authorities say he would need extensive psychiatric treatment before he could return to society. >> the prime suspect in the disappearance of natalee holloway in aruba is now serving a prison sentence for another woman in peru. a panel of judges sentenced joran van der sloot to 28 years behind bars. he pleaded guilty to the death of stephany flores. he's accused of trying to sell information about holloway's disappearance to her parents. peruvian law allows them to serve a third of their sentence and could be released in eight or nine years. a scandal about d.c. counsel james thomas, failing to report thomas' theft and he worked with marshall banks who plead guilty

yesterday, banks is the president and founder of a non-profit group prosecutors say helped filter more than $350,000 in government funds to thomas. the former council member pleaded guilty last week and could face nearly four years in prison. the marine corps has appointed a three star general to decide what if any punishment will be imposed on four marine snipers involved in a controversial video. they appear to be urinating on dead bodies of taliban members in afghanistan. at this point, no one has been charged. the marine corps will conduct an internal investigation in addition to a criminal probe already under way by the naval criminal investigative services. organizers of a military job fair say they're on a mission to get more spouses employed. >> this was the nation's first military spouse career forum and hiring fair. employers filled the washington convention center and catered to wives and husbands of those who

occurred as the pilgrims were making their way to a shiite shrine. this is the latest in a series of attack during shiite religious observance, the bombs raise new fears of a new clash between shiites and sunnis and that could destabilize iraq now that u.s. troops are gone. former mississippi governor, haley barbour says he's comfortable with his decision to pardon more than 200 inmates in his last days in office and did not include two sisters released last year. jamie and gladys scott served nearly 16 years of life sentences for armed robbery. last year, he freed them based on the condition gladys donate a kidney. he said they did nothing for a full pardon and the pardon included five convicted murderers and caused and uproar and anger and barbour says he has absolute confidence.

inside a local store, one of the dogs died. that happened at the petsmart in po to potomac yard in alexandra. the owners of two daush haunted and one had to have stitches and the other was euthanized. president bush took his dog, bo, there just two days earlier. the owner said pet part policies and procedures were not followed and we take this policy seriously and those associated with this are no longer with petsmart. a string of church burglaries in stafford county, bryan stevens is facing grand larceny charges. he broke into ebenezer can't church, raymond baptist church and church of christ.

he stole tvs and l along with $29,000 in gift cards. he was found living in a shed in a vacant home. let's face it. if you drive in d.c., you've probably gotten a parking ticket or two or three or four. some people owe thousands of dollars in unpaid and overdue parking tickets. if you're one of them, you better pay those tickets now because the district's parking amnesty program is about to expire. >> reporter: d.c. writes millions of parking tickets for millions of dollars every year. a lot of them don't get paid even though they double in penalty after a few weeks. many people don't like the city's aggressiveness. >> i'm not too happy about the parking ticket situation. >> now serving b-268 at window number 4. >> reporter: now, a six month amnesty program in which you pay the face value of any ticket written before january 2010 but

not any penalties is ending in two weeks, january 27th. some are rushing to pay thousands in back tickets. how much did you owe in tickets? >> about 3,000 and change. >> reporter: the d krrc dmv ale a collection agency. >> they sent ought 8,000 notices to individuals alerting them they have tickets with a collection agency eligible for ticket amnesty. >> reporter: it's a lot of money involved. $233 million without the added penalties. suburban d.c. drivers owe the most. maryland, $1.7 million outstanding tickets worth $88 million to the city. virginia, 1.1 million tickets worth $53 million to the city. d.c. motorists, 795 million tickets worth $40 million. all other jurisdictions come wined to account for another million tickets, valued at $51 million. amnesty would help. >> it allows for all tickets

people fell in line and caused some to surge and there was a stampede and others were crushed to death. at least four people were taken to a local hospital. prison investigators have discovered a tunnel chis sampled by four inmates in an escape attempt. it was just six feet from reaching the desert outside the walls. as many as 250 of the 1800 inmates could have escaped if the tunnel was completed. this ak-47 assault rifle was also found inside the tunnel. they estimated it took two to three years to carve the tunnel with chisels and sledgehammer. actress heather locklear is out of the hospital this morning. she was rushed to the hospital thursday for an unknown ailment. while there, doctors said she was in intensive care. locklear has been hospitalized several times over the last few years. in 2009, she was arrested for suspicion of driving under the

start this morning, not much of wind blowing event, but temperatures climbing in the mid-30s, windchills stay in the mid to upper 20s. here's your saturday planner, temperatures jest barely above the freezing mark by 10:00 a.m. mid-30s this afternoon, in and out of clouds and sunshine and not much in the way of precip here. snow showers in parts of southwestern bigger and pennsylvania. not much in the way of organized snowfall, a few passing snowflakes. for us east of the mountain, expect plenty of sunshine, we will expect some cloud cover but won't generate precipitation. dry for your weekend and cold as well. cold indeed, the first time we had chilly windchill and skies will clear out today and early tomorrow. expect temperatures in low to mid-20s tomorrow morning and
