invasion in bethesda on tuesday and a home invasion in wheatton on wednesday. investigators are looking into whether he was behind an attack on temple hill yesterday. at least three people are dead, 40 others are missing after a cruise ship ran aground in italy. the captain has been charged with manslaughter and abandoning ship. the coasta concordia, had about -- passengers said there were mass confusion during the evacuation. >> at the very end, before we jumped off, one of the crewmembers was actually telling us we need to stay on. that's when mark was saying, we don't noeed to stay on, because where we were was sinking fast

and we were right where the water is. >> the state department says 126 u.s. citizens were on board but they have no reports of any injuries. the sheriff's department in bethesda county, maryland are trying to figure out what led to one man's death and another's suicide attempt. derick ward has more. >> reporter: a group of young people gather at the scene of a crash where a friend died as word spread through social media, so did the grove and disbelief. >> i saw on facebook and people were posting stuff on his wall, and they were saying, brandon. and i was like, yeah, i didn't know how to take it. >> reporter: 18-year-old brandon herbert's body was found in frederick county. a resident reported coming upon his body in the roadway just before 2:00 a.m.

there was skid marks, the sign of a crash, but no vehicle was found. investigators learned that herbert has been seen at the home of a friend. inside the home they found fisher critically wounded suffering from what authorities describe as a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. making it all harder to bear. this is a winding, unforgiving stretch of road even to folks who know it and even in daylight conditions, you can imagine what it was like when this crash occurred. >> there were about three different vehicles were driving 50-plus miles an hour. and you can see on these roads, that's tos for these roads. >> he was a really sweet guy and

i can't believe he's gone. >> derick ward, news4. authorities say they suspect a man suspected of being the serial butt slasher, he was arrested in a shopping mall in his native crew. johnny simmtel was -- he would distract young female shoppers and then cut their buttocks with a razor or a box cutter. their outfits were convincing but when they pulled someone over, their plot started falling apart. tonight a warning from police about two men who are pretending to be police officers. >> reporter: it's easy to see why the victim may have thought these two d.c. police impersonators may have been the real deal. police are saying they pulled the victim over in a dark

colored chevy impala with lights on the dashboard. this traffic stop happened right around 3:00 this morning in the 4800 block of texas avenue. police say the victim did pull over his vehicle and comply, and that's when he was robbed of $400 in cash. >> they're wearing dark colored vests with the word police on it. they had no other insignia of the police department. no badge. he told him to comply withary demands and they robbed him of money. >> reporter: police are describing the vehicle as a chevy impala, they believe it's a 2004 or 2005 model. anyone with information is asked to call d.c. police, they say they're not aware of any other cases or anyone else being pulled over. if you find yourself suspicious,

after a 27-degree start. and even with today's january chill, the whole month is still nearly five degrees warmer than average. so the mild air has really been entrenched around here for much of the winter. today and tomorrow some of the rare exceptions. 34 degrees with a northwesterly breeze, 21 in gaithersberg. 31 in rocksberg. dulles, vienna and fairfax city, all have temperatures heading back down below the freezing mark. already in the 20s across the high spots north and west of town. so your saturday evening will be a cold one. mid to upper 20s, even inside the city limits by 11:00 p.m. that means you folks out in the colder suburbs, mid 20s by 10:00 p.m. there are some light snow showers in we southwest virginia, far southwest virginia, all the way down

towards bristol. the very tail end of interstate 31. this is all going to stay to our south, but that little ripple of low pressure will spread a couple of low clouds into our skies. especially those to the south and west of washington. you get a sense that all that energy and moisture is going to go down below us. it stays south of us tonight. it will be cold with some passing clouds around for much of the overnight hours tonight. and a cold start tonight, and tomorrow afternoon. on the colder side of average, highs tomorrow only in the mid 30s, that's about five to six degrees colder than average. then as this area of low pressure works its way offshore, it will be milder. 18 in the cold spots to mid and upper 20s in town. then tomorrow, mostly sunny, still chilly. high temperatures only in the low 30s tomorrow. but not much of a breeze to
